B-Thrifty: The First Mile | Every Journey begins with the first step By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. Every successful endeavor begins within the imagination of a visionary. The recent gold medal winners at the Olympic Games saw in their “mind’s eye” that beautiful medallion being place around his or her neck. When Disney World in Florida was dedicated in 1971, Walt Disney was not present since he had died shortly before the event. Standing next to Mrs. Disney, a prominent political figure said, “It is such a shame that Walt is not here to see this.” Mrs. Disney replied, “Not to worry, he saw all of this years ago.” What can now be seen not in imagination but in reality began as a concept a few years back in the mind of one of the founding partners of B-Thrifty. This partner now presently serves as CEO for the company. The discovery by two partners from Maryland of two other partners in Virginia with adequate space for a Super Thrift Store led to the first step of the BThrifty journey in early 2011. Many steps and missteps have been taken during this first year. While the journey has been exciting and rewarding, it has not always been easy. Lessons have been learned, and some had to be learned again. Relationships have been built and some have been broken. Many needs have been met but the real truth is this: “We have only seen the tip of the ice-

berg” whether in terms of the needs or BThrifty’s ability to help meet those needs. Any organization is only as strong as its top leadership. While the constellation of the original partners has changed and expanded, a team of capable leaders is still in formation. More than just a thrift store, the broader mission of B-Thrifty becomes clearer with each step of the journey. One mile of a marathon represents a small success when the ultimate goal is considered, but it is a success indeed to be affirmed. B-Thrifty proudly celebrates this first marker. The destination of this journey is not just a successful and profitable company. More important than the destination is the experience of enriching the lives of our neighbors, of providing basic needs for those who have very little, of practicing and educating environmental responsibility, of providing jobs for many whose professional skills may be limited, of modeling a philosophy that strongly indicates “when you give, you always get back more!” But neither the partners, the managers, the staff nor the employees can take full credit for the successes at this first mile marker. The B-Thrifty experience has been a joint enterprise including many relationships with other concerned individuals, agencies, and organizations. The first major challenge/opportunity came

very early as a result of a natural disaster. The flooding rains of September, 2011, left 50-plus nearby families homeless. Through the initiative of B-Thrifty, several organizations including Good Will and The Salvation Army joined forces to provide for these families. Not only did these efforts bring food and clothes, but they also brought hope by demonstrating that their neighbors cared. The gestures of “caring for the least of these” caught the attention of both the local English and Spanish television networks as well as the print media. Since those events, the local media have shown interest in several B-Thrifty initiatives. The B-Thrifty family practically “burst their buttons” with pride when the store was featured in a piece aired nationally on The Today Show in March. The Today Show video can still be seen (and we like to show it off) on YouTube as well as our web site. The first edition of this newspaper, originally called B-Thrifty News, was published just a few months after the store opened on August 20, 2011. The editorial perspective of the newspaper is based on the philosophy and teachings of one of America’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, that “thrift is the avenue to wealth.” A completely bi-lingual monthly (each edition is printed in both English and Spanish) the

newspaper provides opportunities to promote local businesses, our church partners, and the many charitable organizations that we support. Articles of interest related to Prince William County Government have been featured in each edition. Not least among the opportunities coming before B-Thrifty is the development of the Recycling Center. Currently in an embryonic stage, the Recycling Center shows strong indication of being a major feature of the B-Thrifty experience. Clearly, B-Thrifty is in a strong position to become a major contributor in recycling textiles and could be a significant asset to local governments and municipalities in their efforts to limit items that wind up in the overcrowded landfills. There are many other notable achievements to be carved on this first mile marker. Again, B-Thrifty makes no assumption that this has been a solo experience. We are grateful for the many friends who have joined us in this walk and the many supporters, especially our customers, who have cheered us on the way. A time of celebration with music, food, games, and prizes is planned for August 31st and September 1st, Labor Day weekend. All of our friends and supporters are invited to join us on these days to celebrate the first mile of the B-Thrifty journey.

Los recientes ganadores de medallas de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos vieron en sus mentes sus hermosas medallas cuando eran colocadas alrededor de sus cuellos, mucho antes que eso sucediera. Cuando Disney World en Florida fue inaugurado en 1971, Walt Disney no estaba presente ya que había muerto poco antes del evento. B-thrifty holds “Clothes for Kids” drive for back-to-school with children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $700 on back-toschool shopping. The “Clothes for Kids” drive runs year-round on Tuesdays for children 8 and under. During back-to-school season, children up to 8-years-old can get free clothing. B-thrifty says the drive wouldn’t be possible without donations.

A Prince William County thrift store is giving local families a big break on their back-to-school shopping bills. Alonso Zamora, part owner of B-thrifty in Woodbridge, sees a lot of families coming through his doors who are barely making ends meet. So he came up with a way to help. On Tuesdays kids can get three outfits free of charge. Customer Christine Smith said, “Most of these are going to be provided free to me, and it’s just amazing.” Smith never imagined she’d take her granddaughter shopping without shrinking her wallet. The “Clothes for Kids” drive is a blessing for her bank account. “My husband is on worker’s compensation. My children are having problems with their finances even though they both have full-time jobs. They’re both running low on money,” Smith said.

Zamora added, “It’s a tough economy right now.” Zamora and his partners opened the store about a year ago and decided he had to do more to help his cash-strapped neighbors. “It’s been because of my background. Being from Chile... I know how difficult things are. We used to get hand-me-downs or second-hand clothing. It’s just natural. We’ve always given back as a community,” Zamora explained. Bthrifty allows its customers of every income to fill their carts with free clothing twice a year. Customer April Greene said, “It does good for me because I have four children, and I’m a single mom...” A big savings, especially during an expensive time of the year. 1. Get on an envelope budget. This is simple, but incredibly effective. Get some blank envelopes and label each one with things you need to buy or pay for monthly. Put you allotted amount of money in each envelope and when the money is gone don’t use anymore until there is money in that envelope again. Don’t borrow from other envelopes unless there is an emergency. You may be amazed at how little you can live on. 2. Use your credit cards very responsibly…better, yet, don’t use them at all. Don’t fall for tempting credit card offers. 3. Use only cash. 4. If you must use a card, use a debit card instead of a credit card. You still have your “plastic” and any benefits that come with the card. This money is deducted from your account so it “acts” more like cash. 5. Get rid of your land line and just use your cell phone as so many are now doing. Many families are pay-
