Preface Undersatnding book design is important for every visual communication student. It is a big task involving creativity most of all, but also a perception of the content of the book. Through the process of book design I realized it is very crucial to know what the book is about, it is more thant just knowing the content of the book, one has to figure out its essence. The module also taught me how to incoperate the content with the cover, as well as the page layout and typography. It is necessary for all these elements to create a cohesive whole so as to make it a good book book design.

The AM is a book about four amazing people called Alex, Matt , Jamie and Nick who form the band -The Arctic Monkeys have been with me through all my happy, sad, angry and especially heart broken times. The magic they create has never failed to support me. This book is therefore a brief about the band and how they produce their music and how it would help a lot of people discover the unique world that they have created.

9

Brief Introduction

10

The book brings forth the band’s young meomries one by one as at reader dives into each alubm that came out as per the timeline. It also gives an insight to the the kind and quality of music they produced at each point.

Arctic Monkeys is also a unique band because it gained it’s worldwide popularity from a social networking wbsiteTumbler. The british band had always been performing lowkey since they were all teenagers.

The band earned their fame even before that had released their first album. They experimented with heavy garagerock, pop rock, punk and many more, while still keeping their songs congruent and they have also managed to stay relevant in the mainstream music despite of the fall in rock music’s popularity over the years.

Formed in the year 2002 teenage neighbours Alex Tuner and Matt Helders were inspired by local peers play music. The Sheffiled music scene was filled by other bands with guitar music at that time. So the guys decided to start their own. They eventually started practicing in the Yellow Arch studios in Neepsand and played their first ever gig in 2003

at a local Pub- The Grapes. Later that year they revealed their demo CD with 18 songs. It was demo that they gave away for free at their gigs initially, so as to spread more awareness about them. Many of them got uploaded on the internet by their early fans and ever since their music continued to be shared and spread all around the world. The book has been designed in a way to make the audiance get a jist of the band and their work. There has been a usage of a proper colour pallete and typography to to add the essence one needs to percive each time they listen to the music by the band. The book also contains some illustration that help elaborate their lyrics. 11

Research Since the band has never officialy been to India, there was literally no Indian media source that could help me produce the content for the book. Taking it to the internet gave me the maximum exposure to the band and its history. I took to platforms like Tumbler, Youtube and some websites like VH1- offical website, NME, Pitchfork, Billboard etc. After forming a legitimate timeline to from the bands formation to its latest album, there was still a lot more left to be explored about their music and inspirations.

16

The research about their music was then mainly pen downed by watching videos by vloggers who reviewd their album. I also took to audiance polls to find out what have been the band’s most popular songs. To come up with a colour pallete for the book I also reserched their on stage perfomances to find out the kind of vibe the band wanted to their audience to perceive.

Ideation After finishing my research, my ideation was to give a brief about the band by introducing them to the readersfrom their birth to giving them an insight to their music through the timeline of their album releases. To keep it short and simple so as to follow the guidelines for a coffee table book, I elaborated the inpirations for the album along with one of the popular song on the album with a line illustration made on a pen tablet on the side.

Colour Pallete

Each colour in the colour pallete has been picked up from some or the other album by the band, also the way the band dresses up in actual life and on stage. Initally a ton of

colous were produced, but the final there was a settelment for the above showen 6 colours as as they a create a harmony and balance despite of some colours being complete a contrast to each other.

Illustration

The illustrations in the book run alongside the song lyrics. Thy are meant to depict more about the song. They are simple line drawing illustrations so as to keep more focus on the the content of the book for the reader.Keeping the same in mind, the illustration for the cover of the book and for the acknowledgement and contents page made too.

Conclusion & Learning Book design is a tedious task, it is significant for a good book to have all the elements to come together and form harmony. Everything on the book from the cover to the text alignment is responsiblle for creating the final essence for the book. Knowing and understanding the content is equally important. Withut know what the book actually has for its readers to offer, the right aesthetics cannot be achieved.

The cover of the book is also very infulencial, therefore a good graphic designer it is mandatory to accept that the book cover needs to be judged (despiest all the scholers telling you not to). A good book cover is something that is meant to stand out in a pile different books. The moto of a good book cover is to identified. It should be comething that a customer would want to pick up, even if it just to take a good look at it.
