riginally designed to decorate the fireplace, the Exquisitely Elegant Garland is very versatile. The inspiration came from remembering the paper chains I did as a child and adapting them to home decorating. The stitching can be applied on any type of fabric such as cotton, satin, taffeta, and velvet, which offer different textures. The chain links can also be done using ribbon or embroidered crochet lace.

The garland can be hung from the edge of a fireplace attached with ribbon bows for a scalloped look, or it can just be laid across the top on the mantel. Think about all of the little Christmas lights you can work around it! Place it down the centre of a table as an elegant dÊcor piece and make individual chain links as dinner napkin holders. Other ideas would be to make the chain links thinner and smaller for a chain around the Christmas tree, or individual links as ornaments. The garland can be adapted to any season, and special occasions. Just have fun with it.  z

ave you ever had a cat climb your Christmas tree? You know what chaos can result. Imagine if the ornaments come alive when this happens and they all scramble to save themselves as the tree is being shaken. That is the image that comes to mind with the whimsical elves designed by doll maker Colleen Babcock. Their look of surprise as they appear to grab for branches makes one think the cat has just reached the star at the top of the tree.

was smitten. But, she kept her day job and took classes and practised and, finally, her husband suggested she create dolls full time and teach. “My husband saw my passion when I came home from that first show with my patterns,” Colleen remembers. Now, she teaches doll creation in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. “I really love teaching and it’s so gratifying to have a student be pleased with what they have done in one of my classes. That gives me such a rush!”

“My inspirations usually ‘pop’ into my head,” says Colleen, which is how the Christmas tree elves came to be. When she was asked to create a project for A Needle Pulling Thread, the image of elves falling out of a tree or getting caught in the act of playing on the branches sprang into her head. To make creation of the elves a little easier, she is providing the faces for them that can be traced onto the face fabric or printed on it using an inkjet printer. She understands that drawing faces can intimidate, so she is providing the faces to allow makers to “just have fun”.

Colleen’s international reputation ranks her with some of the most recognized doll creators, such as Patti Culea, Barbara Willis, and Betts Vidal – all have encouraged her in her art. She has had dolls in books by Culea and Willis.

Colleen grew up in Ontario and completed a degree in theatre costuming. She worked in that sector until burnout caused her to escape to England for a break. While in “recovery”, she met her husband and she now lives and creates in London. She says she didn’t really know what she wanted to do until she went to a knitting and stitching show and met some doll makers and

As the elves tumble from the tree, they don’t know what will come next and Colleen says that is a lot like life. “When you are young, you don’t realize there are other ways to use your training,” she says. “So, always keep an open mind.” Which is how a costume designer from Ontario ended up living in London making dolls that are loved around the world.  z

Colleen says what hinders some people from trying doll making is the transition to how things are done differently from clothing construction. “There are many aspects of doll making that differs from other sewing, but it can be fun,” she comments. “Dolls don’t complain about too many fittings or that the shoes are too tight!”

Eliza’s Buttons & Yarn

E

liza's Buttons and Yarns in Barrie, Ontario, has more than its share of glowing reviews in The Needlework Pages*, with tributes to owner Elizabeth Fallone. This is a sure sign that it is worth a visit to her store and her website. *www.TheNeedleworkPages.com

Elizabeth has always loved knitting and she became a knitwear designer when she was home caring for her children. “I was a knitting teacher first and I knit models for some of the Toronto yarn stores,” she explains. “Then, I began designing for Shelridge Farm.” Designing is a “picture process” for Elizabeth as she first likes to imagine where the piece will be worn and who will wear it. Once she has that vision, she can create the design. The shawl she is presenting to A Needle Pulling Thread knitters was inspired by the city of Barrie and the Spirit Catchers, a local tourist attraction. She is a very focussed designer and when a project doesn’t look the same on the needles as it did in her vision, she rips it out and starts over sometimes changing aspects until the “vision” comes clear. “I keep trying until I enjoy what I am doing and then I know it is becoming what I want,” Elizabeth explains. The leap into opening a shop seemed like the next challenge she needed and Eliza’s Buttons and Yarn was born. She likes to use good quality buttons in her work so she stocks fair trade buttons

from India. She also believes in supporting Canadian manufacturers.

As knitters know, sock yarn doesn’t take up much space in a suitcase!

“I carry mostly natural fibres, but I do have some acrylic yarns that are necessary for some projects, such as baby sweaters, that will see a lot of wear and washing,” Elizabeth says. “I carry Canadian yarn from Cabin Fever and Zen Garden as well as stick pins and needle holders made by Canadians.” She also sells knitting bowls that prevent yarn from rolling around on the floor made by a local potter.

