Do You Know Bullwinkle’s Namesake?
An ad forAntiques.8th.H..12.08_SEA.indd Clarence Bullwinkel's car dealership. Timeless
Jay Ward and Alex Anderson created the dimwitted but always upbeat Bullwinkle J. Moose featured in their 1959-1964 cartoon series, Rocky and Bullwinkle, which later became The Bullwinkle Show. Co-producer Bill Scott was the voice of Bullwinkle until his passing in 1985. Bullwinkle’s namesake was Clarence Bullwinkel, the owner of a Ford dealership in Oakland, Calif., a respectable member of the community. He and Jay Ward were members of the local Rotary Club, and Jay received permission from Clarence to use his last name, reversing the last two letters so as to not “…upset the family.”1 Some facts about the good-hearted moose: *He lived in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. *He could remember everything he ever ate. *He and Rocky’s alma mater was Wossamotta U (What’s the matter with you?), which happens to have a Facebook page today where you can hear its fight song played by a complete orchestra backed up with accordions. *He had a difficult time pulling a rabbit out of his hat, usually bringing out a tiger, rhino or Rocky. Collectors still have a place in their hearts for Bullwinkle. A 1988 Rocky and Bullwinkle cel sold for $185 on eBay in November of 2014. A 5.5-inch tall ceramic Bullwinkle figure from 1993, one part of an 11-piece set, sold for $61, and a mintin-the-box Fossil Limited Edition Bullwinkle wristwatch sold for $50 on eBay in January 2015. ----------------1 Tralfaz.blogspot.com

T he Biggest Fakes by Mike McLeod
No surprise that nine of the top ten celebrity autographs most often faked in 2014 according to PSA/DNA Authentication Services (PSAcard.com) were: 1. The Beatles 2. Elvis Presley 3. Neil Armstrong 4. John F Kennedy 5. Michael Jackson 6. Marilyn Monroe 7. Jim Morrison 8. Jimi Hendrix 9. The Rolling Stones However, No. 10 on the list was a surprise—signatures of the cast of The Walking Andrew Lincoln plays Dead. Again, and to the utter “Rick Grimes,” the most surprise of many, the fans of popular cast member on The Walking Dead. Lincoln’s the zombie show have cracked another list. Undoubtedly, the birth name was Andrew show will achieve even more James Clutterbuck. lists including these for 2014: (Photo: Gage Skidmore.) *Variety, which calls the show a “splatterfest,” reported that The Walking Dead was the second most pirated show worldwide (47.6 illegal downloads), behind Game of Thrones in the No. 1 spot (48.4 illegal downloads).1 *The Washington Post rated it No. 4 in the top ten shows of 2014 behind: 1) The Americans, 2) Fargo and 3) the Game of Thrones. 2 *Diamond Comic Distributors listed The Walking Dead comic book issue #132 as second best seller for 2014 behind Spiderman #1.3 The show has also won a slew (pardon the pun) of award nominations and awards during its five seasons thus far, including two Primetime Emmy Awards for prosthetic make-up. So why not make the fake signature list? PSA/DNA says a castsigned photo sells for $500 and a cast member-signed photo is worth between $50 and $250, depending on the character. While on the topic of newbies to the list, the top sports autographs most often faked in 2014 also had a newcomer— Mike Trout, an outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels. He’s so popular, he beat out Derek Jeter for the No. 6 spot. PSA/DNA reported that a signed bat used in 2013 by Mike Trout sold for $9,480 in 2014. An authentic signed photo is valued at $75, and a ball signed by Mike Trout goes for $150. He was the American League’s 2013 Rookie of the Year. ----------- 1 Variety, “Top 10 Pirated TV Shows of 2014: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Walking Dead’ Lead List,” Todd Spangler, Jan. 2, 2015. 2 The Washington Post, “The best TV of 2014: ‘Americans,’ ‘Fargo,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Walking Dead’ and more,” by Hank Steuver, Nov. 25, 2014. 3 PasteMagazine.com, “2014’s Best-selling Comic Books and Graphic Novels Revealed,” by Jennifer Champagne, Jan. 9, 2015.

