EDITOR’S NOTE

SEPTEMBER 2017

“Easy is not an option.. No days off..Never Quit..Be Fearless.. Talent you have Naturally..Skill is only developed by hours and hours of Work.” Usain Bolt

THE ANZA TEAM

This past month we’ve witnessed the retirement of one of the behemouths of sport. Someone who transcended from being an athlete to a legend; Usain Bolt. His personality and presence made him larger than life both on the track and in the spotlight - and he was always vocal about the hard graft behind the scenes that added to his victories. The eight-time Olympic gold medalist put sprinting on the centre stage and it’s safe to say that there will never be another like him. The hardwork, preparation and sacrifice that contributed to Bolt’s triumphs are commitments mirrored in all success stories, not just those in sport. Which is why our take on this, our Performance Issue, covers more than the obvious. I spoke to several people, all who have achieved a great deal in their industry with accolades that show they’ve reached the top of their game. Their occupations may be very different, but they all share a commonality of industrious commitment contributing to their stand-out accomplishments. To be more literal to our theme, we take a look at the venues that host some great performances here in Singapore. We are so fortunate to have incredibly-designed spaces and exceptional creative teams bringing the best there is to The Little Red Dot whether that’s international acts or local talent. There’s still plenty to see this year, so mark your diaries.

And then we have the pure theatre of F1 that comes to our shores this month; I am a self-confessed petrol head who misses driving hugely so I can’t wait for the roar of those engines come September 16. We’re celebrating a decade of this iconic nighttime race with the ten best things to catch over that weekend, including an interview with Perth-ian and Red Bull driver, Daniel Ricciardo. The Jan/Feb edition (how scary is it to think that 2018 is within our grasp?) will be focused on our entrepreneurial spirit; how we can turn our dreams into reality, whether that’s the table-top business you’ve been playing with or looking at that next career step, so we’ll draw on more of the “hard work” attitude in that issue. But, for now, it’s important to remember that whatever point we are at in life, it really is a performance. As Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players”. We all have the opportunity that our actions contribute to the Big Act of our life, so work hard – play hard – and adopt an Oscar-worthy role.

ALLIED WORLD Q&A WITH YVETTE TEMPLAR, VICE PRESIDENT MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS, ALLIED WORLD What do you feel is the greatest advantage to an expat living and working in Singapore? Where do I start! I’d probably say being part of an open, friendly community – whether that be at work, across a business network, with kids and family or with interests or hobbies you have – wherever you find your groove in Singapore, there’s people who are in similar situations or with similar interests willing to share their time or experiences. It’s a great place to be yourself. How does Allied World help with the challenges an expat faces in moving to a new country? We have a wide range of personal insurance products that will help expats as they settle into Singapore. So even though we may not be a household name (yet!) I’m sure some people would have come across us via our network of agents when looking for their home, travel, personal accident, motor or domestic helper insurance. We’ve also been keen supporters and sponsors of the ANZA cycling club for nearly three years and based on the feedback from the club, we developed a specific ‘Roof and Pedals’ product that combines home insurance with high-value bike insurance. We’re putting together a promotion which we will launch through ANZA member benefits soon! September 2017 anza

SEPTEMBER 2017

“For those of you like me, who love seeing people do their thing when they’re the best in the world...”

G’day and welcome to the September issue of our ANZA Magazine, the Performance Edition. For our “Peak Performance” main feature, the magazine team interviewed a bunch of people from varying industries, but all who share being at the top of their game as the theme that unites them. We have words of wisdom from AFL legend Spida Everitt, West Side Story actress Jenna Burns, entrepreneur Joe Barrett and Michelin-starred chef Sam Aisbett, on what they feel makes a great performance and what they do to prepare – whether it’s for a major business pitch, the big match or for a stage debut. For those of you like me, who love seeing people do their thing when they’re the best in the world, even when you can’t even imagine doing it yourself, we have the “The Right Formula” piece. Celebrating a decade of the F1 here in Singapore, we interview Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. Danny came third in 2014 and then second in the last two races. Last year’s race in particular was amazing for Australian fans, and I was on my feet during Ricciardo’s final lap when he closed a huge gap to half a second. Fingers crossed for this year. We also take to the stage for “Curtains Up” and check out the best places for the performing arts in Singapore, from the Mastercard Theatre at MBS, to the charm of The Projector.

To explore peak performance in chilling out and travel, we enjoy the dramatic interiors of Hotel Vagabond in the Jalan Besar area for a staycation and hear about the wonders of Italy’s lesser known southern coast. We also devote two pages to style to help inspire us for Fashions on the Field at the Annual ANZA Melbourne Cup Race Day. Head to anza.org.sg/mpage/ MelbCup2017 for details on registering for the style stakes and buying tickets for what is always a great day out. We have columns from our regular contributors and, also a feature from a talented member of the ANZA Writer’s Group, Lena Dobreci. Here at ANZA, generations of volunteers and staff over six decades have selflessly brought their time and expertise to the community to make the expat experience that much more enjoyable – and that includes the contributions to this magazine. Thank you all.

