What if we mix and match decorative elements from one ornament to another? With some ornaments it's easier to do. I would try sewing by machine the words or names, like those found on A Piece of My Heart ornaments, on the paper pieced apron strips after they're sewn together and stabilized. I would try the goldwork strip from the Goldwork Bell ornament, and glitz up the A Piece of My Heart ornament. I would make one side of the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and use it as an appliqué for a quilt, make several in more colours. I would love to make a larger decorative cushion sporting many Blue Jelly Bean Christmas houses all in a row in all sorts of bright colours! It would look adorable on a fireplace mantle. Make enough repeats of the Belarusan Nizanka ornament patterns for a larger piece of fabric, and take the apron templates to it, make sure the all edges are serged. There's a little thinking to it, but certainly not impossible. The possibilities are endless if we look beyond what is pictured in these pages.

Starting a new series, our Pulled Thread Pastries was created by Kim Beamish. These cushions are intended to be a learning tool for pulled thread patterns, but even here, imagine the possibilities for these designs? Do you see a favourite? Which pattern would you choose to make a full blown decorative cushion, a tablecloth or bed sheet edging or table runner? The possibilities are what your creative heart desires.

Let's stretch our imagination a little.

Time permitting, I would pick my favourite pattern and fabric to make a smocked surface of about one by two meters then frame it and hang it over a bed or sofa. Wine Bottle Aprons Who doesn’t like to gift a bottle of wine for a dinner party, house warming, Christmas or just because? These fun decorative aprons allow you to use up scraps, practise quilting skills and dress up a wine bottle. Make the smaller size for a tree ornament or gift tag. When we think of ornaments, most of us envision Christmas décor. My goal is to modernize this conception and create decorative ornaments that can be displayed all year round. A star is a shape that is not defined by a season, just like the stars in the sky, no two are the same. I created two styles that can easily be displayed and enjoyed all year round. India is not a shy country. It is dazzling and chaotic and alive in a way that defies logic. It often astonishes first-time visitors. But its boldness – including the dirt and noise and vibrancy – veils a culture of intense spirituality and diversity. The Ahir people live in northern western India where their principal occupation is cow-herding. More recently, they’ve risen to minor fame as the creators of intricate embroidery. The embroidery of Ahir women is representative of India. It’s bold, colourful and unabashed. It is definitely not your grandma’s monogrammed hankie. It demands to be displayed, hung on walls, and worn at weddings. It is treasured and flaunted. Like many of India’s creations, it is birthed from a culture of tradition, painstaking labour, and proud artisanship.

When I sat down to create this project, I intended to miniaturize an existing pattern. I quickly realized that with sock weight yarn this would be a LOT of knitting, so in the interest of speed and a looming deadline, I opted for double knitting yarn. This pattern mimics the construction steps for a full-size sweater, with set-in sleeves knit from the top down. To have even more fun with this project, use yarn scraps to make ‘ugly sweater’ ornaments!

Sock 1 Winter is Coming Sock 2 Knit Faster I believe I saw these words printed on a tote bag – obviously one meant to carry a knitting project. I like the phrase because I welcome any excuse to knit. To suggest winter, I charted reindeer and bare trees for motifs in the colour stranding. I reversed the main and contrast colours to avoid second sock syndrome.

I have a good friend who creates dozens of wonderful ornaments every year for family and friends, and for the past couple of years she has used my designs – one year creating delightful little 3D snowmen; another year gorgeous top hat ornaments… so when she said “What are you designing for me this year”, and then Carla said “I want to do another ornament issue”, things just came together! Seminar 2019 – Beyond the Edge

The Embroiderers’ Association of Canada (EAC) and the Embroiderers’ Guild of Victoria (EGV) are hosting the 2019 national seminar in Victoria, British Columbia. This annual event draws hundreds of participants keen to expand their knowledge and skills in a variety of needlework techniques. A warm, West Coast welcome awaits all who come to Victoria in May 2019 for a visit and stay to stitch among friends. Planning for ‘Beyond the Edge’ has happily consumed a dedicated team of volunteers for the past two years. The annual Seminar will be held at the scenic University of Victoria, situated on the traditional lands of the WSÁNEĆ (Saanich), Lkwungen (Songhees), and Wyomilth (Esquimalt) peoples of the Coast Salish Nation. The springtime gardens of Victoria will be in full bloom in May – considered to be the most beautiful time of the year by residents and visitors alike. Of special note are the rhododendrons resplendent in Finnerty Gardens on the grounds of the university. Attendees will have ample time to enjoy the flowers during a week of exciting classes and planned activities. So, reserve the dates – May 14 to May 19, 2019 – and consider joining us for ‘Beyond the Edge’. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our common passion for needlework and textile art during a very special week. If you have been following this series of articles, so far, we have covered two traditional patterns which when investigated created numerous effects both on solid and checked fabrics. The stitching was done on the back of the fabric in each case creating some very interesting and exciting possibilities when venturing from the form of the traditional stitches. It’s hoped that you, the needle artist, will carry on and find more designs and/or applications. This time we explore a third pattern of stitching which creates most interesting formations on the surface of the fabric. Sometimes the back of your work will be as interesting, if not more interesting, than the right side! This time, unless you can find checked fabric with much larger grid,

Try all types of fabrics from satin to velvet, furry plush to dupioni, solids, stripes, even checks. Space and time have limited what has been stitched in this installment. But you can create all manner of texture! Experiment with each of these graphs using different fabrics. There are so many more variations you can create from the basic design. Try different spacing, turning the triangles in different directions and using different fabrics to see what effects can be created. Always check front and back to see what you have created. Layer shears over solids to see what happens to colours. If the back of design is more appealing, clip the threads after each triangle rather than carrying it and incorporate a sparkling bead or subtle pearl to conceal the knots. To do this, triangle size was reduced to ½” x ½”. Draw a line through grid on bias to start. Then fill in triangles. Take care when doing this the first time so pattern works out. Then try different spacing to see what happens to the fabric front and back. As graphed, this design requires a lot of fabric and a lot of planning. Effect created was quite interesting and tiny sparkles of beads were introduced to the shot taffeta sample. This one might be better left unblocked.
