Dear Readers A lot has happened since our first issue. Lockdown became the new norm and it's during this time my beautiful daughter, my only child sadly committed suicide, which has caused an unbelievable pain, trying to make sense of it and dealing with the grief hence the delay in producing this issue. The world has changed thanks to coronavirus with so much loss, be it through loss of lives, retrenchments or just uncertainty. Most of us are feeling drained and issues have increased. There is a general feeling of anger and frustration. The past 6 months have been a blur. However, despite living in lockdown, life has carried on – and we cover some of the issues which have arisen during this time. September 10th marked World Suicide Prevention Day and in this issue we take a look at the mental wellness - what it means, signs of anxiety as well as where to find help. We also take a look at the cannabis, hemp and marijuana industry and share some interesting CBD Ecofinds. Loadshedding remains a part of life in South Africa but what are the alternatives when it comes to back-up power? There are also some great reads on wellness, beauty and of course travel. Plus great recipes and gardening ideas. As we head into the last quarter of 2020, let us not forget the lessons learnt during lockdown - how precious life is and how even the simple things in life, like baking banana bread and starting your own vegetable garden can bring immense pleasure. Now is not the time to become complacent and let our guard down - embrace the new masked look and learn to talk with your eyes. Remember that by wearing a mask we protect ourselves and others; social distancing does not mean not being with family and friends it just means that words need to replace hugs and wash those hands. Finally don't forget the 8R's and the important B: Refuse, reduce, refill, recycle, repurpose, rot, repair and find balance in everything.

CANNABIS,
Hempand MARIJUANA
BY ANTHEA CAMPBELL & KERRY-ANN SCRASE
Is it just a fad or does it have genuine health benefits and potential as a real industry? Cannabis, marijuana, hemp or dagga - same plant, different name? Call it what you will, the humble Cannabis sativa/indica has always been surrounded by controversy. More than most plant species, the cannabis plant can be used for medicinal, recreational and cosmetic purposes. It can also be processed to make textiles and other useful materials that are popular amongst the eco-conscious community due to its ability to biodegrade.

Serious advocacy for the legalisation of marijuana started in South Africa in the early 2000s. In February of 2017, largely thanks to the efforts of Dr. Mario Oriani-Ambrosini, the possibility of marijuana for medical and industrial use started being spoken about at high levels. This was shortly followed by the landmark ruling of the Constitutional Court which saw the personal and private consumption of cannabis by adults being legalised in 2018. The public sale and consumption of marijuana is still illegal. Recent changes by the Minister of Health regarding the scheduling of CBD and CBD Oil has helped provide some clarity on how the industry is regulated. Regulations on things such as advertising, labelling, and breeding rights still need further clarification. EcoBalance Lifestyle spent some time with Paul-Michael Keichel, a lawyer specialising in Cannabis Law. EBL: Is marijuana the same as cannabis and hemp? PMK: In both taxonomy and the present laws, yes. However, if we distinguish between the uses of the cannabis plant, hemp is a nonpsychoactive form of cannabis and is used in manufacturing of products such as nutritional oil, cloth and fuel, whilst cannabis proper is largely used for its active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), either medicinally, or recreationally. EBL: Where does cannabis and hemp, come from? Is it one plant broken down for various uses? PMK: Both come from the cannabis plant. It can be bred to be optimal for different uses. EBL: What is the difference between cannabis and hemp in alternative medicines, food and cosmetics? PMK: There is little difference, other than how the cannabis plant is used. In law, processed hemp products that contain less than a minute percentage of the API Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may be freely sold, whereas, where the percentages of certain defined APIs exceed certain thresholds, then one must be licensed to grow, possess and use cannabis. EBL: Are hemp infused products 'milder' than CBD products? PMK: One could have a hemp-infused product that contains very little of either THC or CBD. There are hundreds of APIs (cannabinoids) contained in cannabis. CBD products (including oils) are usually sourced from the plant's flower, whereas hemp oil is pressed from the seeds. EBL: What is the significance of CBD Oil? PMK: Cannabidiol (CBD) is said to have

several therapeutic properties. There are some credible scientific studies to back this up, however the current laws do not allow health claims to be made when selling it. As is often the case with reading and interpreting science as a layperson, one is just as easily able to find a supportive study as one is able to find a contradictory one. EBL: With the change in the laws governing cannabis the number of companies selling CBD products has increased dramatically. There is some concern that this is being done without proper testing and R&D. Are companies obligated to adhere to certain standards and do you need a license to sell products containing CBD? PMK: Under the current legislation, individuals or companies that want to sell CBD products, without a medical license, are only allowed to sell, in the retail sector, CBD products that (i) are complementary medicines (ii) contain no more than 600mg of CBD per sales pack and provide for a maximum daily dose of 20mg and (iii) make a general health enhancement, health maintenance or relief of minor symptoms claim (as opposed to claiming to cure a specific disease or ailment) or CBD products that (i) are processed products made from real cannabis plant material (ii) are intended for ingestion and (iii) contain 0,0075% or less of CBD where only the naturally-occurring quantity of cannabinoids found in the source material are contained in the product. In order to import, export, distribute, wholesale or manufacture CBD products, regardless of whether or not said products meet the requirements set out above, one would need a medical license. Since South Africa presently does not have a recreational cannabis industry, only appropriately licensed pharmacists and medical practitioners
can, on prescription, sell registered cannabis containing medicines i.e. medication with properties that exceed the above-mentioned parameters.