DANCING UNDER

THE STARS MAY YEN CHEAH WILL TAKE TO THE STAGE THIS MONTH FOR BALLET UNDER THE STARS, DANCING SEVERAL SEGMENTS INCLUDING THE PAS DE TROIS IN SLEEPING BEAUTY.

1-3 & 8-10 SEP FORT CANNING GREEN

SAVE THE DATE AFL GRAND FINAL 30 SEPTEMBER

MELBOURNE CUP 7 NOVEMBER

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FIRST START DANCING? My parents sent my two sisters and I for ballet and piano lessons from a young age, so it was never really my decision to start dancing. I remember enjoying both from the beginning though. WHEN DID YOU KNOW IT WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO PURSUE PROFESSIONALLY? I was never that little girl who always dreamed of becoming a ballerina. In my childhood I hardly saw any professional ballet productions and so the image of doing ballet as a career was foreign to me. I always loved ballet but only as a hobby so before starting my full-time training at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), I really didn’t know if I would enjoy dancing for nine hours a day, five days a week! But after just one week I thought: “Wow, I can definitely see myself doing this!” HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE CHARACTERS AND THEN TRANSLATE THAT EMOTION THROUGH YOUR DANCING? I ask myself who the character is; what is her relationship to the main role, and what does she bring to the whole ballet?

12

So for Kitri’s friend [in Don Quixote, a part she is playing in Ballet Under The Stars], she is a close friend but somehow craves some attention for herself. She is also playful and cheeky. If there isn’t a specific character, I would take into consideration the music and costume. How does the music affect my mood, what emotions does it stimulate? Also costume does help portray a role, for example Organ Concerto’s long black dress causes me to portray a sense of darkness and internal tension, as compared to a dazzling white tutu for Sleeping Beauty’s Pas de Trois where I want to portray radiant elegance. DO YOU GET A BUZZ FROM PERFORMING? For me I get a buzz from the whole week and not just the time spent on stage. Of course the shows are like a reward; the cherry on top, but it’s the journey too. We create, explore, refine, and then finally we get to give a gift to the audience and share it with them. Also, if I have done a good show, the buzz for me is more an internal sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, than applause from an audience.

WHAT MAKES BALLET UNDER THE STARS PARTICULARLY SPECIAL? It’s one of my favourite seasons of the year; you will love the atmosphere. Get in early to the park to set up your picnic, lay back and enjoy the last rays of sunshine with food and wine, watch the kids run around the grass while catching the dancers warming up on stage. Then, as night falls, relax and enjoy the show with your friends. If you come early, you can get rather close to the front of stage and try to catch our eye! WHAT DO YOU SAY TO ENCOURAGE THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH BALLET TO ATTEND? Like all things new, the first step is just to try it. Observe the movement, technicality and athleticism of the dancers. When the audience starts clapping when a dancer does 32 fouetté turns; this is a clear indication that this is a very difficult step. And lastly, don’t think about it too hard! You don’t have to over-analyse; let the dancers reflect the music, or vice versa, how the music persuades the dancers. Like any artwork, you will like some, and dislike others.

Wednesday

TIME: 9am-12.30pm MEET: 8.40am, outside carpark entrance to Newton Hawker Market. COST: Members $65, non-members $70.

The post War years, especially the 1950s, saw Singapore’s ‘Golden Age of Cinema’, dominated by two movie companies: Shaw, and Cathay. Join us on this entertaining tour that begins at the Shaw Studios, right where many a Singaporean-starlet’s movie dreams took off. We’ll then step aboard the bus which will take us to famous sites committed to ‘celluloid’ on movies made in Singapore. Next, it’s onto a fascinating wander around the Cathay Museum where you can take a nostalgic look at the history of the Lokes – the First Family of Singaporean film – and view plenty of movie memorabilia. The tour will then take you to The Projector on Beach Road, which shows cult movies and is one of Singapore’s hidden gems. We’ll stop for a chat with a film producer who also helps to run the Singapore International Film Festival. In recent years the movie industry here has enjoyed something of a revival with many Singaporean directors such as Jack Neo, Eric Khoo, Royston Tan, Anthony Chen and Ken Kwek releasing films to not only national, but also international, acclaim. So get your questions ready!

