New Year, New Resolutions

B-THRIFTY SUPPORTS MARY’S CENTER By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. One of the most effective and highly regarded charities in the Washington, D.C. region recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. Mary’s Center provides health care and other wrap-around services to any individual who enters their doors, regardless of their ability to pay. The Center takes most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and provides a sliding fee scale for self-paid patients to guarantee that their health care needs are met. The communities they serve are composed of citizens born in the United States as well as immigrants from more than 110 countries living throughout the Capital area. Founded in 1988 by Maria Gomez, who is still the President and CEO, Mary’s Center has grown from a small basement clinic that served 200 women a year to a federally qualified health center serving

roughly 40,000 men, women, and children in 2013. Initially, Ms. Gomez, a nurse working with the District of Columbia’s Department of Health, witnessed a large increase in the number of Latin immigrants migrating to the United States to escape war, poverty, and death. Many of the women in this group had been raped or experienced other trauma during their journey north. Once in the U.S., these women often went without prenatal care because they had no place to go. Mary’s Center was founded to help the needs of these vulnerable women. The Center now provides comprehensive services at six locations in DC and Maryland. They also operate mobile units including the Mama and Baby Bus which provides health screenings throughout the DC area, and a pediatric dental unit reaching underserved middle schools in Prince

George’s County. This past October, five B-Thrifty partners celebrated the Center’s 25th Anniversary at the annual Mary’s Center Noche Tropical Gala. Over 600 guests joined together to celebrate and honor the impact that Mary’s Center programs have had in the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals in the past 25 years. There are several ways that individuals or corporations can help support Mary’s Center through donations including, financial contributions, monthly gifts, employee matching-gift programs, giving through United Way or the Combined Federal Campaign, stock donations or in-kind donations. Many of the families served by the Center do not have basic necessities like shoes, clothing, books or toys for children. Further information about Mary’s Center and how to make donations can be found at their website, www.mary’scenter.
