THE SHOPS OF OCALA, FLORIDA
Ocala – located in central Florida, northwest of Orlando and southwest of Gainesville, off Interstate 75 – derives its name from the extinct Timucuan Indians, who called their village Ocali,
thought to mean “Big Hammock.” Modern-day Ocala was established in 1846 and was a rather unremarkable town until 1943, when Carl G. Rose created the first thoroughbred horse farm there. Many more followed his example, and today Ocala is known as the “horse capital of the world.” It isn’t densely populated (it’s just the 45th largest city in Fla.) but it’s well known to equestrians worldwide. And with horse people comes money, so Ocala has also become a

Southwestern American Indian Bracelets: The Choicest Collectible By Paula A. Baxter
The American Indian jewelry marketplace has a wonderfully diverse selection of adornment, but the cuff bracelet has always had the greatest appeal to collectors. When we examine why these wristlets have proved to be enduringly popular, several factors come into focus. In addition, there are a number of special considerations that face the would-be collector. The two tribes in North American with the largest, most active market for jewelry are the Navajo and Pueblo peoples of the U.S. Southwest. The Navajo occupy the largest reservation in the country, spread over three states and roughly the size of Rhode Island. The twenty-seven Pueblos occupy the central Rio Grande and western valleys of New Mexico and a remote section of northeastern Arizona. The cities with the most galleries and stores for Indian jewelry are Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos and Gallup in New Mexico, and Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona. Every year, large Indian Markets are held in Phoenix and Santa Fe that draw thousands of buyers who enjoy purchasing directly from Native artists who come from all over the continent.

Copper arrowhead bracelet done in the style of Fred Harvey tourist era. There also exists an equally thriving market for antique historical Southwestern Indian jewelry (1870s to 1930s) and vintage adornment (1940s–1980). If these dates seem rather recent compared to other categories of collectibles, this has to do with the history of the Navajo and Pueblo who did not begin making metalwork until after the Civil War. The earliest examples of copper, brass, and silver bracelets can be dated to the 1870s, and they began setting turquoise, coral, jet, and other semiprecious stones in silver by the 1880s. Historical era jewelry, especially bracelets, command high prices largely because of the rarity of these items—particularly since many pieces were either melted down to make newer works or buried with their owners. Nineteenth-century Indian bracelets tend to be either all silver with geometrical stamp work or silver cuffs set with one or more pieces of stonework (usually turquoise), of surprisingly high quality given the rough tools of that time. The first phase of American tourism in the West began in the early 1900s with the Fred Harvey Company’s domination of transcontinental railway travel services. The second era, tourism by car, began in the late 1920s with the opening of Route 66. In both periods, outsiders flooded New Mexico and Arizona. Curio silver bracelets became a popular collectible because they were lightweight, attractively exotic in design, and very portable. Tourists also stopped at a trading post on the Navajo reservation or in a reservation border town like Gallup to purchase a piece they knew had been made for and/ or worn by an Indian. Indian traders were Anglo businessmen (and a few women) who established a trade system with the Indians in the early-to-mid twentieth century. Indian smiths were making larger quantities of jewelry for sale to themselves and the general marketplace. Already, the stereotypical Indian bracelet was a solid silver cuff stamped with various geometrical or organic design motifs and set with turquoise. Various Native cultures became known for their stylistic renditions: the Hopi developed fine overlay work, the Zunis produced delicate lapidary work on silver, often using multiple small stones, and Navajo cuffs might be narrow bands of engraved and stamped silver or larger pieces with finely shaped stones in handmade bezels. More than any other existing jewelry form, Southwestern Indian-made bracelets are immediately recognized as cuffshaped. While Indian artists do create soldered round bangles or link bracelets on occasion, those who look for a real Indian bracelet expect a cuff. The Indian bracelet encircles the Continued on Page 6

www.antiqueorientalrugs.com Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Southwestern American Indian Bracelets: The Choicest Collectible Continued from Page 6 sheet silver once it became available. Over the years, some American Indian jewelers have retained the notion that bracelets for commercial sale shouldn’t be massive or heavy. Many Zuni jewelers produce lightweight pieces as a matter of course. Other creators feel that cuffs should retain some modicum of heft. The solidity of Southwestern Indian bracelets is a characteristic, but not a given, of that essential cuff. Many dealers and collectors particularly cherish the concept of a sculptural bracelet. In addition, bracelets made by non-Natives living in the American Southwest espouse the cuff shape as one of their product characteristics. Such pieces go by the label “Southwestern Style.” Sometimes consumers new to collecting become confused by this distinction. Southwestern Style jewelry can and does resemble Nativemade work; those in the know in the marketplace, however, recognize that this term means the pieces are usually not Indian-made but do reflect Native design elements. Looked at in a certain way, this is a compliment to Native
ingenuity, since imitation has always been a genuine form of flattery. Southwestern Indian Bracelets: The Essential Cuff by Paula A. Baxter / Photography by Barry Katzen
This design history of Southwestern Indian bracelets examines their start in 1868 up through 1970, and the post-1980 legacy that honors those first 100 years. More than 360 color photos illustrate the Continued on Page 35

