E

ditor's letter

Life goes better with needlework!

It’s been 10 years. How do I express everything that has transpired these past 10 years? What have been the challenges, my moments of certainty, and joy? How do I put into words a journey whose destination has yet to be reached? Does there have to be a destination at all? Perhaps the destination is finding out that the journey is all there is and within it, the destination. The hardest thing in publishing, other than those vicious deadlines, is to trust myself; trust in the creative endeavour. My moment of certainty is hearing from readers at shows, on the phone, by email and even snail mail (I love your cards!) As for experiencing joy, this is felt two fold. First, it has been a privilege to showcase sponsor products throughout the years, and in the case of SVP Canada (Husqvarna Viking and PFAFF sewing machines), their support has been greatly felt since the very beginning. Signing on new sponsors and craft shops is always a great joy and an affirmation that what we do at ANPTmag is impactful. Second, there is great joy in working with designers who create for ANPTmag; showcasing their work, coordinating projects and inspiring

them. They breathe life into our pages! Furthermore, there has been over the last 10 years a huge change in the publishing universe and how we view content that has inspired QUILTsocial.com and KNITmuch.com. Both blogs are the dawn of ANPTmag’s new direction in content marketing for the needle arts. I hope that in these 10 years I have been able to entertain you; inspired you to refine your needlework skills with new techniques and to engage in a new craft. I look forward to inspiring you further in the issues to come to trust your own creativity and make every project your own. Appropriately during the harvest season, let us be thankful for this issue which is chock-full of inspiring projects, projects you’ll want to make in anticipation of the fall and winter seasons, getting ready to beat the cold. If nothing else, I’m thankful for my husband and family, friends, health, shelter and our daily bread. And while I’m at it, I’m most certainly thankful I get to play with knitting needles and colourful yummy yarn, and making beautiful quilts to keep my loved ones warm. What would my world be like without the needle arts? I shudder to even think about it. Cheerfully,

Thank you

If you want a lace shawl that isn’t too Victorian or flowery, this may be the design for you. It has an allover geometric design with minimal borders. The inspiration for this shawl came from a display of various crystal minerals in a museum. Crystals have flat shiny plane surfaces, represented here by the stocking stitch triangles. They also have a very orderly molecular structure, represented by the lace triangles. I recommend knitting the shawl in a tonal jewel colour. I chose emerald, but amethyst or ruby or sapphire would also be beautiful.

Runner

I have always loved semiprecious stones and rocks with all their beautiful designs and shapes. My fascination with them started with my dad, as he was a goldsmith and used a variety of stones and rocks in his display cases in his store. Dad used to let me play with them when I was young and I never stopped. I still collect stones, smaller ones now, whenever I go on holiday and I still have some from dad. The Agate Geode was one of dad's favourite pieces, so I used it for my inspiration for the Agate table runner.

There is something very quiet about any form of embroidery when stitched white on white. The embroidered piece becomes quiet, letting the stitches engage in a subtle conversation. - Carla 92
