The conductor of NTNU modern campus planning- Dr. Yang Shau-Chou National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), which has long been recognized as one of Taiwan’s elite institutions of higher education. With almost a hundred year history, you can found many traditional buildings arround the campus. During the time, the ex-chancellor was expending and remodeling the school, Dr. Yang was the main conductor of the campus planning. The NTNU main library, the Education building and the Technology building are all under his feat. He considered deeply through any details. For example, the curve cut from the new library building shape can see though from the front so that won’t block the old library arch structural behind. With his persistence, the new buildings successfully merged and get the balance with the traditional architectures.

Prof. Yang, Shau-Chou Address: No.10, Sec.2 Garden 6th Rd., ShinDian District, New Taipei City, Taiwan Phone: +886-936-127-927 Email: sergio317@ntnu.edu.tw Date: 29/Jan/2013 To whom it may concern, Lin, Chia-Ching (Anne) is writing this thesis to accomplish the master degree. I was her professor during the collage years and happened to live in the community which is discussed in her project. Therefore, I was invited to write this cover letter for her. The New Garden City was established in 1968 by the architect, Mrs. Hsu, Ze-Lan. While she was mapping out the community, she was inspired by a British urban planner, Ebenezer Howard, The Garden Cities of To-morrow. The concept of the urban plan is to have an economic system that can be self-sufficiency. With that vision, the builder operated restaurants, markets, transportation and the theme park in order to make profits to maintain the town. During the time, the residence did not need to pay for any managing or maintenance fees. The New Garden City was not only the most modern conception practiced but also the first mountainside residential community built in the entire history of Taiwan! My family and I visited the theme park when it was there around forty years ago, and all of us were so attracted by the breath taking scenery. We moved into the New Garden City in 1982, and enjoy the quiet and peaceful life here a lot. Time flies, we have been living here about thirty years now. The site Anne is working on was a compound unit combined with a restaurant, kindergarten, supermarket and swimming pool. When my children were kids, we spent some quality time there! With the zig-zag chevron roof, arch windows and the curving walls, the building is full of Mrs. Hsu’s design characteristics.

Unfortunately, because those operational profits did not meet the community’s expenditure, the builder declared bankrupt in 1986. They started selling lands and buildings, and this unit was sold to someone who does not live in the community. The architecture with full of design has been abandoned. Other facilities also broke down one by one. The builder was no longer in charge. The residences have to take over and protect the town by themselves. The situation awakens the people in town. The community recently is planning to redevelop the town. The site, the subject of Anne’s thesis, located at the center of the community, has a very strong history background. Since it becomes a private property, how to make it for commercial use and merge with the community at the same time becomes the challenge of the project. Anne was a hard working student in my class and has creative design potential. I’m really looking forward to see how she is going to develop the scheme. I would love to write the cover letter for her and wish her luck for the thesis project. Sincerely, Prof. Yang, Shau-Chou

Autobiography Who I am… An American born, Taiwanese. Anne Chia-Ching Lin, a Taiwanese girl born in America. Happy with having two different backgrounds which gives me a wider perspective, being able to embrace the two worlds, the two cultures. Been educated in Taiwan for 19 years, “As a man sows, so shall he reap” is my attitude to work. I work hard to stretch beyond my limits, so I will not have any regrets whatsoever. There is so much to learn in the world that the journey will never be deemed obsolete until our very last breath.“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. “from Psalms 126:5 become my belief and hope for life.

Me & Interior Design… Interior is the medium for human’s expression on Earth, where it brings out one of the ways of the spirit of life. I am interested in doing handicraft and drawing but never thought of it as my profession. I always feel exhilarated when the things I made gives warmth and delightful surprises to the people I made for and that has in turn become my passion to know more about what “design” really is and that can we “design” people’s feelings in return? For my bachelor, I got involved in an Interior design education program and got chance to work in an exhibition company. I realized that design allow things to become meaningful. It’s like massaging deep thoughts with love and Interior is the first space people can feel when people open their eyes in the morning and the last thing they see when they sleep at night. I believe things made out of sincerity and coming from the heart will be able to evoke an indestructible, eternal and alive spirit – a beginning of permanence.

03

Why I am here in Academy of Art University… Because of Who we have here: International students with different cultures. All designers and artists who are passionate. Experienced instructors who marries the world’s possibilities to the hopes of the future generation (us) Because of what I’m doing here: To fuse my previous interior academy education degree obtained back in Taiwan with the endless possibilities of interior design taught here in Academy of Art. Since knowing more about the purpose of interior design and looking at it with different perspectives while doing design, I am really impressed by what I have learned so far. For example, the rich color scheme, material use and the idea of sustainable design…etc., are all new to me. I feel happy and has become even more motivated then ever, and look forward to how the school will be able to help me explore further and expand my awareness in this amazing design field. Because of where we are: San Francisco is a city filled with international art galleries, diverse design materials and is also the state initiated for the sustainability movement which really gives me great encouragement and confidence for the future ahead, knowing that I am in good hands with such strong back up.