Name This Famous Antique by Mike McLeod
This is Vincent van Gogh’s Poppy Flowers that has been stolen twice and recovered once. It is still missing. Painted in 1887, it was first stolen in 1997 from a museum in Cairo, Egypt, and then recovered a decade later in Kuwait. It was again stolen from the same museum in 2010—none of the alarms in the museum were working at the time and only a few of the cameras. Poppy Flowers measures about 25.5 x 21 inches, and while not very large, its value is quite high, as much as $50 million. Of course, thieves do not get retail value on stolen paintings when selling them. It is estimated that artwork sells for 10% of value or less. Even so, a $5-million payday tempts most art thieves. The other option with stolen artwork is to use it as currency in trade. Two other van Goghs are also missing: View of the Sea at Scheveningen and Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuene. They were stolen from the Vincent van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2002; however, two men left enough evidence behind for them to be captured within a year. The paintings, valued at about $300 million total, have not been recovered. The pair served about four years in prison for their crime. Unbelievably, under Dutch law, thieves can become the new owners of paintings they have stolen after 20 or 30 years in their possession if the rightful owners do not lay claim to them. This puts a news spin on the saying, “Justice is blind,” and it is bad news for the Vincent van Gogh Museum which holds 200 of his paintings and 500 drawings.
Poppy Flowers, stolen and still missing.
Vincent van Gogh at about 18.
Van Gogh’s work is often a target of thieves, obviously for their monetary value, but also because he was so prolific in his short life of 37 years (March 30, 1853 to July, 29 1890). He created more than 800 paintings and a total of 2000+ pieces of art. His other paintings that have been stolen and fortunately recovered include: Blossoming Chestnut Branches; The Fortifications of Paris with Houses; Weaver’s Interior; Four Cut Sunflowers; The Potato Eaters; Still Life Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers; Still Life with Irises; Wheatfield with Crows; Still Life with Bible; Digging Farmer’s Wife; The Sitting Farmer’s Wife; Wheels of the Water Mill in Gennep; and Breton Women, which was taken twice. Art theft totals billions of dollars per year. The FBI maintains the National Stolen Art File for reporting stolen artwork.

Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell is known by most for establishing the Boy Scouts. But how many know of his 217-day victory at the Siege of Mafeking? Robert Stephenson Smyth Powell was born on Feb. 22, 1857 in London. His father Reverend Baden Powell was a mathematician, professor at Oxford and an Anglican priest. His mother was Henrietta Grace Smyth, the Reverend’s third wife. She was 22 years old when she married, and he was 50. They had several children together. The Reverend died when Robert was just three years old, and afterwards, the family’s last name was changed to Baden-Powell, honoring the father. However, his mother was supremely important in Robert’s eyes, and he later credited her with being the reason for his success in life.1 After joining the military at a young age, Baden-Powell served in Malta, Rhodesia, Zimbabwe, India and South Africa. Before the Second Boer War while in a northern province of South Africa, Baden-Powell’s small army of several hundred military men, civilians and Africans were surrounded by a force of several thousand Boers in the town of Mafeking. The siege lasted 217 days. Baden-Powell and his men fought off and held out against the superior force until relief arrived. For this victory, Baden Powell was acclaimed a national hero in Britain. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle served as a medic in the Second Boer War, and he also wrote about the Siege of Mafeking in The Great Boer War, describing Baden-Powell thusly: “Colonel Baden-Powell is a soldier of a type which is exceedingly popular with the British public. A skilled hunter and an expert at many games, there was always something of the sportsman in his keen appreciation of war. In the Matabele campaign, he had outscouted the savage scouts and found his pleasure in tracking them among their native mountains, often alone and at night, trusting to his skill in springing from rock to rock in his rubber-soled shoes to save him from their pursuit. There was a brain quality in his bravery which is rare among our officers. Full of veldt craft and resource, it was as difficult to outwit as it was to outfight him. But there was another curious side to his complex nature… An impish humour broke out in him, and the mischievous schoolboy alternated with the warrior and the administrator. He met the Boer commandoes with chaff and jokes which were as disconcerting as his wire entanglements and his rifle-pits. The amazing variety of his personal accomplishments was one of his most striking characteristics. From drawing caricatures with both hands simultaneously,

