SEPTEMBER 2018 “ANZA has remained a constant for expats seeking friendship, community and connection.”
F
or ANZA’s special 70th anniversary issue, I plunged into the office archives; sifting through boxes of faded photos (the hairstyles and fashions were priceless!), back issues of the magazine, and retro event flyers. I was amazed by how much we’ve changed, but
also by how our core values have stayed steady and strong. Over seven decades of rapid change and development in Singapore, ANZA has remained a constant for expats seeking friendship, community and connection. During my research, I discovered more about my own family’s long history with ANZA. My Grandfather, Ralph Harry, was the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore in 1956, bringing my father and his sisters to live in Singapore when there were still kampongs, bare-chested kids shimmied up palm trees, hawkers sold their wares from street carts, and the city was troubled with riots and industrial unrest. Grandpa no doubt had plenty of interaction with a newly-minted ANZA organisation at the time. Many years later Dad was twice posted to Singapore – this time for his legal work. “We joined ANZA in 1980-1982, and again in 1994-1998,” remembers my mother, Mary Harry (pictured: above left). “In 1980 ANZA rang to welcome us to Singapore and to invite us to New Members drinks. We went to lots of ANZA functions, and

there were plenty of activities for our three daughters to be involved in. But the second time around they were grown up and attending university and I struggled as an empty nester.” ANZA provided a lifeline during a difficult time for Mum. “I pored over the ANZA Magazine and joined everything – cooking classes, tours, morning teas. That helped me enormously, especially the ANZA Mahjong class, which led me to a fantastic group of friends. I still play every two weeks in Melbourne all these years later. I met my wonderful friend Macarena (pictured: above right) at ANZA Mahjong in 1994,” says Mum. ANZA is now a brilliant support to my own family. I love coming to work in the welcoming ANZA office, my daughter starts Nippers this month, and my husband stays in touch with a surfing crew through ANZA Boardriders. I’ve made new friends at Ladies Nights, Melbourne Cup Race days, and wine evenings. So, thank you ANZA, for all you’ve done for my family and countless other expats over seventy impressive years. Have a cupcake, with extra icing and sprinkles – you deserve it!

MARIUS JOHANSEN VICE PRESIDENT, COMMERCIAL WHY DID WILHELMSEN DECIDE TO PARTNER WITH ANZA CYCLING? Having 8-10 employees already riding with ANZA for some time, we have wanted to give something back to the club. The sponsorship presented a unique opportunity to do just that. WHAT DOES YOUR COMPANY DO HERE IN SINGAPORE? We deliver a huge range of product required to operate vessels, and platform and coordinate any service required to take a vessel in and out of a port. Almost like an advanced travel agency for vessels and crew. We are one of the largest maritime services companies globally, and with the large volume of vessels visiting annually in Singapore it is naturally a key port for us operationally. FAVOURITE CYCLES ROUTES IN SINGAPORE, AND INTERNATIONALLY? The Mandai loop is a great late evening alternative
for a quick and fast paced ride. Socially, I enjoy the Saturday Kranji ride with the club. Internationally, the bike course of Norseaman Extreme Triathlon takes you 180km from a fjord on the west coast of Norway to the east, passing through five mountain passes, which are the most spectacular nature you can imagine. Even if swimming and running is not your thing, then I would still urge you to go there just for the ride. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO KEEP FIT AND ACTIVE HERE IN SINGAPORE? Cycling, cycling and a tiny bit of running. TOP TIP FOR NEWCOMERS TO SINGAPORE FOR SETTLING IN? Join ANZA and come ride with us on Saturday morning. You will meet a lot of great people and make the best friends. Follow our Facebook site to get information about the next intro ride. They are usually once a month.

“I’ve now spent just over a decade with ANZA – a quarter of my life! A seventh of ANZA’s!”
G
’day and welcome to the September issue of our wonderful ANZA Magazine! The magazine, and the many staff and volunteers that bring it together each month, are always wonderful, but this month I’m emoting a little harder than usual. Perhaps I’m a bit emotional because ANZA is turning 70, and that makes me think of the countless thousands of hours, spent by innumerable volunteers, over seven decades, to make us what we are now. And how much of that was done with no access to air conditioning! Then I think maybe I’m a bit emotional because, like ANZA, both my parents are baby-boomers. Thinking of the effort required to keep ANZA going during all these decades reminds me of the effort my parents put into getting me to a point where I can contribute to the world, and do useful things like volunteer for ANZA. Or perhaps the emotion comes from thinking that I’ve now spent just over a decade with ANZA (a quarter of my life! A seventh of ANZA’s!), which reminds me how much I’ve grown and experienced since then, and how much my life had changed for the better. Ten years ago I was single, footloose and
fancy free, and still suffering through the inevitable sense of loss that comes when a professional sports career is cut short. When I look back to the man I was then, I realise that it is not just ANZA that has flourished recently. Oh, I know why I’m so emotional. Ten years ago I’d never met Joey, and now I’m her husband. Ten years ago I couldn’t imagine being a father, and now we’re due early next year! In ten years, one human can change a lot, and the world can change around them. In seventy years, a human can live most of a good life, but the world can transform completely. Over the last 70 years, all of those individual humans, ANZA members and volunteers, have devoted so much time and effort into our organisation. That has meant that, despite the huge change across the world, there’s always been a patch right here in Singapore that says; “g’day mate, can I give you a hand?” And that is just awesome. Wish us luck! PJ

WHAT’S ON
Wonder Boy Canadian comic artist David Finch is a legend in his industry – having contributed to notable Marvel and DC Comics titles such as Batman, New Avengers, Moon Knight, Ultimatum, and Wonder Woman. Finch is in Singapore this month for the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (see calendar for details). WHEN DID YOU START DRAWING COMICS? I started working for Top Cow Productions as an intern in 1994. I knew that I could draw, and it was something that I could do without an education. Once I started I loved it and it just felt right. WHAT TRAINING HAVE YOU DONE? I’ve treated learning to draw like a job: two years of working every day trying to learn the basics; anatomy, perspective and storytelling. Once I got into the industry it was like a whirlwind, and every picture I drew was trying to compete with all of the
other artists around me. It was very high stress, but we all grew from trying to outdo each other! COMIC BOOK CHARACTER YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? I would have to say that I most identify with Wolverine, probably because he’s the character I most want to draw right now. HOW DO YOU GET YOUR GEEK ON? I like to play a lot of video games. Right now, I’m playing Elder Scrolls online. It’s the way I relax and unwind after working. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT ATTENDING CONS? I love having the opportunity to meet the fans and talk to people about the work
that we do, as well as talking to other professionals that I wouldn’t otherwise get to see. I work in a very solitary field, so conventions are a great way to feel connected to the comic book community. WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO FANS IN SINGAPORE? I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and I can’t wait to share my love for comics with them. WHAT’S NEXT IN YOUR CAREER? I’m currently working on a creator-owned project that unfortunately I can’t really talk about. It’s my first experience inking an entire project myself, and it’s been incredibly challenging and a lot of fun all at the same time.

S
ince the first year of Alex Beard’s Bachelor of Performing Arts degree at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), he had a sense that he wanted to pursue a study abroad program at the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI). His course coordinator, Dr Frances Barbe, and ITI’s director, T. Sasitharan, had devised a program whereby up to five WAAPA students could study for 10 weeks at ITI on New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant Funding. The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which supports Australian undergraduates to study and undertake semester-based or short-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research in 40 host locations across the Indo-Pacific region. When the time came to apply, Alex jumped at the opportunity - but, somewhat unintentionally at first, he also applied for the New Colombo Plan Scholarship. To cut a long story short, he soon found himself with both the NCP Mobility Grant and Scholarship. Because of these opportunities, he spent most of 2017 and 2018 studying and interning in Singapore at ITI and at Chowk Productions - a dance company that blurs the lines between contemporary and traditional work. After finishing his study, Alex interned with ITI and acted as Assistant Director for Sankar Venkateswaran’s reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s When We Dead Awaken. Following the initial run of the show in Singapore, the cast were invited to perform it at a festival in India in April of this year, which Alex performed in. They have now formed a collective called Jangama, and are organising a tour. Working with Venkateswaran led Alex to work with Chowk Productions, a company with which Venkateswaran often collaborates. Founded in 2007 by Raka Maitra, Chowk Productions explores
the dichotomy between contemporary and classical dramaturgies. Alex took on a number of jobs with Chowk Productions, including stage managing their latest production at Esplanade Theatres by the Bay, Pallavi with Stillness. All of these experiences have led to a number of future collaborations, even though his time in Singapore as a scholar is technically at an end. Over the next two years, together with Dr Barbe and Maitra, Alex will be assisting in the remount of a previous Chowk production, from: The Platform. This will be performed in Australia, with a half Singaporean/Indian cast and a half Australian cast (WAAPA graduates). Maitra and Alex are also working towards a project at the Children’s Little Theatre in Calcutta, India, in which they hope to engage Venkateswaran, and other collaborators Alex has worked with during his time in Singapore. Looking to the future, these experiences and future opportunities illustrate the value of programs such as the New Colombo Plan Scholarship and Mobility Grants, for developing strong personal, professional and institutional links within the region.