René Dagron
Memories Flea Antique Stanhope binoculars. (Photo: eBay seller Melsposhjunk.)
These notable and at least somewhat famous items are Stanhopes or Stanhope Viewers, which are used to see microphotographs. We have all looked into some version of these mini-viewing devices during our lives and seen some faraway place, national monument or point of interest. Few realize they were invented in the mid-1800s. The invention of the Stanhope Viewer is credited to Rene Dagron (Mar. 17, 1819June 13, 1900) while living in Paris. You notice that his invention does not bear his name. Stanhopes are so called because Dagron implemented part of a microscope lens system invented by Charles Stanhope, the 3rd Earl of Stanhope (Aug. 3, 1753-Dec. 15, 1816). Stanhope created a miniature microscope which was basically a short tube with convex lenses on either ends, one more convex than the other. Stanhope was a scientist, and his invention was a carry-in-your-pocket-all-thetime microscope. In addition to its convenient size, it was much less expensive than a magnifying glass. Dagron had a daguerreotype business, and when he saw microfilm first exhibited in Paris, he hit on the idea of making these small, Mall.05.11_SEA novelty viewers. His version used Stanhope lenses, but instead of two convex lenses, Dagron’s invention had one convex and one flat lens. Dagron obtained a patent

for microphotography in 1859,1 and he contributed his talent for microphotography to France’s war effort during the FrancoPrussian War, specifically during the Siege of Paris (Sept. 19, 1870- Jan. 28, 1871). Dagron convinced the French government that he could communicate information to their allies outside the city by photographing newspapers and other information in miniature form and “mailing” it on carrier pigeons. Upon receiving the microfilm, a magic lantern projected the image which was transcribed and passed along. The government hired Dagron, and he successfully transported more than 100,000 microphotography images. France, however, lost the siege and was defeated by the Prussians. Stanhopes come in almost every shape imaginable, from the champagne bottle and binoculars shown here to miniature bibles, hats, rings, necklaces, pipes, scissors, mourning pendants, charms (in every shape from phonographs to trolley cars), lighters, pens, thimble holders, crosses, in the clasps of knives, TV sets, miniature barrels (Niagara Falls souvenirs) and of course, the oblong rectangular shapes most often seen. Stanhopes’ values are across the spectrum from a couple of dollars to a few hundred. In 2014, a Victorian stickpin with a purple paste-glass hand holding a small, tube-shaped Stanhope Viewer made of 10k gold sold for $351 on eBay. An ivory or bone needle case carved in the shape of a fish sold for $182, and a 2-5/8 inch perfume bottle in the shape of a seltzer bottle sold for $202, both on eBay. Dagron invented the Stanhope Viewer in about 1858, and it has been famous ever since. Editor’s note: Sherron Lawson of Roswell, Ga., correctly identified John Wilkes Booth’s Deringer in the last issue; her name was inadvertently left out. My apologies. ------------------- 1 University of California Southern Regional Library System, www.srlf.ucla.edu/exhibit/text/hist_page3.htm.

by Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $3,333 (25 bids): Brass Plaque Sign City of Paris Dry Goods Co., San Francisco. This is a true piece of Bay Area/San Francisco/Old West History. This is a huge brass corner sign from the historic City of Paris Dry Goods Co. store that was in San Francisco in Union Square. This sign is big, measuring 48 inches wide and 32 inches tall; it has the raised brass ornate letters and hammered copper background. City of Paris was established in 1850 by Felix Verdier during the Gold Rush and was a very important store in San Francisco until 1976. Much info about it can be found online. Christmas was a major destination time for this store when people would come from all over the country to see the 60-foot tall Christmas tree erected annually in the beautiful rotunda. The City of Paris building was one of the only buildings in the area to survive the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake. This sign represents so much in regards to San Francisco and western Americana history that it would surely be a centerpiece to any historical collection. It is very heavy. (Photos: eBay seller gypsiegirlz) DBA: It is so hard to comment on truly one-of-a-kind objects with historic significance. Normally, my comments would be geared to whether the sale is in line with sales of similar (or identical) objects. This is the type of object that one would find in a historical museum for an area. I did find a sale of the Derrydale Press Company/ Eugene V Connett from 1927 that sold for $3,000 in 2007. So, this amount of money is not out of line with sales of something similar.

