ditor's letter

My dad kept a large bag that included the fun stuff; in it were a Frisbee, a badminton set, paddleball set, a beach ball and a blanket, for the after lunch snooze. Our time at the beach would always start with us laughing at how funny dad looked blowing air into the beach ball as he turned several shades of red. The laughter then moved on to the Frisbee throwing, and the badminton and paddleball matches, no wonder he brought the blanket.

Happiness is a day at the beach The happiness in my heart was greater than the stretch of water, and brighter than the sun. Happiness was playing with dad, and watching mom watching us. On those sun-rich Sundays, life was grand. The gift that is this cherished memory is one that comes alive every time I go to the beach, whether it’s at a lake or the sea. I have my own bag of ‘beach paraphernalia’, and mine includes my knitting bag – heaven forbid I should go anywhere without it, including at the beach. It’s like pulling sheer happiness out of the bag. Speaking of bags, in this issue, there are five bags to make and take along on your vacations, and also stellar ideas for accessories, blankets, quilts, and an exquisite shell and cover up. Enjoy your summer, enjoy the issue.

Cheerfully,

Life goes better with needlework!

As a child, I prayed for hot, sun-rich Sundays, since dad would surely take us to the beach! We kept all beach paraphernalia at the ready so it never took long to get our picnic act together. My senses can recall the smell of grilling meat enveloped with lake water air, the sound of merry children playing in the water, sun rays through swaying branches, the sand in my toes, and somewhere in the distance, the smell of French fries and hot dogs! The French fries were the perfect complement to mom’s picnic menu.

This bright, fun and quick to make quilt is the perfect complement to a day at the beach or a picnic at the park. It’s made using light and dark half square triangles that can be laid out in an endless number of ways. We chose to do a modern, fresh look with chevrons.

summer 2015

In embroidery, couching and laid work are techniques in which yarn or other materials are laid across the surface of the ground fabric and fastened in place with small stitches of the same or a different yarn. The couching threads may be either the same color as the laid threads or a contrasting color. When couching threads contrast with laid threads, patterns may be worked in the couching stitches. - Wikipedia

cushion

his cushion reminds us of waves from the sea or, for some of us, the lake we love. This doesn’t look like regular smocking, rather, it’s a different kind of smocking which falls under the category of fabric manipulation. This is only one design of many that can be stitched and worked from the back of the fabric. Have some fun and see what Summer Waves you can create. Once you’ve stitched this design according to the instructions you may want to explore what happens when you change the grid spacing, therefore creating different effects. z
