BACK TO SCHOOL RESOURCE FAIR GETS A+ By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D.
All who participated unanimously gave an A+ grade to the Fairfax County “Free Back to School Resource Fair.” The event was sponsored by the Fairfax County Public School System on August 21 including the “Annandale Pyramid” of about a dozen schools. This was the first such event for FCPS, but the organizers as well as the county school executives all seemed to agree that it should become an annual event. In the gymnasium of Annadale High School, twenty organizations had display tables to offer information for parents regarding services available in the county. Fairfax County provides many free services related to a broad range of needs for children and families. While FFC
continues to be ranked as the second wealthiest county in the nation (second only to Loudoun), it is still the home of numerous families who live close to the poverty line and have pther needs beyond their ability to reach. County leaders, as well as the public school officials, have historically been innovative in their efforts to help with those needs.
While it was impossible to get an accurate count of the number of people attending, estimates have ranged from 3,000 to 5,000 participants. Dr. Karen Garza, new Superintendent for FCPS, praised the event, thanking the organizers several times. Plans are already being made for a similar Fair next August in another area of the county.
B-Thrifty was privileged to have been asked to be one of the corporate sponsors of the event. At the recommendation of the county school social workers, “boutiques” were set up for children and teenagers in two of the temporary trailers on the school property. The children and their parents “shopped” for clothes at the boutiques which were actually made available free of charge.
Alonso Zamora, founding partner at B-Thrifty, said, “We are very anxious to help with a program like this for Prince William County Public Schools. While B-Thrifty is near the border of Fairfax and Prince William Counties, we are actually in PW and feel a greater responsibility to this community. We are open and waiting for such an opportunity.”