Traditional Culture Play

Having an education background, I would like to work with historical and cultural orientated projects, which gives out message of the eminent bond between people and the environment. Totem drawing has always been a keen interest of mine; I also like to design brand commercials with graphics. Combining my interests with design techniques learnt, I hope to be a solution driven, cultural developing interior designer. For this thesis project, I found out that the building itself is filled with subtle historical meaning and messages. The more research I did, the more passionate I became on fully putting across the intended message through the design project. The idea of garden city methodology supports the sustainability of the close loop cycle and system thinking process. What made the original project fail? What happened to the relationship between people and environment? This project will enable me to investigate and thoroughly explore the linkages and come up with a balanced design project which incorporates nature, culture and technologies. During the academy year, I would like to take skill training classes like 3D Max, and like to take furniture design, textile design, and graphic design as direct study. I will try to get more internship opportunities as I can around the Bay area during the year to gain more experience and explore more which field I really like. Such in museum, display gallery, retail store, mostly will be commercial design. I would also like to go New York by chance and see how design “impacted in the city.

- A Community & Retreat Center.

Project Abstract How and why I chose the project?

Why “Retreat center?

In Taiwan, urban regeneration has been view as an important strategy for city development. The aim of urban regeneration is to utilise urban land with planning strategies, improve the physical, economic and environmental state of the cities and increase public interests. (CPAMI) I think the ideas from The Urban Renewal Act are exactly match the central concept for the interior architecture designer in nowadays- to get the balance between sustainable and thermal comfort. Therefore, I tried to find a project can get involved the plan by chance in the future and be more eligible for my Master studies.

Retreat is defined as a get-away, a refuge, a place to take time out for reflection, to draw back, to move back, to recede.

I used to work in an art exhibition company and get the opportunity to know the project that the community is currently trying to remodel the old buildings. During site studies, I found people in the town have close relationship with each other and are very helpful and active on making the community better. I was plan to contact with people there and do survey for the project to get more information during the design process. Amazingly, I found my professor in the university who have a strong back ground in architecture just live in the community! Great emphasis is being placed on the connection with the environment through the involvement of residents living over there, however much still need to be explored and discovered. 09

Melancholia becomes a common mental disorder nowadays, and it takes up to 3% of the world population which is around 2 billion people. The World Health Organization forecast that the three main diseases in 2020, melancholia will be the second serious problem around the world. For the economic, melancholia also cause a heavy burden to the society. In the United States, according to a rough estimate the loss is around $430 trillion US dollars every year because people get depress and cannot work. There is 8.9% of the population in Taiwan get melancholia and loss 13.5 million US dollar every year. In Taiwan, according to the survey 73.5 % of the people who between 45-59 years-old get depression. Most of the stress comes from taking care of the elders and been unemployed. The project is located on the mountainside, and the community established base on having a quiet, peaceful and healthy life. It gets the perfect conditions to develop a place for a healthy and wellness center- a please can help people release from the society pressure, a place people thirst for.

How to process and how to fulfill the intent of the project? Being an environmentally sustainable project becomes the new approach for the design industries. Bioclimatic design shows the idea by using environmental sources, such as air, sun, wind, vegetation, water, soil, daylight for heating, cooling and lighting of buildings. Doing more studies and analyses about the project will be one of the focus point for my project. What is free and what I can use for my design. “If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is SDUW RI D WUHH µ Ɇ 0LFKDHO &ULFKWRQ Although the community doesn’t have a long history, but have a narrative and jeopardy story. From the original idea of the community to the center thought of the architect herself. Finding out the problems they had and have, what the architect did before and her idea...etc. The project is located at the center of the community and was built by the architect who established the town. The history becomes the main factors for many of my design decision.

OVERALL CONCEPTT Under The Wing: Peaceful, simple, and nd nature, with protection and d st strength --- A Community & Retreat Center. m the complicated society life. In our daily life, most of the pressure comes from mple life, simple thoughts a I Hope giving out the message of having a simple and reach the highest level of mind and protected the inner mind clear clear. Being “healthy” become a very popular and important topic, and it is also the original intention to build up The New Garden City (花園新城/ Huayuan Xincheng) community. For my design concept, Taiwan blue magpie is a distinctive species in Taiwan just like the traditional art culture- traditional chinese painting. Its character also symbol as strong solidarity and try to fight and protected their home like the residences just rise up the awareness these years. Through the project not only help for the function of the town but also giving out the message of trace back to the basic idea of having a happy life and give a whole new definition on reinforce the physical body and peaceful spirit.

