Inspired by WORDS

For this issue, I asked designers to create a project that reflects their word(s) for the Covid experience, you’ll find these are words of gratitude, friendship, compassion, love, and enlightenment. I hope you are inspired by these projects and that you highlight your word(s) in the process. As you already know, dear friends, there is a lot of calm to be experienced when engaging in needlework, like engaging in meditation. Therefore, we return to it faithfully.

Stay Calm

Covid is an experience we will never forget and one that we experienced together and yet lived through it differently. It’s an experience that brought forth far more than the repercussions of a single virus.

&

Questions and scenarios rattled about in my head, as it did for all of us around the world. It took some time to digest the news of the virus. While implementing measures that needed to take place, a feeling of calm washed over me; my second word. Not because everything was resolved in my world and in the world, far from it, but because when faced with a challenge that brought fear and uncertainty, my reaction was to stay calm. If I react in fear, I cannot think. If I react in rage, I cannot create. Staying calm is instrumental to everything I

do for my family and work. And as it turns out, my family and my work helped me stay calm. I tried to imagine what the experience might have been like if Covid had happened before we had cellphones and the internet, and video calls that keep us in touch. With that perspective in mind, gratitude filled my heart for the good things in my life; my third word.

Make

I can be a very chatty person, as family and friends will attest, but at the onset of Covid, I was dumbfounded; my first word. What do I, we, make of this? What are the repercussions? How long will it take for all of us and everything to recover from this experience?

As always, stay safe, and stay calm. Cheerfully,

I ran across an anonymous quote recently about beauty and quilting. I thought this little bit of wisdom was very appropriate for the front of the quilt journal I planned to make. I also wanted to use metallic threads to embellish the journal cover to make it extra special, as it will be a gift for a special friend who is also a wonderful quilter. While I sewed, I reflected on the beauty of my friend as a person, and the beauty of our friendship that has developed through the many little events we’ve shared – just like the many little stitches of a beautiful quilt. If you want to make one of these quilt journals for yourself and you’ve never used metallic threads in your quilting, make sure to read my article – Get Your Metal On! - in this issue for 7 great tips on using metallic threads. – Heather

Words are powerful and can be used in many ways: labels, meanings, connotations, implications. The words that capture this last year and a half with Covid for me are mental health. So much about our environment changed and continues to change and the implications to everyone’s mental health may not be understood for a while. I struggled a lot even though I was in a relatively secure position, I could work from home, physically distancing myself was not difficult as it was already familiar to me as an introvert, my family was healthy, and no one became seriously ill. The scale of impact that I could not have anticipated was to my mental health. Things that I used to be able to figure out became confusing, I began to experience increased anxiety (while also learning I was in a state of perpetual anxiety already) and I even had panic attacks.

Family and Friends Quilt When the theme of this issue was announced I had no idea what word to use, much less the technique I’d use. I asked my Facebook friends what positive words best reflected the pandemic. There were many great words, but three that stuck with me were family, friends, and awakening. As a single person living alone, staying home during the pandemic had its moments. Some of those moments were difficult, while others were fun. As always, my family and friends were there for me, and we supported each other in every possible way. My friends are like family and my family are like friends. For that reason, I decided to use the word family, and include the word friend in Braille so, should my blind friend come to visit, he would also feel welcome. I encourage you to make a word quilt with a word that has meaning for you. – Paul

Give Thanks Table Runner Words are powerful and can mean many things, depending on their usage. They can be uplifting, and they can bring us down. We’re fortunate to have the power and freedom of speech where we live.

There were many possibilities with the theme of Words of Gratitude and Wisdom; the dilemma was which one to choose. For this project, I went with gratitude.

There are many ways to put letters or the concept of letters on a project – appliqué comes to mind. However, I’m in love with the mySewnet Embroidery Software with over 246 fonts and the ability to create additional fonts. I decided to stitch my Words of Gratitude as an embroidery file I designed in the mySewnet Embroidery Software. I played with shaping the word ‘thanks’ and created a mirrored motif rather than have the word stand out by itself. I love the subtle look. You can download the THANKS motif embroidery file (.vp4) on Project Creator at mySewnet™. Feel free to use the design for your project or follow along with my instructions. – Elaine

This project involves colourstranding. It is worked in the round and features an alphabet of words naming many kinds of fibre. This pattern could be adapted to make a knitting bag too. Use a larger needle, I suggest a 2.75mm to make the bag roomier. Line it with muslin and make a longer draw string. – Lorraine

Simply Put

Socks SOCK 1 BE NICE SOCK 2 BE KIND

The words on my socks, Be Nice, Be Kind are blurry because of the self-striping yarn I used for contrast. I almost re-knit them but then realized that because 2020 was a big blur, the look is appropriate. The design on the legs is meant to represent the ups and downs of the year and because I used the contrast yarn just as it came off the ball it suggests irregularity. I spent 2020 searching for a new normal. Unrelated to but amid the pandemic my husband died. The sentiment on the socks is very simple and I am so deeply grateful for the many gestures of kindness and nice words that helped me to keep moving forward. – Lorraine 64

grace rug The word grace has several different meanings, the one I think of most when I chose to hook it was “courteous goodwill”, for that is something we all need at times. This year I have thought a lot about the word grace, and I have tried to carry the thought with me. It reminds me not to be short tempered, inconsiderate, or intolerant of minor things. Mind you, I don’t always get it right. When I don’t get it right, I have this word hanging around my studio to remind myself of my misdemeanours. It’s quite helpful having a word to carry around with you as you go about your life. Even more so if you have it hanging on the walls of your home or studio.

72

A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

issue 57

Hooking the word makes me really think about it; not just it’s meaning as a definition but about what it means for me and why I chose it. I have so much to be grateful for. I get to hook rugs every day and live a creative life and business. I know that I have this not only because of hard work but because of grace. I have benefitted so much from the grace of others who have given me opportunities, shared their space with me, and supported me in my work and business. I am immensely grateful. Grace is the word I have chosen to hook but I believe that we each have our own stories and experiences and therefore we each have our own words that we need to carry around with us. I encourage you to choose your word and hook it. - Deanne

Words of Comfort

When I sat down to think about words of gratitude and wisdom, I couldn’t nail down just one. The past two years have been hard for everyone, but there were many things that I was grateful for during this time and the words in my design reflect this. I always count home, family, and friends as the things I am most grateful for and during covid staying healthy was topmost on everyone’s minds. Working all through Covid as a frontline pharmacist was at times very

stressful, and my creative pursuits such as quilting, punchneedle, and embroidery helped me to balance my mind and emotions. We lost three pets during covid and adopted a 12-year-old rescue dog (who LOVES his daily walks), so the paw prints represent how grateful I am for the presence of all of them in my life. And of course, coffee…how would I survive without THAT!! - Christine