$706 (21 bids): Art Modern Georg Jensen Henning Koppel Stainless Steel Coffeepot. Georg Jensen is well known for his art modern silver jewelry, but he did produce a variety of utilitarian objects, many in stainless steel. He also was known to collaborate with the Danish artist Henning Koppel. The clean Modernist stainless steel double pot in this auction is by these two artists. The stainless steel is in perfect, unused condition with its original bright factory brush finish. There is one problem though: the larger of the two solid ebony wood handles was poorly reattached by a past owner. I tried to loosen this handle, but I was afraid to force it. There are no other problems or restorations to this 8-inch diameter by 7.75 inches tall stainless steel double pot. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12.)
Treasury Antiques
DBA: Georg Jensen was born on August 31, 1866 and died on October 2, 1935. In 1904, he opened a silversmith company in Copenhagen which quickly became very successful. His works command a great price, and many are in museums. Henning Koppel was born in 1918 and died in 1981. He came to work for Georg Jensen in 1946 after fleeing to Sweden during WWII. When it is stated that he collaborated with Georg Jensen on certain product lines, this means he worked with the company Jensen founded since Georg Jensen was no longer alive at that time. Henning Koppel-designed products are still available from the Georg Jensen store. The sterling objects designed by Henning Koppel command very high prices. The only stainless steel products that I could find are water pitchers which currently sell for around $500 new. I did find a stainless steel sauce pan with the same handle as the coffeepot that sold in Australia in 2012 at auction for the equivalent of $400. I believe this to be a high price for this object at this time.

$10,000 (59 bids): Antique Oceania Pacific Easter Island Wood Ancestor Statue Figurine. A genuine antique tribal carved wood ancestor figure collected in the South Pacific Islands during WWII. The condition is excellent as shown, with no cracks, chips or repairs. The original dark patina carries age well, and the overall smooth wear is further proof of great age and continual use by the people who created this piece. Not for tourists. (Photo: eBay seller posters!.)
$572 (30 bids): Advertising String Holder Gold Dust Twins 1908 Original Sign Antique Store display. This is an original Star Dust Twins 1908Â advertising string holder, one of the most sought-after tin string holders with N. K. Fairbanks advertising three of their most popular products: Gold Dust Granules, Fairy Soap for the bath and Sunny Monday Washday Soap. The three-sided, sixpaneled display is extremely hard to find in any condition. This is a complete rarity! It shows age and wear. This piece stands roughly eight inches tall from the bottom of the tin to the top. I cannot stress enough how sought after this piece is, a must and a welcoming addition to any country store collection. (Photo: eBay seller bluecollarantiques.)
DBA: This item is collectible in two categories: advertising collectibles and Black Americana. It is almost that the more politically incorrect or offensive the advertising may be, the higher the price of the object. Even though the National Association of Colored Women in 1914 challenged the manufacturers of the Gold Dust Twins soap powder to stop using the stereotypes, these images were used through the 1950s. Few of the Gold Dust Twins packaging survives today as these were discarded when empty and made of flimsy cardboard. This is actually the store advertising the soap for sale. I could find two identical to this one that were sold at auction for similar amounts, but one identical sold for $3,750 in May of 2014, so I would say that this one for $572 had to be a good buy. ---------------------Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. DBA: This resembles the Solomon Island ancestor figures that can be found in museums around the world in limited amounts. These carvings represent a male ancestor to whom the people would have prayed for spiritual support and protection. This one is a small household ancestor which would have been kept in the home. When someone says “Easter Island figure, I think of the huge carvedstone figures. The early “sailor trade figures can be found selling for as much as $1,000 and the more recent ones with less detail for under $100. So how do you know if you have a $100 figure, a $1,000 figure or a $100,000 (or more) figure? It would be best to consult a specialist who may have to do some scientific analysis before authenticating. Judging from the number of bids and the interest, several people found this object to be of interest. Compared to what this type of object would sell for at a major auction house, such as Sotheby’s or Christie’s, the seller got a tremendous deal as I found many of these similar object selling upwards of $100,000. One major difference is that the major auction houses require authentication and provenance, a history of ownership. The authentication process may involve much work and cost money up front and take some time as well.