Precedent Studies PEPITES A peaceful home for a hustle life Project Type: Residential Community Location: Sub-urban in education and residential zone.

Two blocks away from the subway and have school, shopping mall, and golf course around. With nice environment with convenient transportation. On Xinmin St., Tamsui Dist., New Taipei City 251, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

Program: Fifteen buildings, four sections with eight-story high and two level basements. Large size around 700 sf in a suite and assign 211 households in the community. One square foot for $20,000 US dollars for rent. Having courtyard in the apartment and can have vegetable garden at home. Get approved from SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance) for safety. Project Insight: Like to give people a relax and peaceful

place as their home which have the same concept as the project. Using bright and naturel color and texture for the interior theme can bring the close touch to the nature environment. For the lighting use wall wash more rather than down light to create nature lighting. The project successfully create an interior with a fresh and natural atmosphere.

YOGA STUDIO Great Green Home: Carter Burton Yoga Studio Project Type: Residential Studio Location: Washington DC in Clark County, Virginia Program: Designed by Carter + Burton Architecture, the small

scale structure serves as a yoga studio and guest house. Despite its compact 600 square foot footprint, the studio earned a LEED Gold certification when it was completed in 2007.

Project Insight: The yoga studio’s most sophisticated green system is their integrated geothermal heating system, which provides efficient space heating and cooling and all of the studio’s hot water needs. The system consists of a ground-coupled heat transfer loop (geoexchanger) connected to a liquid-to-liquid heat pump and a liquid-to-air heat pump. Hope to build a green environment for the yoga and spa area, can learn from the system and become the strategy while doing the design.

Project Type: Residential Studio Location: Vancouver Program: A private residence of 285 square metres for a single person. The program includes living spaces, bedroom, study, music room, and a lap pool. Project Insight: Having the pool above in the project is

similar to my project that having a 7,000 sq pool with two-story beneath. The designer smartly uses the light through the water to create lighting movement from the wave. I would like to use the idea for the interior beneath the pool can create a peaceful world under the sea.

21

GLENEAGLES COMMUNITY CENTER by Patkau Architects

Project Type: Community Center Location: West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Program: In 24,000 sq. ft., the intermediate level contains a community “living room,” café, meeting room, administration, and child care facilities. The lower level opens on the opposite side of the building to the covered terraces and courtyard spaces adjacent to the golf course and includes a gymnasium, multipurpose room, arts room, youth room, and outdoor specialty area. The upper level accommodates fitness facilities. Project Insight: Gleneagles Community Center is located on a small, gently sloping site adjacent to a public golf course. Patkau Architects organized the program on three levels to minimize the building footprint. The sectional arrangement of interior spaces activates and energizes the building. The volume of the gymnasium rises through the three levels; walls that separate this volume from adjacent spaces are glazed to facilitate visual connection between the various programs within the building. These simultaneous views of multiple activities animate the interior; the life of the building and the energy of the place are palpable to the community within and without.

Inspiration XIU ZELAN The Pioneer Of Modern Traditional Architect.

Mrs. Hsu Ze-Lan with her husband.

Xiu Zelan(修澤蘭 ɔ ), a Taiwanese Architect, ancestral home is in Yuanling Hunan. During World War II she attended Architecture Department of National Central University in Chongqing(Now Southeast University School of Architecture). In 1949 she entered the Taiwan Rail Bureau. She took charge of the Department of General Logistics and Engineering as an assistant engineer. Her work is full of peculiar curve but integrate with the additional architecture style of the 1950’s. In 1965 she took charge of Yangmingshan's Chung-Shan Building as Designer and consequently achieved a Taiwanese Architecture prize of Taiwan's first female architect.

27

Most of her project looks traditional Chinese style, but she tried to merge with more curve lines and flow shape which jump out of the original box. She inspire me how to keep the traditional value and add fresh elements to continue the language. Now being in San Francisco and away from Taiwan, I start looking back to the Chinese culture which I used be and take it for normal. Through the project, I hope to help and continue the conventional art culture and take what I have lean and inspire from here. Furthered more, understanding who I am, exploring where I am from--Taiwan and the United States.

NEW GARDEN CITY Inspiration from the community itself.

