HELLO!... ANOTHER FINE FEST // JUNE 16 - 18 THE WORLD RECORD BREAKING FESTIVAL IS BACK This June, Ulverston will once again erupt in a multicolured feast of live music, DJs, circus, street theatre, live street art, window painting, yarnbombing, interactive workshops, comedy, magic and a cornucopia of various other weird and wonderful activity. Yes, that’s right, the world record breaking Another Fine Fest is back to rock the cobbles with the fourth instalment of it’s free multi-arts, family friendly festival! After just 3 years, AFF has established itself as one of the firm favourites in Ulverston’s festival calendar. It is also one of the most well attended with estimates of up to 10,000 revellers flocking to Ulverston for the 2016 instalment, 1180 of whom came together to secure a Guinness World record for the biggest ever shaving foam pie fight! EXTENDING THE GOOD TIMES We’ve had many requests to add additional days & feel that now is the right time to do this. We will not overstretch ourselves as we wish to ensure that all days are kept to a high standard. Therefore the plan is to develop slowly but surely each year. In 2017 we will begin with just one show on Friday 16th, quality stand up comedy with Canadian surrealist legend Tony Law at the Museum! (More on that below) Then, extending the madness that Saturday traditionally brings, we shall keep The Melodrome Stage rocking on the Sunday 18th, featuring lots of live music alongside the usual, unusual variety of vibrant entertainment for all ages as well as some special comedy shows at the Museum... EDINBURGH FRINGE PREVIEWS Some of the UK’s finest comedy talent will give an exclusive and free glimpse of their forthcoming Edinburgh Fringe shows live and direct at the Laurel & Hardy Museum. Two whole days worth of comedy, equalling 9 full one hour performances by a multitude of award winning acts. “We are extremely proud to be offering these shows in association with Planet Mirth here at the Museum. We are sure that Stan would be proud of so much comedy happening in his home town” - Mark Greenhow - Co-organiser

TONY LAW
‘Flies by in joyful abandon’ THE UPCOMING ‘Inspired nonsense’ THE SCOTSMAN
Internationally-renowned comic Tony Law kicks off this year’s proceedings with a Friday night show and our only ticketed show of the weekend - all other events, shows, workshops and displays are entirely free! Multi-award-winning Law presents a sneak peak of his brand new show, featuring the inimitable surreal comedy-art that has made him one of the most celebrated live performers this side of the Atlantic. His penchant for talking nonsense often leads him on surreal adventures, and a lot of Law’s material features tales of his time-travelling exploits in the company of his sausage dog, which gave the title to his Dog Of Time show at the Edinburgh Festival. He performed on Russell Howard’s Good News as part of one of the extended episodes, and as a panellist on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, before truly gaining recognition in the UK.

WINDOW ART
PRIMAL SCIENCE
GLASS AS CANVAS You have never seen windows like this before, glass lets the light in but now the panes will make your heart soar. We have gathered a team of lovely local arty folk who will paint original murals and spectacular scenes upon the glass of our pubs, shops and cafes throughout town.
YARN BOMBING
Primal Science are a local based aerosol art collective. It’s founding members grew up in the late 80’s when the Furness peninsula was a hotbed of British graffiti writing, believe it or not! 20 something years later & their passion for the art-form is still going strong. In recent years they have been working hard to evolve both personally & artistically while retaining strong connections to the gritty origins of graffiti. AFF brings a unique opportunity to create site specific works in Ulverston & to increase understanding of this much maligned art-form.
SUMIT SARKAR
SECA ONE
Sumit’s work ranges from the fantastical characters of his KrikSix world, to his modern interpretation of the Hindu gods, Ananta, through to his sculptural graffiti work, Kerst.
Seca pulled this amazing piece out of the bag for his debut appearance at AFF last year and we just had to invite him back to do more.
Sumit also works as an AV director, animator, illustrator and workshop leader, and is involved in various live art events around the UK, from aerosol art and drawing battles to live digital painting and sculpture.
“I turn photos into modern images and unique art using spraycans and a touch of MYSTYLE!...
REASM
A pivotal figure on the Preston street art scene, Shawn Sharpe is now a Fine Fest regular and rightly so as his work is fantastic. Just see for yourself!
It’s all trial and error... or trial and discovery!”
BUSKER’S ALLEY - OPEN MIC - NEW MARKET STREET Imagine an open mic night but in the day and on the street and that is what we have right here. We invite you to bring down your instrument, plug in and play. This year we welcome back local legend Chris Garratt who will provide the PA for you to hook up to. “I’ve played in bands for about 38 years, and for the last 26, have always had a band on the go, right now I sing, play guitar and write songs for Sad-Eyed Puffins and I also play bass in Bag of Spanners. Other bands I have played and wrote songs for include Son of Kong & Big Guns of Iraq. I host (along with Ash Flower) an Open Mic at the Piel Castle every Wednesday. I have been busking & playing in bars while travelling in Western Europe, and also in South-East Asia.”
A crack squad of Ninja Knitters will get it on with the knit one, pearl one and create a little something special like this....
Complete with sound system, lighting, dancefloor, DJ, and even a bouncer who is probably bigger than the club! Come and rave your socks off within the most intimate club space on the planet!
For some, busking is their sole source of income, so respect the talent, enjoy the art and give generously to those who give pleasure!