The Shops of Historic Downtown
Recently selected as one of the top ten antiquing towns in the USA by Fodor’s Travel Guide, the 20 antique shops in Historic Downtown Clinton, Tenn., are a must-see for antique collectors and decorators alike. Civil War Collector The
By John Sexton
John, this bag was found in the wall of a house in Wisconsin. It had a picture with it of soldiers in uniform, but the picture is gone. Was wondering what you could tell me about it and its worth? JS: It would have been most interesting to see what kind of photographs were inside this cartridge box. This is a standard Civil War cartridge box that an infantryman carried to hold his”40 rounds,” usually .58 caliber minie balls and paper wraps. The front flap on this box would also hold a gun tool sometimes and caps. The box plate made of stamped brass, lead-filled with iron-loop books was standard issue to late in the war when box plates were replaced by an embossed “US” on the flap. Condition is upmost in evaluating this fairly common accoutrement. Your box appears average at best, and similar can be found at Civil War trade shows priced at $300-$400 typically. U.S. cartridge box, $300$400.
Hello, John. I have a Civil War field desk I’d like to know the value of. The desk came from an old home’s attic in Gardner, Mass., once owned by a Capt. Smith who fought in the Civil War and is buried in Gardner. I know of no other connection to Smith such as to say, he owned it. Can you please give me any idea of its value? JS: Your field desk is very similar to identified Civil War field desks sold in the past. I see similar pieces of furniture with no ID or history at Civil War trade shows usually priced at $300-$500. Typically, the value on these items comes with the identification of who used them. The addition of a name and unit painted or stenciled on it would add value. I have seen several good, identified desks sell for a few thousand dollars privately and in auction. Searching auction sites for similar desks produced only a few sales in the last few years. Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, Texas, sold a similar desk with several hundred documents (lot 52466 June 9, 2012) for $2,250. I’m not sure what the documents were, but no doubt, they brought the bulk of the money. Morphy Auctions in Denver, Penn., sold a desk with similar compartmentalization for $450 (lot 636 February 26, 2010). On a retail level, I feel your field desk will sell for between $300 and $500. A Civil War field desk with no provenance, $300-$500.

Consignments Wanted For Our Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Spring 2015
Touted as one of Julia’s finest fall toy, doll & advertising auctions in recent memory, the auction had all the makings for a blockbuster right from the start. Drawn fresh from three major collections, combined with select pieces from individuals from all over the United States, it was a nonstop parade of quality, condition, rarity, and diversity. With estimates that were realistic and conservative, bidders were treated to one spectacular piece after another. Combined with Julia’s expansive marketing program, their reputation for honest and fair dealing, and some of the finest catalogs in the industry, the results were phenomenal, setting a few world auction records along the way. When the final hammer fell, Julia’s tallied over $1.4 Million, nearly a half million dollars over the total presale estimate of approximately $935,000. We are now accepting quality consignments for our spring 2015 toy, doll & advertising auction. Whether you have one item or an entire collection, please contact us for a free consultation. Name This Famous Person: By Mike McLeod
Charles Monroe Schulz was born on Nov. 26, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minn. Coincidentally, his father Carl was a barber, just like Charlie Brown’s father. Carl was born in Germany, which must have given his son pause when he served as a squad leader for a .50 caliber machinegun team in Europe during WWII. It is reported Charles missed his one opportunity to fire that .50 cal. at the enemy because he had forgotten to load it. Even so, the German soldier in his sights surrendered. In his younger years, Charles Schulz learned cartooning through a correspondence course. While working at another job and cartooning on his own time, his comic “L’il Folks, was accepted for syndication. However, the name was changed by the syndicator because it was similar to another comic strip at the time. The syndicator chose the title of “Peanuts after Howdy Doody’s Peanut Gallery. Schulz hated the name then and for the rest of his life. Charles Schulz’s cartoons were never written for children. He entertained adults by having children say things that adults would say, often from his own experiences in life. “Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.

Charles Schulz
So said Schulz via Charlie Brown about both of their Little Red-Haired Girls. As a young man, Schultz proposed marriage to Donna Mae Johnson, his Little Red-Haired Girl in real life, and was turned down. In 1951, he married Joyce Halverson. Schulz may have suffered from depression to some degree, which could be why he often used “depressing humor in Peanuts—usually at the expense of Charlie Brown. The first Peanuts cartoon published in syndication on Oct. 2, 1950 showed Charlie Brown walking toward two children sitting by a sidewalk. Continued on Page 25

