September 2, 1973: J.R.R. Tolkien passed away, but his tales live on. Though he did not live to see it, all of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies have raked in $5.89 billion to date with production costs of about $1 billion (the-numbers. com). A presentation copy of The Hobbit inscribed and signed by Tolkien commanded £137,000 at Sotheby’s in 2015. Gollum’s “Precious,” aka “The One Ring,” the penultimate prototype gold ring slipped away for $12,800 at Julien’s Auctions in 2013. Other prototypes of the ring in gold and silver were also made. John “Gimli” Rhys-Davies’ doubleheaded battle axe sold for $185,000 at the same auction. September 4: In 1886, Geronimo surrendered and was a prisoner for the rest of his life. Even so, he was invited to be a part of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. An 1886 Winchester owned by Army Captain Henry W. Lawton, who led the cavalry troopers in the capture of Geronimo, sold for $1,265,000 at Rock Island Auction in 2016. It was the highest paid to date for a firearm at auction. In 2007, Geronimo’s U.S. Model 1870 Springfield rifle went for $99,450 at Bonhams. Geronimo holding his Springfield

September 4, 1893: Beatrix Potter told the story of Peter Rabbit for the first time in a letter she illustrated. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was turned down by several publishers, so Beatrix Potter had it published herself in 1901. One of the initial 250, a first edition, first issue with a brown cover, sold for $75,000 in 2014 at Sotheby’s. In 1950, Mort Walker’s GI goof-off Beetle Bailey began life in syndication, where he still gets into trouble today. September 6, 1622: The Spanish galleons Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita sank near Key West, Fla., in a hurricane. On July 20, 1985, the $450 million Atocha Mother Lode treasure was found by Mel Fisher—40+ tons of silver in addition to gold and emeralds (melfisher.com). She began painting at the age of 78 and became the famous folk artist Grandma Moses. In 2006, her 1943 Sugaring Off, a snowy landscape painting of making maple syrup, sold for $1.36 million. A smaller version of Sugaring Off went for $254,500 in 2010, both at Christie’s.

September 8: In 1998, Mark McGwire hit home run #70 to break the record for the most home runs in a season. That ball went over the fence at Guernsey’s for $3 million in 1999. McGwire’s record was broken in 2001 by Barry Bonds who hit 73. In 1504, Michelangelo hit an artistic grand slam when he unveiled his priceless, 17-foot-tall marble masterpiece, David. September 11, 1297: William Wallace’s men defeated an English army at Stirling Bridge, Scotland. In 2001, Mel Gibson’s 52-inch sword used in Braveheart brought down $170,000 for charity at Sotheby’s. September 12, 1857: The wooden side-wheeler steamship SS Central America sank in a hurricane off North Carolina, taking more than 400 people to the bottom—along with tons of gold (estimates range from three to 20 tons). The largest ingot retrieved from the ocean floor weighed 80 pounds; it was called “Eureka” for its size and because it came from the California gold fields. Eureka sold for $8 million in 2001 to a private buyer (sfgate.com, 11/9/01). September 14, 1914: The Lone Ranger Clayton Moore was born. While most remember him for his 169 episodes in the TV series, he also acted in 40+ movies (imdb.com). In 2014, his outfit (gun belt, Colts, blue shirt, pants, Stetson hat, boots and red kerchief) said, “Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!” and rode off for $195,000 from A&S The Lone Ranger and Silver

Auction Co. in Waco, Texas. One of his masks, his gloves and Tonto’s headband sold for $12,000 at Profiles in History in 2010. September 16, 1956: David Copperfield magically appeared. His International Museum and Library of Conjuring Arts contains 80,000 pieces, including books dating to the 16th century and much of Harry Houdini’s memorabilia (davidcopperfield.com). Copperfield owned the Best Director Oscar for Casablanca for a time, buying it in 2003 for $232,000. He sold it in 2012 for $2+ million (deadline.com, 4/3/13). September 17, 1796: President George Washington’s Farewell Address, saying he would not seek a third term, was published in a newspaper, not given in a speech (U.S. Dept. of State, Office of Historian). A 19-page pamphlet imprint titled, “President Washington’s Resignation, and Address To The Citizens of the United States, September 17, 1796,” auctioned for $3,500 at Heritage Auctions in 2014. Also that year, Keno Auctions brokered the sale of Washington’s first presidential Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1789, to a private buyer. It was offered for $8.4 million. September 20, 1934: Don Quixote’s Dulcinea was born in Rome. Sophia Loren has more than 90 film credits, and she has won four Golden Globes and an Academy Award (for Two Women, not Man of La Mancha). A purple Georgia Armani purse she once owned sold in a 2011 charity auction to help Siberian children for $287,000 (yahoo.com/news, 11/30/11). Continued on page 6