EBL: How easy is it to make CBD oil and do you need to be a chemist to make it? PMK: No, you do not need to be a chemist to make CBD oil. The process of extracting CBD oil can be relatively simple and safe, but only if one has the correct understanding, tools and ingredients. Simply put, the process involves extracting the cannabinoid - containing oils from the cannabis plant and then concentrating these oils. A person who grows their own cannabis in private can do this themselves, so long as they do not intend to sell it, which would be to break the law.
effects and affect the efficacy of other medications.
Private use of cannabis
EBL: Can companies, online shops and retailers make claims regarding the efficacy of a CBD oil without it being tested or verified? PMK: No, retailers of CBD oil cannot make claims without, at the very least, testing the amount of THC and CBD in their product(s). In addition, retailers must ensure that the CBD products have an accepted low risk claim or health claim which only refers to general health enhancement (without reference to specific disease), health maintenance and relief of minor symptoms (not related to a disease or disorder).
EBL: What are the legalities with regards to growing your own cannabis? Can you grow cannabis in a suburban garden? PMK: Note that under the judgement by the Constitutional Court in 2018, adults may, for their personal consumption, use, possess and cultivate cannabis in private.
EBL: What should consumers look out for when purchasing these products? PMK: Purchasers of CBD products should steer clear of unestablished businesses that have not taken the appropriate steps to test their products and ensure their safety. Purchasers, as a safeguard, should consult their medical practitioner for use and dosage, as CBD (some might suggest) can have side
EBL: What are the laws and how can you safeguard yourself from breaking the law as it currently stands? PMK: As the law currently stands, cannabis may only be used by an adult for his / her personal consumption. Readers should exercise extreme caution at least until the understanding/s of the police, prosecutors and courts are established.
“In light of President Ramaphosa’s confirmation as to government’s plans regarding cannabis, we can expect legislative reform in the coming months / years says Paul-Michael Keichel”.

CBD AND CBD OIL? BY KERRY-ANN SCRASE
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most common active ingredient of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant. It may be supplied as CBD oil containing only CBD as the active ingredient (not including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or terpenes), a full-plant CBD -dominant hemp extract oil, capsules, dried cannabis, or as a prescription liquid solution. CBD does not have the same psychoactivity as THC - in other words it does not cause a ‘high’. What are the benefits of CBD Oils etc? The following are health benefits of CBD oil, which are backed by some scientific evidence: Can Relieve Pain Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation associated with diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Could Reduce Anxiety and Depression CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for both depression and anxiety. Can Alleviate Cancer -Related Symptoms CBD may help reduce symptoms related to cancer and side effects related to cancer treatment, like nausea, vomiting and pain.

Could Benefit Heart Health Recent research has shown that CBD may be beneficial for the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressur. May Reduce Acne Recent scientific studies show that CBD oil may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production.

HempLove BUILT OUT OF PASSION
BY ANTHEA CAMPBELL
HempLove is a sustainable clothing and cruelty free skincare company. It was founded by friends Loré Botha and Lara Blevi and is very much a product of a unique sisterhood which is based on honesty, transparency and a shared passion for nature and the environment. They remain as committed to these three guiding principles today as they were when they first started. The pair grew up travelling through Africa and therefore have a desire to make a difference to the continent. Furthermore, as a company started by females, HempLove is passionate about promoting and improving the skills sets of women in Africa and as well as bringing sustainable fashion to international platforms where it can be recognised. “We are a part of the sustainable movement in Africa and we aim to lead by example and set standards for other like minded individuals to join the sustainable revolution. Sustainability is not our only point of difference; we aim to challenge and drive a change in the textile and cosmetic industries in Africa by creating awareness and promoting a conscious living as the desired lifestyle,” explain this dynamic duo. The issue of sustainability is all encompassing and much deeper than most people realise. Sustainability is not about marketing or a new social status to put on your Instagram bio. It is a lifestyle, that requires constant effort and improvement. From the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the skincare products you use to the décor used in your home. It lies in every choice you make.

‘
The beauty in living a conscious life, is that you start playing a role in society. That is to change people’s perceptions and to create awareness about how to live more sustainably and be more aware.
’ It means living a life with meaning, seeing the small things that are overlooked in today's fast paced lifestyles. The brand has also been built on a foundation of transparency - from sourcing of raw materials, to design and manufacture, environmental footprint and community involvement.
