Flora

the crazy quilt bear

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo F lora is made of 22 individual pieces. Each pattern piece was traced onto white cotton, and then pieced with a selection of velvet, silk, satin, brocade, even some fabric from recycled ties. In fact, most of the fabric, as well as the lace and appliqués are recycled from thrift store purchases of five fashion styles as well as a few wedding gowns. After piecing

the crazy patchwork, each bear pattern piece was hand basted around the seam line to mark the limits of the embroidery. It took 3½ months of stitching lace onto seams, adding lace appliqués, embroidering, and beading seams. Most of the lace and appliqués are also embroidered and beaded. z

Blossom branches

socks

Spring is such a joyous season and I love seeing trees come back to life; the first buds bursting forth and the dainty blossom petals weighing down the branches. With this in mind I came up with a branching pattern which incorporates tiny bunches of eyelets to give the impression of flowers. The colour is called raspberry but it makes me think of the darker wine-like pink found in the centres of cherry blossom blooms. When choosing shoes I always pick one up and hold it to see how it will look to me when I'm wearing it. So I applied this notion to this sock design. The pattern changes at the ankle so that the branch effect can be seen not only by an admirer but also by the wearer. z

Fan Vaulting Beret A

few years, ago my younger daughter and I took a trip to England for her March break. We both loved the various styles of architecture, but, as a knitter, one of the things I found most inspiring was the wonderful, fan-vaulted ceilings found in many cathedrals. The ceiling at Bath Abbey inspired me to knit the first of a series of berets based on the fanned-out ribs and arches. This is the design for the fourth beret.

The hat starts with a lengthwise band knitted as i-cord. Stitches are then picked up along the band, then increased sharply, to start the twisted rib pattern. Decreases are hidden in the pattern to form the crown of the beret, which ends with the traditional tab. z

HOW OLD WOULD YOU BE?

Joanne Gatenby

model stitcher Pat Nicklow x-stitch@xs-and-ohs.com

A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

spring 2013

“How old would you be?” is not just a rhetorical question. It’s a question that urges us to shed the labels that come with age. We really are as old as we feel or think we are. If we didn’t know our age, how old would we feel?

The Boys primitive hooked rug I

t is well known that rug hooking is a North American art form that began out of necessity. Inspired by something familiar, using old recycled fabrics, beautiful rugs were made to cover cold wood floors.

Michelle Miller

A NEEDLE PULLING THREAD

spring 2013

I love anything primitive, and I also love to upcycle, so the idea to create a rug, using old techniques, and to give new life to old items, was very appealing to me. The pattern was indeed inspired by something familiar. “The boys” as we call them, are two Siamese cats that we share our home with. My closet, unfortunately, was not full of wools that I no longer wear. Many trips were taken to consignment and second hand thrift shops, as well as going through the closets of friends and family members, looking for just the right colour and texture.

About eighty percent of the wools in this rug are recycled from skirts, jackets, pants, and old wool blankets. The rest, mostly the reds and oranges, which were harder to find are mill, or hand dyed. There are over forty different colours and textures of wools in this rug that are used over and over. The colours used in the stars, circles, and heart are used again in the scrappy, hit or miss border. Lastly, several different shades of black are used in the background, to create an antique feel to it. Use the templates provided, or dare to add some of your own designs to create a rug that speaks to you! z

Working on the Railroad by Trish Johnson

I've been working on the railroad All the live-long day. I've been working on the railroad Just to pass the time away. Can't you hear the whistle blowing, Rise up so early in the morn; Can't you hear the captain shouting, “Dinah, blow your horn!”

Bissell Park, Elora, ON, Dorinda Keith, Elora, 24" x 19"

Winter Glow, Verna Bielby, North Bay, 36" x 24"

Another season, captured flawlessly was Winter Glow by Verna Bielby. Winter Glow has such a painterly quality and reminds me of a David B. Milne watercolour. The blush of red sky is an unexpected touch. Sometimes Verna's motivation is just to see how one colour looks next to another. She likes to pick bright colours for their cheerfulness. The incredible thing about Verna's design is that she starts with a blank canvas and doesn't draw an outline; She just starts hooking and changes it as she goes along. Karen Kaiser was the featured artist at the annual. She has her rug ready for The Barn Raising Project of the Simcoe County Museum. Man Maketh, Nature Taketh is about how fast the barns of rural Canada are disappearing. I love the ghost-like plow abandoned in the field and the reverse blueprint in the sky. Shaping the rug like a barn is a difficult task executed well. Jennifer Manuell of Utterson won the Rowan Award for Jumbo which lives up to its name by measuring 93" by 128'. This is a detail shot. Jennifer is fascinated by geometric shapes and colour. She dyes all her own wool with much over-dying of textures. Jumbo just makes you want to reach out and feel all that wooly softness. Snow Leopard is all about the eyes and that majestic pose that all cats (even small pet cats) seem to know. Snow Leopard was hooked by Shirley Barfoot of the Powassan Padulas. Shirley started Snow Leopard with teacher Jon Ciemiewicz at Trent Rug Hooking School. Shirley requested a snow leopard and Jon went to the zoo, shot the photo and put it on the backing for her. Snow Leopard won the prize for fine cut. It is hooked in a number three cut which made it possible for Shirley to capture such detail.

Vivien Thompson hooked Barb and Ozzie as a souvenir of a happy time. The rug is a depiction of Barb Darcy, a much loved rug hooking teacher and Ozzie the Alpaca. Barb met Ozzie at a hook-in in Ajax. Sandra Marshall took the photo. Vivien used eyelash wool for Barb's hair and real Alpaca fleece for Ozzie. Vivien has captured the essence of character, both of Barb and Ozzie. Like talking to Barb Darcy or patting an Alpaca, this rug just gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. z
