Acknowledgments My first semester here at NID has been an exciting journey throughout. It was a magical blend between learn and play. All the courses that I was a part of were an amazing learning experience both in and outside the class. I would like to thank the institution for such a well planned and systematic curricullum, which allows us to gradually move from one thing to other. The division of assignments and how to deal with each one of them is different and interesting at the same time. I would like to thank Mr. Kaushik Chakroborty and Mr. Pravin Solanki for anchoring such a meticulous Fundemantals of Visual Design course. Looking at things and aesthetically judging them became all the more interesting with Ms. Vrushali Dhage’s Science and Liberal arts course. Design as a process became all the more clear as we tackled different products and spaces and their problems. All thanks to Mr. Vijai Singh Katiyar , Anupam Jain and Mr. Damodarswamy. Coming to Graphic Design as a student I would greatly thank Ms. Tridha Gajjar for welcoming us to the department and also taking the image making course. Another notable mention is Mr. Bharath Suthar and Mr. Akash Halankar without, and last but not the least Mr. Tarundeep Girdher who guided us through and through right from the start with introduction to design and moved to production process and typography, making the semester one of the most memorable ones.

U NI 1

The Introduction to Design module was for a period of 1 week. It was anchored by Mr. Tarundeep Girdhar and supported by numerous other prestigious people from the design world who I have talked about later. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 2 The Introduction to Design was the first module of the first semester which was anchored by Mr. Tarundeep Girdhar. The course extended for a period of one week which included lectures and assignments. Prestigious people from the design world had come to deliver the lectures, they shared their work with us and told us what design is to them and how design works and talks. Their wise words cleared the shadow of doubt looming over what is design. Design is difficult to define as it is an individualistic perception about how to solve a problem, communicate and many other reasons for its existence. We understood how design is different from art as it deals with the users who we design for, it involves a process to come up with the best possible solution. The various lectures given to us during the course talked about design thinking. Design is both the act and outcome of an unique and intentional approach to things. It can be approached from both ends. The complex fuzzy end of the ‘problem state’ and seemingly innocent end of creating a product. Both the journeys can help us find the structure of th problem state and bring about a significant transformation. We then witnessed three documentary by Gary Huswit called ‘helvetica’ , ‘urbanized’ and ‘objectified’. The following people had delivered the lectures: Mr. Ashoke Chatterjee Mr. Suresh Sethi Ms. Nilima Hasija Mr. E. Suresh Mr. Dinesh Korjan Mr. Amit Krishan Gulati Mr.Praveen Nahar Mr. Rahesh Dahiya

A S S IG N M E N T : After the week filled with a lot of learning and experience we were given an assignment to design a poster representing what is design to us. The second assignment that we were given was to take up a product which is made in India and show why we like it through another poster.

UNI 3 Design to me is every little thing that surrounds us, natural or man made. It needs no boundaries or walls. The sketch for the poster and the final poster.

UNI 4

The product chosen for the poster was Boroline antiseptic creme. The reason to select the particular product is because I am very familiar to the product and have seen it being used extensively. The beauty about it is that the product meets both the traditional and modern aspects alike. It has been a part of the Indian household for a long time because of its multi usage properties.

Design manages to surprise me every time.

FUNDAMENTALS

UNI 6

Fundamentals of visual design as a course extended for 6 weeks comprising of Drawing, Coloring and Composition. The course was anchored by Mr. Kaushik Chakraborty and Mr. Praveensinh Solanki. The separate courses were taken by our group specific teachers.

UNI 8

The drawing module was for a period of 2 weeks. It was headed by Mr. Anjani. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 9 The Drawing module of Fundamentals of Visual Design Course extended for 2 weeks. It was a gradual progression of hand drawn exercises which started with basic lines moving on to shapes and structures. We worked on perspective sketches (one point and two point respectively). We then moved on to nature study which was followed by human study focusing on postures and gestures. The course throughly improved our drawing skills helping us to get our perspectives right.

A line, another line, yet another line. The course started with drawing of straight lines without the help of any drawing instruments and draw several lines trying to keep them parallel to each other and then compare it with the lines created digitally keeping the same distance between two lines.

