WELCOME TO...

10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

AFF IS AN ANNUAL, TWICE RECORD BREAKING FREE FESTIVAL, PROMOTING A VAST SPECTRUM OF ARTISTIC ACTIVITY AND MUSIC FROM A MULTITUDE OF GENRES. WE PROMOTE CREATIVITY, WELL BEING, COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND OF COURSE, WE ARE HERE TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF OUR MAIN MAN STAN LAUREL IN THIS MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF HIS BIRTH.

WE ALSO RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR TWO FANTASTIC LOCAL CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS - ST MARY’S HOSPICE & ULVERSTON FOOD PROJECT.

Ten years? Really? How did that happen? What a crazy feeling it is, to reflect upon an entire decade of Another Fine Fest.

That we are still here is in some ways a bit of a miracle. With rising costs, funding ever harder to come by and festivals disappearing all over the country, it has become extremely difficult to keep this thing afloat.

But survive we have and celebrate we shall!

From very humble beginnings but with very big ideas back in 2014, our festival has grown beyond our wildest expectations. It makes me so incredibly proud to see how this thing has evolved and to see the love for it grow over the years.

This one's for you beautiful people.

For everyone that believed in the dream and helped us to make it a reality. You are all invited to help us mark this unbelievable milestone and join us on our mission to SPREAD THE LOVE!

We extend our deepest gratitude to all our sponsors and of course our 822 dedicated crowdfunders (approx 5% of our attendees) - whose generous support has been instrumental in bringing our multi-arts festival to life year after year.

These public donations make up the largest source of funding for our fest!

Your belief in our vision has allowed us to flourish and grow beyond our wildest dreams. Without your invaluable contributions, our festival would not exist, and we are truly humbled by your generosity. Thank you for helping us continue to inspire, unite, and celebrate the beauty of creativity in all its forms.

Award winning comedians as seen on shows such as 8 out of 10 Cats, Mock The Week & Live at the Apollo. Giving an exclusive glimpse of their forthcoming Edinburgh shows.10 of the very best acts on the scene.

Tesco does not need your quids. They've ignored requests to support our event despite making significant profits from it. However, they did make £2.6 billion during a cost of living crisis.

Glass gives us all manner of headaches. It is dangerous and we have to clear it all up, costing us a LOT of money and stretching our very tight budget.

Please do not drink from glass on the streets and potentially injure thousands of feets!

No waste will go to landfill. It will be taken to the MBT (mechanical biological treatment) centre close by in Barrow. Here it will be sorted, all the recyclables separated & the rest made into fuels (Solid Recovered Fuel) or road surfacing.

In conjunction with Mycelium Thinking, we aim to become a carbon neutral festival by 2037. Find out more about what we are doing to try and achieve this on page 7.

Expect a dazzling array of festival traders offering all manner of wares and a reet tasty food court, representing multiple cuisines from all over our planet.

A lil’ something for our lil’ uns! Theatre Street Car Park will once again play host to a fair with all manner of attractions. Expect bumper cars, merry-go-rounds, trampolines and mini-twisters.

O and candy floss of course.

Includes programmes, plantable wristbands and various other lovely items - with profits being ploughed back into sustainability schemes. (Outside the Laurel & Hardy Museum)

Don’t forget to visit our wonderful independent venues and stores. We have a cornucopia of unique outlets offering everything you could possibly need.

Buying local is the best way to be environmentally friendly while supporting our community. By purchasing locally produced food & goods, you help stimulate our economy, retain valuable jobs, support families and strengthen our community and culture.

PLEASE DONATE

We’ll be totally honest, it’s been a massive struggle this year. Creating a huge and completely free festival where all artists & staff are paid has always been a challenge. But this year it has become almost impossible with spiralling costs. (The only volunteers we have are our lovely fundraisers who donate a couple of hours to collect for the charities/next year’s event).

. We have seen so many festivals cancelled this summer and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to continue as things are.

If you see one of our friendly volunteers in their official #anotherfinefest gear, please consider making a donation (to be split between us & our charitable organisations. You can also pledge via the QR code on the front page of this guide!

Please check last bus/train times & updates well in advance & expect services to be busy.

We asked Stagecoach & Northern to provide extra services to no avail. Hopefully next year! Stagecoach will however provide double rather than single deckers. Thank you Stagecoach!

ANNA SHARPE

My love for mountainous landscapes has taken me across the world climbing peaks and sketching them.

I recognise both climbing and art to be ways of interacting with wild places; this is the starting point for most of my artistic endeavours.

In a time when the environment is frequently mistreated as a resource, I look to reawaken our physical and spiritual connections to it.