NEW SECOND SECRETARY TESSA SINCLAIR
We recently welcomed the latest addition to our team – new Second Secretary, Tessa Sinclair. Here’s what she has to say about joining us in sunny Singapore:
“
I’m from Banks Peninsula originally, but Wellington has been home for the last few years. I’ve come to Singapore from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where I worked on New Zealand’s trade and economic relationships with South-East Asia and New Zealand’s relationship with Europe. I arrived in Singapore with my partner Alan in midJuly, coming from very wintery weather, we’re both looking forward to being warm all year round! The amount of trees and gardens everywhere has been the most impressive thing about Singapore so far, with the amazing variety of food being a close second.

ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE FROM HE MR BRUCE GOSPER, AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TO SINGAPORE
“
Happy 70th birthday, ANZA! You really don’t look a day over 45.
I
”
’m delighted to wish ANZA Singapore a very happy 70th birthday. As Australia’s High Commissioner to Singapore, I would also like to extend our Government's gratitude to ANZA for your outstanding work supporting Australian and New Zealand expats living and working in Singapore over seven decades.
From humble beginnings in 1948 as a society to encourage friendships between Aussie and Kiwi families living here, ANZA has grown and transformed into a vibrant and inclusive 7,000 member-strong social and service-oriented association, representing a range of nationalities and age ranges. Not only does ANZA provide Australians in Singapore with a supportive "home away from home", opportunities to socialise with other expats and learn more about Singapore, you also make a valuable contribution to the Singaporean community through your ANZA Action initiatives. It is your contribution to the wellbeing of Australians living here and the wider Singaporean community of which ANZA should be so proud. Over the past 70 years, ANZA has been witness to the remarkable story of Singapore's independence and its development as a modern, prosperous nation. Today, Australia's bilateral relationship with Singapore is one of our closest and most comprehensive in Southeast Asia based on long-standing defence, education, political, trade, science and innovation, and tourism links, as well as our two countries' similar strategic outlooks. Our two countries will enhance our collaboration in innovation, science, research and technology, capitalising on our respective and complementary strengths. During ANZA's birthday month in September, the Australian High Commission will host the Good Science = Great Business 2018: An Australian Festival of Innovation in Singapore and ASEAN. This Festival will showcase Australian innovation and research capability in Singapore to further encourage this collaboration. Organisations like ANZA, with your long-standing and trusted brand in Singapore contribute to Australia's friendship with Singapore and our warm bilateral relationship, helping to keep our peopleto-people links and national brand strong. The Australian High Commission in Singapore is delighted to host your 70th birthday celebration. I wish you a wonderful evening and a long and bright future in Singapore. Happy 70th birthday, ANZA! You really don't look a day over 45. Best wishes,
HE MR BRUCE GOSPER Australian High Commissioner to Singapore

ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE FROM HE DR JONATHAN AUSTIN, NEW ZEALAND’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO SINGAPORE
A big kia ora/thank you from me and all the team at the New Zealand High Commission to all involved in ANZA: the executive committee, the office, the members. Keep up your great work. Now for the next 70 years …
C
ongratulations ANZA on reaching 70 years old, surely the most active and vibrant 70 year old in the Little Red Dot!
ANZA was established as a social club to bring New Zealanders and Australians together, building on the strong trans-Tasman relationship between our two wonderful countries.
”
In 2018 it has expanded well beyond these roots to be open to all nationalities wanting to be involved in a wide range of social, sporting and community activities. In recent years it has also become more integrated with our Singaporean hosts, including engagement in a range of really worthwhile charitable causes. There are now over 1,000 children who benefit from ANZA’s soccer, netball, athletics, scouts, and surf lifesaving clubs. I’m personally grateful for the incredible organisation behind ANZA Netball (and extra grateful that Tanglin Trust School lets ANZA use their air-conditioned netball courts!) I’m glad that as ANZA has grown it has not lost the friendly Antipodean spirit that characterises Australia and New Zealand, open and welcoming to all and prepared to give things a go. ANZA’s activities have been a great help to many expats (me and my family included) wanting to embrace all the many things that Singapore has to offer. A big kia ora/thank you from me and all of the team at the New Zealand High Commission to all involved in ANZA: the executive committee, the office, the members. Keep up your great work. Now for the next 70 years …

HAPPY 70TH ANZA! AS WE CELEBRATE ANZA’S 70TH YEAR, TAKE A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE AND FIND OUT HOW WE BECAME THE LARGEST ORGANISATION FOR EXPATRIATES IN SINGAPORE.
1960-1970s 1948-1961 WHERE IT ALL BEGAN ANZA began as a registered society in the Colony of Singapore in 1917 and was known as the Australian and New Zealand Association of Malaya. In 1948 ANZA was founded, and the original association ceased to exist. It took until 1961 for official registration to begin, as there was re-building to be done after the Second World War and the administration process took some time. ANZA’s goals in the early years were to provide support to Australian and New Zealand families based in Singapore: a home-away-from-home and a place where expats could meet fellow countrymen, relax, build important friendships, and give back to the community.
22 anza
Although ANZA started as a male-only club, it soon became a family organisation, with women at the forefront of organising activities, fundraising and events. The Women’s Auxiliary Committee was formed in 1974, with a focus on raising money for local charities. The ANZA Ball was held at the Seaview Hotel in the 1950s-60s and was a very formal affair. Over the years it was held at Raffles Hotel, The Churchill Room at the Tanglin Club, and the Goodwood Hotel. Sport was thriving during this period. ANZA Soccer sent out its first registration letter to parents in 1979 inviting young players to join the ANZA International Junior Soccer League. ANZA Tennis also began in 1979, with social games played on Thursday mornings at the Minden Road Courts. ANZA Swimming was popular, with meets at the Singapore Swimming Club and Island Country Club.
1980-1990s By the 1980s ANZA was running a range of classes for expats, ranging from craft to cooking, and regular cultural tours throughout Singapore. Events were in full swing, with the ANZA Fashion Parade a hit throughout the 80s. The ANZA ‘Black and White’ Ball was a roaring success. A Children’s Christmas Party was a yearly highlight, with families turning up in droves to meet Santa and be entertained by children’s performers. In 1987 a Newcomers Coffee Morning was introduced – which still runs today as Casual Coffee! ANZA’s Keep Fit aerobics classes set to 80’s pop music were a sell-out!

NOW 2000-2010s 1990-2000s ANZA celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 1998. To commemorate the occasion, a team of members compiled a book entitled Snippets from the Past, documenting ANZA’s history and formation. A grand Golden Jubilee Ball was held at the Shangri-La ballroom to mark the occasion. Also in this year the Women’s Auxiliary Committee (now known as ANZA Action) celebrated its Silver Jubilee. ANZA Netball began in 1991, catering to demand for the popular girl’s sport in Singapore. Tours ventured to Palau Ubin, Little India, Changi Prison Chapel and more. Classes were held in computing, hat making, perfect dinner parties, and mahjong.
The ANZA office was located inside the Tanglin Shopping Centre, and it was always buzzing with volunteers. A Newcomers Wine Night was held to welcome new arrivals. Events included an Art & Craft Fair, trivia nights, and the longstanding Melbourne Cup Lunch. The Writers’ Group began meeting twice a month, and the first ANZA Scouts group was introduced. ANZA Ladies Golf played in Batam, Bintan and Singapore and ANZA Cycling was gaining popularity. Classes were held in ‘Introduction to the Internet’ and ‘Writing and Sending an Email’! The ANZA Volunteer of the Year Awards were initiated (the first awards night was held in 2011), as well as a regular Girls Night Out (now known as Ladies Night). ANZA Secret Men’s Business, ANZA Wine Club, Book Group, and ANZA Click! Photography were established as popular social and interest groups.
ANZA has now grown to a membership base of more than 7000, representing a range of nationalities and age groups including Australian, New Zealand and British, as well as from countries as diverse as the USA, The Netherlands, Germany, Canada, South Africa and Singapore. Current sports groups include Cycling, Soccer, Netball, AFL, Nippers, Cricket, Fishing, Yoga, Walking, Athletics, and more. Our annual ANZA Ball and ANZA Melbourne Cup Race Day events host around 500 guests each, and ANZA runs 60 events every year. These range from Casual Coffee to Ladies Nights, AFL Grand Final, wine evenings, Thriving in Singapore and Understanding the Job Market. Our annual Great Australia Day BBQ with the Australian International School (AIS) attracts nearly 4000 people. ANZA Action now supports over 15 local charities.

