Many LYS or LQS are selling online, taking orders by phone or email with curb pick-up options all for the purpose of keeping us safe and busy at home, crafting.

I invite you to share your finished projects, the ones you've conquered as well as the ones born from isolation, and post these with #TheSewGoesOn. Because, once the virus has been tamed, we will, as avid crafters keep crafting. Stay safe and stay calm.

Water Resistant Lunch Bag

Going to school is always a special time. So when I was looking for a gift idea, I thought about my grandchildren. I always like to give them something special for back to school; my granddaughter was so excited to go to Grade 1 and stay for lunch. I combined her excitement for staying for lunch, her love of butterflies and the colour purple, and my love to embellish fabric, to create a one-of-a-kind water resistant, insulated lunch.

Using Gütermann cotton thread, new Odicoat from Odif and Unique Quilting Therm Fleece, this bag will keep the lunch cool or warm and is easy to wipe clean. Odif Odicoat protects your fabrics and projects. It’s resistant to water and stains, and is great to use for placemats, bags, aprons, tablecloths and more.

Have fun and create your own bag using those left-over pieces in your stash. You can use my measurements or change the size, make it water resistant or not, the choice is yours. – Cathy

Sewing Instructions TIP For this project I suggest that Clover Clips are used instead of pins. Pinning waterproof fabric will create holes, making the final project less waterproof. 1. Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of pocket lining. 2. Stitch the top edge of the pocket and lining right sides together. 3. Press seam, turn right sides out. Top stitch top edge. 4. Place finished pocket on lower edge of one lining piece. Clip in place. 5. Measure an ice packet. Add ½” to this size. Stitch two vertical rows to create three pockets; one for a napkin, center for the ice packet (use above measurement) and one for that special snack. Baste the side seams together. 6. On the lower edge cut a 2” square from each corner. Note: This will be for the box corner. 7. Stitch bottom edge of the pocket 2” up from the bottom, inner corner of the cut corner to the inner corner. 8. Cut the 2” squares out of the other piece of lining and the outer bag to create box corners. 9. Place the outer fabric right sides together. Sew side seams and lower edge. Do not sew the cut-out area.

10. To create a box corner, match the lower seam and side seam right side together, clip with the Clover Clips. Sew across. 11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for the lining. 12. Adding the closure: slide one piece of the parachute clip onto the ribbon. Fold over about 4” sew in place. Creating a 1½” loop. 13. Slide the other end of the parachute clip on the other end of the ribbon. Double check the clip is the right direction. 14. Measure the top edge of the bag to determine the final length of the ribbon. Fold over 4” on the end of the ribbon, creating about a 1½” loop. Trim off any excess. Sew on the second side of the clip. 15. Measure 1½” down from the bag top. Sew ribbon closure in place. 16. Insert lining into bag wrong sides together, match the side seams. Clip to hold in place. 17. Baste. 18. Sew double-fold bias binding to the top. 19. Fill the bag full of treats, turn the top over a couple of times. 20. Enjoy the look in the eyes of that special little grandchild.

Black Cat Quilt Scraps 365 days quilt scraps challenge

This black cat is the 280th patchwork block in Olesya’s year-long quilt scrap challenge 2019. The challenge has been a resounding success for Olesya on social media. She published a book, Moments in Pieces, to celebrate the achievement. a Birthday Quilt

This quilt was designed as a gift for my sister's fortieth birthday. She’s also a quilter and gave me several of the fabrics used in this quilt. She’s an eclectic individual involved in several fiber arts including knitting. I thought she would enjoy a quilt made up of a variety of fabrics and that the large flying geese blocks can also be seen as giant knitted stitches! I hope she enjoys having it draped across her legs while enjoying a good book, a tennis match, or more likely, while knitting and watching a Muppet movie. Happy Birthday, sis! – Sarah

This is How I Roll

When asked to make a quilt about a relative, I had to think. What fabric collection would work? Who would be the recipient of the quilt? However, when I saw the Ride On collection by Banyan Batiks and being a cycling fanatic, I decided that the relative should be ME! Who says you can have too many quilts? I chose my favourite colours from all four colourways of the Ride On collection including Purple Ocean, Berry Orange, Silver Stone, and Brown Honey. I love the vibrant colours, I love the treads as they create a crisscross path across the surface of the quilt and look at all those bike designs. What Crazy Quilter on a Bike wouldn’t want this quilt? – Elaine

Woven Pathways

My quilt is made for my mother who celebrates her 90th birthday this year. She taught me to sew and always encourages and supports me, particularly in my business as quilt designer, teacher, author and, recently, as a fabric designer.

