Obsessed with Hermès By Lynn Morgan
This Hermès Extraordinary Collection Hermès extremely rare 35cm Matte Pink 35cm Diamond, Shiny Black Porosus 5P Alligator Birkin Bag with Palladium Crocodile Birkin Bag with 18kt. White Hardware sold at auction for $104,500 in Gold Hardware realized $122,500 at a an April 2013 Heritage auction. Dec. 2012 Heritage auction. The Hermès handbag is one of the most passionately adored, relentlessly pursued and hotly coveted items in all of fashion. It’s a timeless icon of status, jet-setting chic and immaculate style, instilling a ferocious acquisitive ardor in its many fans. Grace Kelly and Jackie Onassis were Hermès lovers. Today, celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Katie Holmes, Sarah Jessica Parker and former French First Lady Carla Brunei-Sarkozy are all fans, and Victoria “Posh” Beckham is seldom seen without a Birkin on her arm. Even Jay-Z has rapped the praises of “Birkin Bags.” They have inspired countless breathless blogs and Michael Tonello’s witty bestseller, Bringing Home the Birkin (William Morrow Paperbacks, $14.99). Why all the fuss? Diane D’Amato, director of luxury accessories at Heritage Auctions, says Hermès simply creates an incredible product. “Each bag is a masterpiece in and of itself, handcrafted by artisans in France,” she says. “Wearing Hermès transports you to the rarified air of the effortlessly chic and stylish.” For many fans, an Hermès bag is a rite of passage, a signifier of success and maturity, the symbol of a lifelong goal finally achieved. When Martha Stewart was criticized during her 2004 trial for appearing in court wearing not one, but two Hermès bags—a Birkin and a Garden Party—she explained that the Birkin
was an old favorite she had purchased to celebrate one of her earlier successes. It was a kind of lucky talisman for her. All over the world, Hermès lovers understood how she felt. Among those was Barbara Guggenheim. In 2002, she penned a memorable piece for W magazine about her love affair with Hermès. The piece has endured on the Internet as gospel for new generations of Hermès bag ladies. “The reason Barbara’s story resonates today as much as it did back in 2002 is the fact that an Hermès bag says you have arrived,” Tonello says. “To this day, it’s how a woman says to other women they have arrived. Like Italian sports cars and Patek Philippe watches are to men, these are for women.” In the years since the article was published, Guggenheim’s collection of Hermès bags has grown to nearly 50— with no end in sight. “I noticed them very early,” says Guggenheim, a partner at Guggenheim Asher, an art consulting firm with offices in Beverly Hills and New York. “I became aware of them when I came to New York for school. I had a friend who ‘knew things’ and one of the things she knew all about was Hermès bags. I thought they were very chic, but somewhat remote. I’m from Philadelphia, so of course, Grace Kelly was a style icon for me, and I associated Hermès bags with her, and people like her: very worldly and sophisticated. They belonged
Hermès 32cm Shiny Bleu Saphir Alligator Kelly with Gold Hardware sold at auction for $47,800 in December 2010. to a very different world for a grad student.” Still, the seeds of obsession were planted. A few years later, Guggenheim acquired her first Hermès bag: a poignant legacy from a dying friend. A former fashion model, the woman bestowed the Hermès on her friend while she could still enjoy Guggenheim’s pleasure in receiving the gift. Guggenheim still has that bag.