We then moved to understanding how to represent a three dimensional effect using light and shade.

UNI 16

The color module was for a period of 2 weeks. It was headed by Mrs. Navdeep. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 17 The Color module of Fundamentals of Visual Design Course extended for 2 weeks. It was a gradual progression of understanding of color psychology through lectures and assignments simultaneously. We started with understanding the importance of color in the associations they have with different cultures. We then moved to understanding the different kinds of color wheels( high chroma, tints and saturation). We scavenged natural and handmade materials to form the respective color wheels and doing that we understood that how a natural color differs from the ones produced chemically. We moved to the color relations after that, analogous, complimentary and split complimentary. We tried to form simple shaped compositions to denote an emotion. We also worked on understanding different color theories based on color interactions. All in all the course gave us a clear enough knowledge on how important a role color plays in almost every creation of ours.

Analogous Colors: Analogous colors are groups of three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, with one being the dominant color, which tends to be a primary or secondary color, and one on either side of the color. Red, red-orange, and redviolet are examples.

Complimentary Colors: Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined, cancel each other out. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those particular two colors. Due to this striking color clash, the term opposite colors is often considered more appropriate than “complementary colors”.

Split Complimentary Colors: The split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two “Analogous” colors adjacent to its complement. Split-complementary color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme, but has less pressure.

COMPOSITION

UNI 24

The composition module was for a period of 2 weeks. It was headed by Mr.Pradip Patil. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 25 The Composition module of Fundamentals of Visual Design Course extended for 2 weeks. It was a combination of both color and a drawing module and it helped us understand how we can cohesively work with both of it to create a balanced output or a composition. We understand the Gestalts Principles and how they appear in almost everything that we see in our everyday world. We represented all the Gestalts principles using everyday objects. We than moved to a three dimensional understanding of a composition using simple forms and shapes. The final Assignment of the module was a Group Skit which involved the understanding and representation of a composition in a real life theatrical performance.

A Composition created using Simple shapes, here repeated circles are arranged to show the term Digital. The aspect of discontinuity is taken into consideration for the composition.

GESTALTS PRINCIPLES Gestalt is a psychology term which means “unified whole. It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied.

UNI 29

THE SKIT The faculty team introduced a short play/skit as the final assignment of ‘Composition’ module of ‘Fundamentals of Visual Design’ course where students were be involved in meaning making when composing a wide range of objects as elements of design to narrate a story on the theme - ‘Habit’. There were around 20 students from M.Des. 2015 batch in each group and all group members were to be intensely involved like Conceptualisation, Writing the Script, Set Design, Acting, Music, Costume Design, Logistics, Promotion (Logo/Poster Design, Installation etc.), Documentation (Still and Video) etc. providing plenty of opportunity to interact with each other, get acquainted with the NID’s systems and people, in a meaningful multi disciplinary activity. There were three restrictionsNo dialogue in the play (use of music accepted) No expensive light effects No print outs (everything should be hand drawn, hand painted and hand made). The Group: Akash Agarwal ( Textile Design) Anurag Das (Graphic Design) Arun Chanchal (Graphic Design) Ananth Krishnan (Product Design) Anushka Rani ( Textile Design) Akanksha Priya (Textile Design) Abhilash Nair (Animation and Film Design) Akshay Chandekar (Furniture and Interior Design) Akash Khandelwal (Film and Video Communication) Ashish Anand (Furniture and Interior Design) Anshuman Kumar (Product Design) Alok Rajput (Film and Video Communication) Ankita Thakur (Graphic Design) Divya Chaudhri (Ceramic and Glass Design) Chinmay Kher (Animation and Film Design) Debashish Mondol (Ceramic and Glass Design) Asvino Singvi (Animatation and Film Design) Anshul Goyal ( Furniture and Interior Design) Aditya Patil ( Product Design)

UNI 30 Le Aaa ( vernacular, Hindi: Bring it on) The group name was decided based on the colloquial phrase of bring it on, it was to show the enthusiasm and the feeling of competitiveness and it also used the hindi ‘A’ or ‘Aa’ as our groups mainly consisted of people with the initials of their name being the letter A.

