THE IMPORTANCE OF SMALL BUSINESS By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. Small business has long been the stabilizing force in the economy of the United States. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of creativity and production. Since over 60% of all private sector, non-farm jobs comes from small businesses, it is a proven fact that small businesses are critical to the US economy. Many businesses start as one person’s idea. The creator is often an entrepreneur who sees a gap in the market or a commercial opportunity. He or she turns that idea into a marketable product or service. There are four main types of business: manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and service. Characteristics of entrepreneurs who start their own independent business and become successful include: (1) prepared to take risks; (2) driven by achievement; (3)not put off by

failure; (4)self-motivated; (5) determined to stay ahead of the competition. According to the Small Business Association, a small business is defined as any company with fewer than 500 employees. These companies represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms. Since 1995, small businesses have generated 64 percent of new jobs, and paid 44 percent of the total US private payroll, according to the SBA. But then, there are “Micro-Businesses.” These are very small businesses, usually established by one or two individuals and requiring minimum start-up capital and low overhead. B-Thrifty is a strong supporter of micro-business. Under the roof of B-Thrifty in Woodbridge, Virginia, are several retail and service micro-businesses. B-Thrifty

provides space, utilities, and other supportive services to help these businesses get started and continue toward success. Customers who come to the thrift store often become customers of the stores in the “bazaars.” Low-cost advertising in this newspaper also drives additional traffic to the stores. Affordable space is now available at B-Thrifty for new microbusinesses. From 135 square feet to 640 square feet can be arranged to display retail goods or provide a useful service to customers. For a limited time, B-Thrifty is offering the first month’s rent of $1 to an entrepreneur/business owner who would like to open his/her business in one of these locations. To inquire further about opening a micro-business at B-Thrifty, call Margarita Trujillo at (703) 496-5100 / (571) 265-8396.