September 22, 2015: The all-around great guy Yogi Berra passed away. In 2016, his 1950s New York Yankees, game-used and autographed catcher’s mask made $29,586 at Grey Flannel Auctions. In 2013, his 1955 American League MVP plaque hit $36,098.50 at Goldin Auctions. Yogi’s 1948 Bowman #6 SGC mint 96 rookie card sold for $3,883.75 in 2006 at Heritage Auctions, and in 2008, a PSA mint 9 of it auctioned for $8,287 at SCP Auctions. Yogi was famous for his sayings. September 27, 1956: Super athlete Mildred E. “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias passed away. She had 41 LPGA tour wins and won two gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Olympics. Baseball, softball, basketball, diving, bowling— she did it all. Her golf bag and 14 clubs hit $31,250 at Nate D. Sanders auction in 2014.

September 30, 1955: Rising star James Dean did not survive a car accident. In his short five-year film career, he acted in 31 movies, won two Golden Globes and received two Academy Award nominations, posthumously (imdb.com). A white t-shirt James Dean wore in Rebel Without a Cause sold for $11,352.50 at Heritage Auctions in 2006. September 30, 2015: George Reeves’ Superman costume from the second season (the last in black and white) sold for $216,000 at Profiles in History. The other Babe September 28, 1987: Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered, and in 2006, a replica of the Starship Enterprise-D from the show conquered $576,000 at Christie’s. September 29, 1547: Coincidentally, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born the same month as Sophia Loren. His novel, The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha, has been hailed as among the best in Spanish literature, and 500+ million copies of it have sold. A third authorized edition from 1605 (authorized because there were knockoffs in those days, too) sold for $116,500 in 2012 at Christie’s. Earlier in life, Cervantes was captured by pirates at the beginning of his military career and kept in prison for about five years until ransomed. September 29, 1935: The Killer was born. Jerry Lee Lewis had many hits, including “Great Balls of Fire,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” and the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.” In 2015, his 1959 Harley-Davidson FLH Duo-Glide sold for $385,000 at Mecum Auctions (money.cnn.com, 1/24/15). Lab model for Sputnik, $269,000, Bonhams The full-scale lab model of the Sputnik capsule that started the Space Race sold for $269,000 at a Space History Sale held July 20 by Bonhams in New York City. Also, an Apollo 11 emblem, signed by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins rocketed to $110,000; a group of 15 goldcolored plaster casts of NASA astronauts’ hands, cast in 1967, soared to $155,000; and a flown space suit worn by Don Pettit on his dramatic return to Earth after the Space Shuttle disaster in 2003 hit $62,500. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium. 1949 Coca-Cola painting, $53,680, Morphy Auctions A circa-1949 Coca-Cola original oil painting featuring Edgar Bergen and his ventriloquist doll Charlie McCarthy sold for $53,680 at a Premier Antique Advertising Auction held May 21-22 by Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pa. Name This Famous (Almost) Antique

Obviously, this is the movie poster for London After Midnight; it says so right on the poster. But why is this movie poster so special? To date, it holds the record for the highest amount paid for a movie poster in a public auction—$478,000. It was sold at Heritage Auctions in 2014. To add to this poster’s rarity, the only known copy of this silent movie made in 1927 starring Lon Chaney as a vampire was lost in an MGM movie vault fire on May 13, 1967. An electrical fire ignited London After Midnight the nitrate on the films stored (Photo courtesy of Heritage there, and many old movies Auctions, HA.com) were lost. The movie was reconstructed by Rick Schmidlin, a film preservationist and producer-director, using movie stills and photos taken for continuity during the filming. Even with only the still-photo movie left, Lon Chaney’s character comes through, and his performance was actually used as a defense in a murder trial. A man who murdered a woman in London said he experienced temporary insanity when he said he saw Lon Chaney as the vampire standing in a corner speaking to him. Needless to say, the man was found guilty of the crime.1 This full-color, stone lithographed one-sheet poster was one of two versions released, but it is the only known copy of this version. Even though it was folded in eights and then folded again, it was still graded Very Fine+ and commanded the extraordinary price of $478,000. Lon Chaney was born on April 1, 1883 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He had 163 film credits during his acting career, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). He was also a writer, director and make-up artist. He was the make-up person for these movies and for London After Midnight, although he was uncredited for them2. His skill in acting and with make-up are reasons why Lon Chaney was known as “The Man of a Thousand Faces.”