Gacko is the Royal Troubadour of Piel Island. Proudly promenading with Dolly, his peripatetic perambulator of performance.
Inspired by great artists such as Amy Macdonald, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks and Imelda May.
Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls. Creatures of the day. Come and learn the most astonishing circus tricks.
Tirikilatops is a collaborative effort between UK and South Korean artists/musicians.
Ever ready to unload his curious cargo of songs, stories and hilarious and engaging routines. This wandering vagabond showman never fails to bring smiles to faces of all ages with his wonderful wordplay, fantastical stories and mesmerising, improvised musical interludes!
BLAST FURNESS A 20 strong and 20 year old street band of the ancient town of Ulverston in South Cumbria, demonstrating freedom with joyous musical reverberations.
Jessica and Tony began their collaboration in October 2016, gelling instantly and blossoming rapidly. We just had to book this excellent duo after impressing us at one of the Piel Castle’s fantastic open mic nights.
Belief is all that it takes. Dance with majesty of play, juggle, hula hoop, diablo, spin plates, poi and more. Then later take all the family and your new skills to the grand workshop and street party during MAXIROOTS at the Melodrome Stage Finale.
Together they mash up the place with a combination of kimchi beats, pop sensibilities, offbeat lyrics, dayglo colours, hacked keyboards, rice wine, halloween attitudes and super earworm melodies. Their gigs are surreal fun experiences not to be missed!

The filthy, low-down, high-speed, toe-tapping, ear-thumping, hip-wiggling, carnivalesque rhythms! With samba drums, a punk/pirate attitude and some serious shapes to pull. They are the party starters, the fiends of the fantastic, all with a penchant for dressing to impress and a flair for drama!
Sharing a love and passion for all things ska/ reggae the close knit group of friends set out to create a band that’s sole purpose is fun. “An Excellent Band” - Pauline Black, The Selecter.
A glorious cacophony of rhythmic sound and percussive energy! Boom Dang is an amazing sideways drumming band from Dalton. Their equally amazing leader Therese has rallied together several North West based drum crews to create a gargantuan 100 strong force to be reckoned with!
An international sideshow sensation, Australian Gordo Gamsby is the world’s strangest strongman and has 11 world records to his name. He will astound and amaze with death defying stunts.