UNI 31

The Script ( Mein ya Hum ) The faculty team introduced a short play/skit as the final The script was created after hours of discussion and ideation with both faculty members and group members alike. It started with each group member coming up with a concept for the script, after discussing the concepts a final concept would be decided. After the discussions of individual concepts mine and my co member Akash Khandelwal’s script was selected and we were to merge both of them to form a single script. So the story is about this individual ( here our protagonist i.e. Arun Chanchal) and his six habits ( played by other members). The story revolves around his life and his everyday habits and how they are existent and move along with him, almost a part of his personality. So among these six habits there is a bigger habit that overshadows over the others and often takes over this individual’s mind hindering him to reach his goals. So after an instance in the play the protagonist is in this turmoil of emotions and starts to question his habits and realizes that he can make do without the bigger bad habit, but the bad habit is too strong to give away and thus he is in this mental conflict which divides him into two parts of him, one ruled by the bigger bad habit and the other by his other five usual habits. Then the protagonist tries to jump to get a higher reaching goal using these habits as a support. Both of the halves of the individual tries hand in hand but the better half succeeds and thus unifies with the protagonist thus killing the bad habit.

UNI 32

Promotional Activities

The promotional activities included posters, installations, self promotion and many more.

UNI 33

Rehearsals

The initial rehearsals took place at the old canteen followed by the final stage practices at the amphitheater.

UNI 34

My Contribution My contribution to the whole skit was to coming up with the script and visualize the entire composition and how it should look like on stage. I was partnered by Akash Khadelwal ( FVC ) in directing the entire skit. I also worked on the posters along with the promotional team of 4 other members. I also worked on the two installations that we put up along with Akshay Chandekar ( FID ). I helped in the controlling of the stage lights while it was playing. The whole two weeks of the play was one of the most rigorous and fun filled experiences of the entire module of fundamentals of visual design. It helped me understand how design lies in working with people collectively and how important a role co ordination plays in putting up an amazing show. The two weeks of the play made me wiser and more open to ideas and how others think and perceive, its not to judge if they are right or wrong but to analyze it with a practical mind and come up with the best solution possible. This was also the first time we performed in front of the entire NID community which was pretty much of a moment to remember. All in all in was a great learning experience which I will definitely try to carry forward in everything that I do.

We came, We performed, We entertained, We experienced. Le Aa firse!

UNI 36

The Science and Liberal Arts module was for a period of 1 week. It was headed by Mrs. Vrushali Dhage. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 35 The Science and Liberal Arts Course extended for one week. It was anchored by Ms. Shilpa Das and our course faculty was Ms. Vrushali Dhage. The course made us understand the subject of aesthetics in context of art and culture. We dealt with both Western and Indian contexts respectively. The course familiarized us the various philosophies of viewing and perceiving things. We studied about Plato’s realism, Aristotle’s empiricism and Longinus’s sublimity. We came across terms like ‘ universals’ ,’mimesis’ , ‘neota’ and many more. We studied on why these theories were rejected and accepted by different classes of philosophers and people alike. We then moved on to modernism and how religious beliefs were given up on and self consciousness and irony crept into literary and social traditions. Modernist philosophies disregarded realism and made use of the past work to improvise, rewrite and recreate. We studied the works of Immanuel Kant, Pablo Picasso. We then moved onto post modernist aesthetics. It started in the late 20th century and has skeptical interpretations of culture, literature, philosophy and literary works. The reevaluation of western ideal and emerge of popular culture are all categorized as post modernity. We studied about deconstructions as a post modernist philosophy by Jacques Derrida. Post modernists believed that there are no truths and only interpretations. After dealing with the Western philosophies and aesthetics we moved into Indian Aesthetics. Under Indian Aesthetics we studied about Rasa theory. We also understood the Natyashastra. We studied about rasas in performing arts or rasa abhinaya. We also studied about the Alamkara theory. We worked on two assignments during the course, one of which was a group and the second an individual assignment. The first assignment was to take a musical piece and show relevant pictures that represent the feel of the music being played. The second assignment was to take any example under art, literary or performing art and show any aspect of understanding aesthetics or philosophies studied in the course.

now I’ll take more time to judge if something is actually aesthetically appealing or not.