AN Z A TOUR S
ONE NORTH: IDEAS AND INNOVATION Explore Singapore’s very own Silicon Valley, a live-work-play-learn hub spanning 200 hectares. World renowned architect Zaha Hadid, designed the masterplan and set the area in undulating hills and lush greenery. Green is the buzz word here, and we will stroll past amazing
buildings including Matrix, Symbiosis and Genome. Discover a dedicated art enclave including galleries, public sculptures and a wide selection of restaurants and cafes.
TOUR AND T-TIME AT THE W SENTOSA Escape the city and come to the idyllic coastal setting that is the W Singapore, Sentosa Cove. This breezy resort hotel is an oasis of art and quirky luxury for sophisticated globetrotters. We will be guided on an exploration of the hotel where the vivid interiors are enhanced by a diverse collection of curated art, all set
against dramatic architecture. Relax and enjoy the ambience of the WooBar and be spoiled by a decadent high tea - W T Time - served within a decorative silver birdcage. Sip premium teas served with scones, madeleines, cakes and a myriad of other savoury and sweet delights.
WALK BUKIT GOMBAK AND “LITTLE GUILIN” Discover a little region of China tucked away in Singapore on this 7km Charity Walk. Let your feet do the work and we will donate the proceeds to ANZA charities. Discover Bukit Town Park, created from a disused granite quarry. The park is also known as Little Guilin because of its similarity to the region of the same name in China. You’ll discover Bukit Batok,
meaning the coughing hills, named after the sound of explosions when it was still operating as a quarry. Walk alongside the Green Corridor, a 26km trail where the old railway from Singapore to Malaysia used to run. Finishing at King Albert MRT, this walk is a delight for nature lovers and will suit most levels of fitness.
DEEPAVALI WALK IN LITTLE INDIA Deepavali – the Festival of Lights, is the most important festival of the year for Hindus. Come on this walk to find out how people of Hindu faith celebrate this very colourful holiday. Check out Serangoon Road and its back streets, and discover interesting shops selling spices, textiles and garlands. Learn about the history of the area and see the beautiful architecture
of the rainbow hued terrace houses. Hear about the Gods in the oldest Hindu temple in the area and witness how the devotees pray. Taste delicious Indian snacks and ‘pulled’ tea. Curious about how a sari is tied? A seamstress will do a live demonstration just for us! You have the option of staying on for lunch at the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Little India.
FOODIE ADVENTURES IN LITTLE INDIA Learn about Singapore’s food traditions and history in the company of our “foodie” guide and One Farrer Hotel’s dynamic chef. Walk through Little India, and learn about its colourful history, and visit one of Singapore’s most iconic markets to learn about the ingredients we will later cook with. Take the MRT back to the hotel for refreshments, followed by a tour of the
hotel’s private rooftop farm with amazing views over Little India. CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING A GROUP OF INTREPID ARTISTS MIXED LATTES WITH PAINTBRUSHES AS THEY LEARNT THE ANCIENT ART OF CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
A
NZA Tours introduced a group of aspiring artists to the delicate technique of Chinese brush painting at Highlander Coffee. Participants were shown the concepts of Chinese art, and introduced to the basics of traditional Chinese painting, including brushstrokes, colour tones and ink techniques. During the lesson Mr Yap - a renowned artist with over 30 years’ experience - guided painters through an easy step-bystep process to complete a beautiful Chinese flower painting - the finished paintings of plum blossom were frame-worthy! Mother-daughter pairing Cathy and Melanie Hewett were impressed with how much they learnt in just a few hours.
“My friend Jo was coming along, we go to lots of different ANZA events together. For me it’s part of experiencing and appreciating Singapore culture and understanding the city I’m now living in. I’m very surprised by how well my painting turned out. I had very low expectations of my ability to produce something attractive! Last time my daughter Mel came to visit we did ANZA Tours Peranakan tile painting with artist Jennifer Lim. Trying something new and creative together seems to be a feature of her visits!” - CATHY HEWETT
DID YOU KNOW?
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Starting around 4000 B.C. traditional Chinese painting has developed continuously over a period of more than six thousand years.

SAVING SINGAPORE’S STREET KITTENS T
e amazing expats behind Save h Our Street Kittens Singapore (SOKS) have rescued over 400 kittens – re-homing the vulnerable animals with loving families. The task of hand feeding and raising litters of kittens in their homes is relentless and exhausting, but SOKS cofounders Claire Forbes and Julia Leimanis say every time one of the adorable fluff balls finds a ‘forever home’ it’s worth it. Claire became aware of the stray problem in Singapore several years ago when she moved into Upper Thompson, an area populated with street cats. “I pulled 10 kittens out of the drains in the space of a month. I sought help with sterilisation, and the kittens were re-homed with the support of expat networks. That’s really how SOKS began.” Julia and Claire’s homes are now overrun with tiny, furry houseguests – up to a dozen at a time. “Project SOKS is a kitten rescue organisation, specialising in neonatal (under 4 weeks) kitten rescue,” explains Julia. “We care for abandoned or homeless kittens, raise them in our family homes and re-home them. SOKS was formally established in April 2018. Since
“Seeing our babies go off into their forever homes, to have a better chance at life, is what warms our hearts the most.”

Hopefully I’m instilling in my children the responsibility of pet ownership, charitable giving, and the idea that we can make a difference in the world by the small things we do.” Julia and Claire are “chief kitten foster mummies”, and admit it’s a full time job which does impede on their social lives. “We spend hours every day bottle feeding babies, cleaning up after kittens, answering messages for people requesting help, and finding homes for our much loved babies,” says Julia. “Thankfully, we are supported by a team that includes five other foster families. The kittens are all given names and capture everyone’s hearts. “We both love the constant contact we have with kittens,” says Julia. “They are lovely pets and bring a lot of affection and fun with their unique characters and crazy play antics.”

Donations welcome!
SOKS gratefully receives donations of food and other supplies. “We accept contributions towards our raw meat diets, the purchase of KMR (kitten formula milk) and kitty litter in particular,” says Claire. “These are items that we go through by the bucket load! People can also help us by contributing to the vet care and other supplies that we provide – probiotics, deworming and flea treatments.”
Maia and Aidan love helping out with mum’s kitten rescue.
SOKS have partnered with The Cat Welfare Society Singapore (CWS). “The CWS supports us by sterilising the mothers and fathers of any kittens that we rescue, prior to their release back in the communities where they live. CWS receives very little government support and relies almost solely on donations from the public.” How can people help SOKS with their mission? “The best way to help us is by considering adoption of a fluffy feline for your family!” says Claire. “If you are not in a position to adopt, then spread the word with anyone who may be. Now that we have our own Facebook page (ProjectSOKS-Save-Our-Street-Kittens-Singapore), people can contact us and see the many kittens we have available for adoption. We rely on the sharing of our posts to reach a wider audience.” Julia and Claire stress the importance of adopting, rather than shopping for pets, to reduce the prevalence and knock-on effects of backyard breeding.
“Cats can live up to 20 years, so adoption is not a temporary ‘thing’ for your time in Singapore,” says Julia. “Project SOKS has a set of criteria that needs to be agreed on by any adopting family. Most importantly these include compulsory sterilisation at six months of age, and relocation as part of your family if you ever leave Singapore. Many of our kittens have grown up to become world travellers!” Fostering is also an option. “Fostering usually works well for people who have plenty of time on their hands and can contribute with intensive kitten care. It can be a very rewarding experience.” Julia and Claire find it tough to say goodbye to the kittens, but they know a better life awaits them. “Seeing our babies go off into their forever homes, to have a better chance at life is what warms our hearts the most. Seeing our kittens snuggling and playing with their new families makes the hard work and sacrifices worthwhile.”
Cat facts Cats breed prolifically in Singapore – particularly as it’s warm all year round and they go on heat in summer. Cats gestation is two months, they can get pregnant from four months of age, and can have litters between 1-7 kittens. There are around 60,000 street cats in Singapore. The Cat Welfare Society (Singapore) sterilised18,000 cats last year Community cats that have the tip of their left ear clipped have already been sterilised.

he Art of Travel – inspired by the book of the same name by Alain de Botton – is never far from our minds when we venture away from home. And art certainly confronted us in large doses on a recent visit to Sydney. Banjo Paterson really got us going. Not only because his friendly visage kept appearing before us on the odd A$10 note – and we do still prefer cash to cards or other payment forms - but because we had the privilege of visiting a place he once called home. Rockend is where A.B.’Banjo’ Paterson lived as a young man with his grandmother. Alongside the waters of Sydney Harbour, the quaint sandstone building dating back to the 1830s is classified by the National Trust. It’s situated within five acres of parkland, and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens overlooking the water. The fact that the building is now immortalised as Banjo Paterson Cottage Restaurant hardly detracts from its role as a fitting home for photographs and other memorabilia of the creative genius. As we learnt from the walls of the dining room, Banjo not only produced Australia’s best-known ballad, Waltzing Matilda but a body of work that included seven volumes of poetry and prose in many editions, The Collected Verse of A.B. Paterson, a book for children The Animals Noah Forgot (1933), and an anthology The Old Bush Songs (1905). We also read – before and after enjoying a delightful Sunday lunch – that he was very well-known for his many pieces of
journalism and reportage. He was after all a special war correspondent covering the Boer War from South Africa for The Sydney Morning Herald. But even before that he had achieved “two milestones in Australian writing”, the restaurant walls proudly proclaimed. In 1895, at the age of 31 and still in partnership in a law firm, he produced his first book, The Man from Snowy River, published by Angus & Robertson. Described as the beginning of an epoch in Australian publishing, the book sold out its first edition within a week, and went through four editions in six months, making Banjo Paterson second only to Rudyard Kipling in popularity among living poets writing in English. What more can we say about Australia’s first home-grown man of letters other than to acknowledge the foresight of those who established a restaurant in his grandmother’s harbour-side cottage, where you can enjoy the company of fellow scribes and art lovers, while partaking of tasty morsels on the table and the illuminating portraits and poetry on the walls? You can make a meal of it at the Banjo Paterson Cottage Restaurant. Look out for Rockend on Punt Road, Gladesville NSW 2111.