When Aluminum Was More Valuable Than Gold by Mike McLeod Hard to believe today, but aluminum was valued at $1,200 per kilo1 or about $34 per ounce in 1853. At that time, gold sold for only about $19 per ounce. To put this into greater perspective, in 1851, a carpenter earned $7.50 per week 2 and would have to work about a month to afford one ounce of aluminum. A weaver made about $1.40 per day—working a 65-hour week—and would have had to work about 25 days to afford an ounce of aluminum. Imagine taking a few bags of aluminum soda cans back in time to 1853. Weighing about half an ounce each, you could sell one can to be made into jewelry for about $537 in today’s money. More valuable than gold in the mid-1800s, aluminum was actually made into high-priced jewelry then. Why was this soda-can metal so valuable then? Aluminum is not a naturally-occurring metal in the earth, but aluminum oxide, or alumina, is plentiful. However, an easy way to extract aluminum from alumina was unknown at that time. That is, until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall (Dec. 6,
1863–Dec. 27, 1914) at the age of 22 discovered that passing electricity through alumina dissolved in cryolite (sodium hexafluoroaluminate) caused the distillation of aluminum. In France at about the same time, Paul Héroult discovered the same process. In the coming years, Hall went on to found the Aluminum Corporation of America which later became known as ALCOA. A few years later, bauxite was found to be a better source for refining aluminum. Hall adapted, and aluminum made him rich, even though the price of the shiny metal later plummeted as it became easier to refine. Today, we all know it is worth but pennies for an ounce. Even so, aluminum still finds its way into jewelry—but usually not in the expensive kind. Charles Hall never married nor had children. During his life and at his passing, he donated his wealth to charities and education institutions. Now, when you drink from an aluminum can, you can imagine it being worth hundreds of dollars in 1853.

“I think there is something about a bag,” Guggenheim muses. “You carry it out into the world and everybody sees it, but what you keep inside of it, the secret part of you, is still a mystery.” Guggenheim talked to The Intelligent Collector magazine about her collection during a lengthy interview at her Los Angeles home. What is the appeal of Hermès handbags? There is no age to Hermès. You can be 20 years old, you can be 80 years old, and the bag will still look right, although younger people are more likely to be interested in the off-beat colors like fuchsia, while my generation wants the black, navy blue, camel—the classic neutrals. Hermès bags are beautifully made, and they age beautifully, developing a gorgeous patina over time. You can spend a huge amount of money on a Coach bag or a Louis Vuitton, and it will last for a season. An Hermès bag will last a lifetime. Do you have a favorite style? The Birkin is the most popular, but I’m trending away from it and towards the Kelly, but I love all the styles. I have quite a few clutches, too. Hermès Extraordinary Collection 18cm Diamond Blue Jean Porosus Crocodile Double-Gusset Constance Bag with 18K White Gold Hardware realized $50,000 at an April 2013 Heritage auction.
Tell me about the first Hermès bag you bought for yourself. I was on vacation with my husband in Mexico. I think it was in 1993. We saw a news story on television at 7:30 in the morning that said that the peso has been devalued. I said, “I’ve got to go to Hermès!’ I got to the boutique just after 9 and waited for them to open. I bought four, all Kelly bags. It was a little difficult to explain to the custom officials—my husband is a lawyer, so I am always very conscientious about filling out customs forms. At first, they didn’t believe that we’d spent so much on handbags, so they called over their supervisors and had a huge consultation over it! Where do you find your bags? I buy them at Hermès. I would buy from a reputable auction house, but I wouldn’t buy on eBay. Merchandise is only as good and reliable as the dealer who sells it. There are two flea market stalls in Paris that sell Hermès bags. I’ve worked with them for years. They really know what they are doing, and I really trust them. You have to know and trust your dealer when you’re buying on the secondary market. Are counterfeits a problem? Absolutely! There are appraisers who specialize in identifying fakes. Counterfeits are everywhere, and some of them are such accurate copies that it takes an expert to identify them. That’s why it’s essential to know what you’re buying and who your dealer is. Do you put your collection on display in your home? Not really. I wear them. They are a part of my wardrobe, not art objects. But they do have their own separate rider on our insurance policy. We weren’t sure our homeowners’ policy covered them, and I wanted to make sure they were properly protected. What is the appeal of vintage bags? When I was young, “vintage” meant that something was 50 years old. Now, it means it’s four years old! I like the patina of wear, the way the bag has been used and cared for, the way it has aged. Hermès bags develop a unique personality and become more singular over time. Because they are so wellmade, time just burnishes them and signs of wear are just added character.