When thinking about her special birthday my mind wandered to women in our family, particularly my mother, my grandmother and me. I thought of how we are linked together through the generations. As I played with the design for this one-block quilt I discovered a way to arrange 3 'links' that weave in and out, one link to represent each of us. When selecting fabrics I chose orange for my mother's link since she loves fall colours and turquoise for me because I’m drawn to the colours of water. For the link that weaves in and out through the other links I chose purple for my grandmother. She used purple accents throughout her home. Perhaps it reminded her of thistles and her Scottish heritage. The resulting quilt is a triadic colour scheme which is a pleasing combination. I chose a fabric with strong value contrast for the background. Although it’s busy and large scale, the contrast works well and adds visual texture to the quilt. I hope you’ll select colours that have meaning for you to make your quilt. –Daphne

A Tea Cozy for the Adventurous Knitter This project is a tea cozy covered with an alphabet of knitting terms. It’s a pattern which gives the opportunity to use colour-stranding and to try steeking. Of course, it can be made without the steeks, just knit the front and the back separately and then join above and below the openings. I prefer to knit in the round when I’m doing colour work, hence the need for steeks. This pattern could be made into a hat if you knit just the charts and used a larger needle. Bonus! – Lorraine

Colours for Diane Shawl There is the family you are born into, and there is the family you choose. A group of colleagues, all now retired from teaching, is one such chosen family for me. Diane, a knitter, is part of that family, and since knitters rarely receive hand knitted gifts, I have designed this shawl for her. Diane loves colour so I have chosen a curated collection of bright shades from Koigu Wool Designs. Choose more subdued shades, or knit the entire shawl in one variegated, tonal or solid-coloured yarn for your more conservative relatives. Approximately 800 yards of yarn are required to knit a shawl to the size of the sample. With additional yarn, you could make a larger shawl; the eyelet pattern and/or the border pattern can be repeated as many times as desired. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Nancy 64

Bronze Relief Scarf

When I was a child, Dad would take me to the farm to visit his parents, and I remember that I always had more fun when his younger brother, John, was also there. Uncle John, now in his eighties, is retired, but not retiring. He and his wife of fifty years are both very active in their community. He has faced some health challenges in recent years and has borne the difficulties with determination and humour. This scarf, knit in a bronze colour, symbolizes his strength of character–and complements his brown leather jacket. – Nancy

This garment in the Cronetics method that I created many years ago, is the first of its kind to be presented to the public. Ember Anne 2020

This design was inspired both by the celebration of our newest family member, Ember Anne, and from cross stitch samplers common to my province in the mid 1800s. Ember’s birth provided the perfect opportunity to pull motifs from antique samplers to create something entirely new. Antique samplers were often stitched by very young girls and sometimes mistakes were made. In keeping with this aspect of antique samplers, you’ll find common mistakes incorporated into this design. Therefore, watch your counting carefully! - Patty

I made this Talisman for my son who is an athlete. He takes this good luck charm to all cycling races, keeping it in his pocket. I taught him how to use it. Within the Talisman, there are three ancient magic symbols. The main one is the burdock plant. The burdock itself is a symbol of good, happy luck. As the head of the burdock plant has burs, and burs are therefore clingy, it represents good luck clinging to whomever holds the charm. It’s also important to note that the colour of burdock is purple. The sign of burdock is the very stylised outer pattern of both designs.

Good Luck In the center of the red side of the charm is the solar symbol of the fern flower which symbolizes strength and health. In the center of the purple side is a symbol that represents the word ‘your’, interpreted as ‘everyone has its own ancestor, or forefather’. In Belarusan it’s called Chur. I remember as a child playing games with friends, we often called out, “Chur, chur...!”, as if calling out some magic spell to win. It's a ritual now before the start of a race or any important event, that my son will say three times, Chur! to me. Which implies ‘Chur help me, grant me a winning race’. And so, the spell goes. – Iryna

Tooth Fairy Cushion

There comes a time in most children’s lives when they’ll no longer want to wear smocking. But do not despair if you’re a mom or grandmother who loves to smock and still want to do so for your little ones. There are other things you can create which they don’t have to wear like this little tooth fairy cushion. Picture smocking is yet another form of smocking which employs rows of cable stitches mirror imaged to build objects or delightful characters. When stitching this kind of smocking, it might help to think of it as building with Lego© blocks. 90

This little Tooth Fairy Cushion can be created in any colour using coordinating fabrics and trimmed with ruffles, piping or medium to large rick rack. Our sample has been stitched in flannel, framed in grosgrain ribbon and applied to the surface of the cushion fabric. Several stitches (which can be found in most embroidery books) and methods have been employed to achieve finished design. If you don’t smock, this design could easily be converted to cross stitch or quilted appliqué, even shadow work. – Judith