MOIRA COOPS STYLIST AND MAKEUP ARTIST What are your tips for remaining stylish from morning to after-party? 1. Good make-up. Primer is very important as you need a good base for concealer, foundation and powder in this heat. Outline the lips, fill them in with pencil, blot with powder then add lipstick, no gloss. Finally, false eyelashes make all the difference! 2. If drinking alcohol, make sure you’re alternating one glass of water to one glass of alcohol.
The best racing outfit accessory? Apart from Mr Tall, Dark and Handsome in a morning suit, go for a gorgeous hat from Tiffany’s or a custommade design from Philip Treacy.

ffering a plethora of water sports, adventure activities and spa offerings, plus a well-run kids’ club, The Residence is a calm, friendly oasis.
LEAVING IT ALL BEHIND A short ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and my family are docking at Bintan – the largest island in Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago. Quickly clearing customs we’re met by smiling The Residence staff, who hand us reviving lemongrassscented cold towels and fresh cookies. It’s about a 90-minute drive to the swish, new luxury resort, which boasts 127 breezy, oversized villas. We’re happy to sit back and take in the passing scenery of deep green jungle, and tranquil winding rivers. The final destination is well worth the wait. The resort lies on the remote eastern coast of the island, blessed with some of the region’s best beaches and panoramic views of the South China Sea. It’s blissfully removed from the busy golfing resorts and has a beachy, laidback vibe. The staff are mostly local, and always happy to go the extra mile for guests. Bikes are parked outside your accommodation, and it’s lovely to cycle slowly around the expansive resort. SPA SESSIONS Before checking into our villa, we grab a quick lunch from the main restaurant, The Dining Room. The meals are fresh and Indonesian-inspired, and I tuck into delicious chicken skewers, impaled on fragrant stalks of lemongrass (the resort’s signature scent!), and served with a spicy peanut dipping sauce. Sipping on a fresh watermelon juice, we gaze over untouched jungle and mountains, and enjoy the cooling sea breeze. My first stop is to the spa, with products and treatments by award-winning British spa brand, ila. Inspired by natural indigenous therapies and ancient Ayurvedic treatments, the pampering and wellness program is staffed by experienced, peaceful therapists, and features eight well appointed treatment huts. It’s hard to choose from the heavenly menu, but I settle on the signature Restu Suci (Earth Blessings) a 120-minute massage, featuring a fresh ginger and pandan foot wash in a copper bowl, resonating singing bowls and a Hawaiian style lomi lomi full
42 anza
Leave it all behind body massage, which deploys long sweeping strokes of the elbow and arm. It’s a very nice way to ease into leisurely island time. We locate our beach villa, a chic luxury pad with its own living room, enormous bathroom with freestanding tub and rain shower, and all the mod cons (hello, coffee machine). The pièce de résistance is the private plunge pool on the deck, which spills onto a sandy stretch of beach and a calm bay. There’s nothing to do but immediately sink into the cool waters and exhale. OUT AND ABOUT It’s tempting to hole up in our villa for the duration, but there’s so much to see and do, it would be a crime not to make the most of our few days away. I rise at 8am to join an open-air yoga session on a deck overlooking the ocean. Today’s class is taught by Anabel Chew of Webarre. The poses and sequences are challenging and dynamic, and it certainly wakes up my muscles for the day. Free 45-minute stretch sessions are offered daily at the resort - there’s also a full gym, if you want to offset the sundowner cocktails and delicious food. After breakfast, we head to the activities area, thoughtfully situated a distance away from the

main resort. There’s an obstacle course with challenging high and low elements, jet skis, kayaks, archery, paintball, rock climbing, wakeboarding and ATV vehicles. Whetting our appetite for adventure, my husband and I grab a couple of sturdy ATV’s and head off into the bumpy, muddy jungle track, for some rev head action. Active older kids will adore this area of the resort, while my eight-year-old is kept well entertained at the free Kakatu Kids’ Club. The club is open from 9am-6pm and keeps kids aged 3-17 busy with tie dye, tote bag painting, batik and cooking. There’s also beach marine discovery walks, volleyball, and giant board games. Although to be honest, most kids will be happy splashing in the gigantic main pool, or wading out to the double wooden swing in the middle of the shallow bay. ISLAND HOPPING Boat trips are a great way to see more of the natural beauty of the archipelago, and we head out by speed boat to nearby Mapur Island, 16 kilometres and a 45-minute-high speed ride away. Although it’s bucketing down when we leave, it miraculously clears up when we drop anchor offshore from a stunning` white sand island, famed for its rich marine life. Submerging into the warm, clear emerald waters with flippers and snorkel masks, we discover a healthy reef, teeming with colourful tropical fish. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the pristine, deserted beaches, framed by smooth boulders. Or if you’re dive certified, take a deeper look at whale sharks, manta ray, barracuda and shipwrecks. If lazy rivers are more your scene, a mangrove tour winds through stilted fishing villages and ancient mangroves. If you’re lucky you’ll spot a snake coiled in the trees, cheeky monkeys, monitor lizards and kingfishers. Night tours are magically lit up with fireflies.
CREATIVE WORKSHOPS The Residence hosts regular workshops and retreats, and we attend a two-hour botanical painting workshop and high tea with Singaporean artist Lucinda Law. Sipping on a ginger tea, it’s the perfect way to spend a drizzly afternoon, as we learn how to use watercolours to capture the stunning tropical plants and flowers that surround the resort. Our final dinner is a seafood barbecue, at the relaxed Rica Rica restaurant by the beach, where we indulge in more local Indonesian flavours including King prawn with honey and garlic sauce, red snapper with local herbs and sambals, and mushroom rice wrapped in banana leaves. The finale is a version of the beloved Chendol dessert – with green noodles, a coconut pandan custard, adzuki red beans and ginger ice-cream. It’s a sweet end to a truly decadent island escape and we all agree we’ll be back soon for a second helping.

Sloshing downriver, I glance nervously at my sevenyear-old daughter, and her brothers, 11 and 13. I ask our guide, Yuslan if mine are the youngest kids he has guided on the river. He laughs: “Oh no, we once had a five-month old baby on board.” Before I can ask who brings a baby rafting, we are entering the first rapid, amid shrieking delight from everyone. Anxiety is gone, superseded by adrenaline and the fun of a shared adventure. Rafting is a great start to a weekend in Sabah, on the island of Borneo. beginners. Indeed, everyone stays in the boat, except when kids are permitted to somersault off and float down the river in their lifejackets. Our morning adventure takes us past lush rainforest, fishermen throwing nets, and stands of giant bamboo - remnants of bamboo rafts historically used as transport. After a Malaysian barbeque lunch, we are met by guide Brendon and our airconditioned van. INTERACTIVE CULTURE Less heart-pounding but equally fun is an afternoon at Mari Mari Cultural Village. Brendon explains there are 42 main ethnic groups in Sabah, and Mari Mari engages kids in activities from the Dusun, Rungus, Lundayeh, Bajau, and the head-hunting tribe, Murut. Lizards scuttle and butterflies flit around the rainforest trails as visitors move from one exhibit to another. Kids sample freshly made biscuits and pandan juice with local honey and lemongrass,
while brave adults sip the traditional rice liquor. Everyone tries blowing a ‘poison’ dart, which is harder than it sounds. “Blow from the chest,” Brendon says, and finally the dart lodges in the coconut target. Various ethnic dances are presented, demonstrating seriously nifty footwork as performers deftly skip over moving bamboo poles on the ground. In the Murut longhouse, tribal warriors bounce on a traditional wooden trampoline, the lansaran, touching the ceiling. The warriors howl with laughter as all members of my family try and fail. SUNDOWNERS After a day in the heat, the pool at Le Meridien Hotel in KK provides a welcome afternoon dip with an island-dotted view and a happy-hour cocktail. Later, we cross the road to the outdoor bars and restaurants that line the waterfront. Here, locals and tourists alike socialise and take plenty of selfies as the sun goes down behind the nearby islands.