TIME: 9am-12.30pm MEET: 8.50am at entrance to Labrador MRT. COST: Members $25, non-members $30

Join us on an ANZA Action walk and discover historic Kent Ridge Park where one of the last battles for Singapore was fought during World War II. Let your feet do the work and we will donate $20 on your behalf to ANZA charities. From Labrador MRT, we will stroll uphill to the Alexandra Arch, walking past buildings that were originally used as the Officers’ Mess for Gillman Barracks, and beautiful black and white homes built for officers on Hyderabad Road. Our route will then take us into Kent Ridge, which features a high biodiversity of wildlife, and make our way towards the eastern side of the park. Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy panoramic views. Returning along the Canopy Walk – an elevated boardwalk that links Kent Ridge to Hort Park – we’ll stop to relive the history of World War II at the “Reflections Bukit Chandu” a restored black and white colonial bungalow. Afterwards, it’s down Pappy’s Road to Pasir Panjang Hawker Market to grab a quick bite to eat (not included in tour price). Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for all weather. This walk is approx. 5-6 km, has hills and steps, which, while they are short with ample time for recovery, they do pack a punch!

Tuesday

TIME: 9.30am-noon MEET: 9.20am, lobby of Fullerton Bay Hotel, 80 Collyer Quay. Nearest MRT, Raffles Place. COST: Members $70, non-members $80

Join us for this rare opportunity to experience the combination of two iconic Fullerton Hotel Tours: The Fullerton Bay Maritime Journey and The Fullerton Monument. Meeting in the Foyer of the Fullerton Bay Hotel at the concierge desk, come and discover the unique story of the Fullerton Bay Hotel’s maritime history, before continuing to the landmark Fullerton Hotel, nestled in the heart of Singapore’s historic civic and business district. Hear how the hotel was originally built as the General Post Office to cope with the brisk trade which sprang up along the Singapore River after the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles and which necessitated the need for postal services. Learn of the Fullerton Building’s role in the World War II as a place of refuge and be taken to historical points of interest including The Lighthouse Restaurant & Rooftop Bar which once housed a beacon that guided ships safely into port until 1979. After the tour, we can sit back and relax in the Post Bar in the Fullerton Hotel Music Room. Here we will be served a delightful morning tea consisting of coffee, tea and cake. Delicious.

s so many people travel at this time of year, it was a smaller-than-usual group that gathered for our mid-July Casual Coffee morning. However, the fewer numbers didn’t reduce our coffee consumption and we were none the less, just as chatty. Our numbers were back to normal later in the month though as 22 ANZA friends came together and we also welcomed some new members to our group too. Whether you can come along for the whole session or just drop in for a while,

all are welcome at our twice-monthly Casual Coffee mornings. And just a quick reminder for next month: Remember, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we will again be holding a special “Wear PINK” Casual Coffee on Wednesday 11 October in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation. We’ll be meeting at the earlier time of 9.30am upstairs at Boomerang, Boat Quay. Keep an eye on the website, weekly eNews update and next month’s magazine for further details.

FAREWELLS & WELCOMES Sadly, June and July were months to wave goodbye to some of our colleagues as they completed their time on the Little Red Dot. However, as we farewelled outgoing Deputy High Commissioner Adrian Lochrin, we were pleased to welcome his replacement, Kate Duff. Prior to moving to Singapore, Kate was Assistant Secretary of the North East Asia Branch in the North Asia Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra, and had also been posted to Indonesia. Recent roles have included establishing and leading the New Colombo

Plan Secretariat; being the Assistant Secretary of the South East Asia Bilateral Branch, and covering political and economic interests in nine South East Asian countries. She joined DFAT in 1995, and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Letters degrees from the University of Melbourne and a Masters from Monash University.

IT’S LADIES NIGHT Where there’s Smoke, there’s mid-week girls’ cocktails – or so it was back in July at Smoke & Mirrors for the monthly ANZA Ladies Night. The hugely popular ANZA event was hosted by the stunning bar that sits atop the National Gallery. With vistas over the Padang to the

Esplanade and Marina Bay Sands, as well as incorporating some of the historical colonial buildings of this part of town, this bar really boasts a drink with a view. Plenty of glamour, lots of chatter and a great opportunity to catch up with the girls; we must do it again soon.

AN Z A ACTION

Get With the Beat FIONA HARRISON TRIES TAIKO DRUMMING AT THE PEOPLE’S ASSOCIATION INCLUSIVE AWARDS & APPRECIATION NITE.