Camille Tharaud (1878-1956) was one of the most noted ceramic artists of his time. His studio was located in Limoges, France, and his Art Deco works are the most highly valued. This is a low price for similar works by this artist. The lampe berger (pronounced lamp ber ZHAY) was invented for use in French hospitals in 1898. A catalytic converter was thought to destroy airborne bacteria as well as odors. These quickly became popular in homes. Coco Chanel was said to have used one to eliminate cooking odors. Today, these Lampe Berger are advertised to remove about 65% of allergens, mold and odors. All of this with the character clown Pierrot included!

A Victorian Lifestyle in the Modern World Continued from Center Gloss

Years ago, we started collecting everyday items from the past, things people like us were interacting with on a daily basis back in the Victorian era. We’ve never been privileged to keep company with monarchs and presidents in the modern world, so where history is concerned we’ve always been drawn far more strongly to people we can relate to ourselves. We love simple stories of approachable people. Using the things they used and adopting their routines help us connect with their culture. It’s not so very different from when I went to other countries to learn more about their cultures, although it’s been a more gradual and challenging process than stepping on a plane. Clothes from the past led us on the first steps of this journey. From collecting antique 19th century garments, we moved on to carefully trying them on and wearing them for special occasions. Clothes are incredibly intimate. They influence how we move, and at the same time record tiny details about us that seem too mundane to write down—things like whether the things in our pockets are light or heavy, or what we do with our hands when we don’t have pockets at all. When Gabriel and I realized how much the old garments were teaching us, we moved on to copying painstakingly accurate versions of them to wear every day. Now all our clothes are Victorian, copied from antiques in our collection or based on 19th century photographs and fashion plates. I sew all my own clothes by hand, and Gabriel’s are made for him by a seamstress in Seattle. Important as they were (and continue to be), our clothes were just the first step in our studies of the Victorian era. The next step was moving to a Victorian town: Port Townsend, Washington State. The city’s formative years were the very decades which fascinate us so much. Late 19th century architecture remains the dominant feature here, and Port Townsend is proud to be known as a Victorian seaport. Construction on our house began in 1888 and finished in 1889. In the 20th century, this middle-class, Eastlake-style building endured a long period of benign neglect. We bought it six years ago, and ever since we moved in, we’ve been slowly restoring it to the glorious functionality it boasted when it was new. Nearly everything in our house now is Victorian in nature. Many are original antiques. Some (such as the wicks which go into our antique oil lamps) are made by artisans who create extremely accurate replicas of items from the period. Others (like the Ivory soap I use to hand-wash our clothes and our dishes) are new examples of products which have been manufactured by the same companies since the 1800s. The artifacts which make up our home are a working collection. When we get our antiques, most are at a severe level of deterioration. Some people wouldn’t think twice

connect us to the technologies of our forebears: we’ve learned how much brighter circular wick lamps are than those with flat wicks, and we’ve been fascinated to see how much brighter antique lamps (which were made for use) are than modern replicas (often intended for mere ambiance). The electric lights in our house (mostly used for company) are all replicas of early light bulb patents, made from hand-blown glass. A few are Edison designs because people inevitably expect to see the Great Names of History represented. Really though, we prefer the hidden stories of the past: most of the light bulbs in our home are Westinghouse designs, based on the brilliant work of Nikola Tesla. each one, then add instructions regarding quantities and notes to make them easier to follow. I’m also working on a series of novellas set in the 1880s and ‘90s. All our firsthand experiences with the technologies and everyday items of the time provide incredibly valuable insights on which to build these works. Sewing in our parlor. However, its products do have this in common with early cycling: the mechanical technology is very advanced, yet it’s still technology which people can see and understand. Better yet, it’s technology which originated in our favorite period! I’ve never had a driver’s license, and my bicycle is from a company that has been making bikes with the same basic frame geometry since the 1890s. My bicycle serves the same function for me as most people’s “daily driver” car serves for them. It weighs 50 pounds, which would have been extremely heavy even by 1890s standards. Yet, I’ve covered hundreds of miles on it. It helps me do my errands (whether I’m riding a mere four or five miles around town, or 25twenty-five miles out and back to a farm stand), but I’ve ridden much farther on it as well. Longer rides ranged anywhere from 50 miles out and back to visit another Victorian town7, to 100 miles to see the flowers in bloom in America’s top tulip-producing county8, to an international ride up to Canada last year with Gabriel, who rode one of his high wheel bicycles. I have my own high wheel, an 1880s-style ladies’ tricycle which at around 75 pounds is even heavier than my bike. In the 1880s, there were women who managed to ride high wheel tricycles over the Alps, but the farthest I’ve managed on mine was a 75-five mile trip across the Idaho panhandle last year9. (Gabriel was on one of his high wheel bicycles again, of course.) Besides adding joy to our lives, bringing us closer together, and being extremely useful to my own writing, our first-hand experiences with everyday aspects of Victorian life are valuable to others as well. We’ve done consulting work for other writers, for film-makers, and for various researchers. We’ve given presentations to schools ranging from small elementarylevel homeschooling groups to large university classes. We do historical outreach all the time. As a way to engage others with the history we love, we curate a virtual museum of our