PROFESSOR PUMPERNICKEL
BE. VOCAL
MR. FOPPLETWIG & MR. DOUGLAS’ GRAND EXHIBITION OF CONTRAPTIONS & CURIOSITIES
Explosive fun for everyone! Roll up roll up! Witness the greatest show on earth! Starring exotic chemical compounds, unfathomable physics phenomena and some really rubbish jokes. Born in Cumbria with a ridiculous German accent, Professor Pumpernickel travels the country with his laboratory of lunacy. His mission; to enthuse all ages and abilities about science in hope of seeding some of our future inventors, explorers, life savers and superheroes.
Alongside Becki Fishwick we gave 30 local kids between the ages of 4-15 a succession of free singing workshops and the chance to perform at a festival for the very first time! Now you are invited to come and listen to the musical fruits of their labour. These brave young talented humans have been learning various vocal techniques and exploring a spectrum of music styles to aid them in their learning of a set of songs which they will perform for you today!
Victorian street peddlers Foppletwig & Douglas attempt to convince you that their cobbled inventions are far ahead of their own technological era - the age of steam. A triumphant farce of half-baked futuristic contrivance for your delectation and wonderment.
Described as a one woman Laurel and Hardy, Molly Orange’s show is full of classic vaudeville charm, circus and comedy. Featuring dance, acrobatics, musical saw and a whole lot of silliness.
MOBIUS LOOP
THE GREAT GORDO GAMSBY & MOLLY ORANGE
“HITCHED”
LYONS & LE ZEL
MATRIX CABARET
Mobius Loop create gloriously eccentric gypsy folk stories, fusing world music and conscious rap with eruptions of free-form dance charged with an intimately powerful and intense energetic live performance. Their objective is to create a harmonic resonance that captivates the infinite inspired by the now. “Our music celebrates the holistic world we can see around us and the potential it has to heighten our knowledge provoking a more loving, pantheistic view on the world for human beings.”
After a real-life runaway marriage in a small country town in Australia, Gordo Gamsby and Molly Orange are here to tell you their story of romance through amazing circus and comedy. Be warned- it’s not what you might expect! A 30 minute street theatre spectacular featuring whips, sideshow stunts, escapology and hopefully no divorce proceedings.
Lyons and La Zel is a duo consisting of soulful vocalist, Léa La Zel (The Fire Beneath The Sea/Rumjig) and beatboxer/guitarist/rapper/flautist, James Lyons (The Fire Beneath The Sea). Their music blends together elements of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop.
Matrix Circus and friends bring to you the ultimate circus cabaret. This talented northern collective of 7 artists love to juggle, hoop dance, clown and play. Now for the first time, they also bring aerial hoop and trapeze to the streets of Ulverston. With a mix of contemporary, traditional, strange and wonderful acts, you are certainly in for a treat.’
MAXIROOTS
MATRIX CIRCUS WORKSHOP
Born in Buenos Aires, based in Scotland - MAXIROOTS musician, producer and dj continues to shape his take on world music - blending UK electronic sounds with the eclectic groove and rhythm of Latin music to create something unique. His new live show “IN CUMBIA” blends the best of both worlds - comprising live brass, mc vocalist and percussion along with the big MAXIROOTS dub sound. Maxiroots has shared stages with legends such as Toots and the Maytals, Lee Scratch Perry, The Wailers and Quantic just to name a few. The band includes some of the finest UK players such as Tom Spirals on the mic, Nema Kuta on percussion, Tim Quick on trumpet & Duncan Horne on sax.
Matrix Circus and friends are delighted to share their tricks with you, so you too can become part of the circus. Learn to hoop, juggle, poi, plate spin or diablo. Then together amongst stilt-walkers we will dance to live musicians and the big dub sounds of MAXIROOTS. Creating a community, carnival-like street party and festival crescendo we will never forget.
We have seen this beautiful duo so many times at various festivals across the land and fallen in love with them time and again! We guarantee that you will too!

