Detailed Project Report for Municipal Solid Waste Management Collection & Transportation for Nagar Palika Parishad Maharajganj
Table 7-8: Summary of the Physical Characterization of MSW of Maharajganj
Source: Primary Survey. Maharajganj during field visit in July 2021 Chemical Assessment: Chemical characteristics considered for municipal waste are moisture, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, C/N ratio etc. All the analysis was done within 24 hours of sample collection. The results of chemical analysis for the waste is given in Table 7-9. Physical Analysis 1. The overall percentage of biodegradables is about 61%; the percentage increases to 70% for
market area and 65 % in commercial area. 2. Paper is at an overall average of 4 % and percentage increases in case of commercial areas (5%)
and is lowest in residential slum areas. 3. The metal content varies from 0.58% to 1.65%, whereas glass content is less than 2 %. 4. Overall 1 % of the total waste is inert.
Chemical Analysis 1. The average density of solid waste is about 0.49, whereas about 0.36 gm/cc in commercial area. This density is at the source of generation. 2. Moisture content of solid waste is usually expressed as the weight of moisture per unit weight of wet material. The average moisture content is 41.83%. The highest moisture content was found in the sample from slum area about 51.2%. 3. The calorific value varies from 862.4 kcal/kg to 1090.7 kcal/kg. The average calorific value is highest in slum areas. 4. C/N ratio is between 9:1 to 31:1. Highest in institutional area (31:1) and lowest in residential non- slum area (9:1).