UNI 36

Music Album and album art covers reflecting the social, cultural and polical state of the world during their time. For this assignment I had taken up three albums by the English rock band Pink Floyd. The three albums were Animals (1977) The Wall (1979) and Division Bell (1994).

Animals

Division Bell

To start with the album Animals, It was the tenth album by the band and was released in the year 1977. It talks about the socio political conditions of the late 1970s Britain. It described the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of mere animals. The album is said to have been inspired by George Orwell’s famous book, ‘ Animal Farm’. It describes various classes of the society as different kinds of animals namely into the despotic ruthless pigs or the higher class, the combative dogs or the middle class and the mindless and unquestioning sheep being the lower class. The second album that I talked about is The Wall. It is the eleventh studio album. The album explores themes of isolation and self abandonment. It talks about this character called Pink who is modeled

The Wall

under Roger Waters and Syd Barett. He loses his father due to the second world war and his mother is over protective about everything that he does. It talks about the torments of bad schooling and a marriage breakdown. He eventually self isolates himself from the society which is created by a metaphorical wall, and the traumas became the bricks of the wall. Now when Pink decides to come back to reality he can’t because the wall closes down on him. The third album that I talked on was Division Bell Division Bell was the 14th studio album released in the year 1994. It talks about the importance of communication in modern world and how it keeps us connected. The album also talks about how communication has influenced a lot of things.

PROCESS

UNI 38

The Production Process module was for a period of 2 weeks. It was anchored by Mr. Tarundeep Girdher and our course faculty was Mr. Bharath Suthar. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 39 The Production Process course extended for a period of 2 weeks. It was anchored by Mr. Tarundeep Girdher and was supported by Mr. Bharath Suthar. The course proceeded gradually from the history of printing to the conventional and non conventional methods of printing. We learnt about offset printing, screen printing, gravure printing, etc. We studied about pre and post processing. We were shown various examples of the types of printing that happen. We studied about color, the way color is printed. Then we moved to paper and the types of paper according to the grain size and direction. The course also included an industry visit to see commercial offset printing taking place. We then learnt about the types of binding that exists and then we bounded our own notebooks to understand it better. The assignments that we did included making of a poster which was to printed via screen printing and offset printing simultaneously.

UNI 40

Types of Printing We studied printing under of two types, conventional and non-conventional printing. Under conventional printing we have studied about screen printing, linotype, letter press priniting, gravure printing, flexogrpahy and offset printing. Under non conventional methods we studied xeroxography, electrophotography and collotype printing.

Color Under color we studied the RGB and CMYK color model. We studied about spot colors and hexachorome printing. We also learnt about color separation and desktop publishing. We were also taught colorbars and registration marks.

Binding Under binding we learnt about the different kinds of binding that is used like wire stitching, perfect binding, spiral binding and side sewn binding.

UNI 45 The Design Process module was carried on for a period of two weeks. It was anchored by Mr. Vijai Singh Katiyar and was supported by two other visiting faculties, Mr. Anupam Jain and Mr. Sudhakar Damadaraswamy respectively. This course gave us an overview of the process of design. design process and methods. The course was initially started with lectures and assignments simultanously. The entire M.Des batch was divided into groups of 8 members each and every group was given an assignment of taking a product and studying it, tangibly and intangibly and follow it with a presentation. The assignment continued further where we had to come up with the problems and opportunities regarding the prooduct and come up with propositions and a design brief and present it. The second assignment was keeping the same group together but now we were given a space in the city to study, and figure out its problems and come up with solutions and concepts under the three following grounds, 1. An easily implimentable solution 2. An innovative solution 3. A futuristic solution.

ASSIGNMENT 1 The product we selected for our study is an Indian Chai Glass. We presented our research in a narrative manner where we show its origin, how it is processed, its ergonomics, why is it preferred over other utensils to serve tea.