s e l t t o B e Perfum By Marti DeGraaf and Toby Mack The DeVilbiss Manufacturing Company was founded in Toledo, Ohio, in 1888 by Dr. Allan DeVilbiss, a medical doctor specializing in nose and throat medicine. DeVilbiss pioneered a spray atomizer device to apply soothing and medicinal coatings to patients’ throats. DeVilbiss’ industrious and ambitious son Tom joined the company in 1905, and by 1907 convinced his father that the company’s spray technology would be well suited to applying perfume. This would open up a new and bigger market, since both the company’s medical and perfume products would be sold initially through the same drug store outlets. Realizing the importance of visual appeal of his perfume atomizers to his discriminating customers, Tom immediately set out to acquire beautifully made and decorated high-quality glass bottle blanks on which to fit DeVilbiss-made spray

hardware. This took him to the glass artisans of both Bohemia and America, from whom he not only purchased supplies of cut and decorated bottles, but also recruited skilled artisans to work in his own growing decorating department in Toledo. The popularity of perfume atomizers skyrocketed after World War I, with soldiers returning from France with perfume for sweethearts at home and with the spectacular rise of prosperity and opulence known as the “Roaring Twenties.” DeVilbiss was ready with the finest perfume atomizers on the market. The company expanded dramatically. By 1924, it had built a large new 200,000-square foot factory and by 1926 sold 1.5 million atomizer, dropper and accessory products throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. DeVilbiss Lenox Belleek China atomizer in ivory gold decorated urn, 1936; height 6.5 inches.
With the onset of World War II, perfume bottle production was suspended in favor of war materiel production, but after the war, perfume atomizer sales were restarted in 1946, at first with U.S. glass suppliers and then later also with bottles from Europe and Japan. Medical and perfume atomizer production moved from Toledo to a new plant in Somerset, Penn., in 1951. Perfume atomizer production finally closed in 1968, although DeVilbiss Healthcare products are still made at the Somerset plant today. DeVilbiss glass bottle suppliers. Throughout its history, DeVilbiss never made its own glass, although it was Tom’s dream to eventually do so. Instead, it relied on a wide range of some of the premiere glass houses throughout the U.S. and Europe. With factory records and through other means, 58 different glass bottle suppliers have been identified. This has provided collectors with a rich diversity of shapes, styles and colors to acquire. Suppliers included U.S. elegant glassmakers Cambridge, Tiffin, Imperial, Fenton, Morgantown, Central and Westmoreland. American art glass makers included Steuben, Durand, Quezal and Fry. Throughout the 1930s, bottles also came from Czechoslovakian manufacturers, prominently including Josef Riedel Glas. Also prominent in the mid-1930s were U.S.-made porcelain Lenox Beleek bottles, co-branded with both the Lenox and DeVilbiss signatures. After the war, DeVilbiss resumed sourcing from European makers, including: Archimede Seguso, Toso and Moretti from Italy; Brosse and Waltersperger from France; Wittig, Hessen Glaswerke, Steiner & Vogel; and Fuger-Taube from West Germany. Post-war U.S. suppliers included Fenton, Morgantown, Viking, Owens-Illinois, Wheaton, and CarrLowrey. From the late ‘50s, porcelain bottles came from Fairfield of Japan. Quality, design and production excellence. Throughout its history from 1907, DeVilbiss’ hallmark was design excellence together with superb product quality. From 1924 until the late 1940s, its design and decorating department was led by

the brilliant French designer Frederick Vuillemenot, a master of both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco schools. DeVilbiss designed and patented many of their bottles and then outsourced production to their glass company suppliers. Most of the bottle decorating, including cutting, enameling and acid cutback work, was done by DeVilbiss, although some bottles were supplied with decorations applied by the glass producer, particularly those found with etchings done by the Cambridge Glass Company. Decorating techniques included both interior and exterior enameling, which afforded a great range of multi-colored designs. Gold enameling was prominent, either in pattern designs or sponge-acid encrustations. DeVilbiss was also known for beautifully designed and manufactured metal hardware spray or dropper collars and fittings. Brass tubing and other components were shaped and often embossed and then plated with gold, platinum, nickel, chromium or rhodium. Rubber cords, also made by DeVilbiss’ rubber products division, were covered by braiding fine silk threads. Squeeze bulbs were covered by silk nets crocheted by piece-workers operating from their Toledo-area homes through the 1920s and later imported from Europe. Luxury gift packaging, also designed and produced by DeVilbiss, included opulent presentations in beautifully decorated satin or velvet-lined cases. Another unique DeVilbiss offering was its Unconditional Guarantee – a rarity then and now – which bears quoting here: “DeVilbiss Products are guaranteed to give complete satisfaction. Should the least irregularity develop at any time, we will be pleased to promptly repair or replace any that are returned to us, or to make any further adjustments to the entire satisfaction of the dealer or user.” DeVilbiss was proud of its guarantee and used it both as a marketing tool and a way to differentiate itself from its competitors. Collecting DeVilbiss Perfume Bottles. From the beginning, DeVilbiss’ product lines were designed for all tastes and budgets, from basic atomizers to opulent (and expensive) offerings. Some of their most expensive items of the 1920s sold for the equivalent of about $1,000 in today’s dollars. The company worked to design an entirely new line each year but sometimes carried a particularly popular item over to a second or even third year. The range of DeVilbiss-made items that can be found today is extensive. In the early 1920s, DeVilbiss broadened its offerings beyond perfume bottles to