KK is a city of markets. Stroll through the fresh and dried seafood and head for the night market, specialising in tasty BBQ seafood. Vendors jostle for the attention of passing diners, touting their freshly caught fish, squid, lobsters and prawns, and marinated chicken wings, all cooked to order. The Handicraft (also known as Filipino) Market is here too, with plenty of cheap souvenirs for kids with pocket money. On a Sunday morning, check out the mother of all KK’s markets, the Gaya Street Sunday Market. Locals shopping for a mango tree or antique musical instruments browse alongside tourists hunting for t-shirts and fridge magnets. Hardware, pedigree cats, and knock-off ‘Star Warts’ toys are all being purchased. Our favourite is the watermelon juice. The top of the small melon is carved into a heart and presented to the buyer on a stick. Next an electric hand mixer is inserted into the melon, pulverising the contents. Add a straw and voila! Instant refreshment. RELAXING GAYA ISLAND For a complete change of pace, Gaya Island, part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Marine Park is only 20 minutes away by speed boat. Bunga Raya Resort is set by the beach in a tropical forest with wooden villas. Our huge two-bedroom villa is up a steep hill amid the leafy canopy, with ocean glimpses. Initially dreading the trudge uphill, we quickly discover the fun option of a golf buggy pick-up. Our driver Aspeh, kindly lets the kids each have a turn of “driving”
46 anza
the buggy, keeping one foot ready on the brake. The powdery beach facing the South China Sea is immaculately maintained, and the bustle of KK is out of sight and mind as visitors explore the natural surroundings. Snorkellers dot the clear water, spotting corals, rays and nemo fish. Inquisitive guests join a naturalist guided tour of the canopy walkway, four elevated suspension bridges 60 metres high, providing a bird’s eye view. Adrenaline junkies get their fix too, riding the ‘Flying Fox’ zipline through the treetops, while the lower ‘Flying Squirrel’ is a blast for younger kids.
Getting around in Kota Kinabalu is easiest with a guide and van. Brendan from Borneo Trails and Tours has a deep knowledge of Sabah borneotrails.com. More information on all things Sabah sabahtourism.com.
CONSERVATION IN ACTION Bunga Raya’s sister property Gayana Marine Resort, a ten-minute boat ride away, is home to the Marine Ecology Research Centre. Marine biologists here breed giant clams, endangered by poaching for live seafood and the aquarium trade. Two giant clam species are locally extinct and five others are becoming increasingly threatened. The conservation program here seeks to produce and then nurture baby clams onsite for around four years, before release at a safe reef. The centre also offers kids interaction with robust marine creatures in a touch tank, like starfish and sea cucumbers, or to help with rehabilitating corals. Back at Bunga Raya, we watch the sun setting behind the islands for the last time this trip, congratulating ourselves on discovering the gems of KK. Right on cue, ten huge hornbill birds pause in the trees above us, before whooshing and flapping their farewell.

WHAT IS THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE? The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) at National University Hospital (NUH) is a temporary and very special “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children being treated at NUH. We know parents want to be close to their children while they are in the hospital, and RMH helps make that happen. We offer a homelike environment where parents can find respite from the anxiety and stress of the wards. The doctors, nurses and hospital staff are here to take good care of your seriously ill children and the RMH is here to help take care of you.
WHERE IS THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE LOCATED? RMH is located at the National University Hospital, Kent Ridge. It is a small facility supporting the Paediatric ICU. The house is located on Level Four, adjacent to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit/High Dependency (PICU/HD) ward. In most cases, this means that while you are staying at the Ronald McDonald House, you will be mere steps away from your sick child.
WHAT DOES RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OFFER? We have four ensuite bedrooms with a living room, dining room, kitchenette, small library and play area for children, and laundry room. Families can cook
48 anza
simple meals in our kitchenette and get a good sleep in our comfortable beds, anytime of the day or night. RMH is a secure environment. We have volunteers and/or staff working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER PROGRAMS RUN BY THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES? We opened our first Ronald McDonald Family Room (RMFR) in January 2016. This space exclusively serves families whose children are receiving treatment in the PICU/HD ward of the hospital, providing a place of respite for even more families, allowing them to rest and recharge in between caring for their hospitalised children. We are also expanding into the area of promoting positive mental health, with the recent opening of our second Ronald in the community McDonald Family Room at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in January 2018. We are possibly the first country to set-up a family room in such an environment, and it has been received well by both parents and patients of the IMH.

he thing about speed-dating is that the box of chocolates in question moves around so fast - one never gets a real chance to get over the rejection of a bad encounter before pitching the product all over again. I really should have known better. There’s always that bitter orange chocolate that nobody wants (except that sainted aunt with the hairy upper lip who lives with four incontinent cats). I learnt this at an early age when Quality Street mixed boxes were a must have at weddings, birthdays and divorce parties. The problem is that everybody holds out for the voluptuous Dulce de Leche option in the shiny wrapping. All normally acceptable social norms are pushed aside as the guests try almost anything to take that particular confectionary out of play. When I was asked to set up a speed dating and wine themed tasting for a corporate client - little did I realise that instead of creating a fun environment where people learn a little about wine and hopefully a lot about each other - I ended up with at least three cases of runny mascara and several bruised alpha male egos. Anybody who has dealt with
alpha male egos will almost certainly agree that they are fragile things that bruise very easily and take forever to heal. I felt sure that most left that night firmly convinced that drinking wine is a ferocious contact sport where the only winners are the aesthetically blessed, and card-carrying booze hounds. This Forest Gump of a universe is all too often the cause of disappointing results when a wine bottle gets taken out and opened after a long hard day. Famous retail marketing tricks include marking prices up so they can mark them down again with much fanfare, or festooning images with little golden medals to give assurance that some unknown label from the outer Hebrides has been anointed by the gurus. Ratings are important, but at the end of the day if you are not sure of what style of wines you like, find a wine person whose opinion you trust and follow their advice. If they ever get it wrong make sure you give them hell for it. All too often we can get led astray by a shiny wrapper and we don’t take enough time to pause and consider if it’s the right choice out of the chocolate box.

ooking for a new brunch-lunch spot? Turf Club favourite Picotin has moved to the east side, now occupying a stately black and white house on Joo Chiat Road. The cool, French-accented bistro offers upmarket pub grub – including hearty breakfast options. For breakfast we tuck into fluffy American style pancakes with maple syrup and berries ($12), eggs benedict ($12) and a rib-sticking full English breakfast ($22) with perfectly cooked eggs, bacon and sides. A pretty tropical fruit platter ($12) offsets some of the damage, alongside good juices and coffees. Fancy a lie in? Bring a group for weekend lunch and you’ll find a menu of favourites from pizza and fish and chips, to burgers and more sophisticated plates like steak, whole roasted chicken and delicious salads. Afterwards, burn off a couple of calories with a game of fuse ball, pool or boules. Bring the kids – they’ll adore the relaxed open space, well priced kids meals and regular movie nights. VERDICT: An affordable bistro/bar/café which is perfect for families looking to stretch out over a leisurely weekend brunch or pub lunch.
A craft brewery Little Creatures started with a group of mates with a thirst for hop-driven pale ale. From its original home in a cavernous shed by the ocean in Fremantle, the company has gone global, with outlets in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, and now Singapore. The newly-opened Little Creatures in Club Street brings a slice of sun-kissed Aussie beer garden to the Little Red Dot. With a laidback, quirky fit-out in a restored heritage building; this is the perfect hybrid of pubcafé-restaurant. The menu is designed for sharing, so we pick off a couple of dishes from the ‘Share a Little’ section to pair with a round of house ales – including the famous pale, IPA, and Rogers. A moreish smashed avo bowl with tomatoes and pickled chilli ($18) is demolished in minutes, as are the succulent chicken and lamb skewers with spicy chimichurri sauce ($27). The chilli mussels ($29) aren’t as popular as the Hawaiian pizza with tomato, pineapple, pistachio mortadella and mozzarella ($24), or the crispy calamari with garlic, lemon and mayo ($22). Caprese salad with roma tomato, balsamic, basil, buffalo mozzarella ($18) adds freshness to the table. There are a decent range of pastas, burgers, grilled steak and lamb mains, if you prefer your own plate, and the desserts feature a warm chocolate brownie, homemade icecreams, cheesecake and carrot cake (The Aussie kind!) VERDICT: The prices are a little steep for pub fare, but it’s hard not to like this cheeky Aussie import. Dishes are fast, fresh and delicious, and go down a treat with the house brews.

