New Parent Support Program Having a new baby in the house is a
pleasure and a challenge for most parents. But for military families who are separated from extended family, parenthood can pose special concerns. To help parents cope with the challenges, the military has developed the New Parent Support Program (NPSP). The program helps parents—including expecting parents—develop the skills they need to provide a nurturing environment for their children. The program’s services are free to active-duty service members, civilians and their families. Enrollment is available through the Family Advocacy Program. The NPSP is designed to provide information, support, and guidance to expecting families and families with young children. We service parents who are expecting as well as families with children newborn to 3 years old, even if there are older children in the home. Two Questions What if this isn’t my first baby? Often, adding a brother or sister to the family presents a real change in the family. This program answers your questions and helps you develop parenting skills as you adjust to the new changes in your family.
What if I’m not a new parent? Even if you have been parenting for a couple of years, new ages and stages bring different challenges. We can assist you with education, information and resources. Home visits or office visits can be scheduled for your convenience.
Services Offered The New Parent Support Program is staffed by certified nurses and social workers. The program focuses on providing one-on-one support for expecting parents and new parents.
Home Visits
Private, in-home support for new parents is the main focus of the NPSP. As a new parent, you may feel more comfortable asking questions and expressing your concerns about parenthood in the privacy of your own home.
Counseling
Depending on the need, counseling may be available to new parents through the NPSP; if not, referrals can be made to help assist you.
Labor and Delivery Classes
Childbirth preparation classes help parents know what to expect during labor and delivery as well as when the baby comes home from the hospital. Parenting classes are hands-on for the parents of infants and toddlers and focus on a variety of parenting issues, ranging from discipline to feeding. Classes for new fathers are also offered, helping them adjust to life with a new baby and take an active role in parenting.
Play Groups
Structured activities in NPSP play groups help children improve their social and motor skills. The play groups also help new parents get to know one another and develop a support system within the military community.