The “waiting list” for a new Hermès bag is notorious. How do you navigate it? You have to cultivate relationships, get to know the manager at Hermès and the sales staff. I visit the Beverly Hills store every week. When I am in another city with an Hermès boutique, I stop in to investigate. I enjoy the hunt. I have preferences. In Paris, I think the Georges V store is actually better than the flagship on rue du Faubourg. There is also my informal network of fellow travelers—friends who love Hermès and keep an eye out for themselves and their pals and pass on the latest information: “There’s a gray ostrich Birkin in St. Bart’s!” or “I saw the red alligator you like in New York.” We know each other’s tastes and call or text when we spot a great find. Is there “one that got away”? I saw an all-black one once. Very rare. There were only two or three of them in the whole country, but it was a Kelly, and not really for me, I thought at the time, so I called a friend about it. She bought the bag, and now I regret it. I don’t have any other major misfires, though. I regret letting a 40cm taupe Birkin go because I already had a 35cm. I should have sold the 35 and bought the 40. Thirty-five is the “lady who lunches” bag, but a 40 can be used as a briefcase. There’s enough room for my files as well as my makeup and stuff, and it’s much more chic than an attaché case. What do you find most rewarding about your collection? I don’t think of it as a collection. I buy what I want to wear and enjoy. You don’t consciously start collecting anything. You buy a couple of things because you love them, and then you buy a few more, and then you find you now have several, and suddenly, it’s become a collection.
Hermès Allure Grace Kelly, Jane Birkin Forever Linked to ‘Flawless’ Bags Jane Birkin. (Photo, Roland Godefroy.)
Each Hermès bag is meticulously handcrafted by artisans who have studied for four years at one of Paris’ arts and crafts schools before beginning the lengthy apprenticeship at Hermès that leads to a spot on the company’s workbench. Production proceeds at a stately pace, with each individual bag taking up to 19 hours of painstaking work to complete, says Diane D’Amato, Director of Luxury Accessories at Heritage Auctions. Each bag must be flawless. Any piece deemed defective is promptly destroyed. There are no Hermès factory seconds. This labor-intensive process contributes to the maddening scarcity of the handbags. The company does not release figures on how many bags are produced each year, but every season, every style and every new color creates such an avid demand that wait lists can be months or even years long. Over the years, two Hermès bags have become closely associated with the celebrities who carried them: -The Birkin Bag is named for actress and singer Jane Birkin (b.1946). According to fashion lore, the company’s chief executive created the bag in the 1980s after meeting Birkin on a flight from Paris to London in which she said it was difficult to find a bag she liked. -The Kelly Bag is named for Princess Grace Kelly (19291982) of Monaco, who was one of the world’s most famous style icons. Kelly was frequently photographed with a large, crocodile Hermès, and after the bag became a hit, it was renamed after the princess. Each of these handbags retails for between $5,000 and $300,000.

We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. 33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.
All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.
Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.
There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.
Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net

How Are These Famous People Related? by Mike McLeod
Napoleon Bonaparte
The true Charlie Chaplin.
What do Napoleon Bonaparte and Charlie Chaplin have in common? How about Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, John Lennon, and the Rolling Stones? Think about it for a moment. What could all these famous people from history, the movies, and music have in common? They weren’t born in the same year or on the same day or in the same place. They aren’t related to each other in the family way, at least not closely, as far as I can tell. They did not collect the same thing—if they were all collectors.

