Demasiada Basura!
TOO MUCH TRASH!!! Why Recycling Matters By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. It may be reasonable to say that the U.S. is approaching a “trash crisis.” Even though popular concern over the issue of dangerous and wasteful disposal practices has increased in recent years, the problem is far from being solved. Every year the average family throws out 2,460 pounds of paper; 540 pounds of metal; 480 pounds of glass and 480 pounds of food scraps. Each individual in the United States throws away an average of 1,200 pounds of trash each year! About 80% of this trash ends up in the landfills. Of the remaining 20%, about one-half is recycled and one-half is incinerated. In recent years, several public policies have been introduced to ease the burden that our Western lifestyle bears on the environment. However, it is well accepted that nothing has proved to be as effective as recycling. Recycling conserves natural resources. For example, recovered paper currently ac-
counts for about 37 percent of the paper industry’s fiber needs. Without recycling, the material would come from trees. Every ton of newspaper is the equivalent of 12 trees and every ton of office paper is the equivalent of 24 trees. Recycling a ton of paper also saves 7,000 gallons of water. Manufacturing with recycled materials produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin resources. Recycling saves energy. Supplying recycled materials to industry uses less energy than supplying virgin materials that incur extra extraction and transportation cost. Recycling creates jobs. The individual/ family’s investment in recycling pays great dividends in creating private sector jobs. For every job collecting recyclables, there are 26 jobs in processing the materials and manufacturing them into new products. Recycling engenders a sense of community involvement and responsibility. It is also an important way that mainstream
America can express commitment to the environment through minor adjustments to its daily trash disposal habits, shopping choices, and product consumption. Recycling is grounded in a philosophical belief that people throughout the world are interdependent, however isolated they may feel. Teaching children the value of recycling is not just a sentimental gesture; rather, it helps cultivate an important awareness of one’s relationship to others and responsibilities to them. Recycling confirms that people can do what is efficient and still do what is right, though it may mean minor adjustments in the way they collect and throw out garbage or choose to shop for everyday needs. B-Thrifty is all about recycling! Even though we primarily emphasize the importance of recycling of clothes and shoes, we encourage the spirit and activity of recycling of all products. In the words of one of our team members, “It’s not a choice; it’s a responsibility.” (Most of the information for this article came from The Environmental Protection Agency of the U.S.)

¿Cuánto tiempo hasta que se consuma? Cada cosa en el mundo es biodegradable. Con tiempo suficiente, y con el aire y la luz solar y otros elementos, nuestras casas, autos y bienes eventualmente se romperán y desgastarán.
