Civil War Collector The
By John Sexton
We found a flag hidden in the rafters of our old garage in Midway, Ga. Wrapped inside the flag was a piece of paper which simply said Ft. McCallister Battle. There was also a bullet inside the flag. The flag appears to have a bullet hole in it and dried blood. There is also a doctor’s
signature on the flag itself. The name appears to be Dr. W. R. Dandy. We have had a couple of antique dealers look at it, and they feel it is authentic. Would you please take a look at the pictures and see if you could give us an idea if it is indeed authentic and if so what an estimate would be if its value. Thank you for your time. JS: Your flag is a 20th century copy of an Army of Tennessee battle flag. I'm not sure of the history or the name inked on the hoist, but it is possibly from a reenactment or a living history event. Fort McAllister is a beautifully preserved earthwork Confederate fortification, now a state park near Savannah, Ga. Similar flags of machine-sewn cotton with some age like this one can be found priced around $100-$200.

A modern reproduction of an Army of Tennessee battle flag, $100-$200.
A bayonet for a British Enfield musket dating to the Civil War Era, $75-$125.
John, about 50 years ago, I bought a socket bayonet in an antique shop. Its overall length is 25 inches, the blade portion being about 21.5 inches. It appears to have originally been coated with a bronze or copper-color gilt. The markings are difficult to read, but I believe there is a crown stamped twice on the bayonet, which makes me think it is not American made. Also, there appears to be the numbers 51 and 37 stamped on the piece as well as the letters ND or perhaps WD, BR, and 80 or 89. As I recall, it is supposed to be a Civil War bayonet. JS: Your bayonet is Civil War Era, but it is for a British Enfield rifled musket. The capital initials "WD" with the broad arrow (which looks like an inverted "V") denote British military acceptance. The other various markings are various British proofs and rack numbers and of little little significance in value. These bayonets are quite common to the market, and an average brown in very good condition can be found priced at various trade shows for about $75-125.
Would like to know the value of these. They were my great grandfather’s that I found in a photo album. JS: These two broadsides are quite impressive when you first see them; however, the verbiage is not typical of the era. I know of no original examples, and these appear to

The Shops of Nashville, TN Nashville, Tennessee was founded in 1779 by a group of Overmountain Men and named after the American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, but today everybody knows it as Music City, with its legendary country music venues like the Grand Ole Opry House, The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and the historic Ryman Auditorium. The nice thing about Nashville is that it's a major city (the
4th largest in the Southeast and the 2nd largest in Tennessee, after Memphis), but it's small enough that you don't get that big-city, overwhelmed feeling. A lot of the action is in The District, downtown. And that's good news for people who want to have fun in Nashville and enjoy its legendary honky-tonks, dive bars and dance halls, while being mindful that it's also a great place to
shop for antiques. GasLamp Antiques (and GasLamp Too) is one of the South's biggest and best places to find fine antiques and furnishings, artisan, industrial, mid-century, vintage, modern and more, all in more than an acre of climate-controlled space. The aptlynamed Music City Treasure Chest is a large indoor flea market with over 6,000 square feet of antiques, collectibles, furniture, home décor, art and more.

me to be fantasy pieces made maybe about the time of the Centennial. Broadsides of the Civil War Era were made on a very thin newsprint-type paper. These appear to be made of the vellum-like material often seen in reproduction broadside posters from the 1950s-1970s. I do see facsimile broadsides sold at trade shows as decorations, framed and priced for $50-$100 typically. Original broadsides from the Civil War are quite valuable and quite varied as to content and size. You can search the archives of auction houses such as James D Julia Americana sales or Heritage Auction Galleries for original examples that have sold over the past few years.

John, I purchased what was advertised to be a Civil War presentation sword to Henry Bingham who won the Medal of Honor in the Battle of the Wilderness. I bought it at what should have been a higher price than I should have paid. It got me thinking it is not authentic. I have a four-day window to return the sword if it’s not authentic. JS: You are lucky you bought this from a reputable auction with guarantee of authenticity. Not only is the inscription not correct, the entire sword is not authentic. It is a wellmade facsimile, made most likely in the last 20-25 years. There have been a couple of articles written about these clever copies made 20 years ago or so. I recall a very good article written by sword collector Don Ball and
I believe published in NorthSouth Trader Civil War Collectors magazine when these facsimiles first turned up. I am not sure if they are still being made (Spain or India), but I often see them in antique venues and even in some large collections and museums! Inscriptions are usually to KIA (killed in action) heroes or winners of MOH.
Be cautious of fake presentation swords like this one, often inscribed to Civil War heroes. Just For Openers from 1892 to the Present A short history of bottle openers By John Stanley
Who would have thought after William Painter invented the crown cap opener in 1892 that almost 125 years later thousands of different bottle openers would be patented for use in opening bottles? Every shape and size has been developed for use in a process that almost everyone takes for granted. Only when a person most needs a bottle opener do they appreciate the importance of this invention. After Painter’s 1892 invention, crown caps became a staple for enclosing