PESKY
PAPER CRANES
DON’T TELL SUZY
“Right now I feel like exploding!” Pesky! sang at the start of their track ‘Keep Me’,, over a lovely blizzard of shoegazing guitars, twinkling keys and sweet vocals. And explode it did, all over The Guardian, NME and thirty something blogs while rocking the worlds of Radiohead’s Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Steve Lamacq and Lauren Laverne. “Pesky rip harder than they should for their members age - which amazingly sits between eleven and twelve years old.” - Vice.com
Bespoke acoustic duo Paper Cranes features lead vocalist Jon Dawes on guitar & percussion, with the use of the stomping bass drum and a horizontal-style of tapping on the guitar a recognisable feature of their shows. Gentle and heartfelt, but never treading into twee - the band bassist and vocalist Beckah Lloyd adds an angelic quality with soft but perfectly formed vocals. These guys went down a treat at Kendal Calling and when they supported Ocean Colour Scene.
Rootsy feisty folk from four unwieldy women based in Furness and South Lakes. Expect 3 part harmonies, guitar, uke, fiddle, plentiful percussion... and songs of the ocean, good friends and new beginnings. Don’t Tell Suzy bring a joyful spirit and a bit of DIY punk attitude to their music, favouring good feeling over technicality. Their live set is a natural balance of the soulful and silly.
NATHAN LOOPZ
DJM
FIRE BENEATH THE SEA (DJ & MC SET)
JON BYRNE
JOEL DICKINSON MAGICIAN
A Dub, Dance, Reggae styled beatboxer. Nathan Loopz has an art of producing full tracks live with nothing but his mouth and a loop station. Having played at various festivals across the UK this young artist really hits the nail on the head with his drum and bass skits, dub felt style, haunting vocals and rap imagery. Without a doubt a star in the making.
DJM’s true talent is to do what most DJs claim to do, but simply can’t: to use the decks as an instrument, to re-frame & re-imagine tunes in a way that is so creative, so unexpected and requires so much skill from the DJ... that the listener struggles to keep up. These skills have seen him headline crowds of over 5000 people at festivals and club nights around the world. A master of many genres, a pioneer, a visionary. Ladies and gentlemen: DJM.
High energy, fast paced and forward-thinking rhymes over fat, funky beats, with a healthy dollop of fun, hi-jinx and humour thrown in for good measure. Stripping things back to a real, raw hip hop aesthetic of 2 turntables and 2 microphones, you’ll be sure to be wowed by the microphone wizardry and turntable tapestries these 3 flaming brothers weave together with a lighthearted, self-deprecating thread throughout. Having spent several years on the festival circuit, these friends of the Melodrome are no strangers to rocking crowds up and down the country.
“Byrne tackles tough reality with splenetic attack, black humour and colourful dramatic songs... This is rock from the rough end of the streets, delivered with guts and passion.” - NME.
Joel is a highly experienced showman with a collection of amazing routines, the ability to captivate an audience and deliver amazing shows every single time.
Bringing the festival to a close, our musical hero, the legend that is Jon Byrne.
Joel’s shows are creative, funny, magical and packed with spell-binding entertainment.
“it ain’t never gonna end unless we can see past the sky to the heaven deep within, when love is going every which way but in”
Awards: 2011 & 2012 North West Magic Champion. Honorary Fool of Muncaster.
ANOTHER FINE FESTIVAL HUB
GACKO “Gary Bridgens has been a favourite with the performers and spectators at Mintfest for some time now due to his amazing versatility and irrepressible good humour. He has the gift of enchanting audiences young and old with a mixture of wordplay, slapstick, improvised musical interludes and tales embroidered with the flawless creativity of an infinitely improbable imagination” - Lakes Alive
PEBBLE PAINTING WORKSHOP
Jenny from Matrix Circus is back with us again but this time with a bunch of pebbles and lots of paints with which to create some funky designs at this fun workshop for all.
HUB
The Melodrome stage area is a buzzing and vibrant hub of our festival and this year it is here for 2 days!. As well as all manner of entertainment, (live music, DJs, street theatre, close up magic, henna tattoos, facepainting, circus & storytelling), we will also have street artists painting live, some unique and colourful traders, and a seated area with tasty food and a bar for chilling. Nice!

Having sold out the past two years at the Fringe and now returning from a successful run at the Adelaide Fringe fest, Juliette Burton brings her brand new show to AFF.
The debut show from English Comedian of the Year 2016, who “finds laughs in unusual places” - Chortle
Sold out at both Nottingham and Leicester comedy festivals!
“After another crazy family Christmas, Tony had to adopt his 11 year old nephew, without knowing much himself about real life.” Tony Burgess gives us an exclusive glimpse of his debut solo stand up show at the Edinburgh Fringe.
He’s an arrogant, self indulgent, narcissist who will make absolutely anything about himself AKA; a comedian. But just how far can he take that? His girlfriend’s car crash? The death of a stranger? In this hour of no holds barred, brutally honest, opinionated stand-up he’ll look to find out exactly that. Former Liverpool Comedian of the Year, Adam has established himself as one of the most exciting young acts in the country, with a combination of observations, stories and a ferociously quick wit. His undeniable likeability has led to constantly growing fan base and two sell out solo shows at The Liverpool Comedy Festival (2013 & 2014).
Juliette is a multi-award winning comedian, actress, writer, performer, presenter and ex-BCC broadcast journalist. In her new docu-comedy, Juliette investigates the power of kindness. While most of us find it hard enough being kind to ourselves – let alone others – is being nice outdated? Or can we connect and change lives for the better? Juliette appeals to a wide audience, not just typical comedy goers, but also the theatre and the arts crowds. Her openness about mental health is more relevant now than ever before and it’s a breath of fresh air to hear he discuss it with no embarrassment.
Award-winning comedian Josh Pugh has taken his debut show to the Perth and Adelaide Fringes ahead of a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe. Catch him before he’s huge. “Offbeat ideas, strong imagery and dry observational asides, he finds laughs in unusual places. A promising voice” Steve Bennett - Chortle “A keen comic mind.” Bruce Dessau - London Evening Standard Josh is the current English Comedian of the Year and part of the prize means he’ll have taken to the show to the Perth and Adelaide Fringes before going on to Edinburgh.
“Natural at entertaining crowds with his comic brilliance” – The Liverpool Echo
‘Huge talent’ ***** - Mirror ‘Powerful’ **** - Sunday Express ‘Impressive’ **** - Daily Record
The show will be fully formed and has already played Birmingham and Nottingham Comedy Festivals in 2016 ahead of Australia this year.