ANZA Action is the community affairs arm for ANZA, supporting charities in Singapore.

ne and two and three and four. One and two and… “What have you done this time?” asked my husband as I ground to a halt mid-way through our first practice session of Taiko drumming. David and I had signed up to perform at the People’s Association INClusive Award and Appreciation Nite, a ceremony celebrating the work of Integration and Naturalisation Champions (INCs), Grassroot Leaders and Immigrant Associations’ Representatives. The INCs play a pivotal role in reaching out to newcomers in Singapore and facilitating integration into the wider community by forging bonds and friendships throughout the country. The aim is to form a more inclusive and caring community and in our group of drummers alone, you could see the varied associations involved including those from Australia, America, India, Turkey and Singapore to name a few. It seemed like a fun idea at the time to learn a new skill and to perform at such a worthwhile evening. However, as I missed another beat, I wasn’t quite so sure. Originating in Japan, Taiko was allegedly used as a battlefield instrument to intimidate and scare the enemy, to issue commands and to co-ordinate movements. I have to say, I severely doubted my drumming style at that point would have anywhere near that same effect… I just hoped I would be in-time on the night. The word Taiko means “fat drum” and during our practices, the drums themselves were covered. It wasn’t until the night of our performance, when the covers were removed, that we got to hear ourselves enmasse for the first time. The noise was deafening and you can only imagine how

effective it was against the opposition on battlefields all those years ago – for us, it was definitely thrilling. Once the performance was concluded, we all returned to our table to enjoy a well earnt dinner. The Chinese menu consisted of Chinese Cold Dish Combination, Crispy Roast Chicken with Crackers, Double Boiled Winter Melon Soup, Wok Fried Shrimp with Cashew Nuts in Yam Ring, Braised Bailing Mushroom with Spinach, Braised Ee Fu Noodles with Chives, and Bubur Hitam with Coconut Milk. Drumming makes you hungry! 20 INCs were recognised for their work here in Singapore during the ceremony at the Orchard Country Club in front of nearly 700 people and the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Grace Fu. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of INCs, Ms Fu also launched a commemorative book, compiled of stories from INCs who have worked hard to champion integration in the local community. It was definitely a heartwarming event. And the lesson learnt? Two people that do not play any musical instruments and have never performed in front of a crowd may wish to consider more than two practise sessions prior to performing in front of 700 people... On a more serious note though, the champions are the volunteers that give their own time and put in a lot of personal effort. The night was a wonderful event which acknowledged their contributions and celebrated the success of the Integration and Naturalisation Champions throughout all walks of Singaporean life. Thank you to all the champions out there.

PE AK PERFORMANCE

What goes into a stand-out performance? What takes something – or someone – from good to great? Charley Larcombe talks to people at the top of their game, from entrepreneurs to actresses, artists to chefs, to discover what takes them to the next level, and what they learn along the way.

The Sportsman SPIDA EVERITT The former AFL ruckman retired from the professional sport in 2008 after 291 games, and has since been involved with many radio and TV shows. Catch him at ANZA’s AFL Grand Final event this month.

A stand-out performance is all about your preparation and being aware of the five Ps: practice preparation prevents poor performance.

If you are honest with yourself, then you know what your ‘great’ is, but it’s others that acknowledge the performance most.

Now it’s show-time.

Make a brave decision. I question if I would have been picked up by St. Kilda had I not decided to change from one local football club to another when I was 15.

My wife, Sheree has helped me realise my potential. She is a hard task master, but also gives me the time and encouragement to make sure everything is done perfectly.

For your big pitch, game, whatever, don’t waste all the hard work you’ve put in; push it out and play hard.

The Creative

Social entrepreneur, founding partner of VSS: Vision Strategy Storytelling, filmmaker and eco-campaigner, Jacqui – who’s on the Forbes 30 Under 30 List – has also launched the Singapore Eco Film Festival (1-3 September).

Authenticity is without question the key ingredient to performing well.

Find ways to be constantly giving back. Whether that’s empowering your team, supporting your industry ecosystem, or mentoring those who are trying to get their foot in the door. Become an organisation or leader that helps others and you will stand out.

Without education, you will be taken advantage of. “Creatives” too often like to believe they “don’t care” about money, which is a huge loss. We need highly skilled creatives and compassionate sustainability

advocates who truly care about the planet to become the business leaders of tomorrow – and for that, we need to understand how economics work.

A clear mind is overrated. I’m a night owl, a scatter brain and always have 200 things going on in my head, but because of this selfawareness, I’ve also been able to put the tools in place to keep organised.

A very, very nice bottle of red wine is a huge help in 9/10 situations when delivering bad news.

who to watch The Championship battle at this point of the season is between Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes AMG Petronas’ Lewis Hamilton. So keep your eyes peeled for drama. Also Hamilton’s new teammate Valtteri Bottas is earning his stripes – whilst keeping the politics that always surrounded Hamilton and Nico Rosberg free from the podium this season. And of course, cheer like mad for Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo who won at the Azerbaijan track earlier this year and is showcasing some extraordinary driving for 2017.

2.

changing gear

Technical regulations got a shake-up this season so expect to see more aerodynamic cars on Singapore’s roads this F1 – the more aggressive design has seen upwards of 3-seconds taken off lap times. The cars are also wider than 2016 and the tyre widths have seen a 25% increase – wait to see the sparks fly. For Singapore itself, organisers have launched a new 10th grandstand, Empress, which offers views of the cars slowing down between turns 11 and 12 before entering the vaulted arch of Anderson Bridge. There’s also the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia as support races if you petrol heads need more than F1 machines to look at.

build it, they will come The first night race in F1 history took place ten years ago here in Singapore and every year the team create an incredible spectacle in the heart of the city. It takes five months to build the Marina Bay Circuit, starting at the pit straight, the only permanent section, and of course including the lighting system to light up the streets of Singapore. 1,600 lighting projectors, 108.4km of power cables and 240 steel pylons are placed around the track.