PLATINUM PLATES FOR OUR 70TH ANNIVERSARY RAELENE TAN REMEMBERS PEOPLE, PLACES AND PLATES FROM HER LONG ASSOCIATION WITH ANZA.

0 years is grand, in any form! ANZA’s Platinum Anniversary is testimony to the dedication and foresight of those Aussies and Kiwis in Singapore who established the Association, and all who volunteered their time over the years, making it the much-loved organisation it is today, with over 7,000 Members. This is a prestigious, precious, rare celebration.
1970s This Adelaide-born writer and ANZA became acquainted in December 1970. I have been privileged to watch ANZA grow from a modest young adult to a venerable senior citizen. Then, ANZA was focused on Australians and New Zealanders as opposed to the vibrant international membership of today. Early gatherings took place at members’ homes, then later, when numbers grew, newcomers’ morning-teas were held at the Hollandse Club. Tea-time goodies were mainly sandwiches and cakes, with nary a spring roll or curry puff in sight. How things have changed! In the seventies, Singapore was newly independent and struggling to find her feet. Now she too has aged graciously. Aussie icon Vegemite was unheard of until my boss and I at the Australian High Commission wrote an impassioned plea to the main supermarket here and rectified that important matter. Restaurants with ‘foreign’ food were rare, though Fosters steakhouse was, and still is, around, as was Polar Puffs & Cakes with roll cakes and chicken pies.
1990s Clive and Annette Tilbrook arrived in Singapore with their daughter Madison and son Sam in 1995, from Perth, Western Australia. The vice president of a software company and the executive director of a chamber of commerce, respectively, joined ANZA to be part of the Australian community here. Clive and Annette were instrumental in the founding of ANZA cricket and heavily involved in the development of sports facilities through the ANZA Sports City project at Turf City. Having held several committee positions, they are now both honorary life members of ANZA. Early memories revolve around sports, scouts and event organising, with lots of sausages to cook, afternoon teas to prepare and food tastings to navigate. Indian food, especially at award-winning Lagnaa restaurant at 6 Upper Dickson Road, was a favourite, particularly rogan josh and butter chicken. For Chinese fare, Fatty’s at 175 Bencoolen Street was where, Annette revealed; “the food was fabulous! Especially the black pepper prawns/beef.” Tekka Market, in Little India, was the Tilbrook’s go-to place for fresh produce, including crabs for chilli crab which Annette cooked for the first time, to good reports!

Halyna and Matthew English, from Adelaide, South Australia, joined ANZA in 2004 with their children Grace, Marc and Adam. The retired lawyer and patent attorney, respectively, knew nobody upon arrival, and ANZA provided new friends, with opportunities for sports activities for their children. Halyna has been a soccer age group coordinator for about ten years, with Matt a soccer team parent and coach for several years. Their early memories include friendly coffee mornings and grand balls. Indian food was a family favourite, especially at Samy’s Curry restaurant, Dempsey Road. As to local Chinese cuisine, Halyna shared, “The best yum cha was at Yum Cha Restaurant, Trengannu Street, Chinatown, including xiao long bao and custard tarts.” Halyna joined the International Cooking Club Singapore, contributing to ‘The Red Dot Melting Pot Cookbook’ with recipes spanning 75 countries from its diverse members. LIFE-GIVING FOOD WITH THE ARRIVAL OF HER FIFTH GRANDCHILD RAELENE TAN TAKES A LOOK AT PREGNANCY NUTRITION IN SINGAPORE CULTURE.
Born in Adelaide, Raelene Tan is an etiquette consultant and food and travel writer. She has authored five books and has been a regular guest on radio and television.
CHINESE Even before pregnancy, certain foods find favour due to their auspicious meanings. These include melons and gourds (with their many seeds symbolising the advent of children), as well as chestnuts, dates and longans which are believed to strengthen the body. Chinese expectant mothers often consume tonics like chicken essence to improve blood circulation. Juices such as apple, lemon and coconut water are thought to help relieve morning sickness, as does honey water. Other foods routinely eaten are double-boiled clear soups, chicken, pork and fish, also beans, cabbage, white fungus, sesame and spinach, all thought to strengthen the body during pregnancy. Pineapple is generally not eaten, believing it may induce a miscarriage. Moving house is to be avoided, as is renovating, and the marital bed must not be moved, to minimise any disturbances. A PERANAKAN mother-to-be adopts the same guidelines as for the Chinese community. So-called ‘cooling’ foods like soya-bean milk, barley water, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes and mushrooms help keep the body well-balanced. MALAY To aid fertility, bananas, chicory, eggs and pomegranates are often consumed.

T
he arrival of grandchild number five, Ella, born to our son Darren and his wife Rachel, prompted this month’s article. ‘Tuckerbox’ has previously delved into confinement food and also celebrations to welcome newborns. This time, the focus is on food and rites during pregnancy that are commonly practised in Singapore. Generally, chicken, fish and eggs for protein, apples and oranges for vitamins, green leafy vegetables (iron), rice and noodles (carbohydrates), are eaten within the various ethnic communities.
As in Chinese culture, pineapple seems to be generally avoided during a Malay pregnancy, and the same applies to sugar cane juice. Other items customarily refrained from include bamboo shoots, tapai (fermented glutinous rice), watermelon and durian. Guava is considered favourably, as are orange juice, starfruit, spinach, broccoli, lentils and leafy green vegetables, as well as most meat and chicken. During the seventh month of pregnancy, a Malay expectant mum traditionally has her abdomen wrapped in long fabric pieces by a specially chosen person, and a coconut will be gently rolled over her tummy to assist with her well-being at this customary ceremony. INDIAN To boost fertility, milk, almonds, chickpeas and spinach are routinely consumed. During pregnancy, mutton, pulses, green leafy vegetables, sardines and black grapes are thought well of, as are rava upma (thick porridge) and idli (steamed rice cake). Conversely, pineapple, papaya, aloe vera and fenugreek are generally avoided, due to fears of miscarriage. Ceremonies take place from the seventh month onwards as a means of blessing the mother-to-be and her baby. Neem leaves and mango leaves may be seen, as they are believed to ward off evil spirits. At such ceremonies, traditional sweets are customarily served, such as kheer (pudding) and rice-based cakes. Colourful glass bangles may be presented to the guest-of-honour by guests as a form of blessing. Different types of rice may be served, depending on family customs, including sweet rice, coconut rice, milk rice or tamarind rice.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT KIM FORRESTER shares the secret to enjoying the here and now in Singapore.
I
first lived in Singapore 17 years ago. We had moved from Auckland on a twoyear expatriate contract, and I thought my “real life” would be waiting for me at our next allocated destination: Sydney. I spent those two years in Singapore living in a state of looking forward, never settling, and always making (or avoiding) decisions that were based on a temporary mindset. When the end of the contract rolled around and we were relocated – not to Sydney, but to Kuala Lumpur – I realised I had wasted two years of my life. In contrast, when we had moved to Auckland, I had assumed that we were going to settle there. I bought my dream home. I planted a rose garden, made good friends and allowed myself to fill my life with the things I love. We lived in that house for six months before being moved to Singapore. They were among the happiest, most settled, most celebrated months of my life.

58-59_Soul Fuel Sep18.indd 58
AVOID FUTURE FORECASTING The term “live in the moment” may sound superficial and cliché, but for your greatest wellbeing, this may be the most important mantra of your entire Singapore experience. You perhaps have a concept or vision of how long you are going to be here, what you need to get through those months, and what decisions are (and are not) important to make. You may be making choices as to what you can do without, or what is “worth” buying, doing or
undertaking for that particular time frame. But here’s the raw truth: you are only imagining how long you will be here. Sure, you may have current clues, or contracts, or plans … but in the end, your mental projections are not reality. They do not necessarily reflect how life (that little trickster, with its twists and turns) is actually going to play out. You are forecasting a future that is yet to unfold! LIVING IN THE RIGHT NOW As an expat, there is a very real, and very unhealthy, risk of living in what I call ‘temporary insanity’. This is when you make decisions based on the idea that you are living in a temporary home and, therefore, you place more emphasis on the supposed end-of-term, rather than your happiness right here, right now. So let’s get real. There is only one moment over which you have control, and that moment is NOW. For your greatest wellbeing, if you need to make a decision in order to feel happy NOW, secure NOW, comfortable NOW, settled NOW. Please, I beg of you, make that decision. Build a life for yourself here in Singapore: make good friends, decorate your home, adopt a pet if you want one, buy a car if you need one - be happy, settled and at peace for as long as life keeps you here. That way, when it is time to move on (whenever that may be) you will leave behind a life well lived – not some temporary existence in an uncomfortable limbo.

