Neutral with a
Pop!
I still adore colour, but there’s a lot to experience when looking at neutrals whether they make a bold or subtle statement. I’m very excited about this issue, the designers have created a selection of projects that reflect the necessity of neutral colours to make other colours take center stage! I hope you will endeavour to make these suggested projects your own by using your favourite neutrals and your favourite pop of colour. As always, stay safe, and stay calm.
Stay Calm
But as I slowly added very few decorative items for that ‘pop’ of colour to these now quiet rooms, I added some ‘pop’ to my daily routine as well. I kept early morning walks on my ‘list of favourites’, regardless of the
weather. These keep me in tune with nature, nourish me, and clear my thoughts. And of course, the needle arts are always a favourite.
&
I had also called on the painter and had the whole house painted with
soft comforting neutrals like super soft taupes to chalk-like colors. There are so many beautiful and centering neutrals from which to choose! Within a couple of weeks of adopting a new way of life, the energy within myself and in my surroundings, started to shift, from rushing about from task to task to an inspired way of life led by what was most important to me.
Make
At the time I was mulling over a theme for this issue, it was a very busy time in my life, more than the usual. It called me to look for ways to simplify my days attempting to make them more tolerable, less exhausting, and keeping only what needed to be done. I became very selective in what I listened to, said yes to, and, as I had felt for several years that I had been eating too much, I cut down to two delicious meals a day.
Cheerfully,
of colour

For my birthday, my husband surprised me with golf lessons and all the necessary golf accessories to make me look like a pro, including golf shoes. When the theme for this issue came out – Neutral with a Pop of Colour – I knew I wanted to make a fun bag for my new shoes. This bag has a waterproof lining, and bound seams - perfect for wet shoes after a game of golf in dewy grass. The bag fits my Size 7 shoes with plenty of extra room, so it will fit larger size shoes, too.

Star Gazing Table Runner While planning my project for the theme – Neutral with a Pop of Colour – modern quilting came to mind and to me nothing is more modern than quilting with embroidery! The 260 x 260mm, creative™ Grand Quilters Hoop along with the free beautiful quilting designs that are available for it, made this theme easy to plan. A quick edit in the new mySewnet™ Embroidery Software and I was ready to start embroidering my Star Gazing runner! I love the look of this runner and I hope you will enjoy this project. – Betty

Some of my favourite ‘me made’ gifts are customized cushions. People love the personal touch that commemorates a name, date, or special occasion. This decorative cushion is one of my favourite embroidery designs.
Modern Monogram Cushion
The Brother Luminaire XP2 has some beautiful built-in monogram embroidery designs, and when coupled with the auto design fill feature you can create a stunning cushion quickly and easily. I spiced up this pillow with a pop of colour – for a very sweet young woman. – Lynn

Pop Pouch
There is no such thing as having too many pouches! Just look at this super cute pop pouch with a bonnie fluffy cat named Plushy. Such a round pouch with a funny character is so much fun to sew. The project is a mix of piecing, appliqué, hand (machine) quilting, stitching, and drawing. To add pop to the neutral fabrics, I picked a bright orange fabric for Plushy’s ear. I decided that adorable paws were a great way to make a special zip pull! – Olesya

bright coloured fabrics with a black or a white background; so, when I started designing this layout using a quilt design software I decided to play with a variety of background colours just for the fun of it. I was totally amazed to discover
how different backgrounds completely change the look of the quilt. It was a difficult choice but, in the end, I felt that using this taupe-coloured fabric was going to yield the most attractive contrast. – Paul

Floral Fancy Cushion Cover As a professional in the quilting industry, I am always curious about other creative outlets. Spending the past fourteen months at home provided an opportunity to take many online classes. I have kept journals my entire life so venturing into art journaling seemed like a natural. I have dabbled a bit with it in the past but never seemed to have the time to really explore the various techniques and styles. This past year I have made a conscious effort to create a variety of art journals and this wool project was inspired by my flower journal. - Nellie

Poppin’ Blocks Sweater
This sweater is designed to have a stack of different-sized blocks trail up the left side of the front, but you can run one up the sleeve(s) instead. To do this, add a column of stitches on the right of the chart. Center the 25 sts on the sleeve and place stitch markers for reference. If additional blocks are needed beyond 144 rows, go back to Row 57 or Row 87 and knit to the top of the sleeve.

Bali Pops Socks
SOCK 1 ONE GOOD TURN SOCK 2 GETS MOST OF THE QUILT! Pops of colour in knitting can only mean one thing – bobbles. I made Bali Pops with randomly placed bobbles using yarn that reminded me of the batik fabrics I used for patchwork quilting. In the second pair, Raspberry Seeds Socks, the bobbles are sedately lined and down the fronts and backs and the colour contrast is sharper. Other than the colours and bobble placement, the socks are constructed the same. Both pairs feature twisted-rib cuffs, honeycomb heels with a square turn and shaped toes. To complete my nod to quilting the words on the soles are from a favourite quilt label. – Lorraine 66

“Bee” is for Blankie The Bee Stitch is simple to knit, and it creates a lovely, textured fabric that traps air and helps insulate—perfect for blankets. Here, it is knit in Universal Wool Pop, a round, multi-plied yarn that is smooth and soft, with great stitch definition. The bamboo, wool and polyamide fibres in the yarn take dye differently, resulting in a slightly heathered effect with a subtle sheen. The Marmalade colour in the sample is another reference to the bee, and it pops against the neutral Silken grey. The 2-stitch, 4-row repeat makes this project easy to re-size, even for beginners, but the math has been done for you here for five different sizes. – Nancy

The town of Slutsak became famous for making the most expensive and luxurious piece of garment of the Shlachta, the privileged noble class of medieval Belarus. Today, the Slutsak Belts are widely known as a Belarusan national relic. These reversible belts were woven from silk, gold, and silver threads measuring up to 4m long and 50cm wide. Oriental patterns boasting traditional flowers like chamomile, cornflower, forget-menots, oak, and maple leaves, adorned the luxurious belts. They were custom made and weaving one belt could easily have taken almost a year to finish. Its cost was equated to that of jewelry, therefore becoming a status symbol of the Shlachta. It was common for these belts to be sent to a neighboring country as a diplomatic gift. Over the centuries, they have become an invaluable textile work of art. – Iryna

Woven Diamonds
Several years ago, while working as a smocking teacher at a knitting shop in Aurora, ON. I spent quiet store hours
browsing knitting books and magazines for ideas for my smocking designs. This is where inspiration came to me for the original piece photographed here. I worked it out but couldn’t find a place to make use of it, I had packed it away with other pieces I had toyed with. When Carla told me about this issue, ‘lights’ flashed on, as they say, and the hunt was on to find this piece of stitching. So evolved this project. It just goes to show how one form of needlework can inspire stitching in another. There is only one simple stitch, but it is the spacing and colour changes that create your challenge. At my end, it was the challenge of graphing and working out the design to fit the parameters Carla had set out. I hope you give it a try and play with it to make it your own.