8.

words of the wise

Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd, Colin Syn is in charge of all things technical. How complicated a civil engineering challenge is building a circuit on city streets? Having to create a state-of-theart Formula One circuit right in the middle of a living, functioning city, we had to strike a balance between

the city continuing its day-to-day life, and us creating the event inside it. The two biggest initial challenges were developing a lighting system to meet the stringent safety requirements of the FIA, as well as the assembling and disassembling of a temporary street circuit in just a few months – all with minimal disruption. Have you ever driven around the Marina Bay Street Circuit yourself? I’ve been driving around the

circuit almost every day as the track is on Singapore’s public roads. I’ve also had the opportunity to drive on the Formula One track on race day. It’s amazing to see the packed grandstands and the crowd waving as you pass by. It’s very heartwarming to personally experience the electrifying atmosphere when thousands of race fans are gathered together. It gives you a taste of what the F1 drivers must feel!

speed demon

Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo hails from Perth and so considers the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix as one of his home races. We talk to the 28-year-old about the road to Marina Bay.

WHAT’S THE MORALE LIKE WITHIN THE TEAM? It’s strong. I think after the start of the season, like testing and the first couple of races, everyone was a bit down, a bit frustrated as it looked like another kind of long season ahead, if you will. But I feel like everyone has picked themselves up since then; it’s all positive for now. I think everyone’s acknowledged the position we’re in and they know that if we want to make it better for ourselves then we’ve got to put the work in and that’s also from my side as well. These cars have been a bit trickier to drive and maybe the balance isn’t perfect so I’ve got to figure it out a bit more and put the work in to make it better for myself also. WHAT’S YOUR MINDSET LIKE WHEN THE EUROPEAN SEASON CLOSES AND YOU HAVE THE FLYAWAYS AHEAD WITH SINGAPORE UP FIRST? You kind of reset and go again for another push, one last push I guess. And Singapore requires more preparation as well because it’s normally the longest and hottest race of the year. So physically you kind of take a reset and start-up again mentally. It’s obviously nice for me going that way because it’s closer to home and I enjoy those few circuits. SINGAPORE WILL BE THE BIGGEST FITNESS TEST THIS YEAR. HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THAT? I think it’s a challenge I’ll certainly welcome. The last few years I’ve put 40

emphasis on that with my training and my preparation before Singapore and I think the results I’ve shown being on the podium three years in a row shows that. So that’s an area of the sport which I feel like I thrive off. I’m not saying I’m the fittest guy on the grid or the only guy that trains but when it comes to that kind of specific training, I feel like I’m definitely putting in what I have to and making sure I’m prepared as well, if not better, than anyone. The aim is to be better prepared than everyone. It’s certainly one [race] that if a driver doesn’t quite take some of those real physical ones seriously, if they’re out enjoying their weekends more than they should, then I definitely feel it will show this year. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE EVENT HAS BROUGHT TO THE SPORT? I think since Singapore has been on the calendar, it has certainly brought interest from all over the world. It’s actually a race that everyone talks about. Obviously it’s close to home, close to Australia; you know we get a lot of Aussies flying in for that race, but also Europe and even in the States. It’s kind of like one of these iconic races now, which is pretty impressive for a track which hasn’t even hosted 10 Grands Prix yet. I think hats off to them, they do it really well. I think the weekend runs awesome and for us to kind of juggle that European time zone

whilst we’re out there is unique so I think that’s cool. And the track’s built a bit of a reputation for being probably the most physical one and the longest race of the year. There’s a lot of hype and excitement that comes with that race and I certainly enjoy it on the calendar. WAS YOUR SECOND PLACE LAST YEAR YOUR BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT AT THE MARINA BAY STREET CIRCUIT? That was great. I feel like at least since I’ve been with Red Bull [Racing], and had a chance to race closer to the front, I’ve always had some good races in Singapore. But last year was cool to at least obviously keep the race going until the end and give everyone hope that maybe I’ll get him, maybe I’ll get him. But again physically that was rewarding for me to be able to push that hard until the end and show that I wasn’t fading or anything. That was a bit of a testament to the work I put in before the race also so it was rewarding, and people were like it sucks, it was a shame you didn’t win, this and that, but I was happy. I would’ve loved to have won, sure, but I definitely left Singapore feeling pretty content with how the weekend and the race went.