UNI 47 We now moved to the second part of the assignment where we showed the problems faced by the product and came up with a design brief.

The hOT cHAI gLASS

The DIRTY LOOKING cHAI gLASS

The SHARP cHAI gLASS

The UNCLEAN cHAI gLASS

The STAIN LEAVING cHAI gLASS

The given design brief comprises of the articulation of the inheritent limitations and possibilities of the Chai Glass. We have made the following observations of the product by our means of our primary research, user experiences and also by studying its manufacturing process. The challenges included: 1. Its structure and ergonomics. 2. Its thermal conductivity 3. Its material handling and manufacturing. 4. Its ease of handling. 5.Its sanitation 6. Its quality control 7. Its Chemical Properties 8. Its popular image in India 9. Its perception as a product in the given environment.

UNI 48

ASSIGNMENT 2 The area which we were alloted to study for the assignment was the Law Garden Food Street. We had to visit the site and understand the space, the problems that exist and finally come up with three concepts on the following grounds: 1. Easily implementable solution 2. Innovative Solution 3. Futuristic Solution

The Problems with the space was represented by this imaginary character called Bob, Bob enters the Law garden and faces the following problems : 1. Directional issues 2. Bad Parking system 3. The pollution 4. Signage problems 5. Language understanding 5. Lack of sanitation

UNI 49 An Easily Implimentable Solution:

Speed Breakers

provision for direct-to-stall supply of gas, electricity & water

retractable awning to protect from rain and other falling things

paved Roadsides

better signages

rebranding of the LAw garden food street to give an unique identity

An Innovative Solution: We proposed a modular structure that could be created which would optimize and conserve space.

Hoarding space for branding

Protection from rain

UNI 50

A Futuristic Solution : We imagined the Law Garden Food Street in the 2020. keeping that in mind we created a floating structure which is circular in shape like a bubble. It is transparent and has all the aspects and feel of a food street inside it. It has dedicated space for parking and moving about. It has state of the art seating arrangement which provides you a hygine check before you eat. We also kept in mind that space would be restarained and thus the floating structure, not hindering any space for transport below.

The Overall Learning The faculty team introduced a short play/skit as the final Design Process as a course helped me understand how to analyze and tackle problems to find effective design solutions. It also made me come across he complexities involved with every little product that is present around us, its interactions with its surroundings, its user experience, the social and cultural connect it has with its users. It also made me understand why it is important to follow a systematic process while solving design problems and how only then can we come up with the most effective and feasible solution.

Its a route, Its a map, No! Its a Process.

The Typography module was for a period of 2 weeks. It was anchored by Mr. Tarundeep Girdhar and was supported by Mr. Akash Halankar. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 54

X Height

Cap Height

The Typography course took place for a period of 2 rigorous yet memorable weeks. The course took us through a journey encompassing letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, layouts to publications as a whole. The course had us working on both hand and digital medium giving us a balanced knowledge and understanding of the details going into each and every design decision that we make.

Baseline

The Course started with the basic terminology of a Character anatomy. We got familiar to terms like x- height, cap height, baseline, stress, ascenders, descenders, arm, leg, bowl, bar, etc. We understood the basic differences between Serifs and Sans Serifs typefaces. We learnt about the timeline of Typefaces and what sources of their origins. We understood the formation of a character and how the strokes are responsible for the form of the respective character. We learnt about kerning, leading, traps, etc.

Arm

Leg

Its when you realize arms and legs exist elsewhere too.

UNI 55

AS S I GNM E NT 1 : The Assignment was divided into 3 parts. We write our name in our favorite typeface from memory. We then take references of the actual typeface and correct our neighbors assignments. We then finally write our own name with the corrections

And your favourite font has all the more reasons to be liked.

a

UNI 56

AS S I GNM E NT 2 : The Assignment was to take a classmate’s name and represent his/her attribute using a appropriate typeface. Name: Pallavi Jain Attribute: Practical Typeface: Franklin Gothic Condensed. Attention was payed to the kerning of the letters to provide a formal and wholesome output, thus representing the attribute.