THE GETTING AND GIVING OF WISDOM LEE CARSLEY EXPLORES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE WISE AND HOW TO SHARE PEARLS OF WISDOM WITH OTHERS.
I
’m in Chicago finishing my Master Yoga Teacher Training and about to become a sefu (wise one). This is a huge responsibility, and it leaves me pondering which of my failings I’m going to have to face this week. I write this regular column for two personal reasons. Either I feel the need to explore something that’s relevant to my life, and in doing so, start a conversation about it with you or anyone who will listen. Or there’s something bothering me that I haven’t fully addressed, and I’m hoping the conversation will make me feel better about it – maybe even you. So this month I’m exploring what it really means to be wise? How do we build and share wisdom? How do we get it back when it begins to lose its community appeal?
THE SHARING OF WISDOM
Lee Carsley is the ANZA Yoga founder teacher, and Yoga Alliance CE trainer. When not teaching yoga to students and other teachers, she also leads meditation workshops and bespoke yoga retreats. Be the light, show the light, and travel light. anza.org.sg/groups/yoga/
60 anza
Socrates said; “the only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.” Hmmm, what exactly is the purpose of wisdom if you have to pretend to know nothing? Certainly, knowing nothing and pretending otherwise is not wise, but neither is pretending to know nothing when you do. One of the other great yogi traditions is if you have wisdom, you pass it on. Buddha said; if you knew what I know about the power of giving, you would not let a single meal pass without sharing it in some way. Like a meal, wisdom can be shared without making a triumphant announcement from on high.
The most impactful of all giving of wisdom is that which is given without need for authority, the wisdom stands on its own merits, the person giving it completely exposed. Sharing of wisdom also has to use modern processes and technologies, like the internet, as this passing of values through information becomes even more important to counterbalance the ever increasing ‘fake news’.
THE RECEIVING OF WISDOM How do we then seek out wisdom and knowledge? Get out of your comfort zone. Listen to people talk about their life and experiences, preferably people you don’t know that well. Because when we ask others we are close to about their life, we simply validate what we feel and already know. Warning: this new stuff may be uncomfortable, perhaps even terrifying. The creation of new knowledge requires finding courage in yourself in places you have never looked. No one tells you that great wisdom often means acknowledging great failings within yourself. Failings that that may never go away, either. Ultimately the open mindedness you have towards others also has to extend to yourself. Only when we accept our faults and foibles can we really make significant personal change and take steps towards true wisdom.

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL Singapore celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival on Monday 24 September. PIP HARRY takes a look at the history and meaning behind the festivities and how you can join in! CENTURIES OLD TRADITIONS
LIGHT IT UP
Held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is a modern-day celebration of a centuriesold harvest ritual, which has been going since the early Tang dynasty (618–907) From Korea to Vietnam, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, the Mid-Autumn festival is marked by various customs and festivities. In the past, families would gather to make offerings of wine, fruits such as pears, grapes, pomegranates, and of course mooncakes! to give thanks to the Gods for a good harvest, as well as enjoy a reunion with far-flung relatives. In Singapore we now associate the festival with lanterns, mooncakes, a ripe full moon, and dragons.
The Mid-Autumn festival is also known for bright, festive lanterns. The traditional variety are fashioned from simple paper and lit by wax candles, but there is also an array of very fancy, colourful wire structures which can be shaped into animals, cartoon characters and more. The Mid-Autumn Festival should not be confused with the Lantern Festival, which also falls on a lunar 15th — but in the first month of the East Asian lunar year (usually February or early March)
MARVELLOUS MOONCAKES It’s impossible to live in Singapore and not have tasted or been gifted with a mooncake, which are sold by the truckload over the Mid-Autumn Festival season. This traditional snack is believed to have originated from Yuan-dynasty revolutionaries (1271–1368), who used the pastries to pass secret messages between each other. Traditionally, mooncakes are golden pastries filled with salty egg yolks and a sticky, sweet paste made from lotus seeds or beans. Today there are lots of different fillings with wild flavours including durian, red velvet, cookie and cream, chocolate, matcha, and even champagne, gin and cider varieties! Silky, unbaked “snowskin” casings are now as popular as the traditional baked cake.
HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Since the Mid-Autumn Festival is about lunar gazing and lighting lanterns, save your celebrations until after the sun has set. Visit Chinatown to appreciate the beautiful lantern displays, take part in the atmospheric lantern parade, watch lantern painting competitions, or sample tea and mooncakes at the buzzing street bazaars. Head to Moonfest: A Mid-Autumn Celebration, a free event held at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre in Marina Bay September 21-23. Perfect for kids and families, this year’s highlights include a Hokkien opera troupe, folk music, puppetry, craft and martial arts workshops and the popular lantern walkabout along the waterfront. esplanade.com/festivalsand-series/moonfest-a-mid-autumncelebration/2018

LEARN SURF LIFESAVING SKILLS THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
Our endless summer allows us to swim year round. And living on a small island means we’re surrounded by water and plenty of opportunities to swim in the sea. Knowing how to handle yourself in open water, as well as swimming pools is vital. Nippers is great way for kids and parents to increase their awareness and skills in a beach environment – knowledge that could help save their lives and the lives of others.
MIND AND BODY #4 BUILD STRENGTH NO MATTER
WHAT YOUR APPETITE IS FOR COMPETITION
Running in sand, swimming in the ocean, paddling boards, rehearsing rescues, practicing CPR, learning signals and having adventures – Nippers is no ordinary way to get fit. Although the purpose of surf life saving is to make the enjoyment of our beaches safe, the ways to learn are so varied and challenging that it suits a variety of kids. Through both core Nipper events and many fun activities, participants will get stronger and smarter in an environment where being the best is celebrated, but so are problem-solving skills, teamwork and determination.
THE HEAT AND #2 BEAT SPEND SUNDAYS AT THE BEACH
If you’re sleeping in on a Sunday morning and you have kids, then thank your lucky stars and stop reading now. The rest of us, if you’re up early you may as well make it count. Do the hard yards to get down to Tanjong Beach at sparrow’s on the weekend and we promise you it will be worth it. There is nothing better than escaping the big city island for the smaller one, digging your toes in the sand and getting back to nature. Plus, latte’s are nearby. Refresh, reset, reconnect and relax, ready for another big week.

ATHLETICS
RUN THE TRACK LIKE AN OLYMPIAN! ANZA ATHLETICS COORDINATOR LUCY JAMES AND FAMILY VISITED AN ANCIENT RUNNING TRACK DURING A RECENT TRIP TO ATHENS, AND WONDERED IF WE MIGHT HAVE A FUTURE OLYMPIAN IN OUR MIDST…
“O
ver the summer my family and I were so lucky to visit Greece. In Athens we loved checking out all the ancient landmarks. One of our favorites was the Panathenaic Stadium – the world’s only marble stadium, built on the site of a stadium from 2,500 years ago. It was fantastic to see the kids race in the stadium itself on the hallowed track where the first modern Olympians competed more than a century ago! The stadium was used as an Olympic venue in 2004 and is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon. It is also the last venue in Greece from where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.

on the fence about whether to register your child for ANZA Athletics then come down for a free trial. Drop us an email at athletics@anza.org.sg and get ready to give it a go – they’re sure to love it! At ANZA Athletics children get to learn the basic skills of track running, hurdles, discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump. They’re exposed to all of these events during a six-week rotating program - learning new skills and building on others over successive weeks and seasons. Emphasis is given to participation, sportsmanship and personal improvement and parents are involved in the program as voluntary helpers or officials. They share in many experiences with the children and its fun for everyone. The social aspect of ANZA Athletics is just as important as the competitive aspect, with many of the athletes becoming friends over the season, and maintaining those friendships as they come along to Athletics over successive seasons.”