vanity sets, including dresser trays, powder jars, jewel boxes, vases and even candlestick holders. Smokers’ items were offered including cigarette boxes and holders, ash trays and tobacco jars. In 1927, even salt and pepper shakers were made. Most, but not all, of the pre-1930 items were acid stamped on the bottom with the DeVilbiss logo. Afterward, most often paper labels were affixed. As would be expected, DeVilbiss’ success attracted competitors, including Mignon, Vant Woud, Volupte, Holmes Atomizer with Fenton-supplied cranberry swirl bottle and Lucite ornament, 1953; height 6.5 inches.
and Pyramid, along with a host of atomizer offerings from Czechoslovakia. Some can be similar in appearance to DeVilbiss and possibly confusing to the collector. In a few cases, a bottle shape was supplied by the glassmaker to more than one atomizer producer. In even fewer instances, the same bottle shape was also offered by the glass company directly to the retail market with a glass dauber but not with metal spray fittings. Often, competitors’ bottle shapes and decorations were very similar to DeVilbiss designs. One of the best ways for a collector to differentiate an unsigned DeVilbiss bottle from a competitor’s bottle is by learning to recognize DeVilbiss’ and other companies’ metal fitting shapes and styles. Our book, DeVilbiss Perfume Bottles and their Glass Company Suppliers, was designed to identify and highlight the numerous unique DeVilbiss fitting configurations as a guide to the collector. Original or reprinted DeVilbiss company catalogs often do not include a complete guide to a year’s product line, as some products were added after printing, and others were excluded for other reasons. In addition, product line catalogs from the 1907-1920 era are scarce, and in fact the company did not produce a 1927 catalog at all, notwithstanding that year’s offering was stunningly beautiful from top to bottom. We were fortunate to acquire factory production records covering much of the company’s history, which provide an authoritative record of each year’s production. Some of these heretofore unpublished records are included in our book and may clear up some mysteries about who made what, and when. We welcome all to the exploration of the wonderful world of learning and collecting DeVilbiss perfume bottles. ------------------The authors’ newest book, DeVilbiss Perfume Bottles and Their Glass Company Suppliers (Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 2014) is available online at www.schifferbooks.com. Marti DeGraaf and Toby Mack are avid collectors of DeVilbiss perfume bottles and other fine elegant and art glassware. Marti is a past president of the International Perfume Bottle Association, and both Marti and Toby recommend this fine organization to all with an interest in perfume bottle collecting. There are many DIY projects and repurposing options when it comes to antiques, but right off the bat, I want to warn you to know the value of your keepsakes, heirlooms and treasures before you start repurposing. Get a quick and easy online appraisal from me so you know if your piece is
Tip 2: Go all the way! Don’t be afraid to really change an antique. For instance, if you love your grandmother’s highchair and you would really like to put it to good use in your home instead of just having it sit in a corner as a display piece, remove the arms and tray. Re-purpose the high chair as a child’s chair. It will look cute in a corner of a kitchen, a child’s playroom, a grandparent’s den or a dining room. Be sure you know what you are doing when repairing and refinishing wooden pieces and search online for helpful hints.
Tip 3: Re-think the scraps. Do you have a cedar chest filled with old textile pieces like parts of crocheted afghans? Needlepoint pictures that will never see the light of day? Quilted squares that were never made it into a full quilt? If you know that you will never complete these projects, don’t too valuable to repurpose. despair. Julia’s Kicks Off 2015 with $3.5 Million Antiques & Fine Art Auction Julia’s Fine Art, Antique & Asian Department kicked off their 2015 auction season with a fabulous winter auction that spanned three days and featured 2,000+ lots. Because of the exciting array of goods, bidders came out in droves to be a part of the sale. Registering more than 5,000 online bidders representing 61 countries and 650 in-house, absentee and phone bidders, the sale’s massive gross exceeded $3.5 million. Among the vast offerings of fine art, antiques, folk art, and historical items, once again, Asian antiques and artifacts proved to be particularly strong. The sale included hundreds of such lots, some of which came from an estate collection of a renowned Taiwanese diplomatic family with ties to Robert Frost and T.S. Eliot. The collection consisted of a variety of carved figures, seals, censers, jade, porcelain, and more. Of particular note was a magnificent bronze figure of Guanyin from the Ming Dynasty period. Displaying a benevolent expression and shown wearing a long loose robe and elaborate headpiece, decked in divine beading and jewels, she was seated on an ornate lotus stand. This phenomenal piece went out just above its $160,000$180,000 estimate to sell for $189,600. The following lot was a gilt bronze Buddha figure in the Ming style seated on a delicate throne. Ornamented with turquoise and coral, the piece sold at the upper end of its $25,000-$30,000 estimate for $29,625. Jade and jadeite also proved to be quite popular, especially when quality was high and estimates were conservative. Natural jadeite jewelry included two breathtaking emerald green pendants carved depicting Quanyin. The first, mounted within diamond-encrusted scrollwork sold for $26,662, and the second, set within a diamond-encrusted aura, went out at $54,510. From other collections, other historical items included an exceedingly rare silver Congressional Medal for Herbert Leach of the Jeannette Arctic expedition of 1879-1882. This ill-fated mission soured shortly after departure, becoming trapped in an ice pack and drifting north toward the Pole for the next 21 months. Provisions dwindled and eventually the ship began to give way under the pressure of the ice and sank. Leach was one of the 25 survivors and was given this medal, which descended
through the family until being consigned to Julia’s. Coincidentally, it sold to a descendent of Leach for $21,330, exceeding an estimate of $10,000$20,000. Julia's upcoming auctions include a rare lamp and glass auction as well as their toy and doll auction in June and their end-of-summer antiques, fine art, and Chinese artifacts auction in August. Julia’s is currently accepting consignments for these and other upcoming auctions; call immediately for inclusion in them. For more information or to place offers on unsold items, call 207-453-7125. Return to Retro

