...rainy day Blues or rainy day Although a rainy day can be very gloomy, for me it's Bliss?
And then there's always hopscotch! Colleen offers the Hop to It! as a runner, also great for a child's room but fun for a kitchen table too. Pick your favourite Banyan Batiks colorways, and you'll love it forever.
You've got to love Jo's Cute Boots, she's totally right, if you have to go outside in the rain, wear cute and colourful boots! I gotta get a pair.
Be Happy
There are all sorts of project ideas that spell comfort and lounging about the house when you know no one will ring your doorbell that rainy day. To name a few, Sarah's Blissful Butterflies quilt, Jacqueline's In the Mood tunic and Lisa's Comfort Crescent Shawl in the very soft Chic Sheep merino wool yarn. Lorraine's Colourwash Socks will have you singing 'You are My Sunshine' the whole day long!
&
Within this issue you'll find many reasons to be grateful for a little rain. Favourite board games turned into quilt tops and huge wallhangings as in Elaine's Rainy Day Fun puzzle quilt. It can be used in a kindergarten classroom, but imagine making it for a child's bedroom, bedtime will be a lot of fun! And my all-time favourite bedtime game, I Spy, can be a quilt to play and snuggle! See how Elaine chose to make hers!
How about that umbrella project born out of sheer button love? See how it's done easily using the Designer EPIC, this may be addictive, but hey, what craft isn't?
Make
always bliss! Imagine, raindrops on the window pane and I'm knitting on the sofa - bliss. Colourful yarn on my needles, probably my favourite colours to boot, and a chance to get ahead of the knitting project. I might even indulge in quilting as well. Oh, this makes me think about UFOs, might rainy days be a good marker for picking up an unfinished project? Up to you.
Maybe you'll take advantage of the rainy day to reorganize your craft room, or craft closet? See what Cynthia has to say about how to finish it in one day or at least to get you started. You know, reorganizing your crafting space can be so gratifying! It's time to get busy with these exciting crafting ideas! Let's go! Cheerfully,

This quilt was inspired by my daughter's high school prom theme of enchanted forest. The beautiful Banyan Batiks set the stage to create a magical evening forest canopy for the butterflies to shine in – much like I hoped the prom did for my graduate! The pattern is for 3 butterflies of each set on the same background fabric. I made more butterflies than I needed and you can too – there’s enough fabric to make more butterflies. For the quilt pictured,
30
I varied the backgrounds with the butterflies and even made more butterflies for the back! To help me decide on butterfly placement, I put the pink hued fabrics on grey backgrounds and orange on green backgrounds; the red I mixed on all three background colours. The simplest way to explain the color selection in the quilt is that it's designed as a nine patch with blue and grey batiks forming the corner and middle backgrounds with green batik backgrounds between them. The butterfly
panels are a modified nine patch and the butterfly background batik coordinates with one of the butterfly fabrics in the panel. There are many different methods of making HSTs. There are also many different tools and rulers available to make them. We encourage you to use the method you prefer and feel the most comfortable with. The following HST method is the one that we believe is tried and tested, and seems to be the favorite method of quilters, when not using a tool or ruler. – Sarah

Hop to It! These two quick and easy placemats, for you or as a gift, are a great way to use any of the extra 2½” segments left from making the Hop to It! Runner.
With a life long passion for all things creative, and way too many creative outlets to list, I have always returned to sewing and quilting. As a previous quilt shop owner, I know the lure of beautiful fabrics, fresh designs and inspiring projects that so many of us can never resist, and nor would we want to! The north wind brings change, and Northwind Designs, while respecting the tradition of quilting, brings a fresh change and renewal to modern quilting. As a quiltmaker for many years, I feel inspired and take comfort in knowing that so many quilters of all ages continue to embrace the craft with fresh designs and fabrics, keeping the art of quiltmaking alive and flourishing! I hope you enjoy making this runner as much as I did, using this new collection called Recess and Ketan, part of the new Banyan Batik fabric collection from Northcott Silk Inc., a Canadian fabric company. Make this fun project on a rainy day or ‘for’ a rainy day! This runner reminds me of playing hopscotch many years ago, a real neighbourhood favourite. We also love using this runner as a scoreboard for our – Colleen family card games!

socks
Sock 1 You are my sunshine Sock 2 You make me happy
I named this pair of socks, ‘Colourwash’ because they remind me of watercolour paintings. They feature a heart motif and an afterthought heel. This heel allows uninterrupted patterning around the foot which is why I have used it again even though my favourite heel is the standard heel flap and gusset. These socks make the perfect pair on a gloomy day of rain. – Lorraine

In the Mood Tunic
KnitswissYarns is like rainbow and a treasure. You have probably noticed over the past several issues that I strive to be unique in the patterns I create for A Needle Pulling Thread. It is an immense pleasure and fun to design using my luxurious hand-dyed yarns. In the Mood Tunic is no exception and is unique in many ways. I worked with three colours, Cream, Orange, Blue, that are blended together in different strengths over each skein. My KnitswissYarns Sport Weight yarn gives the tunic a very comfortable and relaxed draping that will flatter your body shape. It can be worn in several ways, off the shoulder, the side length can be worn on the left or right, over jeans or pencil skirt, depending on your style and mood. The uneven edges give the illusion of the hour glass shaping. Don't be shy have fun with using as many colours as you like...or work it up in one colour. It’s the perfect pattern for getting very comfortable knitting short rows. Truly, this is a tunic for fun and happy moments. – Jacqueline

Since the theme for this issue is rainy days, I searched through my quotes collection until I found the perfect one – and this adorable duckling in his fun red boots fit the design to a T! The idea of the stitched Pavouk came from the 3 dimensional straw ornament that's very popular in Belarus. The word pavouk means ‘a spider’. Salamiany Pavouk, straw Pavouk, is one of the oldest Belarusan talismans. Because of its shape, it's considered a sacred item, and the process used to craft it, is believed to repeat God’s geometric process of the creation of the Universe.
‘Pavouk’ Talisman It's usually hung to the ceiling or doorway and often to a crib. It can be hung at the window or in the car. A stitched Pavouk may also be framed. The design for this talisman is based on the ‘ripples-on-water’ design often used on Belarusan coverlets. – Iryna

A straw Pavouk is typically made at the beginning of a new year and is believed to protect the home and its family the whole year long. It is thought to catch negative energy and transmute it, very much like a dreamcatcher.

In this final segment on the Beauty of Texture, two types of smocking are presented; both based on individual motifs as opposed to linear stitches or those for which the threads carry from one motif to the next. We start with Flower smocking which gives an all-over design of crisply pointed petals. But when the squares are moved about the graph for different spacing or the squares enlarged or turned on their axis, very different effects can be created! Even roses, if you have the patience to manipulate the fabric.

The Beauty of Texture Part 4 The second type of smocking is Popcorn smocking. Seldom seen or recognized, this form of smocking is quite old and rather simple to create. It creates wonderful texture with little effort and can be utilized over a large area with little stitching involved. Strong thread and good knots will give the best results for both. Neither of these forms of smocking have any stretch and look best in solid fabrics. But do not hesitate to experiment with two toned stripes and gingham checks of various sizes. Each fabric will lend itself differently and ‘talk’ to you during the creative process. You'll find all kinds of – Judith possibilities if you explore!