the contents of a bottle. By the time of National Prohibition in 1920, the U. S. had thousands of breweries big and small across the country. Many of these businesses had a bottle opener manufactured with their brewing or brand name on it to be given away in bars, saloons, fairs or whatever functions where groups of people met. Early bottle openers were mainly in three groups, consisting of flat figural, key-shaped and cast iron. There were also many different novelty-type openers outside of these three groups. In addition, since the 1870s many drink establishments sealed their bottles with corks. A wide range of different corkscrews could also be found to uncork bottles. Many southern breweries had gone out of business by 1920 as the South passed laws to prohibit the sale of alcohol in their states, such as Tennessee in 1909. However, opener manufacturers
of the period did not have to worry as soda was just as popular as beer across the country. Led by Coca-Cola, PepsiCola and Dr. Pepper had bottling plants nationwide, and the bottled soda they produced required an opener of some form. When Prohibition ended in 1933, openers for all kinds of beverages were needed in mass quantities. By this time, opener styles were concentrated in three styles: flat figural, key-shaped and now wire openers. Wire openers were the cheapest and easiest to produce. In 1935, Krueger beer became the first canned beverage. This type of container required a triangular punch be made in the top of the container. The first can piercer was a thick steel opener and was made by Vaughan of Chicago and the American Can Company (Canco). The onset of World War II saw major cutbacks in items produced with steel. Many openers that were made up until this time ended up in war drive scrap steel piles. Once WWII ended, opener production again picked up steam with the main types produced being wire openers and can piercers. The 1950s

by Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $5,101 (19 bids, 13 bidders): Antique Folding Mining/Miner’s Candle Holder Lamp, AETNA POWDER CO. This is a wonderful, nickel-plated original, antique, folding miner’s/mining candleholder/ lamp, made by Aetna Powder Company, Chicago, Ill. It measures approximately 6.25 inches when fully opened up. It is nice and tight, opening and closing easily. (Photo, courtesy of eBay seller heiercls.)

DBA: These devices were used from about 1860 until the early part of the 20th century and attached to the miner’s cap. Mining equipment has always had a strong collector’s market. This candleholder is especially nice. While it is possible to find miner’s candleholders for amounts in the low $100’s, the ones I found are not comparable to this example. When an object is a much better example than other objects in the same category, it is difficult to say whether it is a good deal for the seller or buyer, as the objects are not comparable. $4,186 (43 bids, 8 bidders): Antique Four B BBBB Crushed Plug Pocket Tobacco Tin – Burlington, IA. Old antique pocket type tobacco tin, Four B’s BBBB Crushed Plug from Burlington Iowa. Not in perfect condition but not bad either. (Photo: eBay seller oldrivermiss.)

DBA: John Blaul had a wholesale grocery store in Burlington, Iowa, that was well known. His products all had very attractive tins and/or labeling, and many have been copied. You will find these for sale in new condition. While this one is obviously an antique one, these can be found for a few dollars. Buyer beware. I did find another John Blaul tobacco canister which sold for $1,700 at auction. Although other John Blaul products could be found, few tobacco products were available. That brings another collectible object at issue. Tobacco objects are a different category than just advertising tins, meaning that tobacco objects are in a different league than regular advertising tins. The previously mentioned $1,700 tobacco advertising tin is quite an amount off from the $4,186 paid for this object. I think that 225 North 17-92 the seller got a good deal in this situation. Rare historical, antique, (circa 1850) Cairns Brothers High Eagle Helmet with engraved brass front piece and fox finial. The helmet has an 8-sided green paper label inside the crown, which reads, “Cairns & Brother, successors to H. T. is showing for about 1 to 1 ¼ inches; there is a crack or tear on the right side brim (facing) of the helmet, and there is also some cracking in the right side of the beaver tail. (Photo: eBay seller: nfr-c12.) DBA: It would be hard to say if this was more collectible because it was a Cairns helmet or because of the history with the location. It could fall into multiple collector categories. Cairns helmets are still being produced today, and these new fire helmets sell for around $800 each. Historic ones with ties to local fire departments would obviously be more valuable. While this seems like a high price for a fireman’s helmet, this one is older with history with the beginnings of the Cairn Company and has some additional provenance with the location. The buyer got a good deal.
as a heat source. If you search online, you can find examples of these full-sized 1930s stoves for sale, but you will not find another example of the salesmen sample that we are selling tonight! DBA: Saleman’s samples have a strong collector base, and this example is operational/functional, making it even more unusual and valuable. This amount is really the “going rate” for a salesman sample of this caliber. The issue is whether one can find similar objects selling in other markets for a similar price, meaning if one needed to sell the object, would it successfully sell? While it is much more difficult (or impossible) to predict future sales values, it is easy to check if this price is a fluke or the “regular price.” -----------------