POUND AROUND PUNGGOL We’re spoilt for choice for outdoor space in Singapore and get to balance city life with the benefits of fresh air. Charley Larcombe heads up to Punggol for a run around the river. I grew up in the country, dressed in jeans or tatty shorts with boots strapped to my feet. I was running around the great outdoors with horses and dogs until I first spied stilettos and realised they didn’t work quite so well when mucking out stables and I’d have to choose; mud or Manolos. I never really did make a decision though; wellies don’t suit the boardroom and heels don’t help you run faster, but despite a penchant for a towering instep, I’ve always loved being outside more. Before making it to Singapore, I lived in Dubai and I loved aspects of that lifestyle – being tax-free is pretty hard to argue with – but it wasn’t ‘til I came visiting to Singapore that I realised quite how much I missed the parks and greenery and that feel of non-air-con-air. I love the fact that living here, we can balance Big City Living with Big Country Walks, and I try and take advantage of this whenever I can. Having been scared off of hiking around the McCritchie Reservoir – have you seen that *#@$%&*^ video of the cobra and python having a fight on one of the footpaths?! – I went off to explore Punggol in the north east of the island. The weather was filthy, but the ominous black clouds and a stiff breeze whipping off the river gave wings to my trainers and

42

I ran (slash-j-alked – a nice adverb that The Boyfriend uses to make me feel better that I can’t run a marathon) around a great loop which I thoroughly recommend you check out if you haven’t ventured there yet. Get the Grab (the North East Line does have a stop but it’s a good 40mins walk down to the river) to drop you off at Whisk and Paddle, a coffee shop on Tenbing Lane. Start there but don’t be tempted in for breakfast just yet. Head down the steps onto the Punggol Promenade and go left along the river and cross at the Beidge Bridge across to the Lorong Halus Wetland. I then headed further east to the Serangoon East Dam to cross over to Coney Island. Even on a grey, gloomy day, there were a good few people out with friends and families, dogs and OBikes – and the not so sociable like me with the earphones in and the power ballads on. Coney – or Pulau Serangoon – has a great path through the jungleesque landscape with little walkways down to beaches which undoubtedly are good spots for picnics when it’s sunny and not threating a downpour. Right at the other end of Coney Island, there’s another connecting bridge back to the mainland which takes you back down the riverbank and along the Punggol

Promenade Nature Walk. In typical Singapore fashion, all the paths are immaculate and easy running – and wide enough for cycling – and helps those final kms fly by. There’s lots of flora and fauna surrounding you with swallows swooping and skimming over the river and even a couple of monitor lizards emerging from the undergrowth (I still find sightings like this exciting. Give me a break; the biggest reptiles we have in the UK are tiny adders!). Once you make it back to Whisk and Paddle, keep your fingers crossed that one of the high tables over-looking the river are still free. The menu has all your favourite combos and, although it isn’t the best waffles/eggs-benny/bacon sandwich on the island, after your 8km it hits the spot and it’s all under $20. The coffee is hot and definitely give the homemade iced teas a try; I am going to rustle up my own version of the elderflower, lemongrass and mint one because it is the nectar of the gods (and would also make a good cocktail mixer). All in all, it’s a great morning of breathing in the fresh air, dodging the rain clouds and enjoying the great outdoors, before heading back into the city and swapping the trainers for skyhigh sandals.

Did YOU KNOW? JAMIE’S ITALIAN CAREFULLY SELECT SUPER-FRESH, SUSTAINABLY SOURCED SEAFOOD. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY NEVER BUY WILD FISH THAT’S NOT TRACEABLE TO A RESPONSIBLE SOURCE. Jamie’s Italian in Singapore stays true to its roots by providing diners with rustic Italian fare spiked with the British chef’s pizzazz. The restaurants are usually packed during weekends, so be sure to make your reservations. For starters, we recommend ordering the crispy squid to share. The batter is light and crispy, and served with a tangy, creamy garlicky mayonnaise that’s delicious all on its own. Equally impressive is the classic meat plank heaving with cold cuts such as San Daniele prosciutto, pistachio mortadella, bresaola and hot soppressata, coupled with mini buffalo mozzarella, pecorino and chilli jam, pickles, olives and rainbow slaw. From the pasta menu, the prawn linguine is a fine choice, with al dente noodles slicked with a light sauce of garlic, chillies and fennel, and studded with fresh prawns. Another show-stealer is the wild mushroom and seasonal greens risotto. Firm risotto grains are held together in a rich, creamy sauce redolent of mushrooms—perfect comfort food for any occasion. Meat lovers should check out the hulking 280g ribeye steak that's cooked to your preferred doneness. It is served with grilled portobello mushrooms, gremolata, chunky chips and gorgeous balsamic-glazed onions. Or go for the juicy

42-43Feature-PoundAround_Punggol.indd 3

lamb chops served with agrodolce peppers and salsa verde, and the grilled pork chop scented with parsley and paired with apple and kohlrabi (a type of cabbage). For dessert, try the classic Tiramisù, or Creamy Panna Cotta with seasonal fruit compote and spiced crumble. Parents can look forward to nutritious kids’ menu options that promise both healthy eating and fun dining for their little ones. Kids can look forward to reading their menu through old school view-finders and being entertained throughout their meal with special take-home goodie bags. Both restaurants feature stylish bar spaces that are perfect for unwinding after a hard’s day work. Choose from classic, refreshing or contemporary cocktail selections or pair your favourite glass of wine with one of their signature dishes.