Tony was the winner of the prestigious City Life Comedian of the Year, came runner up in So You Think You’re Funny and was nominated for best stand up and writer at the North West comedy awards. The world-famous Laurel & Hardy Museum in Ulverston is certainly well worth a visit. Stan Laurel was born in the historic market town in 1890 and in 1993, life-long fan Bill Cubin, the former mayor of Ulverston, opened his own tribute to the comedy duo. Described as a “hobby that got out of hand” the collection soon expanded. It quickly became a “must see” attraction for all visitors to Ulverston. Now in new larger premises within the Roxy cinema complex, there is far more space to enjoy the marvellous Laurel and Hardy memorabelia

I SEE YOU
The Brain is in the Heart
Fresh off supporting Rob Brydon on tour, Tom Toal heads to the museum with a brand new show.
A show about how people are people no matter what they’re doing. Cops, monks, refugees, racists etc, they’re just people and that’s all you can expect them to be. The show was warmly received at Leicester, Glasgow and Bath Comedy Festivals and we are delighted to welcome Chris back to Ulverston after his killer performance at Planet Mirth.
I See You started life on Facebook as a series of satirical horror stories about celebrities and public figures.
70% improvisation. 30% stories about illicit drug use in a household of Christian Scientists. ALL HEART.
Now, with over 45,000 fans, the beast has taken on a life of its own; watch it rise from the bowels of the web in this gruesome comedy spectacular from the twisted mind of multi award-winning comedian Sam Gore.
With more characters then a Pynchon novel pouring out of the head of Russell Hicks, this show promises to be one hell of a trip.
A show about following your dreams and the cost of them, and one terrifying phone call on February 3rd 2017. “Tom is very funny.” - Fringe Review “The Tom Toal comedy glow warms us all.” - Kate Copstick, The Scotsman Amused Moose Best Show Finalist Finalist in English Comedian of the Year and Loaded Laftas. As seen on Channel Four and heard on BBC Radio 2
Sceptical, ludicrous and hilarious, Betts’ comedy is a perfect balance of incisive social satire and complete silliness. Likely topics include: Left-hand bias, Jagermeister and Incan pottery. “Properly hilarious” - London is Funny “Chris Betts is tremendous” - Such Small Portions

With reverb-drenched guitars, spiky basslines, driving drums and infectious vocal melodies, Paloma Café write original songs more addictive than a Blackpool slot machine.
Renowned for their frantic and furious performances it’s hard to believe this power is being made by just a drummer & guitarist.
The Twang boys have been hosting live music nights for over 2 years. The roster of bands they have managed to coax to the area includes Hers, Horsebeach, The Blinders and many other acts that have garnered both critical and commercial acclaim. They also host their indie show TWANG RADIO on Thursdays on Cando FM 7-9pm. When the dust has settled and the bands lay down their guitars the lads like to take over and play indie sets until the early hours. This time round they are going to unleash something a bit special. Kicking off the day you can expect a DJ set consisting of some gentle summer indie sounds to soundtrack the afternoon and ease you into those first pre match ciders.
If Johnny Marr joined The Cure via Buffalo Tom and The Pixies we mite end up with something along the lines of The Degenerate Art Show. Guitar driven indie courtesy of Ulverston locals.
Throughout the day Twang will present a collection of the finest acoustic and full band talent that they could lay thier hands on as detailed below.
With a bunch of brand new material being very recently recorded they are a local talent that needs to be seen!
An energetic performance is what the duo are becoming famed for, so don’t miss out on a chance to catch them live at Twang.
To conclude, once the last live note has been played, it’s time for massive indie rave from 10pm until finish. The fabled Twang Dj set is finally unleashed. The gloves come off. The 1210’s come out. Indie tunes that have been remixed by Hot Chip, Errol Alkan and Soulwax will be blended into a banging set of all the favourite floor filling indie tunes that have had their edges sharpened. Andy and Mal going back to back until the police pull the plug. Expect some surprises and maybe some neat projections? Who knows. Either way. It’s going off.