As a minister, Francis was a socialist Christian, and he believed that all public services and education should be nationalized, run by the government and provided to all. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, socialism came to be seen as a panacea for inequality. Bellamy’s share-the-wealth teachings over the pulpit eventually resulted in him being removed from his position. was fought to prove. To make that One Nation idea clear, we must specify that it is indivisible, as Webster and Lincoln used to repeat in their great speeches. And its future? Just here arose the temptation of the historic slogan of the French Revolution which meant so much to Jefferson and his friends, 'Liberty, equality, fraternity'. No, that would be too fanciful, too many thousands of years off in realization. But we as a nation do stand square on the doctrine of liberty and justice for all..."2 Placing the hand over the heart during the Pledge of Allegiance has an interesting history. James B. security camera video of a possible dry run by one of the thieves had been found. The video can be seen on YouTube, as can the back of the thief’s head. Much speculation has been made about why these particular artworks were stolen and where they may be, and much of it has been disproven. Was it an inside job with the help of one of the guards? None have been formally charged. Was it the work of organized crime? Some think so, but nothing definitive has been revealed to the public. Other questions are still unanswered. Why steal those paintings and art when they are too well known to be sold on the open market? Was there a shopping list for a private, unscrupulous buyer? Whether or not these were taken for private collections, it appears specific items were targeted because the most valuable painting in the museum was not taken, The Rape of Europa by Titian. No one has ever been charged with this crime. The museum continues to offer a $5million reward for information leading to
the recovery of the art in good condition. That reward would just be for starters— the person who actually knows who stole the art, why, and where it is now would make multi-millions for the book and movie rights. A virtual tour of the rooms where the art was stolen can be seen at GardnerMuseum.org. Four empty frames hang in the Dutch Room of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in hopes that The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, The Concert (the most valuable painting stolen worth $200,0001), Landscape with an Obelisk, and A Lady and Gentleman in Black will be returned one day. Who was Isabella Stewart Gardner? She was an art-appreciating and collecting, philanthropic, outrageous, wealthy, museum-creating, consummate Boston Red Sox fan who was actually profiled in the book, Fenway Park: A salute to the coolest, cruelest, longestrunning baseball park in America, by John Powers and Ron Driscoll. Born in 1840, married in 1860 to
John Lowell "Jack" Gardner, she had a son in 1863 who died before his second birthday. Her husband’s wealth from his shipping and railroad businesses (his father became wealthy shipping pepper from Sumatra) allowed them to attempt to escape their sorrows by collecting art the world over, which eventually resulted in the creation of the museum. In Fenway Park, Isabella is honored with this: “As the [Boston]Globe’s Jack Thomas wrote in 1988: ‘There was only one Isabella Stewart Gardner, which is too bad, for nobody was better at shocking Boston society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries…. She demonstrated contempt for propriety by walking down Beacon Street with pet lions, and posed in a low-cut dress with pearls around her hips for a John Singer Sargent portrait considered so risque that when it was displayed at the St. Botolph Club in the winter of 1888, Jack ordered it taken down, and it was never again shown in his lifetime.” “Mrs. Jack, as she was known, once caused a huge commotion at Symphony

Hall. In December of 1912, two months after the Red Sox beat the New York Giants in the World Series, she appeared at a concert wearing ‘a white band around her head and on it the words, ‘Oh you Red Sox’ in red letters,’ as a Boston gossip columnist put it. ‘It looked as if the woman had gone crazy…almost causing a panic….’” “‘Oh you Red Sox’ was a popular song with the Royal Roosters, a group of Boston baseball fans known for rowdyism,” Patrick McMahon, a Museum of Fine Arts curatorial project manager told the Boston Globe in 2005. ‘Symphony goers must have thought for a moment that one of those raucous drunks had slipped into the building.’”2 Isabella Stewart Gardner passed away on July 17, 1924—a long time before the robbery of her art. Good thing for the thieves; she would have tracked them down a long time ago with the help of the starting lineup of the Boston Red Sox. Those correctly identifying the painting were: Rachel Ohtani, Ginny Richard and Sherry Blanton of Old School Antique Mall in Sylva, N.C., and