A woman of many talents Lena Dobreci meets the multi-hyphenate Jane Cafarella to hear about the blood, sweat and tears of a creative career.

I

recently met Jane Cafarella at the ANZA Writer’s Group. She was our featured guest for the evening, sharing the details of her play, e-baby, which the Tasmanian Theatre Company recently premiered in Hobart, Australia; and the companion play she is working on, d-baby. Yet, as the evening progressed, there was so much else to learn about Jane’s experience with the written word and artistic impressions. Since the start of her career in ’76, she has been a newspaper columnist, editorial trainer, international journalist, author, cartoonist and playwright. “I began working as a journalist in 1976 as a cadet at Standard Newspapers (now Leader Newspapers), a community media group owned by News Ltd,” Jane recalled. After later running the cadet program for Standard, she became a consultant for training the 120-strong editorial staff in the group from 1999-2004. She furthered that experience by creating the curriculum, and teaching an online community newspaper course for News Ltd journalists all across Australia. As a teacher, she taught at various well-known institutions in Australia including La

46

Trobe University, and the Swinburn University of Technology (Melbourne). For her daughter’s 21st birthday she self-published an anthology of her articles from the column A New Life Journal that she wrote for The Age Newspaper from 1986-1995. For years she was a writer and cartoonist for NGO’s, corporate and government organisations; in the State Library of Victoria her cartoons are kept in an archive. She also ran her own freelance writing business for 16 years – writing, editing and cartooning for various media organisations. As a female cartoonist, she would find interested clients due to her feminist perspective and angles in the work she produced. “I’m not a great artist,” she confesses. “But my gags are good”. Despite the visible success and diversity across all of these areas of writing and artistry that Jane has accomplished, she sheepishly brushes them aside: “I said yes to everything – so I could pay the bills.” Our group of writers that evening were inspired not only by the story of her first professionally produced full-length play, e-baby (which has had three professional productions in Australia in two years), but also by the journey that Jane has taken in so many areas of writing and illustration. She attributes this to the persistence and support from within her professional community – in addition to her creative talent. “Persistence is everything and having a compelling story to tell, as well as moral support from other old and emerging artists.”

Of her success to date, she is humble in her outlook. “Everything is 10 percent talent and 90 percent hard work,” she explains. While I can agree with the emphasis on hard work, I disagree on the percentage. I’d say it’s closer to 40/60 – but I obviously need to do more hard work! Her curiosity has also been a major player in contributing to her career. E-baby was inspired by her experiences as an editor for Accent, the women’s pages of The Age Newspaper, in particular, from an interview with a woman she had met in Thailand who had hired a commercial surrogate in the US. This sparked Jane’s curiosity, and after her arrival in Singapore in March 2012, she began researching all she could on the subject; thereafter writing her first full-production play. It is the story of a woman with a moral conviction that she must help other women with infertility issues to have children. The play explores the relationship between the surrogate and the woman who hires her, and the journey they embark on together to create a child. The fascinating world of surrogacy is laid out in all its moral and logistical complexities – done in a humorous way while not losing any of the significance of the serious nature of its reason for being. Her follow-on, d-baby explores the inner sanctum of donorconceived children – how they perceive their existence and the varied relationships within their unconventional world. Both of these plays, written in her later years as a writer, have the sensitive maturity that can only come with life experience. They are unabashed portrayals of humanity outside of the conventional mother-father offspring of yester-year. These are

the voices of the unconventional but equally deserving creation of today’s children. It’s a look at how women are using birth control for decades and staying in education or careers that put off having children past their fertile years - and what effects that has on the new age families, if any. On advice to the baby boomers whom have yet to craft their stories into published books, plays, or other written and illustrative works she says: “Self-doubt is normal and constant and every project is difficult and challenging, and holds the risk of failure – no matter how many times you’ve succeeded in your life. Don’t believe reports about overnight success in anything. And remember, the play, film or story you’re reading and envying is probably the 45th draft.” Sure enough, during our meeting that evening I told Jane that as a would-be writer in the process of attempting to get my first book published, I have a hard time in bookstores. “Don’t go into bookstores,” she replies. “They just make you feel awful”. However, she adds that: “As a reader and writer, it’s also hard to keep away, as other writers are our inspiration.” For me, it’s more the overwhelming awe (now that I understand how arduous the process is), that so many people have actually managed to turn their completed stories into published works. For a few lucky people, a story and the process can be very quick and painless – those are the fortunate ones but, as Jane noted with the talent to hard work ratio, those are the minority. The fact that Jane has persisted through so many different artistic areas within her career is testament to her own tenacity as well as talent.