There’s a reason the Scott Antique Market has been in Atlanta almost three decades, in fact, dozens of reasons. If you haven’t visited the monthly antique market in a while, the dazzling array of antiques, collectibles, people, fabulous food, and all-around atmosphere of joyousness await your return. Besides, it’s a marvelous walking-for-exercise opportunity! I know. I know. Atlanta boasts so much to do, but everything requires travel on the dreaded interstates; too many choices, antique stores and malls are everywhere, etc. But designers and decorators use the Scott Antique Market for their one-of-a-kind finds, and dealers fly from Europe just to peruse the thousands of dealer booths where they can actually discuss purchases with the owners themselves. At the Scott Antique Market, meet the dealers. Learn. Savor. Wander. If you can think of an item, it’s there— somewhere. Do you desire glass? It’s there. Furniture? Got it. How about linens or unique textiles? Check. Pottery, décor or display items, art, antiquity, every kind of collectible—check, check, check. All there. Whatever you enjoy, whatever you need, whatever you want to learn more about, it’s all there, and new choices appear every month. Over 3,500 dealers. buildings with free bus service between them. Also, a surprisingly interesting outdoor area where I found architectural items I had never seen before, except in movies. Investment-quality antiques, furniture from every era and for every style, so much to see and do, one cannot possibly take it all in during one day. Which is just fine because the low $5 admission fee is good all weekend. All dealers are qualified and vetted by the administration. Trustworthy and knowledgeable, many of them travel the world to select the best goods for sale. Although the trends gear towards younger people nowadays, one can still easily add to an ongoing collection or build family heirlooms with treasured surprises. You may surprise yourself by purchasing a large piece. How will you fit it into your tiny sports car? No problem! There is a reliable and long-standing delivery service available with low, affordable rates that will take tender care of your new prize and deliver anywhere. Easy, worry-free. Now, personally, I’m into jewelry, and the Scott Antique Market manages to be the biggest, best jewelry mecca, with the most coveted costume pieces, designer choices, diamond dealers and more! Most jewelry can be found at wholesale prices and the limitless options will keep you enthralled for hours. Jewelry appraisals and repairs are also easily available. I’m in heaven, I tell myself as I search from glittering display to sparkly showcase, one after the other. Lest I forget to eat, the food choices surround the shopping areas. After all the great exercise and walking, you’ll be hungry and the food is delicious. I’m confident the best milkshake ever is to be found only at the Scott Show, blended with homemade custard instead of ordinary ice cream. Or maybe you’d rather have Greek food, Italian sausage, a hotdog,

