Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.

There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.

Harry Potter and the narwhal tusk A 130-year-old narwhal tusk engraved with the name of a character from the Harry Potter books has been sold at auction in England for a little more than $50,000 (reportedly to an American maritime museum). Collector John Jeffries, 64, an Englishman, bought the tusk at auction himself around 20 years ago (for about $3,000) but only recently noticed it was engraved with the name of Cornelius Fudge, a Navy man to whom it had been presented in 1881. That’s the name of the Minister of Magic in the Potter books. Jeffries, astounded by this, wrote a letter to author JK Rowling, to tell her about his discovery. She wrote back: “How utterly extraordinary! No, I made up the name Cornelius – or thought I did. I had never come across it and did not know of the existence of a naval C.F. Thank you for a most interesting addition to the postbag. With very best wishes, JK Rowling.” Jeffries graciously donated 3 percent of the sale price of the tusk to a multiple sclerosis charity, knowing that Rowling’s mother had died of the disease at age 45.

Nazi-looted artwork totals about $1.3 billion By now you may have heard about the raid German authorities made on a Munich apartment that uncovered

more than 1,400 artworks – by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall and Otto Dix – worth an astounding $1.3 billion. The works had been confiscated during World War II under the direction of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, who ordered Hildebrandt Gurlitt to seize what was seen as “degenerate” art. The recent find was made at Gurlitt’s son’s apartment. That was two years ago, but the story only recently came to light when it was reported in the German news magazine Focus. German authorities kept mum on the find, which has led to charges they covered up the discovery (charges they deny). Cornelius Gurlitt, meanwhile, who is 80, has been charged with hoarding stolen art. He says he wants his art back, and remarkably, after the heirs or rightful owners of as many of the artworks as possible can be located, he will probably be allowed to keep whatever remains.

The Shops of Austell, Georgia You’re all invited to Austell, the loveliest town in Georgia, founded in 1855 and located just north and west of Atlanta, next to Marietta, in the heart of a small historic area of Cobb County. Many people know us for little more than the flood of 2009, from which the town has made a complete and remarkable recovery. But Austell is so much more than that, and definitely worth the drive.

We have four antique shops, several boutiques, nice restaurants (like Wallace’s Pit-Cooked BBQ)and more, all convenient to one another. Like many small Georgia towns, Austell takes Sundays and Mondays off, but if you’re in the area between Tuesday and Saturday we are a must visit. We’re a hop, skip and a jump from I-20, west of Six Flags. Come on out. We’d love to see you soon!

Five cannons retrieved from Blackbeard’s ship Archaeologists continue to pull up artifacts from the site where the notorious pirate Blackbeard’s ship Queen Anne’s Revenge sank off the North Carolina coast in 1717. On one day in October, crews lifted five cannons out of the water, the heaviest weighing 3,000 pounds and the other four 2,000 pounds. Records show the Queen Anne’s Revenge (a French slave ship that Blackbeard captured and renamed, as a poke at the Queen of England) had 40 cannons. So far, 22 cannons have been raised from the ocean floor. Five months after the ship sank in Beaufort Inlet, Blackbeard was killed by volunteers from the Royal Navy.

The wreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge was only discovered in 1996. Since then, a staggering 280,000 artifacts have been recovered from the wreck. Archaeologists hope to recover all that remains by the end of next year, and it’s a race against time. They are worried about deterioration brought on by hurricanes that have hit the coast in recent years. The largest cannon just retrieved was made in Sweden. Ringo: “All I’ve got is a photograph…” Nearly 50 years ago – on Feb. 7, 1964 – six students at Fair Lawn High School in Fair Lawn, N.J., gathered in the student lounge and cut school – to go see The Beatles. The Fab Four were landing in America for the first time, and the kids (Gary Van Deursen, Suzanne Rayot, Arlene Norbe, Charles Schwartz, Bob Toth and Matthew Blender) decided they just had to make the scene. So they hopped into Gary’s father’s white Chevy Impala and headed down to JFK airport. Little did they realize what awaited them. The stay at JFK was uneventful – police had barricaded off much of the area, and the six had to strain just to catch a glimpse of the Lads from Liverpool in the distance. But on the drive back home, they were passed by four limousines – each one carrying a Beatle. Amazingly, as they ran parallel to one, Ringo rolled down his window, engaged them in conversation and even snapped their photo, which was used in his book Photographs. Only recently were the six kids who skipped school on that famous day identified.