During site visit, I also visit my professor who live there for 30 more years in the community. It is a beautiful town and can see the builders consideration on the path way and every corner. But can also feel the dispirited about decline from such an ideal aspiration of the town. There’s a very big hand-drawing map hanging in the community office which really inspire me for the project. It was drew by an artist who live in the community. The North is pointing down, and there are three kinds of birds: Taiwanese blue magpie, owl, and eagle. Those not only can be seen in the town but also represent the character of the animal: unity, wisdom and power. I hope the project can represent the spirit of the community, the art culture of Taiwan, and the beauty of nature. A hand-drawing map from the community artiest.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE PAINTING Me & The black ink.

I saw my grandmother did traditional Chinese painting since I was a little girl, though I never really have chance to take any painting class during my life. I always like to be watch my grandma paint and be her little fan. While she was painting, she always told me to hold the brush with your heart and just follow the spirit, and God will lead you and create the beautiful line. Black ink always reminds me of my grandmother and inspire me to do totem drawing whenever I feel confuse in my mind. I don’t know what I’m going to draw, going to design, but I believe with full heart and spirits while doing it, though only black ink will have the soul to talk for itself.

Things don’t go as planned all the time. The revenue and expenditures didn’t meet and the town was almost asked to be demolished when the government intends to build a reservoir in 1979, Xiu Zelan also had a career setback during that year. People try to preserve this amazing and beautiful community so the Orchids Stream Culture Association was founded (2004) to rebuild and maintain the place. Orchid Stream

Why I choose this site‌ LOCATION: A place close to the nature with transportation convenient

PEOPLE: Who keeps the traditional music and art culture with community unity and pursues being outstanding characters.

New Taipei City used to be the outskirts of the Taipei City, which is the capital city, just like relationship between New Jersey and New York. During the population growth, the suburbs been pushed outward, but New Taipei city still keeps part out the area just for residential area cause from the sloping hill terrain. The community is located on the hill and away from the city to get the quite environment. With the transportation develop, the Sindian metro station start using in 1998, which brings the immigration to the community.

A community with artist, photographers, writers, and natural eco-enthusiasts. People are looking for a better life quality and get away from the busy city life can more focused on the inner life development. The residences keep the traditional art and music culture and have strong community unity awareness and self-motivation characters.

TIMMING: 1) The tap-water finally enter the town by the Taiwan Water Corporation in 2013. Which have problem with the private road properties for a long time and people use water from the steam for a long while. 2) The global carbon reduction and the environmental consciousness been risen and start remodeling the abounded buildings in town and get support from the local government. ENVIRNMENT: A place keeping the Taiwanese species with breath talking view. On the hill, people can easily see many Taiwanese animals and plants species around the town. It’s a successful community that people live back with the nature environment rather separated with the ground in the urban jungle.

2012 SP 01/30-05/19 IAD 612 Material Use/ Mariotto, Ernest ELLA'S Restaurant Redesign Project

The original restaurant have their own bakery and open for breakfast and lunch. Customer are mostly families. The client want to change the target customer to business people and will open after mid-night. I get the idea from mushrooms always served with the stake, just like the employee always serving the big boss in the company. Here’s a place for employees to have fun and relax after work, like the mushroom changes to a different wild level--- FUNgus.

IAD 610

Spatial Design/ Woo, Archibald

INTRODUCTION

For this spa design project, I want to relate it back to the original concept for the hotel itself ---Graffiti. But as a relaxing space, it should be clean and comfortable. Rather using a lot of colors but the shape and lighting to create a spa that can touch people’s heart when they get into the space. I found the relationship between graffiti and spa had two similar elements: SPRAY and HANDS. Graffiti mostly using spay can and free-hand painting on the wall; Spa has water spray treatment and massage. The word “Massage” from Arabic massa means “to touch, feel or handle.” So I named this project--- Spa-touch.

Touch you heart; calm your soul. INSPIRATION

Cork is warm, rich looking and durable with excellent insulation and noise reduction qualities. It is a highly renewable resource because removing its contents from Mediterranean oak trees does not require the tree to be felled, and once the cork is removed, the tree replenishes its bark. Bamboo is a truly sustainable harvested grass that regenerates at least 8 times faster than hardwood. Not only does bamboo mature rapidly but harvesting does not kill the plant. We use only fully mature Moso bamboo which is selected for superior strength and maximum hardness.

Barnwood furniture gives virtually any property a warm, traditional look. It is designed to be hard and worn looking, and the barn wood finishes is produced from genuine recycled barn wood.

100% eco-wool is a natural and environmentally friendly fiber that requires less water and fewer pesticides to produce than linen or cotton. The fabric actually aids in air pollution reduction by absorbing VOC’s in the atmosphere, including formaldehyde. The fibers themselves have almost no toxic residues and the fabric is compliant with the EU eco-label standard.