Marilyn Monroe Winston Churchill As you can tell, I am stalling to give you time to figure this out. Time’s up. What these two groups of people have in common is their signatures (on photos or letters) are valued at the same amount. According to Paul Fraser’s Autograph Index for 2014 (www. paulfrasercollectibles.com), Napoleon and Charlie Chaplin’s signatures are valued the same at £4,950, about $7,984. Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, John Lennon and the Rolling Stones are at £6,950 ($11,209). Also in a category all by themselves are Diana, Princess

of Wales, and Albert Einstein. Their signatures are valued at £8,950, or $14,435. Walt Disney and Martin Luther King are both worth £4,750 ($7,661). The signatures of Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali and the eccentric artist Salvador Dali (painter of limp clocks in The Persistence of Memory) could sell for £1,750 or $2,822. Off the top of your head, which should you pay more for, the signature of President John F. Kennedy or the actor James Dean? If you said Pres. Kennedy—sorry. You would be wrong by more than $16,000. Paul Fraser values James Dean’s signature on a photograph at £18,000 ($29,031) and

Pres. Kennedy’s at £7,750 ($12,500). What about Fidel Castro and Elvis Presley? The King was edged out by the dictator. (What are those autograph collectors thinking?) Fidel: £3,750 ($6,048); Elvis: £3,500 ($5,645). Whose autograph (on a photo) is more powerful: Vladimir Putin or Barack Obama? Putin: £100 ($161); Pres. Obama: £350 ($565). We’re No. 1! Finally, for you Royals watchers (not the baseball team), Prince William or Prince Harry? It is Prince William by a long shot. William £2,250 ($3,629); Harry: £500 ($806). As always, beware of forgeries when collecting signatures on photos, letters and so on. One other suggestion: carry a magnifying glass and look closely at old documents, photos and prints. A few years ago, Roger Kent, Associate Director of Western Illinois University Television, took a close look at a framed document that had been hanging as a decoration on the wall of his office for two years. Turns out, it bore the signature of Abraham Lincoln. The framed document had been sitting in a prop room for years before he picked it up as a decoration. In 2011, the document with Abraham Lincoln’s signature was valued at $15,000 to $20,000. --------------------Paul Fraser’s index is listed atwww.paulfrasercollectibles.com/ investing/pfc40-autograph-index/2757.page. If you have ever said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” or “Well begun is half done,” you were quoting the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Aristotle, whose name means “the best purpose,” was born in 384 B.C. in the village of Stagira in northeastern Greece. His father and mother died when he was young so he was raised by his sister and brother-in-law in his early years. Born into an aristocratic family, Aristotle was educated and then sent to Athens for further study at the feet of Plato. Under his tutelage, Aristotle gained great knowledge, but he did not always agree with his teacher. One difference in their philosophies was that Plato (and his teacher Socrates) believed in learning through idealism and thought (because perception can be deceptive) while Aristotle believed in learning through direct observation and experience. Consequently, Aristotle made many scientific observations and is considered one of the earliest scientists, if not the first. Records of his observations and scientific writings were rediscovered in the Middle Ages and were so monumental that they became gospel for the scientists of that day. Even Aristotle’s incorrect postulates were accepted as fact, such as his belief that the earth was the center of the universe. “There is no great genius without a mixture of madness.” Despite making errors as all scientists do, Aristotle discovered much scientific truth. He correctly identified the cycle of water from evaporation to condensation to precipitation. He is the first known person to create taxonomy for animals, classifying them as either bloodless (invertebrates) or blooded (vertebrates) and then defining five categories for each. Those with blood were: quadrupeds that give live birth; quadrupeds that lay legs; birds; fish; and whales. Among the bloodless he identified: insects (and incorrectly included arachnids); crustaceans (lobsters, crab, shrimp, etc.); creatures with shells; and plant-animals (anemones, coral, etc.)1 Aristotle’s depth of knowledge, breadth of observation and keen deductive reasoning in the fields of zoology, meteorology, earth sciences, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, ethics, political science are astounding. Aristotle left Athens after the death