$4,707 (24 bids): 20th c. German Hanau Solid Silver Parrot Figure, Chester Import, c. 1903. The statuette is particularly large, very naturalistically well-refined, with hinged wings and pulloff head set with glass eyes. The bird stands on a filled silver base modeled as a log. The piece bears the German silver purity mark (935 standard, very high) on each part and other French and Dutch import marks. The piece is also fully hallmarked, English import mark (925+ standard), Chester, year 1903 (C), Import’s mark SBL (Samuel Boyce Landeck). In great condition, just general wear and a very small chip to one wing. Height: 28.5 cm; width: 8.5cm; weight, 685g. marks looking like hallmarks from that period. This is more of a retail price than an auction price. There were several similar silver figural animal objects that had been sold for less than half this price. So this is a very good deal for the seller, but my belief is that with this being an accurately marked Hanau object and very unique, collectors made this a soughtafter object.

or lead shot to make the sounds. These early baskets were first made for storage, but they became a source of income as people began to collect them as tourist objects. The materials to make the baskets were collected usually in the spring and woven in the winter months when getting out was not so comfortable. It would take about 300 hours to make a basket like this. This is an auction price for this item, and retail would be at least $2,500. The buyer got a tremendous deal. $2,550 (75 bids): c. 1890s Huge Wooden Steamship Riverboat Ship’s Wheel. This wheel measures 72 inches across and is quite ornate when compared to most. It has the large brass cover cap in the front with the steel keyway mount on the back. It also has a brass ring around both sides of the perimeter wood. This wheel came from the scrap yard at Mare Island and was given to and hung in the Coral Reef Restaurant in Sacramento, Calif., which has long since closed. This wheel is very impressive in person and very heavy. I have had several antique ships’ wheels over the years, and I think this may be the nicest I have seen. It likely was in a passenger-type ship as

were great. The superb three-dimensional Pantin weights were made during the late 1870s. These flowers, salamanders, fruit and the famous silkworm weights are arguably the finest group of weights ever created. A small number of millefiori weights were made in Russia during the classic period, but the weights most associated with that country, those containing wonderful lampwork, were made in this Intermediate Period. A few years later, the Mt. Washington roses and strawberries were made. A different kind of three-dimensional weight, the crimp flower, was developed and produced by several glassworkers in Millville, N.J., during the early 1900s. About the time of the Second World War, the great Scottish artist Paul Ysart and the dean of American paperweight artists Charles Kaziun independently started trying to rediscover the techniques of the classic French paperweights, which had been made 70 years earlier. The success of their individual efforts is largely responsible for the next period, the revival of this almost lost art. This third period, 1950 to date, the Revival, has been an exciting time for the collector. There are more good paperweight artists now than at any other time in history. Technical advances are being made constantly, and though the basic techniques remain the same, there is more variety of artistic expression due to the greater control each artist has over his medium. This is a vital art form, one that celebrates beauty, contrary to many of the other artistic disciplines, which as Dr. Francis Schaeffer1 puts it, â€œâ€Śhave fallen below the line of despair.â€?

Rare Faberge figurine sells for $5.98 million Executors going through items in the attic of George and Betty Davis in Rhinebeck, N.Y., made the discovery of a lifetime some months back. There, in a plain wooden box, was a Faberge portrait hardstone figure of Nikolai Nikolaievich Pustynikov, a loyal personal bodyguard to Russia’s Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Tsar Nicholas II had commissioned the renowned artisans at Faberge to produce the figure for his wife Alexandra in 1912. That was only a few years before the Russian Revolution. The Davis estate commissioned Stair Galleries in Hudson, N.Y., to auction the figure, which it did this fall. The figure carried a pre-sale estimate of $500,000-$800,000, but it ended up selling for $5.2 million ($5.98 million with the buyer’s premium). The buyer was the noted London-based jeweler Wartski, which specializes in the work of Carl Faberge and Russian works of art. Only 50 portrait figures were known to have been carved by Faberge. They are as rare as the more highly publicized Imperial Easter Eggs.