collection through a website and a Facebook page.10 Back when I was an International Studies student, spending time in other countries was a required part of learning about them. Obviously, one cannot begin to understand a culture until they have experienced it in context. Reading books about another country is like peering at it through a keyhole; traveling there is like walking through the door. We can’t travel to the past, but we can immerse ourselves in its details. By doing so, we attain an intimate knowledge of it which books alone can never supply. Some things can only be learned by experience repeated so often it becomes second nature. Like the different sounds a fire makes when it wants more fuel or air or when it can take care of itself without fussing. The reflexes involved with riding a fixed gear high wheel tricycle. How wearing long skirts can become an extra sense for experiencing the world, the way cats use their whiskers. Frasier Boyle, a Southern writer to whom Jefferson Davis bestowed the title of “poet laureate of the Confederacy” after the Civil War. The Great Seal of the Confederate States measures 3.5 inches in diameter and features George Washington in the center (modeled after the equestrian statue in Richmond), surrounded by a wreath of Confederate agricultural products (wheat, cotton, tobacco, corn, sugar and rice) and the text: “THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA: 22 FEBRUARY 1862” and “DEO VINDICE” around the exterior. Ordered by the CS government to serve as both a means to emboss documents and to lend themselves credibility as a government, the original Great Seal of the Confederacy was engraved in England and smuggled in-country via Bermuda, circa 1864. As the embossing machine never left Bermuda, the seal saw little use and was eventually smuggled out of Richmond by one William Bromwell, a disbursing clerk with the Confederate State Department, along with the contents of the State Department Archives. Nearly a decade later in 1872, Bromwell, by way of the former Confederate Commissioner to Mexico John T. Pickett, arranged for the sale of the Confederate Archive to the U.S. Government. At the close of the deal, Pickett gave the seal as a gift to Lieutenant (later Admiral) Thomas O. Selfridge, USN, the government representative for the transaction. A year later, Pickett borrowed the seal from Selfridge and took it to Samuel H. Black of New York who produced a series of electrotype copies in brass directly from the original seal, most examples being gold or silver-plated like yours. The seals were housed in photographic-style casings of gutta-percha or most commonly, paper-veneered wood of the type you would find in a tintype. Each seal was protected by a brass bezel and glass cover, which yours retains but with no case. These were sometimes sold with a folded facsimile letter from the London engraver, J.S. & A.B. Wyon, stating the seal was indeed made from the seal they produced for the Confederate Government in 1864. The seals are quite common in the market, and missing the case, it might bring about $1,000 as-is. What makes your grouping so compelling is that we know this particular seal belonged to Varina Davis because of this unique personal letter to her dated November 21, 1873 from W.S. Pickett. The letter recounts that Col. John T. Pickett of Washington sent to him in Memphis “…a number of medals, a facsimile impression of the great seal of the Southern Confederacy, the original being in his possession—to sell for the benefit of the Church Orphans Home. Some few men addressed for complementary distribution among them, one for you which I send herewith. My relation Col. P., you kindly receive this metal as a memory Continued on Page 30

