Texture is the unspoken language of the needle arts, a silent storyteller that weaves its way through each project, leaving a tactile trail of artistry and creativity. As we dive into the various ways of creating texture in the needle arts, I’m thrilled to guide you through the pages of this issue. Texture isn't confined to the choice of fabrics, thread, and yarn; it extends to the combination of stitches, hand/machine stitches, and fabric manipulation techniques we use to create depth and dimension. What’s more, we discuss how to use unexpected materials to create quilts and sewn projects like plastic mesh, and cork fabric which is smooth to the touch but visually textured! Expanding or reducing the size of a quilting design creates a specific texture to the finished project, and should be considered in the overall effect you want to create. Or as in the case of crochet, Ruth I. Forbes says, “…changing just one stitch or unit or repeat can give the fabric a whole new look.” See her 4 variations in her tutorial Creating Texture with Crochet Stitches.

Read my story of The Selvage Quilt which has been in my creative orbit for years and finally now with the expert collaboration of Paul Léger and Elaine Theriault it has come to fruition. Created with the selvages of some of the most illustrious fibres this quilt is a testament to the possibility of mixed fibres and textures co-existing in the same quilt, how’s that for harmony?! As you navigate this issue, we encourage you to reflect on your relationship with texture in your needlework. How does it influence your creative process? What textures ignite your passion and spark your imagination? We hope this exploration of texture will inspire you to push the boundaries of your craft, to experiment with new textures, and let your creativity soar! Cheerfully,

Inspired

Hi, I’m Jennifer Houlden from Quilts by Jen. I’m a quilt/pattern designer and textile artist. I love to teach workshops and present trunk shows. I have a passion for colour and creating the illusion of movement in a quilt. This table runner is no exception as the wavelike design has lots of movement as it undulates from the top to bottom or side to side depending on how you look at it. Plus, the quilting in the background gives more texture and movement to the design making it feel like it’s a reflection of the rainbow colours.

33 Steps table runner

14

A needle pulling thread

issue 64

I named it 33 Steps for its 33 pieces in the wavy rainbow path and reminds me of all the winding paths I have explored and travelled over the years. Making this table runner explores the fun of using unconventional quilting fabrics as well as trying out different quilting motifs to create texture. This project was made as a table runner but could also be used as a wall quilt and can hang in an either horizontal or vertical orientation. – Jen

Sakura wall quilt

Many years ago, my husband and I took a trip to Japan to visit our son who was teaching English at a school in a small town called Toba. I was in awe of the beautiful landscape and the unique culture of Japan. When I was creating this wall quilt, I wanted to incorporate all the wonderful things I had seen on my trip.

22

A needle pulling thread

issue 64

The first thing that came to my mind was the beautiful cherry blossoms, sakura, that bloom at the start of spring; they symbolize a new beginning. Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is such an iconic landmark that I had to include it. Another reason I included it was that my son climbed up Mount Fuji and

biked down, as a challenge to himself on his birthday. The last element I added was a Geisha girl. Although not many are left in Japan it is part of their culture. I found their costumes to be so ornate, and as a sewer, I loved the fabrics and designs of their garments. – Annette

Sewing with Cork Fabric A new generation of cork fabric can be found at Belagio Enterprises, Inc. and in stores around the world. Cork has been used for thousands of years and there are different weights available for different applications. Our versatile lightweight cork textile is stirring up the quilting, crafting, home décor, and art material worlds.

Variety of cork fabrics from the Belagio Cork Collection

2

Sustainability • Cork is primarily found in Portugal and is derived from the cork oak tree. These precious trees grow successfully in the warm, wet winters and hot, dry summers of the Mediterranean. Before the cork can be harvested, the tree must be at least twenty-five years old. The bark is stripped from the tree much like sheering a sheep. The tree will start to generate new bark immediately. Trees are tagged and not touched again for 9-15 years. It is estimated that every year cork oak forests retain up to 14 million tons of CO2 which allows reduction in the greenhouse effect.

Characteristics • Cork is flexible, impermeable, decay resistant, insulating, recyclable and renewable. It is biodegradable, antistatic and hypoallergenic.

Styles • At Belagio Enterprises, cork fabric is available in forty-two styles and two distinct sizes. Packaged cork is 18” x 15”. It is wrapped around a cardboard tube and displayed vertically in a polybag. Our bolt product is twentyfive inches wide and fifteen yards long.

More choices in the Belagio Cork Collection

62

issue 64

Cork planks are dried naturally in forest piles and then sent to be processed. There it is boiled to make the cork cells expand and easier to work with. No harsh chemicals are used in this process. The cork bark is shaved into very thin sheets like tissue paper. It is then glued to a polycotton fabric like patchwork, in geometric shapes and lines or other designs as desired, by hand. Cork fabric can be dyed and printed. Photo 1 Although naturally waterproof, this fabric cannot be laundered in a washing machine, dryer or dry cleaned. Wipe the cork surface with a damp cloth and allow it to air dry.

Imperfections in cork fabric are expected. Cork itself has lighter and darker streaks and other distinguishable marks. Keep in mind that cork fabrics are hand pieced, cork on trees does not come in finished styles or by the yard. Imperfections are common and should be embraced as characteristics of this truly unique and organic product. I even add the selvage edge to many of my finished handbags and pillows.

Most applicable for the textile, quilting, needlecraft and sewing trades would be the bolted fabric, but don’t overlook the packaged cork. These pieces are great for small projects, collaging, crazy quilting, and embroidery. Smaller pieces allow more variety in the workroom.

Mouse in the Middle A Needle Painting Mouse in the Middle is meant to inspire you to draw and embroider your favourite design elements. But if you wish to embroider this adorable mouse, the materials, instructions, and template are provided. This version was completed using circle outlines and rosettes using Petite Very Velvet, a fuzzy velour-like thread. You may want to draw in foliage around the mouse, instead. Garden encyclopedias or the internet can make an excellent source of leaves or flowers to draw and include. Draw your foliage and mouse, calculate the size you want, and then you’ll know your fabric size and hoop or embroidery frame size. This mouse is two inches small. Calculate the pattern size before cutting your fabric. If you have a better way to embroider something, go for it; there is no “one” way of creating it. – Bunny