The previous record holders were three copies of John Jay Audubon’s four-volume, hand-colored The Birds of America at $11.5 million, $8.8 million and $7.9 million. The Bay Psalm Book was the first book published in North America, and this copy is one of 11 still existing and still intact books from the original printing of 1,700 copies in 1640. This copy was one of two owned by Old South Church in Boston (where Benjamin Franklin was baptized). It was sold to prepare to replenish its endowment fund for $7 million in repairs needed for the church.1 Other copies of The Bay Psalm Book are in the possession of the Library of Congress, Harvard, Yale and Brown

Whereunto is prefixed a discourse declaring not only the lawfullnes, but also the necessity of the heavenly Ordinance of singing Scripture Psalmes in the Churches of God. The book contains psalms translated from Hebrew and set in rhythmic meter for singing. Music was not added until a later reprinting. Stephen Daye, a locksmith who emigrated from England with his family to Cambridge, Mass., was the printer of the Bay Psalm Book.

St. Petersburg's two strongest selling points are sunshine and shopping. The former can be enjoyed virtually year-round; the latter comes in the form of malls, factory outlet stores, discount chains, specialty shops, membership warehouses, and —oh, yes— a cavalcade of wonderful antiques and collectibles stores. The advertisers on this page offer a taste of what we mean.

Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. What's Selling on eBay? Continued from Page 14 I doubt they would have bothered with the extra details on a commercial ship’s wheel. Overall, a very impressive maritime antique. (Photo: eBay seller gypsiegirlz.) DBA: This is a very large ship’s wheel as most ship’s wheels have eight spokes, and this one has ten spokes. It is a late 19th century ship’s wheel or helm. This is an extremely large price for such an object. While a similar size could not be found, several 60-inch wheels were found selling for around $350 at auction. The buyer got a statement piece, but the seller got a good deal. $2,838 (21 bids): Ornate Antique Pull-Down Oil Lamp Chandelier w/ Dragons & Pink Hobnail Shade. You are bidding on an ornate antique oil lamp, circa 1900. The lamp has a wonderful pink hobnail globe that measures 13.75 x 5.75 inches. From the rim that holds the globe are dazzling glass spear prisms. Under the oil well are two ornately scrolling dragons. Every detail is spectacular. The lamp hangs 40 inches from the ceiling and pulls down another 40 inches. The mechanism operates smoothly. The entire fixture is in good operating condition. The clips that attach the bottom section to the ring have been replaced and are not original. The hanging disk that keeps the soot from soiling the upper part of the fixture is missing. (Photo: eBay seller rkingdom1.)

DBA: While these old oil pull-down chandeliers can be found in the marketplace (but are getting harder to find), this one is particularly ornate and nice. Sometimes, these are called hanging parlor oil lamps or hanging library oil lamps. Auction descriptions rarely state safety issues, and those in retail advertisements almost always state that the fixture had been re-wired or refitted with oil. At $2,838, this is a retail price for this object. ------------------------Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. Civil War Collector The

By John Sexton

Hello John, I’m attaching photos of a knapsack pipe that I believe is from the Civil War Era. It is a pipe case with the pipe bowl and stem nestled inside. The pipe can be filled with tobacco plug when closed and cut off with the serrated knife lever on top. On the front of the silver case, there is a hunting engraving on the left and a Civil War campsite on the right. There is a nice label inside reading, “The Ridgewood Smoking Tobacco Company, manufactured by the Ridgewood Mfg. Co. Patented May 20th 1862.” Also, “The Ridgewood Patent Pipe Tobacco case office 420 Broadway, N.Y. Patented May 20, 1862” is stamped on the match holder inside. It is 3 1/2 inches wide x 2 1/8 high x 1 3/8 deep. I’m interested in learning something of this pipe’s historical and monetary value.

I am Koen J.Vallons from Belgium. I will have gladly further information on this saber. Because here in our country, I can find no information! Have bought this on a flea market. Information stamps: US, MM, 1864, Ames MF Co., Chicopee Mass., 3032. Would this original be according to you? What would the value be of this saber? (P.S.: Sorry for my bad English :) JS: Your sword is a Civil War pattern 1860 US Cavalry saber; however, it is not original. Your sword emulates all the characteristics of manufacture, markings and inspection of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, which was the largest Civil War manufacturer of swords.