Twilight of the Empire. The exhibition concludes with works from the early 19th century, when the fall of the Holy Roman Empire gave rise to the hereditary Austrian Empire—a transition from the ancien régime to a modern state in which merit determined distinction and advancement. Franz Joseph, who reigned longer than any previous Habsburg, saw the growth of nationalism and ruled over a dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. As heir to the Habsburg legacy—and in the spirit of public education and enrichment—he founded the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1891. Tableau: Uniforms and women’s gowns from the court of Franz Joseph, including: the campaign uniform of Franz Joseph (1907); a velvet dress made for Empress Elisabeth (c. 1860/65); an evening gown made for Princess Kinsky (c. 1905); the ceremonial dress of Crown Prince Otto for the Hungarian Coronation (1916). A Brief History of the Habsburgs. The noble House of Habsburg rose to prominence in the late Middle Ages through strategic marriages, political alliances and conquest. In 1273, count Rudolph IV gained control of Germany as King of the Romans, and Habsburg domains continued to grow leading up to Pope Nicholas V’s coronation of Frederick III as Holy Roman Emperor in 1452. Under Frederick’s son Maximilian I and his successor Charles V, the Habsburgs achieved worldpower status, assuming the title of emperor without papal

Nut Carving
Several kinds of fruit and nut pits, including peach, apricot and here, an olive pit, have been carved since at least 500 B.C. Examples exist from 1,000 years ago. Carved in the 19th c., this boat measures 1 3/4 x 3/4 inches, has 26 people on it and shutters, one of which that opens and closes. A poem about sailing the boat at “the Red Cliffs” is written in Chinese on the bottom. (Photo: Adilnor Collection, Sweden.)

Masterpieces from the Austrian Habsburg Dynasty Continued from Center Gloss consent and enfolding Spain and Burgundy into the Habsburg-controlled territories. The dynasty split into Spanish and Austrian branches shortly thereafter, and in the 17th and 18th centuries the male lines died out, resulting in the loss of Spain. In 1740, Maria Theresa—the sole female Habsburg ruler, who reigned for 40 years—seized control of the Austrian line to become the final ruler of the House of Habsburg. The early 19th century witnessed the final demise of the Holy Roman Empire and the establishment of the main Habsburg line’s successors: the House of HabsburgLorraine. A hundred years later in 1916, Emperor Charles I inherited a dual AustroHungarian monarchy upon the death of longtime Emperor Franz Joseph. More than 600
years of Habsburg sovereignty came to an end in 1918 with the close of WWI. “Habsburg Splendor,” largely composed of works that have never traveled outside of Austria, was co-organized by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the High Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the foremost museums
in the world with rich holdings comprising artworks from seven millennia, from Ancient Egypt to the late 18th century, including important collections of Renaissance and Baroque art. -----------All photos, courtesy of Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria.

All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.
Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.
There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.
Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net