Elizabeth has a computer in the shop to give shoppers access to Ravelry. “Offering a pattern service for my customers makes it easier for them to find exactly what they envision,” she comments.

Elizabeth’s association with Zen Garden led to creating a collection of hand-dyed Merino/cashmere/nylon sock yarn with colours inspired by the city of Barrie and is currently available in the shop. The inspiration comes from the colour in photos of local sites. “Our Barrie yarns will give visiting knitters a chance to take home a souvenir of Barrie,” she says.

For those knitters who like the social aspect of the process or for those who need assistance, Elizabeth offers many classes and social knitting opportunities. “My days are busy, but I am enjoying every minute,” she admits. That could be why on her website where she lists her hours, it says the shop is closed on Sunday “to rest our feet.” You can feel Elizabeth’s enthusiasm for her shop – designing, teaching – and you can certainly hear it in her voice. It’s that enthusiasm that prompted people to take the time to review her shop. After all, knitters wouldn’t lie about getting great yarn and service, would they?  z A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

Lined Tea Cozy Construction of tea cozy The tea cozy is worked in two pieces with an integrated lining. For each piece, the lining is knit first, from the tip of the cozy to the base, then a turning ridge is made and the outer shell is knitted back up to the tip using intarsia technique. The sample was made using Colour B for the lining and bargello stripe, and Colour A for the background of the outer shell. The outer shell of the tea cozy is made using the oven mitt chart with the following modifications: 1. The tea cozy has one less stitch than the oven mitt. Hide the column of stitches identified as 1. 2. The chart is worked upside down, from row 60 to row 1. 3. When working Rows 60-50 of the chart, disregard the shaping for the oven mitt top (pink shaded squares). 4. Ignore all references to the thumb gusset shaping (blue symbols). 5. Start shaping the top of the tea cozy at Row 26 of the oven mitt chart (follow directions in the green shaded squares). The pattern calls for K2tog, ssk, and ssp decreases, however, because the decreases will be hidden when the lining is stitched to the outer shell, any decrease may be used. Directions for ssp are given in the oven mitt pattern.

Cynthia made the bargello needlepoint in the photo on the right several decades ago. The Lined Tea Cozy and the Reversible Oven Mitt were inspired by this piece that is still displayed in her livingroom today.

ikipedia tells us that “pom-pon” is originally a French term which refers to ornamental spheres of decorative fluff. They can be made out of fabric, yarn, paper, plastic, or even feathers. However you spell it – here’s a fun and fast crochet project which lends itself to sociable crafting. So why not take a break from your regular sit ‘n’ stitch… and have a Pom Pom Party instead!

This ruffled pom pom can be worked in a little over 30 minutes, and once you get the hang of it, you can chat and snack and stitch away with your fellow pom pom party-ers! Traditional yarn pom poms require some prework: you need to cut doughnut-shaped pieces of cardboard around which the yarn is wound, and then tied and cut. There are fancy commercial pom pom makers available also. With this crocheted version – you only need your crochet hook and yarn!

The ruffled pom pom can be used in place of traditional yarn pom poms. Here are a few suggestions: • Scarf, belt, handbag, and slipper adornments/decorations • Socks – remember those tiny pom poms on the back of sockettes? These provide anchorage to prevent the socks from slipping down into your shoes. • Hat trims (From Wikipedia: “The small pom-pon bauble used on the Tam o’Shanter hat is known as a “toorie”. It evolved into the smaller pom-pom found on older-style golf caps and the button atop baseball caps.”) • Cat toys • Baby’s crib or stroller mobile • Gift wrap embellishments • Holiday ornaments • And of course… the perfect bridal posy for a fibre-loving bride  z

t only looks difficult and daunting, but really blackwork is one of the easiest forms of embroidery. It consists of following a path by the simplest of stitches - back stitch. The double running stitch, a relative of the back stitch, is equally as easy and completes the project so it's reversible.

Originally, blackwork was done in black, or later, in red, due to the limited choice of coloured threads. Today with the vast array of colours why settle for black? Adapt the colour of your finished piece to match your decor or purpose. Let your mind wander as you follow the path with needle and thread.

winter blues Lise Merchant is a certified rug hooking teacher from the Prairie Harvest Rug Hooking School, specializing in the stain glass technique. Winter Blues is not only a tranquil winter scene but

an exercise in transferring the stained glass effect to a hooked rug.

Quite a challenge, but not impossible.

To mimic the effect of stained glass in rug hooking, we have to remember that we want to give the illusion of light, which is created by using spot dyed or mottled wool. That can be created by allowing more muted white wool or light values to show through the dyed wool and by keeping the colours soft. While light to medium values work best for this technique a splash of dark value will add life to the overall panel. z