In 2009, his Sketches in Mafeking & East Africa dated to 1924 sold at Christie’s for $2,849. He was also an author, and his writings of scouting, tracking and woodcraft were used as training manuals in the military and became the foundation for his book, Scouting for Boys, a runaway bestseller. In 1907, Baden-Powell held a camp for about 20 boys on an island south of the English coast. Its success inspired him to publish Scouting for Boys, which ignited the movement like marshmallows over a campfire. For his service in scouting and in the military, Robert Smyth Baden-Powell was raised to peerage, or nobility, in 1922 when he was created (as they say) a baronet. As 1st Baron Baden-Powell, Lord is placed before his name. In 1929, another title of peerage was created for him: Baron Baden-Powell, of Gilwell in the County of Essex. Like his father’s marriage to his mother, Baden-Powell married late in life. Olave St. Clair Soames was 22, and he was 55 in 1912. They later retired to Kenya in Africa, and he passed away there on Jan. 8, 1941. In Westminster Abbey, a plaque dedicated to him reads: “Robert Baden-Powell, Chief Scout of the World.” Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified Robert Baden-Powell. ---------1 Jeal, Tim, Baden-Powell.
Andy Warhol Stolen Again NBC News reported seven of Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup Series were stolen from the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, Mo., on April 7. In 2015, nine prints from his Endangered Species Series were discovered stolen from Moviola, a California company, after they were replaced with color copies years before. In 2009, ten screen prints from Warhol’s Athlete Series were stolen from the home of Richard L. Weisman, a friend of the artist who commissioned the paintings. Two of the Endangered Species Series were returned to police and one was sold through an auction house. Paintings in the Athlete Series included Muhammad Ali, O.J. Simpson, Dorothy Hamill, Pelé, Jack Nicklaus, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tom Seaver, Willie Shoemaker, Chris Evert and Rod Gilbert. Weismann commissioned eight sets of this series, paying $100,000 for them (Seattle Times, 10/13/2009), and one set sold at Christie’s in 2011 for $5,682,500. In 2007, Muhammad Ali from the series auctioned for $9,225,000 at Christie’s. Andy Warhol passed away on Feb. 22, 1987.

$172.50 (31 bids, 19 bidders): 1935 Boston Braves Babe Ruth Score Counter Quaker Oats Premium Watch Fob. Produced for Quaker Oats by the Parisian Novelty Company of Chicago, this rare antique Round Score Counter depicts Babe Ruth. It measures 1.75 inches in diameter and depicts a close-up photograph of Babe Ruth wearing a Boston Braves cap. On the back is a celluloid score counter with five separate wheels. Besides strikes and balls, it keeps track of the score and the innings. This Babe Ruth Score Counter is from 1935 after he retired and joined the Boston Braves. This was not only a score counter, but it had a holder at the top so it could be worn as a watch fob. DBA: A fob was worn outside a gentleman’s watch pocket and was used to extract the timepiece. Because it could be seen, it was used for advertising. These advertising fobs ranged from expensively produced ones to paper or plastic ones. This one has survived because it is of Babe Ruth, and others just like this one can be found selling for between $85 and $350. $2,034 (35 bids, 12 bidders): 1880s-1890s Leather Baseball Catcher’s Chest Protector. How often do you see one of these? The leather on this protector is in great condition. It is very thick and strong and still very supple. It is two-sided with horse hair padding in between! All of the edge stitching is nice and tight. It also has several old rivets for added strength. It has both of the thick leather shoulder straps with steel buckles, which are in great condition. It has signs of wear and use but no damage. It is a nice, heavy, full adult-size protector measuring 27 inches high x 18 inches wide, not counting the straps. There are no visible markings. How amazing would this very early antique baseball catcher’s chest protector look displayed in your office, sports room, or man cave? It will make a great addition to anyone’s sports collection! (Photo: eBay seller hammersportsrelics) DBA: This is definitely a hard object to find in good condition. I could only find two of these offered by dealers but for less money. I would say the seller got the deal here, although these are rare, and baseball is so popular.