KATE BRUNSKILL

BECKI GILL

Becki Gill is a freelance illustrator based in the Lake District, UK who mainly specializes in portraiture, pattern illustration and food. Her work is heavily inspired by pop culture and musical icons.

She predominantly works in a digital format, hand drawing her illustrations in Procreate; but still likes to give her work a 'mixed media' feel with bold sketchy lines, textured shading and a playful use of colour.

KATHERINE HARRIS

I’ve taken part in AFF window painting since the very first year and I’m now excited to be part of the 10th birthday celebration. It’s such an exciting way to be creative amid the music, performers and the festival atmosphere!

I’m inspired by fantasy books and computer games and hope to bring some more odd characters to life on Amigos window this year. Kate (Wolf Town Art).

Katherine is an illustrator and graphic designer who lives in Barrow-in-Furness. She creates her work using mostly gouache and coloured pencil.

Her illustrations tend to have themes of history, legends and stories. Since studying illustration at Falmouth university, Katherine has gone on to create work for magazines such as Honest History and Scoop.

I'm so excited to take part in AFF24. It's an absolute privilege to work alongside the immense talent that comes together to create this awesome festival.

I've tried to do at least one creative thing each year, be it window scrawlings, live painting, playing in a band, decorating pub gardens, bespoke art for sponsors - even face painting one year! I love it!

BETHAN THORSBY

Bethan’s

work supports local business & grass roots arts organisations.

Her style balances playful & nostalgic illustration with a bright & bold graphic design sensibility. In her celebrations of nature & community, Bethan creates stand-out, alluring visuals for brands, venues & products. Clients include Kendal Mountain Festival.

MANDY ALLEN

HOLLY MCQUISTAN

Artist inspired by the things I lovefrom creating whimsical witchy illustrations to celebrating my favourite bands by painting them.

Artist John Hall is the Ostler at Ulverston's annual 'Oss ceremony, and with Alex Blackmore he manages the town's Scrapstore.

I will be supporting Spellbound Herbals at Another Fine Fest and will be creating artwork for her amazing shop window which will reflect the magic within!"

His work on community, ritual and pop culture includes audio montages for broadcast, video, music, books, records, 'zines, performances and museum partnerships.

MIKE THOMPSON

I am a South Lakes based wildlife artist creating realistic animal portraiture including wildlife, farming breeds and pet commissions, in soft pastels or coloured pencils.

I love capturing the character and expression of the animals I draw.

I have a particular soft spot for red squirrels and also use my artwork to help raise awareness and funds for local red squirrel charities and conservation groups.

I paint more figuratively in oil, although flowers and still life feature more and more. I draw with charcoal, such a joy. I feel that drawing and painting are a form of meditation. Sally will be drawing festival goers to Ulverston on her window, stand still for long enough and you might get captured!

I am a rural mural artist, hailing from Barrow. I started @kissmyarts when realising I had a couple of mural commissions. Since then, I have created work for Barrow AFC and other businesses around the area.

I love painting windows for AFF. It’s always a privilege to be asked back every year, and look forward to mingling on the cobblestones again!

SALLY BROADBENT

Sally creates artwork based around the idea that we are all interconnected via a collective unconscious.

Symbols figure significantly in her work as she explores the meaning that we give to them. Sally conducts practice-based research into how myth creates meaning and what it can bring to our lives as individuals as well as a wider society.

MORE GLITTER DEAR

Highly saturated and textured illustrations with inspiration from vintage kitsch and retro kawaii culture, if it’s bright and cute, I love it.

Excited to paint a window for AFF24, it’s fabulous being part of Ulverston’s creative community, thank you for having me!

CUNNING CRAFTSMAN

Chris has been a professional and prolific painter and draftsman for over 20 years, working primarily as a commercial mural painter all over the country, with a solid background in illustration, creative drawing, conceptual art works and storytelling.

His personal work revolves around a restless collection of ideas drawn from ancient history, nature, still life & the surreal juxtapositions of humans interacting with the world.

MR ED FUNK

Mr.Ed Funk. Describes his work as "Low brow art for high end problems".

With the aim to always to lift the spirits of the observer. Keeping the fun in funk and the art in fart by using a variety of styles, a cacophany of colours and a healthy dash of mischief in the mix!

His work can be found adorning the boards of some of the world's top Wakessurfers, including European champion Jennifer Edwards.

OTHERMAN

I've been writing graffiti for 30 years on and off. Always tried to honour traditional styles and typography studies, while bringing my own thoughts and techniques.

More recently proud to be involved in bringing larger work to the public space and contributing to a wider understanding of graff artists and their value to our culture.

Personally I’ll be found painting, sketching, making, sculpting and modelling on a much smaller scale these days but always looking back to the old school writers traditions to guide my work.