CYCLING
‘ROUND THE ISLAND’ – AUSTRALIA ANZA Cycling members TERESA and RON HARDING are currently cycling their way around the wide brown lands of Australia.
D
uring the Dimbulah coffee stop following a regular ANZA Cycling ‘Round the Island (RTI) there was some discussion about doing an RTI in other countries. Of course, Australia came up as the ultimate island challenge, but we laughed the idea off at the time. When the opportunity came up to take an exit package from work, and as we already had a plan to tour Australia at some stage, things started to fall into place. Cycling around Australia ensured the pace was slow enough to take it all in, and we were fit enough to do it, so why not?
PLANNING AND PREPARATION Next we set about detailing the stopping points and it quickly became clear that there were several more remote bush areas and we would need to carry a lot of water and camping gear. What we really love about cycling is the freedom and travelling at a reasonable speed, and we were reluctant to strap our bikes with heavy panniers, which would weigh us down and change the experience. We both also love our food and a diet of dried or canned food was not so appealing. Luckily for us, some friends were interested in driving a support
Sightseeing was as important as the challenge of cycling, so we set ourselves the following criteria:

2
Averaging 130km per day (starting early to get to our next destination around lunchtime with ~5 hours cycling on each riding day)
3
Sealed roads only, and hugging the coast as much as possible. This pretty much defined the route.

vehicle, and a plan was finalised to have campervan or motorhome support for a great deal of the route. We could cover from Cairns right around to Adelaide. From Adelaide up the east coast to Cairns it’s highly populated and easy to find Airbnb’s for the overnight stops. Weather-wise we needed to cover the Top End (Cairns to Exmouth) in the dry season (May to October) and to tie in with some other commitments we went for the earlier of these months.
Our favourite places so far have been Lake Argyle, hot springs in Mataranka and Katherine, Katherine and Geikie Gorges, Cable Beach, as well as the stunning remote beaches in Western Australia. The mining trail was very interesting and the camaraderie in the small towns and from fellow travellers is most generous and genuine.
When all was planned and prepared, we decided to do a 1000km test run from Brisbane to our current home just south of Mackay. This was to be sure we could back up 130km + rides and ensure we had all we needed. This proved successful, with some valuable learnings, and we went ahead to fix the remainder of the trip starting early May.
Riding-wise, we have been impressed with the condition of the roads, as well as the room given by the road trains (who are very good drivers!). So far, there have been few hills and it is the wind that is our friend or foe and has made the most difference to the time we need each day. Riding through the Kimberley’s has definitely been the riding highlight so far. Next up we have the Ningaloo Reef and the Coral Coast, which we are really looking forward to. We’re happy that our riding pace allows for the the right level for progress (including sightseeing) and to keep our bodies on song for the long haul! The Nullarbor will be a big challenge we are looking forward to early September and then the Eyre Peninsula for the first time. We will take in as many sights as possible along the way.
ON THE ROAD Well over two months in (out of the approximate six months total) we have completed over 6500km of the ~16000km trip and are feeling great. We have learned so much about Australian history and sights and uncovered so much more we didn’t know about. The weather has been awesome, with beautiful sunny days leading to clear star filled nights.
Teresa and Ron are capturing their trip (technical cycling details, as well as sightseeing) on YouTube channel Grand Cycle Tours, where you can follow their progress around Australia’s vast coastline and outback.

ANZA SOCCER GIRL POWER! ANZA SOCCER’S MATILDA’S SQUAD HAVE STARTED THEIR NEW SEASON, BUT HOW DOES KICKING GOALS ON THE FIELD, HELP GIRLS KICK GOALS IN LIFE?
“Studies shows girls who play soccer are more self-confident.” – Anita Neville
A
NZA Soccer’s Matildas teams are increasingly competitive, not just in the club’s Saturday league, but in regional competition too. The club’s girls-only programme for U6 to U12’s has grown from strength-to-strength, and with a new girls coach joining the club this year, the season ahead promises even more fantastic results. “Soccer has become an increasingly popular game for girls,” says ANZA Soccer’s Anita Neville. “And for good reason. Research conducted by the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) shows that the game builds girls self-confidence more than any other sport.” The study was conducted by psychologists who surveyed 4,128 girls and teens in Denmark, the UK, Germany, Spain, Poland and Turkey. Results showed that young female soccer players felt less self-conscious, overcame a lack of selfconfidence and showed more confidence on and off the field. The study was part of UEFA’s efforts to engage more girls in the game through their “Together #WePlayStrong” campaign, which aims to make football the number one participation sport for girls and women in Europe by 2022.

ANZA Soccer has been developing its girls’ programme, and in the 2018/19 season our girls will have a dedicated Head Coach. The ANZA Matildas have already shown their skills and determination. In the 2017/18 season teams competed in the International Girls Football Festival for the first time, bringing home silverware for all three age groups, with two Cup final wins and one Plate victory. In another first, a Matildas team won the U10s league. “If you are looking for a sport that helps build confidence, teaches team work, improves overall health, all in a club where friendship and community are key values then the ANZA Matildas could be the place for your daughter, sister or friend,” says Anita.

NETBALL
COACH RULES SINGAPORE NETBALL HEAD COACH, NEW ZEALANDER NATALIE MILICICH IS GEARING UP FOR THIS MONTH’S M1 ASIAN NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS. SHE TALKS ABOUT HER CAREER IN THE SPORT AND GIVES VALUABLE ADVICE TO OUR YOUNG ANZA NETBALL PLAYERS FOR THE SEASON AHEAD.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE GAME? I started playing netball when I was just five years old. I love that there are many life skills you learn playing netball such as leadership, comradery and long friendships. I also love the challenge and competitiveness of the sport.
HOW DID YOU MAKE THE SWITCH TO COACHING? Yvonne Willering (former Silver Ferns coach) asked me to coach a North Harbour representative age group team and I decided to take up the opportunity. We won a national title and I wanted to see what more I could do with my coaching. I loved seeing the players grow throughout the campaign. I’ve coached many levels in NZ from Secondary Schools, Premier Club, National age group teams, National Opens Provincial sides, and Beko - which is the development league for ANZ Premiership.
HOW DID YOU COME TO BE APPOINTED COACH FOR THE SINGAPORE NATIONAL TEAM? The advertisement was brought to my attention by Netball NZ and I was very keen to apply. I was humbled and excited when I was appointed.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE AND ARE YOU ENJOYING IT?

I’ve been in Singapore for nearly 11 months and I’m really enjoying being here. I love the food and the many contrasting cultures. I’ve also enjoyed being part of the different celebrations, which have been exciting and very different.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AND DREAMS FOR THE SINGAPORE NETBALL TEAM? To win the M1 Asian Netball Championships and qualify for the World Cup. Our team plays with a lot of passion and my dream would be to win as the host nation. I believe we are in a great position to win and that we will then head to the World Cup; the players have worked very hard and they are very smart players.
WHO ARE THE WORLD’S BEST NETBALL TEAMS RIGHT NOW? There are several strong teams including England, Australia, Jamaica and NZ, and also up-and-coming teams like South Africa and Malawi, which makes for great international competition. The reality now in netball is that history does not matter; a lot of countries are constantly improving.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNG NETBALLERS AT ANZA? Put in the hard work, keep learning and have a growth mindset, and you can become an elite netballer and play for your country.
HOW CAN ASPIRING PLAYERS RISE TO BECOME NATIONAL PLAYERS? The feeling of representing your country can really push you to want it – so find what motivates you and remind yourself of this every day.
WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE COACHING GOAL? Right now, it is to win the M1 Asian Netball Championships and ultimately to remain the top Asian country in the World rankings.
The M1 Asian Netball Championships is happening at the Singapore Sports Hub at OCBC Arena from 1-9 September. Singapore is aiming for a top two finish at the tournament, which will earn them a ticket to the Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, next year. Tickets from apactix.com

CARINA MCWHINNIE NEWCOMER CARINA MCWHINNIE SPREADS HER WINGS IN PANGDEMONIUM’S STARCATCHER, A FIVE-TIME TONY AWARD-WINNER PREQUEL TO THE PETER PAN LEGEND, WITH A SINGAPOREAN TWIST.
TELL US ABOUT THE SHOW? Peter and the Starcatcher is a full-on funtastical adventure! We follow the young Starcatcher-in-training, Molly Aster and three orphan boys who go on a secret mission across the seas and off to faraway lands. There are lots of mermaids, pirates, lost boys and magical dust. It’s a show for adults and kids. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? I’m playing the role of Molly - a young girl who loves adventure and stories. She is smart, loyal, and a natural leader. I’m the only female cast member and to do that you’ve got to be brave, and Molly is definitely a courageous one! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH PANGDEMONIUM? I’ve always wanted to work with Pangdemonium, and I am so grateful to have the chance to finally work with them. Their plays tug at your heartstrings, and I always leave feeling inspired, motivated, and wanting to make a difference. WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE ACTING DREAM? I aspire to become a professional voiceover artist for cartoons. Some of my favourite voices are Mickey Mouse, Bubbles (Powerpuff Girls) and Jimmy Turner (Fairly Oddparents). WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW? I’m a self-taught calligrapher. Also, when I was younger I told myself that if I wasn’t going to make it as an actor, I would be a wedding planner or interior designer. I totally have a knack for it.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY? I love this question because it’s always fun to explain. So, I am originally from Scotland and Java, Indonesia, but I grew up in Bali. Yes, I am an island girl. Now here is the fun part, I was born in Saudi Arabia! I have been based in Singapore for about six years now. The first three years were spent completing my acting degree at LASALLE. Then I joined Madame Tussaud’s as a performer, and became a Speech and Drama Teacher. DID YOU ENJOY WORKING AS AN ENTERTAINER FOR CHILDREN’S PARTIES? Absolutely! I’m basically a 3D cartoon character in real life! It was my greatest joy to work with children and better yet, dressing up for them at their parties as their favourite Disney characters.

Shopping
I’m kind of a shopaholic and Singapore has some of the best shopping! So, you’ll find me lurking around the shops ‘til I drop!