Similar prints of the era are in a wide range of prices, depending on the venue, for up to several hundred dollars. I found you online while searching information about an awesome find today. My husband and I were visiting my sister in Connecticut today, and we got out our metal detector. We found this belt plate and some loops that go with it about 12 inches under the ground. There is a lot of corrosion on the wreath part of it, but the plate is in good shape. There is still a small piece of the leather intact, too. I was wondering if you could tell us what you know about this. Thanks and can’t wait to hear from you. JS: Your buckle is a US Model 1850 sword belt plate. The corrosion under the eagle is remnants of an applied soldered wreath. This particular plate is the most commonly encountered of Civil War enlisted cavalry issue belt Asheford buckles. It is most interesting Institute of that the entire belt was still there when lost. The keeper Antiques for buckle and the “D” rings attached the sword hangers. Looking through my parents’ belongings, I found a print that was given to my grandfather who was a newspaperman for the Brooklyn Eagle. There is a label on the back of the photo that says it was one of 50 prints of the Matthew Brady photo. I feel that the photo presented was authentic since it was found with other artifacts of my grandfather’s that had been boxed away for more than 50 years. I am enclosing an image of the photo and the typed inscription on the back of the frame. I haven’t opened the frame to look at the image but wanted to see if this was a unique print since I don’t see it online at all. JS: This is indeed an interesting image which I have not seen before. It appears to be a copy of an original piece of art or possibly even the original. It is not a photograph. The art is reminiscent of several different images published in periodicals of the day such as Harper’s Weekly or Leslie’s. There were no photographers actually at the surrender scene, though many A print, not a photo, of paintings and prints of Lee and Timeless Antiques.8th.H..12.08_SEA.indd and Lee, perhaps A US Model 1850 sword belt Grant at Appomattox are known Grant from a magazine. plate, $250-$300. with several of them shaking hands. JS: This sword dates to circa 1860 and is known as a “militia staff.” The cruciform “bowtie”-shaped cross guard was popular in America starting in the 1830s, and the addition of the patriotic shield started about 1860 on the central languet. This type of sword was often carried by pre-war militia officers, both North and South, and is often seen in early war or pre-war photographs or paintings. The “J. Lambert, Phila” marking on the scabbard throat represents “Joseph Lambert” who was a Philadelphia agent for military goods as early as 1839 and on through the Civil War. This particular pattern sword is quite common, but yours is a better-than-average example with a complete maker marked scabbard which will bring a premium. This sword should sell for about $500 in the Civil War market.

March Firearms Auctions in Fairfield, Maine Total $19 Million
James D. Julia’s Firearms Auction March 14-15 grossed approximately $15 million with 20 lots realizing $100,000 or more. A pristine Volcanic #2 pistol once in the Colt Firearms Museum hit $92,000. The Paul Tudor Jones II Collection saw several highlights. An engraved Model 66 Winchester with carved ivory stocks made for Mexican President Porfirio Diaz owned by Paul Tudor Jones II sold for $230,000. Jones’ rare Winchester 1876 1 of 100 also fared well; it went out at $230,000 also. Jones’ cased, consecutive numbered exhibition quality Colt Model 1860 Armys presented to General Joseph Hawley for his service as President of the U.S. International Exhibition in Philadelphia auctioned for $212,750. Another exciting piece was a spectacular Lefever “Optimus” quality shotgun presented by the Friends of Industry to Pres. Benjamin Harrison, an avid duck hunter; it hit $120,750. Of the desirable Winchesters, one of the most beautiful examples was a factory engraved, John Ulrich-signed, special order Deluxe 1894 Takedown. Engraved on one side with a grizzly bear on a ledge and a leaping stag on the reverse and inlaid with gold, it went out at $103,500. A super rare and desirable Colt Model 1883 U.S. Navy Gatling Gun on tripod together with two extra drums generated a total of $346,150. A great number of beautiful Colts were available. One of the best Single Actions was a black powder, factory engraved, plated gun featuring pearl grips and shipped to Charles Hummel, San Antonio, Texas in 1885. This beauty went out at $92,000. Speaking of Colts, this sale included the esteemed Collection of Steve Ardia. A rare rosewood-cased Gustav Young engraved 1851 Navy sold for $69,000. Another beauty from the Ardia Collection was an extremely fine 1860 fluted, cased Colt Army; the final price was $74,750. the earliest Colt creation. An extremely rare Colt #5 holster model Texas Paterson cased with all its accessories shot up to $345,000. Julia’s sales regularly include outstanding Civil War and Confederate items. A Cofer Portsmouth revolver battled to $149,500. A LeMat revolver SN 8, which had belonged to Confederate General Beauregard, is considered by many to be one of the finest condition Confederate revolvers ever known. LeMat’s lethal handguns provided many Cavalry officers with a 7-9 shot pistol featuring a second barrel that housed a 16 ga. shotgun filled with buckshot. Beauregard’s historic pistol sold at $224,250. The finest extant Dance Revolver inscribed to cavalryman Charles Hill, Company H, 35th Texas Cavalry, went out at just under $150,000. A Texas Confederate L.E. Tucker Lancaster Confederate Navy revolver topped out at $172,500. The highlight of the day for Confederate items was a much-coveted and unique “Sisterdale” Texas Dragoon revolver. The only example in existence, it retains its original cow horn grips, and it leaped to $253,000 For more details, visit www.jamesdjulia.com/firearms.