of Plato. He traveled, studied and made many of his zoological and other observations during that time. A few years later, Phillip of Macedonia hired Aristotle to tutor his son Alexander (the Great) in Macedonia, north of Greece. After the assassination of Phillip by a bodyguard in 336 B.C., Alexander assumed command and was forced to put down many revolts in the lands his father conquered, including that of the independent city-state of Athens. However, Athens’ leaders changed their minds about their rebellion, perhaps after seeing Alexander’s successes against other rebels. (During his entire military career, Alexander the Great never lost a battle.) With Athens’ allegiance resolved, Aristotle returned from Macedonia and opened his own school on the outskirts of the city, calling it the Lyceum. He taught paying pupils there and gave free classes to the public for more than a decade.
Approximately a year after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C., Aristotle chose to leave Athens after being accused of impiety or heresy against the gods. This trumped-up charge was leveled against him due to his previous affiliation with the Macedonian overlord Alexander. This made him persona non grata with many Athenians. Rather than submit to being tried for this charge, Aristotle left Athens saying, “I will not allow the Athenians to sin twice against philosophy.” This was a reference to their forcing Socrates to drink hemlock, also for a charge of heresy.2 Aristotle relocated to Euboea, an island off the coast of Greece. There, he died in 322 B.C. of a digestive ailment not long after his arrival. He was about 62 years old. Aristotle was one of the world’s greatest thinkers, one of its earliest known scientists, an insightful philosopher and an acclaimed teacher. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle talked the talk and walked the walk. Or as some say today, “He walked his talk.” Rachel Ohtani and Ginny Richards of Old School Antique Mall in Sylva, N.C., the staff at the Georgia Visitor Information Center in Lavonia, Ga., and Ted Carlton of Utah correctly identified Aristotle. Ted Carlton also correctly identified J.R.R. Tolkien last month.

Name This Famous Antique by Mike McLeod
This antique is a Navy Medal of Honor that was used between 1911 and
1946, and it was made by Tiffany’s. Charles Lewis Tiffany was born on Feb. 5, 1812 in Connecticut, and his family owned a cotton mill. At the age of 25 and with $1,000 borrowed from his father, Tiffany and John Young opened a stationery store that also sold gifts. At first, business was slow, but in the

coming years, the partners expanded to sell the finest porcelain, glassware, silverware and jewelry. During the Civil War, Tiffany’s sold swords, flags, capes, kepi hats, surgical equipment, silver pistol grips and so on to their discriminating military clients.

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Tiffany’s and Its Founder 1. Tiffany’s created in 1845 America’s first retail sales catalog, the “Blue Book.” 2. Each year, Tiffany’s creates the Vince Lombardi Trophy which is awarded to the winner of the Super Bowl. It also creates NASCAR’s Sprint Cup trophy and has created two World Series rings. 3. Tiffany’s purchased a 287carat yellow diamond that was mined in 1879 and cut it to a 128-carat, cushion-shaped gem to make the Tiffany Yellow Diamond. Never sold, it has been displayed in the Smithsonian and worn by Audrey Hepburn to publicize the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The second largest yellow diamond in the world, it was originally purchased for $18,000 (about half a million dollars in today’s money); its value was set at $12 million in 1983.1 4. Tiffany’s became known as the “King of Diamonds”

after being one of the first to introduce that gem to the American market: “Tiffany's reign of diamonds began in 1848 with the abdication of King Louis-Philippe of France and founder Charles Lewis Tiffany's purchase of diamonds from fleeing aristocrats.”2 Mrs. Joseph Pulitzer was one of the buyers of Tiffany’s royal diamonds. 5. Tiffany’s created the famous “NY” logo used by the New York Yankees baseball team starting in 1909; it was originally created for a police medal of honor in Charles Lewis Tiffany 1877. 6. Charles Lewis Tiffany worked with Thomas Edison in creating footlights for theaters. 7. Lady Bird Johnson hired Tiffany’s to create china service for the White House in 1964. 8. In the 1980s, Tiffany & Co. marketed its own perfume, Tiffany for Women, selling it for $220 per ounce. It later introduced Tiffany for Men. 9. Tiffany & Co. was purchased by Avon in 1984 for more than $100 million; it was later sold to an investment group and finally went public in 1987. 10. In 2008, Tiffany’s created ten cell phones covered with diamonds that sold for about $1 million each. Charles Lewis Tiffany died on Feb. 18, 1902. His legacy spans the globe with stores in Williamsburg.06.11_SEA dozens of countries and a name

