•presents on the edges of the river vegetation typical of mangrove •100% of wastewater is untreated; The rainwater drainage system is quite inadequate, which is aggravated by the cumulative effects of the release of solid waste •It is the largest hydrographic basin fully inserted in the Municipality of São Luís and flows simultaneously in the Bay of São Marcos. Besides the Bacanga River, its main tributaries are the Rio das Bicas, the Igarapé do Carpette, the Igarapé Itapicuraíba, Igarapé do Tamancão and Igarapé do Piancó.

• The Bacanga River, its main tributary, begins by two water courses that, when they meet, begin to have the same course, 16.8 km. Because of the low energy it contains, this river is not capable of carrying so much of the load of coarse materials (sands) that it carries, which is why areas of deposition are created, which become natural obstacles for the change of course of the talvegue, and even, branching out. Therefore, shallow secondary channels appear, bordering these deposit zones, already largely covered by mangrove vegetation forming a very diversified ecosystem (IMCA, Programa Verde, 1998).

Geographically it presents itself as a challenge, since the park serves as a balance between industrial pollution and residential areas, since, in the vicinity of the Park, there are the road, port, airport, penitentiary complexes, industrial district, federal university, Eletronorte's energy system and more than 400,000 inhabitants, including the Itaqui-Bacanga-Centro-Zona Rural axis.
