CASE STUDY : SUDIRMAN STREET, YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA
YES, WE DO...
Covid-19 has drastically changed our perspective and relationship regarding public spaces, streets, open spaces, and public buildings. Not to mention, this pandemic has also brought a changes to our social system. The nature of this pandemic changes our interaction, one of those impact is the government has to make a new policy such as social distancing and work from home. This new policy, however, shows us that our public amenities is not resilience enough especially on social aspect.
BUT... LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT OUR PUBLIC SPACE
IS THAT SUFFICIENT?
CITIZEN OF JOGJA IN TOTAL: 431,939 (2019)
Working remotely reduced a significant amount of our daily social interaction. Its effect varied physically to mentally. From this pandemic we learn our public spaces are not resilience and adaptive enough to accommodate citizens activity. In practice, government policy of social distancing is proven not strong enough. Eventually people get bored and began to go outside. To counter this we need a public space that could accommodate people activity but also maintain public health.
Our public facility before pandemic is not very adaptive in acomodating publics needs. In jogja itself, we are lacking of public space that open for citizens for 24 hours and fully accessible. In effect, many public spaces are not operating or being avoided by people.
Our idea is to inject space specifically on road and riverside of Jogja. As we know, strret is related closely to public mobility in daily life, while jogja itself was divided by river. Both are also an open place and has potential for fluid movement.
Covid-19 changes our social interaction, this shift brought a new perspective in public realm. To mantain public health, each individual demands a larger space for activities. In that sense, public space needs to be more adaptive and has a flexible space.
RETHINKING PUBLIC SPACE RESILIENCY??
In reality, our pedestrian and riverside doesn’t have a good quality to support public activities, it often became an isolated space.
In that sense, we propose a design aiming for social resiliency. Our focus is on a place where it is closest to public mobility and life but often does not get enough attention or well designed. After some iteration, we are highlighting public space in the form of street and riverside. We are aiming for a livable, accessible, and flexible space that hopefully will enhance public needs in social aspect.
As street is the common space that all people access in all region, we hope with injecting public space in those areas will enhance public interaction. This design also aims that people and spaces have