A group of words are tough to handle.

aa

AS S I GNM E NT 3 : The Assignment was to take a given quote, which had a set of regular and bold versions of the type. We were frame the quote into a layout emphasizing the important parts. Typography hierarchy is well understood. It also teaches the importance of proper leading in between lines and how the layout effects the readability of the user.

UNI 57

AS S I GNM E NT 4 : The Assignment was to take a given quote, which was to be photocopied into different font sizes to understand how the size of a font plays an important role in emphasizing something. The different sizes of the font made us come up with interesting layouts to serve the purpose.

And different sizes of them get you thinking

a

AS S I GNM E NT 5: The Assignment was to take a given quote, and emphasize different words to make it mean completely different from what the initial quote means. Finding sentences within sentences was an interesting take to the assignment.

UNI 58

AS S I GNM E NT 6:

ANURAG DAS 19 9 2 - 29 9 1

The Assignment was to design your own epitaph to show Typographic hierarchy and lay outing. Bringing harmony while using type and graphical elements along with it. Using different Typefaces and understand how they compliment each other to form a balanced composition.

Dying gets a little more interesting. AS S I GNM E NT 7:

when LOVE was not so messed up

The Assignment was a collaborative one where we collaborated with the 3rd Sem UG students and formed a group of two to work on the topic of , “ Why the mess food tastes better when eaten outside the mess. and come up with a visual which would include an illustration and a write up . It was good to know a new person, here my UG partner Ayushi Katare and also to understand how an illustration and a the typography go hand in hand.

UNI 59

AS S I GNM ENT 8: The Assignment was to redesign a label of an existing medicine bottle keeping all the information. Understanding how commercial typography works with constraints and how important it is to deal with the readability of information at such a small label size. Use of appropriate colors which increase readability and is easy for the eye to register.

And Medicine Bottles deserve all the time from us to read them.

UNI 60

AS S I GNM ENT 9: The Assignment was to take study a given font and come up with a poster, in this case I had Fette Fraktur, a Blackletter Gothic font from the 1950s. We were to study its origin, its cultural influence, commercial uses , character sets, comparasion with regards to the other typefaces of the same family. The exercize gave us a lot of knowledge about why a font actually exists and the reasons it came into existence, the influence of its era. The use of ligatures and why they came into existence.

Its not just you designing but your surroundings making you to do that.

UNI 61

AS S I GNM ENT 1 0: The Assignment was to take a given speech, in this case I was given a speech by Mr. Sam Manekshaw. We had to read the speech and divide it into the important and less important parts, we also had to figure out the parts of the speech which were to be emphasized and finally design a booklet. Understanding the use of grids while forming editorial layouts and working with different typefaces harmoniously. Use of text in such a way that a continuation is maintained an there is no hindrance while reading it.

Gutters are extremely essential to every book you make

UNI 62

AS S IG N M E N T 10 : The Assignment was understand type in a larger form so we took a particular letter from our font that were asked to study on, Fette fraktur in my case. After having selected a letter which forms a part of the word ‘basic typography’ we painted the particular letter in the foyer grounds. Understanding the use of grids while forming a single letter and how the strokes move to form the particular letter and the formation or anatomy of it.

The cleaning in process.

p I choose the letter p from the character set.

The Typography module was for a period of 3 weeks. It was anchored by Mrs. Tridha Gajjar. The course comprised of lectures and assignments simultaneously.

UNI 66 The Image Making module extended for 3 weeks. It was headed by Mrs. Tridha Gajjar. The course comprised of a few lectures and multiple assignments. We learnt about Graphic Design and how is used in communicating. We learnt about sustainable Graphic Design, we also learnt about how the communication cycle works where the sender sends an information and it is received by the receiver and a response is returned back to the sender. We learnt about simplification and abstraction. We learnt about Signs and Image, the various ways of representing an Image. The course had assignments dealing with letter integrations, to simplifying an image or a photograph, creating posters to convey a message. Pictograms defining an instruction or an alert.

