I state the obvious when I say this is the red and white issue in honour of Canada's very special birthday. Since A Needle Pulling Thread Magazine is read across North America and in some parts of the world in digital format, needless to say, feel free to change colours. Others will want to make the projects in the same patriotic colours to commemorate Canada's 150 th Birthday. I'm thrilled about the knit and crochet wear in this issue. So perfect for summer and early fall, nothing too complicated but with enough detail to keep your interest. These are knitted and crocheted using light yarns like Red Heart's Soft Touch, Fibra Natura and Flax Lace yarns. How perfect for warm or downright hot weather! There are two features to highlight and both are related to weddings. Janine Zeck's A Prom Dress for Josephine is a feature on how to transform a wedding dress into a prom dress. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to work with what's already available on the wedding dress. The motto is, work with what you have, and change what is easiest to change.
The second feature is by Cynthia MacDougall. You might have seen her yarn review of Universal Yarns' new Flax Lace on KNITmuch published in May 2017. Her review included a swatch knit up in a lace pattern turned into a ring bearer pillow. From that she went on to design a stole perfect for the mother of the bride or bridesmaids. But what's more stunning is the complementing Horseshoe Wedding Stole in this issue which completes the set. There are links to her KNITmuch post if you want to make this full set.
MAKE & BE HAPPY
ditor's letter
Lastly, this red and white issue wouldn't be complete without some redwork and cross stitch projects created with a little humour and keeping in mind our patriotic colours. Enjoy a full year of celebration! Cheerfully,
A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

Big knitting is fast and fashionable! Big.Knit.Love. introduces newbies and experienced knitters to knitting with big needles and bulky, super bulky, and jumbo yarns with 20 patterns for gorgeous wearables. Called one of the most important knitting trends by Lion Brand Yarn, knitting with chunky yarns is less structured than knitting with standard-sized needles and yarns, making it perfect for anyone who wants to make simple yet stylish patterns in no time. In addition, this stunning collection includes a comprehensive, photograph-rich section on tools, materials, and step-by-step techniques, ensuring each pattern knits up perfectly.
Choose from a wide variety of wild and wonderful animal hat designs; there are hats to keep little babies cosy, such as the super-cute rabbit and kitten and hats for toddlers and bigger kids such as the cool penguin, fierce (but sweet) shark, and the cuddly polar bear. Most of the hats can be made in a range of sizes so adults who are young at heart won’t feel left out, and can have their very own tiger, fox, or wolf hat. Each hat has easy-to-follow instructions and uses the simplest of stitches, with clear photographs to help with the all-important snouts, ears, eyes, noses, and whiskers! With essential yarn information as well as a helpful techniques section, you’ll be ready to start crocheting fun animal hats in no time.

Canada Landscape Vest Create mirrored fabric and then use it to cut out a simple vest. I have done this with as little as two fabrics to a maximum of six, always keeping the sky or the top fabric the same. To celebrate Canada’s 150 years, I used red and white with a hint of black leaves, for friends in the States use red, white and blue fabrics. You can get a very elegant look using black and gold and for a quick serger sweatshirt use this technique with fleece and don’t quilt it.
This is a version of Bargello quilting. It's much easier and quicker as you don't need to worry about lining up perfect points. Working with strips of different widths and less colors you will get the look of a city skyline. A great technique for the first time quilter! 14

Prom Dress for Josephine My daughter and I watched the 2015 version of the Cinderella movie. In this version, Cinderella wore the most magical gown. When we saw the gown, we simultaneously said, “We should make a dress for prom!” We considered making the dress from scratch, then decided that recycling a dress might be a better plan. Not only would it save us on materials and time, but it would give new life to one very lucky dress. We looked for a dress that had an adjustable bodice for size flexibility, a wide skirt that could be removed and replaced easily, and a petticoat with large amounts of crinoline to help puff out the skirt. By recycling a used dress we estimated a savings of at least $500 for such a project, plus many hours of labour. We did not plan on finding a wedding dress, but it was love at first sight! It had so much possibility. We found the wedding dress at a thrift store with tags still on. The original value was $1300, but only cost us $200. Janine and daughter Jojo

Double Horseshoe
edding Shawl In Great Britain, and some areas of North America, a horseshoe is considered a symbol of good luck. An ornately decorated, fabric horseshoe is often given to a bride to carry down the aisle at her wedding. This symbol inspired me to create the Double Horseshoe Wedding Shawl. It has double the luck, because not only is it knitted in the shape of a horseshoe, the lace pattern in this piece is called the horseshoe pattern. In addition to ‘doubling the luck,’ I bordered the shawl with ‘rice’ in the form of seed stitch. The challenge for this piece was ‘bending’ the lace into a horseshoe shape. I achieved it by doubling number of stitches on a repeat at intervals around the curve. The yarn? Universal Yarns Flax Lace is sumptuous, inasmuch as linen can be sumptuous. This is the second piece I’ve made with this yarn in three months, and I’m loving it! It’s the perfect thing for summer wedding attire, whether you’re a guest, the mother of the bride or the bride herself!

Victorian Camisole Canada’s 150th birthday calls for something both Victorian and modern, in red and white, of course. Victorian camisoles were undergarments, but modern ones are outerwear. This camisole has some interior shaping to give it a 'close to the body' fit and a slight peplum effect.

Redwork berries have historical roots Redwork is pretty popular right now, and it’s a perfect illustration of everything old being new again. Its roots go pretty far back in the “gentle arts”. As the Victorian ladies in Europe searched high and low to decorate their homes, they adopted Turkey Work from the Americans. Turkey Red was one of the few floss colors of the day that was colorfast and readily available on both sides of the pond. You’ll find photos of museum pieces of red stitched samplers, quilt blocks and kitchen linens. Simply put, red work uses red floss to trace simple line drawings. Way back when, it was possible to find abundant collections of iron-on transfers at the local five and dime. Today, there are several websites where you can find copyright free designs, covering a range of era and styles – many have become copyright free because the companies that produced them have long since ceased to exist. Have quick look around the various vintage embroidery sites on the web and you’ll find some charming designs. In a nod to the embroidery designs of the 40s and 50s, I’ve decided a couple of berries to decorate your kitchen and convey your sentiments at the same time. I love the crisp look of red against readily available tea towelling from my local fabric store. Traditionally, red work embroidery uses just one or two types of stitches for the entire piece, making it a perfect introduction to embroidery for young artisans. In this piece, I’ve used split stitch almost exclusively because I find it easier to be neater, but you can also use stem stitch for the outlines, as well as back stitch. French knots are used for the dots and satin stitch fills in some of the smaller areas. 86