Nashville H

Your sword most likely is of recent manufacture from either Spain or India. Unfortunately, these “fake” swords are common in flea markets and online auctions. An original 1864 dated Ames Cavalry Saber, in average condition, complete with scabbard, sells for about $800 retail. Your sword, when sold as a reproduction, can be found for between $50 and $100.

Getting New Owners by Millie Downey After 29 long and glorious years, the Sanlando Glass Show will be under new supervision. Bill and I obtained the show in 1986 when it was known as the Sanford Glass Show. It originated in 1973 (being the first glass show in the State of Florida) under the supervision of Sara K. and Edison Myers. She had a successful 13 years of the show and then turned it over to the Central Florida Depression Glass Club. They then turned it over to us. We can say the show has been around the block, but it has always maintained the quality and integrity of a first-class show. It is one of the shows a glass collector doesn’t want to miss. Now, the new leaders are no strangers to glass collectors as they have been dealers in the show for about 15 years and have

traveled the show circuit much longer. So please make plans to attend the show on Jan. 25 and 26 so you can meet Glen and Carolyn Robinson and Larry and Brooke Newton. I’m sure you will recognize them from participating in the show these past years. Are the Downeys retiring and resting on their laurels? By no means. We will still maintain our glass and china shop on Edgewater Drive in Orlando, and of course, I have my orchids. Bill will never get caught up on his honey-do list of jobs. Don’t forget, there will be another show coming up on Jan. 24 and 25, 2015. Make plans to attend and join in the festivities with the new owners. Thank you for all your support and loyalty these past 29 years.

Round Top Winter Show Corrals Antiques in Texas By Tom O’Hara Susan and Bo Franks are planning for a full house this January 24-25 with the Winter Antiques Show at The Big Red Barn in Round Top, Texas. Susan has more than 100 dealers exhibiting at this ninth annual winter show, a full house again with many Texas dealers and also others from as far as Florida, Pennsylvania and New England. The audience for the “cabin fever escape” is many of the homeowners, antiques collectors and decorators from Texas and beyond who come for the mixed variety of antiques, collectibles and décor offered. A sampling of the exhibitors includes Fred Cain from Fort Myers, Fla., who will bring a collection of early antiques with an English and Continental flare. As a retired museum curator, Cain picks his inventory very selectively. His sales usually include furniture and fine art all at affordable prices. Central Pennsylvania dealer David Drummond in an interview for this story said he will “…bring a goodly supply of garden antiques for this major, early-in- the-season show.” He also will have a collection of early American decorative arts for sale. Cynthia Brooks, a regular at the big spring and fall shows with her business partner Mary Vidano, will offer a collection of Western Americana for the camp and lodge. Boulder, Co., natives, they have created a specialty in that venue with home furnishings, accessories and lighting. The Vernon’s, Brenham, Texas, dealers will be there with their collection of early Texas furniture. Look for the Harpers of Pasadena, Texas, with the results of their shopping in the eastern United States. Patty Walsh is expected from Chappell Hill, Texas, with her early Colonial Era antiques. At the Winter Antiques Show, all exhibits are inside the Big Red Barn, protected from the weather and with food service and free Antiques, Furniture, Glassware, parking on site. What is a Glass Paperweight? Continued from Center Gloss A close, concentric millefiori paperweight with five rows of canes around a central silhouette cane of a dancing lady. Signed with a cane reading “SL” for St. Louis, ca. 1850, 3-inch diameter. Since about 1900, there have been hundreds of people who have made glass paperweights of one type or another. In this group would be the advertising, slogan and tourist shop weights. Most of these are of limited artistic merit at best, and many are downright ugly. Of the millions of glassblowers in the world during this period, perhaps 30 or 40 have been able to make good paperweights. Most collectors are only interested in weights from the best of this small group. ------------------Francis A. Schaeffer, The God Who is There, Downers Grove, IL, InterVarsity Press, 1968. 1
