Nothing is new in the world of the needle arts except for the tools we use, improved fibres, fabric and the creation of new ones. What has happened however, is the evolution of the needle arts through the years, and I’m not even tapping into the fashion industry here. Traditional Quilting to Modern Quilting is one quick and recent example.

An old form of embroidery that’s resurfacing again is paper embroidery. When I embroider, I prefer fabric, but stitches and threads shine even when placed on paper! See more about this form of embroidery in Jo Gatenby’s feature, Exploring Paper Embroidery which includes two projects, Paper Heart and Kindred Spirits.

Let’s look at smocking as we remember it most clearly in this age: a lovely way to decorate garments by joining fabric pleats using parallel stitches, very popular in the last century. This kind of fabric manipulation, or smocking, has been around for at least 500 years. I say this ‘type’ because any time we sew, quilt, or embroider etc., we manipulate fabric.

Another series you won’t want to miss beginning in this issue is Thoughtful Soles Series by knitter Lorraine Thompson. Lorraine makes socks fun by incorporating zany ‘thoughts’ as part of the colour work to tickle your funny bone. See the first pair of socks in the series, Dark Mushrooms.

Although smocking isn't quite at the leading edge of crafting currently, the technique is a hot trend today when applied to home décor items, including furniture, and garments strolled on the fashion runways. Have you noticed? Discover more about this topic in Part 1 of The Beauty of Texture by Judith Marquis and see how to transform plain fabric into a trendy decorative item in your home.

As you browse this colourful issue, you might wonder what's up with the birds? The answer is quite simple, the projects were inspired by the beauty, colour palette and loving nature of

Lovebirds

Cheerfully,

So looking ahead on the future of the needle arts, I like to think the techniques we enjoy today will evolve, since thinking of a world without the needle arts is unimaginable for me at this time.

Tree of Life

Photo Frame As I was working on this project I was thinking of my mom and her life. The love of her family (children, grandchildren and great grandchildren) and her love of nature were a huge part of what made this woman such a special person. I wouldn’t be the creative spirit that I am today without the love and support of my mother. I wanted to include a branch for every member of her family but that would involve an entire forest so I used buttons and embellishments to represent some of the special people and things that made her life so special. Please use the tree design provided or take this opportunity to design your own tree. When the picture is added to your personalized frame it will complete the story of your Tree of Life.

Olyfun Purse

Olyfun fabric is one of the easiest, most versatile materials you’ll ever find. It’s known as ‘the everything material’. You can sew it, glue it, staple it, pin it or tie it. You can write on it, paint it, embellish it, stamp it or stencil it. You can cut it with scissors, rotary blade, or use a Brother Scan N Cut machine. You can use it as fabric or as paper. You can use it indoors or outdoors. And best of all, the edges won’t fray, tear, or fade so you don’t have to bother hemming it.

We used Olyfun fabric for our project and found it very easy to work with. But this project is also very scrap friendly. Choose a fabric that is preferable to you. In these instructions two options are offered to create your masterpiece: • Option A provides you with the opportunity to use your own creativity and crazy patching techniques to create two panels of your design. • Option B is for those who like a more structured approach and includes pattern pieces to be used.

Thoughtful Soles Series

Welcome to Thoughtful Soles Series, a zany collection of knitted sock patterns to tickle your funny bone every time you wear them. We start this series with Dark Mushrooms. Let’s make socks interesting!

Dark Mushrooms It’s Dark Down Here

I’ve been knitting now for over 30 years and received my Knitting Accreditation Level 2 through the Canadian Guild of Knitters. I’m very thrilled to have my witty socks published in my Thoughtful Soles Series. I had a lot of fun designing this collection of socks over the years, applying a sense of humour to the art of knitting. For this first installment, I used a mushroom motif and mushrooms grow in the dark… The mushroom strip on the leg is adapted from Jane Dupuis's Mushroom Kelliemuffs, lovely fingerless mits, originally published in Fair Isle Style: 20 Fresh Designs for a Classic Technique by Mary Jane Mucklestone. For symmetry the peerie motif goes in the opposite direction on the second sock. Sock 1 has words on the sole. Sock 2 has mushrooms on the sole. The mushroom top can be done in duplicate stitch. The heel is a honeycomb stitch and I made a star toe just to try something different. – Lorraine

Allegra

Sunset Shawl

Allegra Sunset is a memory I have of my first cruise I was on from Basel to Amsterdam with my mom and friends just this past September. We enjoyed a wonderful time on the Cruise Ship Excellence Allegra and the many memories of enjoying the beautiful sunset on the Rhine River. You’ll notice, the Allegra Sunset Shawl has lots of cables, these remind me of the gorgeous Canals in Amsterdam. Look closely you’ll notice they are distanced at various degrees. Amsterdam was surprisingly romantic and we have seen so little of it. ‘Mutt’ and Friends, thanks for the unforgettable memories we shared together. – Jacqueline 54

Lovebirds Fingerless Gloves These fingerless gloves are knit in the bright colours of tropical lovebirds, sure to give you a warm glow as you wear them. The lower and upper edges are knit in simple feather stitch patterns, with a row of hearts just around the base of the fingers. Of course, if you would prefer a bird of a different colour, try a couple of shades of brown and a nice red for robin gloves. Or white and some pale grey for doves. These are excellent candidates for a little stash busting and make great quick gifts. – Denise

paper embroidery

While paper piercing has been around since the 1700s, and string art has been around since the 1970s, it wasn’t until the ‘90s that designers began combining the two. I was first introduced to this art form a couple years ago, but have only recently begun exploring the technique, and trying my hand at design – in fact, I just released a chart of Celtic Knot designs for paper embroider. I’m so very pleased to offer two designs here, one easy enough for a beginner, the other detailed enough to please the enthusiast!

The Beauty of Texture - Part 1

Most people think of little girls’ dresses when the term smocking is mentioned. Oh, how many times have I heard “My mother smocked all my dresses when I was just a child” or “It’s lovely but a dying art”. Well I can tell you that neither of these two statements is true today! In this series of articles, we’ll explore a different kind of smocking, a form of fabric manipulation usually done from the back of the fabric. There are names for

each style we’ll explore but we’re grouping all under the heading of Fabric Manipulations. You’ll see how we can create the Beauty of Texture with them. They may be used in fashion garments, in home decor or simply as a framed work of art. You will see the basic form of the style. Then you will see how by making a few changes, you can create some really dynamic pieces. It is up to you to ‘crank up’ the fabrics and bring these design to life in your own way. So let us embark on this creative journey starting with a style often referred to as ‘Lattice Smocking’. Unlike traditional English smocking, this style has no elasticity. It takes up fabric both vertically and horizontally but less than English smocking. Note the width and length of fabric with which you start so you can calculate just how much the design takes up in your fabric; then determine what amount is required for a chosen project.

Hooking a Colourful Basket-topper

Sometimes the beauty of a craft is in the materials used rather than intricate design details. Hooking a basket-topper with colourful sari silk ribbon and textured yarn is a quick project that packs a beautiful punch! It can be hooked and put together in only a couple of days for that kick of instant gratification.