Obsessed with Hermès Continued from Page 11 With your story for W magazine still appearing on the Internet, do you feel like an Hermès guru, a spokeswoman for people attracted to the magical aspect of Hermès handbags? I’m sure there are more people with more bags. When my article for W was first published, I received incredible responses, good and bad. One lady said, “Thanks a lot. After reading your story, I had to run out to Hermès. You cost me $8,000.” Another lady said she felt the same way about her Coach bag. People have a real connection with their pocketbooks. There’s something about a woman’s purse that’s very secretive and personal. No man goes into a woman’s purse. I take my pocketbook with me to bed every night. What’s your advice for fledging Hermès collectors? You have to approach it like anything else: learn about them,
learn to appreciate them, what makes them special, and know what you’re paying for, just like buying art. Haunt the stores and the auction houses. Don’t go the safe route and buy a black bag. You’ll have more fun with one of the colors. After you’ve done your homework, buy what you love because you love it. I have to ask. Are you related to Peggy Guggenheim, socialite and niece of philanthropist Solomon R. Guggenheim? No! If I were, I’d own a lot more Hermès bags! ------------------Lynn Morgan is a Los Angeles journalist who writes for The Intelligent Collector magazine. Aladdin Lamp Collectors Holding 26th Annual Gathering July 22-25 in Nashville, Tenn. Aladdin Knights and collectors who prize old lamps will hold their annual Gathering (convention), July 22-25 at the Airport Marriott Hotel in Nashville. The Gathering is sponsored by The National Association of Aladdin Lamp Collectors (www.aladdincollectors.org). Events begin Tuesday and conclude with a Saturday banquet. More than 500 people are expected. Joe DeMatteo and Bill Courter are the General Knights (hosts) who plan and organize Gathering events. Calling themselves Aladdin Knights, the group is America's largest club of antique lamp collectors. Knights collect Aladdin kerosene incandescent lamps and Aladdin electric lamps as well as other brands. The following clubs are invited to attend: The Rushlight Club (www.rushlight.org), the oldest lighting club in America; The Night Light Club (www.nightlightclub.org), collectors of miniature lamps; International Coleman Collectors Club (www. intlccc.net); and The Historical Lighting Society of Canada (www.historical-lighting.on.ca). Collectors and students of antique lighting attend to learn the history of lighting from rushlights and whale oil to the discovery of new fuels and technology in lamp improvements. Gathering events include seminars, a display room of rare and unusual lamps, an auction, a raffle, a banquet and the huge Lamp Show & Sale. The “Ladies of the Knights” donate their time and talents to make a beautiful, handmade quilt that a lucky member will win at the annual banquet.
The 26th Antique Lamp Show & Sale opens to registered members on Friday and to the public on Saturday. World-class dealers will offer a variety of antique lighting and accessories. Lamps of all kinds include colored pattern oil lamps, GoneWith-The-Wind, art glass lamps, opalescent lamps, miniature lamps, student lamps, finger lamps, Victorian hanging fixtures, floor lamps, center-draft lamps, early electric lamps and worldfamous Aladdin Deco style figurines. Aladdin lamps have provided light for more than 100 years. The amazing 100-year-old technology still works today. Coal-oil or kerosene lighting is often “mystic” to those who are too young to have experienced the warm glow that illuminated homes in years past. Collectors restore and light the old lamps that were essential for our parents and grandparents. The public is invited to the 26th International Lamp Show & Sale on Friday from 2-6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9-3. There is a nominal admission fee. For more information, visit www.aladdincollectors.org or contact Joe DeMatteo at 2170 Post Rd., Clarksville, TN 37043 or e-mail him at demattel@ bellsouth.net.
