Life goes better with needlework!

Birds, critters, kids and flowers all come out to play when spring calls softly, ‘winter is dead’. Flowers are a refreshing sight for our sleepy eyes come the spring. Is it cliché to love flowers so much? Flowers have been the beloved subjects of poems, paintings, photographs, fashion and so much needlework. Their interpretation has been stylized throughout the ages, leaving artists speechless at their beauty, letting the flowers express themselves. For those with a passion for the needle arts, flowers are always in the picture more often than not. Threads come in so many shades that it's possible that an embroidered flower becomes so realistic. There are so many flower prints on fabrics to die for, you know what I'm talking about, whether it's quilting fabric or that dress with the awesome flower print just so...

In this issue, you’ll find several interpretations of spring flowers to herald in the season, using fun tools to make the task easier and many skills to help you make the flowers ‘bloom’. Skills include: learning how to add shading to petals and leaves of a rose using DMC threads, making 3D daffodils and periwinkles with yarn, making fabric flowers using flower makers, joyful blooms expressed in quilt blocks and rows and rows of blooms sewn with fine machine embroidery. We encourage you to use the method you prefer and feel the most comfortable using. The following HST method is the one that we believe is tried and tested, and seems to be the favourite method of quilters, when not using a tool or ruler.

Little Red Riding Hood key holder I designed this key holder for the love of Little Red Riding Hood. This key holder is fully lined with a thin batting and lining. The cushioned holder prevents keys from scratching other items in your purse. A split key ring placed inside the key holder secures the keys and can easily be pulled down to use. The doll’s face is placed under the opening of the hood and her eyes and mouth are hand stitched with care. Add lace trims, cotton tapes, fur pompoms and tiny buttons to embellish the lovely dress Little Red Riding Hood is wearing. There are many options to play with for this holder. You can hang it on the side of your purse as an ornament. You can also wear it as a unique necklace with a long wax cord or metal necklace at the front of your body for convenient access to your key.

Woven and stitched fabrics add a modern touch to this retro styled purse. Play with the various strip widths or weave only a portion of the fabrics to create your own ‘Purse’-onal bag. This project is also a great way to use up left over fabric strips.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “use the right tool for the job.” What are the right tools for knitters? The shortest answer to that question is, “The ones that work best for the knitter.” Not all knitting tools are created equal. When I first began my knitting career, I had two options for needles: Aero or Milward. Oh, if I searched, I could find some Boye, but they were American made, and at the time, most local yarn shops carried either Aero or Milward, both of which were made in England. Boye made a set called Needlemaster. I saw those sets in American craft magazines and dreamed of the day I could spend $60 on a full set of needles!

Straight Needles I tried the Milward, but I didn’t like the shape of the tips – they were similar to the shape of a bullet – rounded down from the shaft to the point – whereas the Aero needles had a nice, straight taper, which made it easier for me to do knit two togethers. I quickly decided that Aeros were for me, and I purchased a full set. This experience with straight needles showed me that there is an element of personal preference involved in choosing knitting needles. As time went on, other manufacturers expanded into the Canadian market. In the early 1980s, I discovered Inox, a European manufacturer which eventually purchased the Aero brand. Inox had a needle called “Tric”. These needles had a full-size shaft for about 4 inches near the tips, but the remainder of the shaft was tapered to a thinner diameter. This was ostensibly to allow a knitter to crowd more stitches on the needle, but it also had the advantages of making the needles lighter in the hands and lighter to ship.

Soon, Clover (from Japan) introduced bamboo needles, and then Bryspun introduced a plastic needle that was flexible and had a concave shape to their tips. Brittany created a beautiful walnut needle with ornately-curved finials, and they later introduced a birch needle with a simpler style stopper. When I asked my friend’s 12-year old daughter whether the identically styled yet different coloured flipflops she was wearing were sold like that or had she actually bought two pairs in different colours, she just gave me « a look » wondering, I’m sure, if I were for real. I guess it meant she had bought two pairs, or maybe not. Regardless, from then on, I decided that with each pair of sock that I would knit, I would add a third one, of a different colour, just in case… And that’s how you get 4 equals 6. In this toe-up spring sock, you have the base pair, in coral, and one additional sock in periwinkle and one in butter yellow. So with 4 socks, you can make three combinations and 3 times 2 socks equals 6!

This sock is knit in a cotton alpaca wool mix to honour the special place of spring in our calendars: it still carries some of the freshness of winter (wool) and is preparing for summer (cotton). An applique flower and the leaf motif are both whimsical and feminine …it’s as if you were walking through a ground cover of periwinkle.

HOOKING AN IRIS T RIVET

Gardens, springtime and the colour blue are all some of my favourite things. Irises are my favourite flower. I like the contrast between the architectural leaves and those flouncy, frilly flowers. It has leaves like swords and flowers like prom dresses. The finished size of the trivet is approximately 6” x 6” and hooked in a #4 cut. This pattern could be blown up bigger to a 12” x 12” (#6 cut) or even an 18” x 18” (#8 cut) and hung on the wall

This project took 3 days, one day to trace the design onto the backing, one day of hooking and one day of finishing. For those who worry about having a lot of unfinished projects stacking up, this project is refreshingly quick to make. If you want to dye your own wool then add on one more day.