Antique Appraisals Offered on Opening Day at Brimfield’s Heart-O-The-Mart Show on May 13th On Wednesday, May 13th at 9 a.m. when “ shoppers rush in as the gates open to Heart-O-The Mart” (USA Today), over 400 quality dealers of antiques and collectibles will greet thousands of eager buyers responding to the anticipated call, “Open the gates!” “Through gates 1, 2 and 3 at the front of the field, Gate 4 at the back and even Gate 5 at our parking lot, thousands then flock to our 17-acre field,” said Pam Moriarty, who has been managing Heart-O-The Mart for more than 90 shows since 1984, adding, “The selling is brisk, and the excitement is contagious.” This year, Heart-O-The Mart is offering a new service—appraisals by Peter Yvanovich, SPA. Peter is the founder of New England Inventory & Appraisal Services. He is also president of the National Association of Professional Appraisers (NAPA) in Boston. Peter will be at the Heart-O-
The Mart on all three opening days—May 13th, July 15th and Sept. 9th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. He will be available to appraise any and all items and will charge $10 for one item or $20 for three. All appraisals will be verbal. You can find Peter at the front of the show grounds. Also new this year is the addition of Subway subs, which will join the Sturbridge Coffee House to provide top quality food all week at Heart-O-The Mart, just off the sidewalk along Rte. 20 and at the food concessions on opening day. Bring sunshine, wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and be ready for an exhilarating day of antiquing. For more information about the Heart-O-The Mart 2015 shows, visit the website www.brimfield-hotm.com. Laura Fowler, Office Manager, will be happy to assist you at 413-245-9556 or via email at info@brimfield-hotm.com.
Central Park Antique Shows at Brimfield May 12-17 Central Park Antique Shows, located in the center of Brimfield’s Antique Mile, opens at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12th and continues through Sunday, May 17th. Admission is free. Central Park is a well-known, prime marketplace for antique buyers and collectors and showcases an eclectic array of diversified antiques and collectibles spanning four centuries. Central Park is the home of Brimfield Country Roads, a celebration of Americana presented by expert historians who are dedicated to promoting the awareness of the history of our culture through artifacts remaining from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Customers no longer have to search the vastness of Brimfield to find isolated examples of primitive offerings. Brimfield Country Roads, born in 2011, now numbers more than 20 authentic country dealers, representing the largest grouping of its kind in Brimfield. In sharp contrast to Americana, buyers can immerse themselves in the Mid-Century Modern enclave of dealers who showcase an unparalleled inventory of the refined and simple beauty of modern furniture and unique decorative objects of art from ‘50’s kitsch to ‘80’s Post Modern. Dealers are up-to-date on current trends and cutting-edge designs.
Creative repurposing is well-established at Central Park, where vintage items have been rescued and transformed into one-of-kind fashions, home decor and fun art objects. A funky old seed corn sack is now a “gotta have it” designer bag; unwanted silver-plated spoons have been transformed into majestic rings, necklaces and bracelets. Cast-off chenille bed spreads re-appear as children’s clothing, toy bears and bunnies. Salvaged barn boards become dining tables, consoles and statement pieces. Treat yourself to hand-dyed 1950’s dresses, jackets and shirts or perhaps make yourself a flower using Depression glass, and don’t forget the lighting fixtures uniquely made from old farming implements. Central Park offers a complete spectrum of antiques and collectibles for a one-stop memorable Brimfield adventure. Expect to find fine art, African art, primitives, silver, vintage jewelry, ephemera, vintage linen, buttons, fiestaware, textiles, quilts, Depression glass, Nippon porcelain, clocks, cast iron, advertising, industrial plus the rare and unusual in all genres. Other Central Park 2015 show dates are July 14-19 and September 8-13. Visit www. brimfieldcentralpark.com for additional information.

Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.
All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.
Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.
There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.
Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net