AS S IG N M E N T 1: This Assignment was to take two letters preferably the initials of your name and print those letters in different typefaces and sizes according to ones need and requirement and then use different letters of different typefaces and integrate the two chosen letters to come up with a singular form which is balanced and is read as two different letters together even in the composed form. The chosen letters for the assignment were A and D.

Steps to create the final design : • The letters were printed from different typefaces, which included regular, bold and italic versions of them. • After having printed them the letters were then traced onto a tracing sheet and we tried to integrate them. • We tried to work with the positive and negative spaces to compose the forms. • Readability of both the letters were considered while designing the forms and also the typography hierarchy. • After a chosen form was selected we further refined the form to reach to the final output.

UNI 71

AS S IG N M E N T 2 : This Assignment was to take one letter and another number and print those in different typefaces and sizes according to ones need and requirement and then use different letters of different typefaces and integrate the chosen letter and number to come up with a singular form which is balanced and is read as a different letter and a number together, even in the composed form. The chosen letter and number for the assignment were B and 8.

Steps to create the final design : • The letter and number were printed from different typefaces, which included regular, bold and italic versions of them.

UNI 72 The selected form was iterated to create this form.

This shape was omitted

These points were to be in the same horizontal imaginary line

These lines were to be parallel to each other

The Final Form. You require an eye and a magnifying glass sometimes to get it all right.

UNI 74

AS S IG N M E N T 3 : This Assignment was to take a topic which holds a broader aspect of use. We selected the topic home or adventure. I took up home as a broader topic. After having selected that we had to write down what characteristics of home do we relate to, or what is the understanding of home to us. After selecting a topic under home we had to choose an object and represent that intangible characteristic of home through that object. We could take a picture of the object or take a picture from the web. After doing that we had to simplify that object to an extent that it doesn’t lose its identity and also serve the purpose of communicating that required feeling. The topic chosen for the assignment was Home.

After the brainstorming sessions I had come up with the tying of shoelaces to represent personalization.

UNI 75

The object was photographed in such a way that it focusses on the shoe laces.

The simplified object.

UNI 76

AS S IG N M E N T 4 : Now using the simplified object we had to create three posters, the first poster should have the simplified object in black and white and just text showing the aspect of personalization through it. The second two posters whereas can have more than one of the object and can be used in any form possible. The second and third posters used the same object but were multiplied and the laces were colored to bring a message of individuality and the posters were to show the importance of sharing.

UNI 79

AS S IG N M E N T 5 : Keeping the same topic of home we were to design pictograms for a particular use in context of home. The topic of my pictogram was

To keep shoes outside before entering the house. The context of use of the pictogram was to be considered and the space where it was to be used is also very important. The space :

Outside the entry door of homes .

Is is a subtle pictogram which is just an instruction or a suggestion to the visitors who come to the house, because it dealt with such a context it couldn’t be very harsh or unwelcoming.

Shoes were taken as an element while designing the pictogram, the shoes were iterated to show minimum details.

If you were thinking what those quotes in red meant So summing it all up, design managed to surprise me yet again. It started with a line, another line and yet another line. Then i moved to getting my perspectives right. I also realized that God takes a lot of time to make his creations specially during my nature and human study. I learnt t study faces better with the portraits i made. I realized its not just the tewelve colors that they talk about, there are shades, tints, hues and many more. I think I have somewhat learnt the formulas of color mixing and found more ways to be moody. I figured that Gestalts principles were omnipresent and being a part of my skit group, ‘Le Aa’ was the best thing in the course. I will take more time to judge if something is actually aesthetically appealing or not having learnt philosophies on aesthetics. Printing was way more than just ink on

paper. Design as a process was way clearer and all the more important. Coming to typography I learnt that arms and legs exist elsewhere too and my favorite font had all the more reasons to be favorite. It was challenging to handle a lot of words specially with different sizes. Making an epitaph made dying super interesting. Designing a medicine bottle label made me understand its complexity and I learnt how a font can be controversial just because it was used by the Nazis. Gutters were an essential in making this document. In image making, I learnt that visual correction might just need a magnifying glass to get it all correct. I learnt new ways to tie laces and show personalization for my simplified poster and how pictograms gave a new dimension to instructions.
