One of my favourite things is to stand barefoot on cool tiles on a hot summer day. It’s a refreshing feeling.
From the practical and ordinary tiles to the most sublime tilework designs created in the world, tilework is an abundant source of ideas to apply to the needle arts across all categories. Drawing from cultural influences and modern tilework, the designers in this issue explore the techniques to interpret tile designs into lovingly crafted needlework projects.
Quilting techniques explored in this issue are appliqué, free motion quilting, working with half-square triangles, and machine embroidery. Consider one tile as your quilt block and you have the starting point for your quilt pattern.
As in the photos below, I can see so many techniques that can be used for quilting: cathedral window quilting technique, making diamonds using 45° triangle rulers, and using scrap fabric to make intricate kaleidoscope designs, although, oh my gosh, what a task that would be, it would look stunning!
In knitting, tilework is expressed using lacework and mosaic knitting. Mosaic knitting can be daunting for some of us but trying it out by making a cushion cover is like knitting a larger swatch.
ditor'sE letter
If you want to take your crochet skills up a notch, try Ruth Forbes’s Spring Posy Cushion Cover. This is an advanced skill-level project but worth sinking your crochet hook into. The cover is made up of four “tiles” or “swatches” that display beautiful bouquets of posies in relief, mimicking embossed tiles. Breaking the project down to making one swatch at a time is an excellent way to learn intricate stitches.
The issue wouldn’t be complete without embroidery options. It seems to me that embroideries in general look sculpted or chiselled, where the work is raised from the background as in the blue and white tilework example below.
The designers in this issue explored the theme with great gusto, and we just scratched the surface of possibilities! I hope you enjoy tilework as an inspiring source for your needlework designs. Enjoy your creative journey.
Cheerfully,
Inspired byTiles

My Japanese Garden Wall Art
When I was a girl, my family provided a short-term homestay to a Japanese high school student named Ako. I recall Ako as a quiet and gracious young woman, and when she left, she gifted me with a lovely Japanese Yukata (a summer-weight kimono), which I have kept and treasured all these years. I’ve often thought about creating an art quilt with that Yukata, and this issue’s theme provided the perfect opportunity to finally cut into the lovely floral cotton fabric. I used the hexagon shape for the blocks as it reminds me of paving tiles in a Japanese garden, and the sashiko flowers float like lilies in a Koi pond. – Heather

Take Timequilt
Hi! I’m Jennifer Houlden from Quilts by Jen. I’m a quilt/pattern designer and textile artist. I love to teach workshops and present trunk shows. I’m also passionate about using colour and creating secondary designs within my patterns while giving the illusion of movement in the design. Tiles have always fascinated me, and their designs make great quilts. The Take Time Quilt is created with just one block that when put together has the look of an hourglass where the dark triangles and cornerstones meet up. It also creates an elongated star with those dark triangles.
I had a hard time choosing what fabric combo to use for this quilt and finally went with a soft batik palette that reminded me of the ocean and beach. Life is about taking time for ourselves whether it be to let the sand squish between our toes while walking along the beach and watching the waves roll in or by engaging in another activity that allows us to relax and enjoy the moment. It’s the moments that count so Take Time to enjoy them with this wonderful quilt wrapped around you. – Jen

When I heard the theme of TILES the first thing that came to mind was Moroccan tiles and I envisioned appliqué and embroidery combined. When I finished my image, my Moroccan tile reminded me of a Sundial – meet Modern Sundial!
I wanted to create a tile design that incorporated basic geometric shapes that were also larger than would fit in a 260 mm embroidery hoop – the largest width our DESIGNER RUBY™ 90 uses.
By creating a quarter of the design for one hooping, I could easily sew the four tiles together to create a larger design that could be used as a wall quilt, table topper or cushion cover.
While mySewnet™ PLATINUM Software was used to create the Modern Sundial embroidery, the Draw and Paint module image may also be used as an appliqué pattern for creating the sundial tile.

The The Ceramic Ceramic Mosaic Mosaic Bag Bag
I was so excited to learn that the theme for this issue was ‘tiles’, as instantly, I knew what I would design!
I’m originally from Kyiv and I was inspired by tilework motifs created in 1968 by Ukrainian artists Oleksandr Vorona and Yuriy Ilchenko. All ceramics were created by a third artist Opanas Redko. The techniques used for creating the tiles were maiolica (where flowers and animals are in tinglazed pottery) and ceramic mosaics.
In this project, I tried to use similar colours and shapes to recreate Ukrainian tilework. For the project, I picked fabrics in brown, deep red, orange, yellow, green, and ivory. The ombre colours of these fabrics give a lovely shading and 3-D effect. – Olesya

Moroccan Tiles Tote
I am excited to participate in this tile-themed issue because I immediately had the inspiration for a cool project.
I have fond memories of playing in the schoolyard that had benches and a fountain that had spectacular tile designs. These created for me some of my best memories and the best photos taken there. It was only later in life I learned that those were Moroccan tiles!
As a crochet and knitting designer, I’m happy to design a crocheted tote that honours that memory. I hope you enjoy it!
The clean look of this bag is made by working with the intarsia technique for the front of the bag. Use separate bobbins for each section of colour in a row, carefully twisting yarns to prevent holes. You can access free tutorials to help you with this pattern on my YouTube channel, M.e.knitcrochet.

Tuscan Tiles
Table Runner
It was by serendipity that just around the time ANPTmag announced the theme for this issue, I watched a program about the beautiful, tiles in Tuscany. This design is inspired by actual building roofs, and the bright colours are also Tuscan-inspired. However, please feel free to change the colour palette, as explained here. – Jo

• DMC 6-strand embroidery floss as per colour key
• 4 skeins of 924
• 3 skeins of 321
• 2 skeins each of 927 and 3834
• 1 skein each of 3822 and 3852
Note: These amounts may vary, depending on your stitching tension and colour placement changes.
Notes:
1. There are no partial stitches or backstitching in this design.
2. Use 3 strands of floss (3X) for all cross-stitches, and 2 strands of floss (2X) for all eyelets.
3. Because the pattern is stitched on white fabric, the white stitching shown on the graph was omitted. It is only necessary if you’re stitching on coloured fabric.
Changing the colourway
1. There are only six (6) colours plus white in this design, so it’s simple to select a new palette. It is recommended beginning with the center diamonds. Select new options for the dark colours first, like the red (321) and purple (3834) on this design, then choose contrasting or complementary colours as desired, to form the diamonds.
2. Those two diamonds include all the colours in your new palette. Then select two of those colours for the winding border, red (321) and dark green (924) are used in this sample, so they would show up well.
3. Finally, chose two additional colours from your palette, for the outer V border

In my culture, embroidery is believed to be a spiritual activity, like praying to God. From time immemorial, Belarusan people have used ancient symbols to embellish customary items like a roushnik (towel) and magical powers are associated with these embroideries creating a talisman.
When a baby is born, close relatives prepare a talisman for him/ her, with a special symbol called Khresbiny (the four-pointed rosette) meaning christening. I placed this symbol in the very center of the design. As for my stylized design, I see it in a flower representing joy and best wishes for the newborn life.
This embroidered wall art is perfect for gifting it for a birth, christening, birthday or any other such customs. It can also be gifted as a token of good luck, embroidering it on many household items like a cushion, a towel, a table centerpiece etc. And feel free to use your favourite colours too. – Iryna

Painted Tiles Mat
When I think of the tiles theme, I think of squares of various sizes fitting together to create a pattern. This project has squares of Scottish stitch and pulled thread. Painted Desert was used for the variation of colour. You can use this colour thread or choose your own to fit your own decor.