Name This Famous Person Continued from Page 17 eye and the elbow extended. Then, at the words “to my Flag,” the hand, palm down, was move gracefully forward and pointed toward the flag. This was used until 1942 when it was changed to the hand over the heart to avoid appearing to be a Nazi salute. During WWII, the Nazis and Fascists began using the extendedhand salute of allegiance that has been attributed to the ancient Romans. I say “attributed” because there has not been found clear evidence of this salute being created or used by the Romans; however, similarities exist in sculpture and on coins. The Roman salute of the extended hand with fingers together is thought to have perhaps been created by the artist Jacques-Louis David in his 1784 painting The Oath of Horatii in which the salute is depicted. Bellamy went on to work at several magazines, including the Ladies Home Journal for a while, and ad agencies. He retired to Florida in 1922, where he continued to work in advertising.3 Francis Bellamy died on August 28, 1931 in Tampa, Fla., and he is buried in Rome, N.Y. Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., the premier entertainment auction house, is proud to announce the Dec.3rd. 4th and 5th auction of property from the collection of former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his wife, the actress Barbara Bach. The collection, curated by the couple, features items from their London estate and Beverly Hills and Monaco residences. The couple met in 1980 on the set of the movie Caveman. Ms. Bach had already made a name for herself as a beautiful actress and former Bond girl. They married in 1981 and have enjoyed an enduring love since. The collection consists of musical instruments (including drums and guitars), career memorabilia from the Beatles’ era and Ringo’s solo career, including his All-Starr Band, fine antiques, custom-made eclectic furnishings, fine art and personal items. The auction also has the most important drum kit to ever hit the auction block and one of seven of Starr’s personal drum kits: the iconic musician’s first 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl three-piece drum kit. The kit was used by Starr in 200+ performances between May of 1963 and February of 1964 and was used to record some of The Beatles’ biggest hits including: “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “She Loves You,” “All My Loving,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Money,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” and others. Paul McCartney also used the Oyster Black Pearl kit on his first solo album, McCartney. This specific drum kit has not been seen in public for more than 50 years (est. $300,000-$500,000). Ringo Starr’s other spectacular kits offered for sale each carry unprecedented provenance of the Beatles and Ringo Starr’s solo career. They include: *A custom-built Jumbo Silver Sparkle kit that was used in The Beatles “Hello Goodbye” promotional video filmed in November 1967 (est. $100,000-$200,000). *A kit commissioned for Starr by George Harrison. In 1968, Harrison traveled to Los Angles to produce an album. While there, he worked with drummer Hal Blaine who used a unique “Monster Drum Set.” Harrison was inspired to get one for Starr (est. $10,000-$20,000). *In 2002, Starr performed on a Ludwig four-piece kit in gold sparkle with a hammered bronze snare at the George Harrison memorial concert, Concert for George. Starr played that night with “George’s Band” alongside Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Dhani Harrison and other musicians (est. $30,000-$50,000). *A unique set of Ludwig clear Vistalite drums with interior lights used by Starr in his 1978 television movie Ringo (est. $30,000-$50,000). *The 1989 inaugural tour of Ringo Starr and his All-Starr band toured three countries in five months. Starr played a Ludwig silver sparkle while performing with Clarence Clemmons, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Dr. John, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, and Joe Walsh. Starr continues to tour with a line-up of AllStarrs (est. $50,000-$70,000). For more information, visit www. juliensauctions.com.

Metrolina October Show One Soggy Event, But Drier for November Extravaganza “Confetti from Heaven” is how the website described the conditions at the October Metrolina Antique Market in Charlotte, N.C. But folks weren’t fooled–they knew it was really rain. Add to that a governor with dire warnings against leaving the house and the inevitable occurred–a group of sad dealers and office workers. Things did pick up on Saturday and Sunday, though. “My best show ever,” is how Patricia Carter, a Metrolina dealer for more than 40 years, described her show. “I sold my very best items. I was so excited,” she said. The show was also happy to welcome back Pauline Powell, who is still recovering from back surgery. “Not such a good show for me,” said Pauline, “but I can’t wait for the Extravaganza. The 2015 November Extravaganza at the Metrolina Antique Market will feature a food truck rally, which was tested for the first time in October. This new style of eating offers everything from goulash to gourmet. At the show,
dealers were overheard discussing vigorously the merits of Sophie's Soul Food Truck versus Mae’s Creole Kitchen or Comfort Food on Wheels. “All things old are new again, “said Joy Shivar, show manager. “We continue to mix traditions from the past with new and fun ideas that will make Metrolina a destination for young and old.” A beer garden is in the works and November will feature a full cash bar with seasonal offerings. Many venues are full for the November show. “We still have space in the malls, the tents and outdoors but our buildings are at capacity,” said Shivar, who advises dealers to lock down their spots as soon as possible for what is being billed as “the largest show in the Southeast.” For more information on booking the Extravaganza in November or the December show which will emphasize unique gifts, visit MetrolinaAntiqueMarket.com or call 704-714-7909.

Important Firearms Auction | March 2016
The Julia Auction Company does not sell the greater number of firearms in a year, however they do sell the greater number of high end, expensive and rare firearms in a year. The March 2016 Firearms auction is shaping up to be an extraordinary sale which will feature a superb private collection of Colts, great collection of antique and military collectable firearms, rare Class III, superb sporting arms, great Winchesters, and much more. Our October 2015 auction was another extraordinary success at
$15 Million
The Julia Auction Company regularly and consistently offers and sells more high end, expensive firearms than any other auction house on the planet Earth. This sale generated 464 lots which sold in excess of $10,000; 176 sold in excess of $20,000; 36 lots which sold in excess of $50,000; and 9 lots which sold in excess of $100,000. In addition the Julia Company also handles more high end, iconic collections than any other auction house in the world. This last sale boasted over 17 private collections and estates of rare firearms. This very action itself confirms that the major collectors in the firearms collecting fraternity recognize the prowess of the Julia Auction Firm and regularly select Julia’s to handle their important collections. If you have one item or an entire collection that you are contemplating selling, please give us a call to learn how we could best maximize your return.