C.S. Lewis is known worldwide for authoring the seven books in The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Screwtape Letters (in which a chief devil Screwtape advises his nephew Wormwood how to tempt people), The Great Divorce (people from Hell visit Heaven), and dozens of other books. A few things many may not know about C.S. Lewis include: *He took on himself the name of “Jacksie” as a very young child after his dog was killed by a car. He only responded to that name and then was called “Jacks” or “Jack” by his friends and family for the rest of his life. *At the age of nine, his mother Flora died. He was not close with his father. *At the age of 19 in WWI, he found himself on the frontlines in the trenches in France. He was wounded in three places by shrapnel from friendly fire, including a piece near his heart that was not removed until 1944. Two comrades were killed by the same British shell. *He and a friend Paddy Moore made a pact that if one were killed in the war, the other would support both families. C.S. Lewis fulfilled that promise to Paddy who was killed in WWI. *He was close friends with J.R.R. Tolkien. *He was elected a Fellow of Magdalen College, a constituent college of Oxford, and there he worked as a tutor in English and literature for nearly three decades. he was made its first professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature. *He made a vow to give away all the money he made on his books to Christian charitable causes, and he continued to keep that vow even as he struggled to pay his own bills. *He had nearly a photographic memory. *Lewis did not know how to drive a car or how to type. *He converted to atheism and then years later returned to a belief in God. He was a great defender of, speaker for, and writer about Christianity. *He was featured on the cover of Time magazine on Sept. 8, 1947 in a portrait painting. In the background was a horned devil figure holding a pitchfork and frowning at an angel figure that was only partially depicted with one white wing showing. *He married late in life at the age of 57, and he wife died about four years later from cancer. In 2015, the seven books of The Chronicles of Narnia, published 1950-1955 and with pristine dust jackets, sold for $38,298 at Sotheby’s. Lewis was very diligent about responding to his fan mail, and a letter from him to a fan dated 19 August 1945 auctioned for £4,600 in Gloucester, UK in 2014.1 Clive Staples Lewis was born on Nov. 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland, and died on Nov. 22, 1963 of kidney failure. Relatively few noted his passing because this was also the day that the President John F. Kennedy died. Scott Antique Market Debuts Fall Season with Sept. 8-11 Show By Tom O’Hara Don Scott was excited to discuss the coming Sept. 8-11 Scott Antique Market at his two huge pavilions, at the intersection of I-285 and Jonesboro Road. With local schools in sessions for a few weeks, he said the decorators, homeowners and collectors will all be ready to turn their attention to home décor, and so dealers will fill his show places to capacity with their collections. “This will be our 34th year in Atlanta, and we feel each year September begins a new season.” September marks the return of many Northern and Mid-western exhibiters that are unable to attend during the summer months but arrive with fresh stock for the shoppers who are decorators, designers and homeowners looking for new ideas in antiques, art and décor. Many of the shoppers will be buying for resale, and just as many are there getting the bargains for themselves. Many exhibitors from the Southeast have been shopping out of the region during the summer months, finding more period furniture and art for their inventories.

It Just Keeps Getting Better: The 59th Fishersville/Shenandoah Antiques Expo To paraphrase the unofficial motto of the U.S. Postal Service: neither rain, wind nor thunderstorms keep shoppers away from the Shenandoah Antiques Expo! In spite of some rather threatening stormy weather, the spring show was another great success for vendors and shoppers alike. The weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the thousands of antiques aficionados and treasurer hunters who attended. The exhibitors provided everything from 18th and 19th century English and American antiques, country Americana pieces, and many other quality antiques as well as an expansive range of intriguing, interesting and often hard-to-find collectibles. Dealers and shoppers alike went away with smiles that reflected success in their efforts, whether selling or treasure seeking. Now, as the summer heat diminishes and the fall approaches, Heritage Promotions is preparing for the 59th Shenandoah Antiques Expo to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-16 at the Augusta Expo (I-64, Exit 91) in Fishersville. This semi-annual event attracts more than 300 dealers and thousands of shoppers who often spend the weekend searching the exhibition halls, four barns, tents and open exhibits for that special treasure. Any help or direction you could provide would greatly be appreciated. The attached sheet was pulled down from Army records as my attempt to validate. JS: Your ancestor’s “dog tag” was an item he bought from a sutler (merchant) in camp. ID tags were not issued items. There are various designs in brass and pewter, and this “McClellan, War of 1861” was a popular choice among soldiers. The sutler selling it hand stamped the name, unit, city and state of Private Samuel Dickson, 100th Pennsylvania Infantry. Logbook of the Great Pyramid’s Construction on Display A 4,500-year-old logbook found in 2013 that records construction on the Great Pyramid of Giza is being exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, reported livescience.com.1 Written in hieroglyphics on papyri by an inspector by the name of Merer, it recorded the work of his team of about 200 men over several months. The logbook said the Great Pyramid was close to completion with the final phase being the adding of the limestone casing on the outside. It also noted that it took four days for the limestone to be shipped via the Nile from the quarry near today’s Cairo. The Great Pyramid of Giza was completed about 2560 B.C. for Pharaoh Khufu and is known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu’s Hellenized name). Of the more than 100 pyramids in Egypt, it is the oldest and largest and was originally 481 feet high—the largest manmade structure in the world for 3,800+ years until the Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, England, was completed in 1311. The only remaining example of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it is higher than the Statue of Liberty (151 feet) but lower than the Washington Monument (about 555 feet).