REASM

A pivotal figure on the Preston street art scene, Shawn Sharpe is now a Fine Fest regular and rightly so as his work is next level. Just see for yourself!

One half of the duo responsible for the Stan and Ollie mural which used to adorn the Roxy as well as the awesome Wolftown piece which can be seen on the ramp at Lightburn Park Skate ramp!

SECA ONE

Seca One has painted murals spanning the Globe including commissions all over the UK and as far away as L.A, Mexico and Morocco.

His work has been recognised by household brands such as Rubik's Cube, Amazon and KopparbergIncluding commission based work for Bankhall Brewery, Kodak and the most notable being two commissioned works for Netflix.

CURWEN

Dj Justice, resident at BUMS, has been bringing the party for decades.

Opening the party with a dub set the vibes are going to be perfect in the courtyard from the start.

Working alongside Gripper for years Justice has hosted numerous parties and plays all styles of dance music and is often found behind the decks at BUMS on their world famous garage open all dayers.

Get down to Amigos early to set your mood for this wonderful celebration of music and art.

Another regular on the decks at B.U.M.S Naomi brings music from her heart with roots in Africa and Latin America.

Her diverse music collection is driven by her interest in progressive and inventive productions that are born of grassroots cultures and express something about their musical lineage.

Music that tells a story, re-invents the borders and ignites the dance floor.

Vinyl collector and music man about town Curwen will bring his solid selection of 45’s to get the courtyard bouncing.

A regular on the decks at BUMS and various parties his record collection has been exploding recently through his none stop buying of collections.

He recently took over the main room at BUMS as part of our record fair and showed off part of his massive selection of vinyl.

DJ'in since the late 80s, Gripper is an established & respected resident at the Kashmir Lounge Amsterdam & our Barrow Underground Music Society. His live streamed radio shows & mixes continue to gain attention from a global audience of music lovers, producers & fellow DJ's.

He’s released two albums under the name Tambores En Beniras with both albums receiving massive respect & props from across the industry. 2021 - 2024 has seen him DJ at the legendary Pikes & Word of Mouth WOM in Ibiza .

Today he is bringing the eclectic party vibes & sunshine to Amigos.

Ex-pat based in the midst of Manchester’s grass roots alternative music scene, Jedredy selects the obscure releases from his vinyl piles for his Bumming DJ Jedredy shows.

Some of you will know certain tracks, some of you will want to know. No Spotify was harmed in the production of the show, all the stuff proudly owned.

He can often be found DJ’ing in bars and cafes around Manchester where he shows off his endless knowledge of 80’s vinyl and rare B-sides that you have never heard but wish you had.

SQUID Youngest member of Sub:Stance. Played her first set at a free party aged 5, and her first festival aged 6, now aged 12 and gaining a regular following Squid continues to push the Drum and Bass boundaries with heavy sets every time.

She has recently entered into the world of promoting and curated the recent ‘Next Gen’ the future of music all day event at BUMS. The event showcased young up and coming talent including DJ’s and Bands from across the North West. She is a bit demanding though, with a rider of a pint of Pepsi and a bag of Haribos.

Phat Phil Cooper has long been celebrated for his diverse approach to music.

While naturally at home championing the seductive, sun-kissed sounds released on the NuNorthern Soul label he founded in 2012 – either in humid outdoor venues around the Globe or via his popular weekly radio shows and regular sessions on Mixcloud – Cooper’s roots can be traced back to the dancefloors of legendary Liverpool club Cream, where during the 1990s and early 2000s he was a key resident DJ. Three decades on, Phil’s club-moving skills remain as sharp as ever.

For over two decades Etch has been attending and putting on partiesfrom clubs and warehouses, lakeside to hilltops.

He'll be taking you on a multi genre bass heavy journey through the underground sounds and always stretches the bass bins to their limits at every party he plays.

REUBEN TIGHE

Joe Mansergh brings a varied mix of popular music from throughout the ages in each of his energetic performances. With a love of all genres, particularly classic 60s pop, he’s well versed in the art of getting an audience going and creating an electric atmosphere.

He’ll be covering well-known songs from the 1950s to present day, including rock n’ roll, folk, blues, 80’s pop, 90’s indie, and more.

Perhaps even the odd original if you can catch him on a good day.

Formally known as Braxton Hicks, now fronted Ulverston's favourite landlady, Joanne Clayton-Brown, The Memes bring new life and energy into rare and sometimes obscure tunes.

A great mix of blues and Americana with a dash of good old pub rock and quirkiness. The Memes are back after a 5 year break and enjoying every minute!

If their recent warm up gig was anything to go by, the AFF crowd are in for a real treat.