CURTAINS UP Singapore boasts some incredible theatrical venues from the well-known to the underground. We go backstage to showcase those to check out.

The Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay 1, Esplanade Drive, 038981 esplanade.com

The Script: This glittering, twinshelled architectural masterpiece, colloquially known at the ‘durian’ is the performing arts centre which boasts a 1,600-seater concert hall and a further 2,000-seater theatre. From the classic, to the contemporary; the cultural to the kitsch, the Esplanade’s repertoire is so varied there really is something for everyone. A few fun facts? The stage area of the Theatre is so large that you could park a Concorde on it. The Concert Hall can be acoustically “tuned” – yep they can alter the room to suit the range of music.

The Call-Sheet: The Esplanade and its collaborators host over 3000 performances every year – but the ones you MUST secure in the diary are: The Stuttgart Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet for technical brilliant, lavish sets and costumes designed by Jürgen Rose. Also the spell-binding NINAGAWA Macbeth which transposes Shakespeare to the war-torn world of 16th century Azuchi-Momoyama Japan.

C U RTA I N S U P

The Script: For all the big musical numbers, we are spoilt for choice with what’s on offer at the Mastercard Theatre at Marina Bay Sands. There is always plenty to sate our theatre hunger, from great acts for the kids to fuel their imagination, to the outlandish for everyone to have a good laugh on a night out. There’s big band stuff, intimate cabaret, Broadway-esque productions and regional performances. And you’re right amongst it with MBS being on your doorstep. Plenty of opportunity for pre-theatre dining for whatever you’re into – champagne at CUT by Wolfgang Puck or burgers at the DC Comics Super Heroes Café.

The Call-Sheet: You would’ve seen from our interview with one of the cast’s leading stars (see page 34), West Side Story (13-24 Sep) is coming to town. Whoop!. So is the hugely successful War Horse with a live orchestra (3&4 Nov). Get a little “ooooh la la” with the Forever Crazy girls from Paris (11-29 Oct) and catch 007 in Concert (19-20 Jan) to be both shaken and stirred.

The Mastercard Theatre 4, Bayfront Avenue, 018973 marinabaysands.com/entertainment

The Star Performing Arts Centre 1, Vista Exchange Green, #04-01, 138617 thestar.sg

The Script: Yet another architectural masterpiece housing great theatrical moments in Singapore is The Star at Buona Vista. Designed by Andrew Bromberg, it’s like an iconic pin on your Google Maps for great gigs and great restaurants too. Maybe you’ve caught Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz or Norah Jones there in its 5,000-seater theatre? And then headed next door to The Star Vista to explore the three floors of restaurants? Not checked it out yet? It’s a must.

The Call-Sheet: Who isn’t coming to The Star in the next few months? For a little ‘90s nostalgia there’s Belinda Carlisle (11 Nov) and Aqua (25 Nov), for teenage girl mania, Harry Styles’ flies in on 23 Nov – although good luck getting tickets for that one – and comedian Michael McIntyre steps onto the stage on Wednesday 29 Nov. All are sure to be great nights out with friends and family.

The Projector 6001 Beach Road, #05-00, Golden Mile Tower, 199589 theprojector.sg

The Script: For a more alternative evening, head to The Projector for its carefully curated not-the-norm cinema screenings. Often cult classics or locallyproduced films are followed by Q&A’s with visiting directors and discussion groups – perfect for the real movie lovers among us – so you’re in for a real experience here. Originally the historic Golden Theatre built in the 1970’s, The Projector is now three cinema halls – the Green Room, the Blue Room and the Redrum (pronounced “red room” and inspired by Kubrick’s The Shining) with a great traditional café, The Intermission Bar, serving popcorn and beer. Post film, pop out through to the carpark to an up-cycled style bar, The Great Escape. Very hipster with neon lighting, Formica chairs and craft ales, but it’s a cool spot for an alternative view of the Marina Bay skyline.

The Kallang 1, Stadium Walk, 397688 kallangtheatre.com

The Call-Sheet: These guys host many a film festival, including the recent Middle East Film Festival with pieces not even allowed to be shown in the native countries. Interesting stuff.

The Script:

From the Golden Age of Singaporean theatre, The Kallang found near the Stadium, was built in 1970 as a five-storey cinema by Chong Gay Theatres. In the ‘80s it was where you would’ve seen all the great international productions from Les Miserables to Phantom of the Opera. From 1986 to 2000, the Kallang Theatre hosted the annual National Day Rally. Former Prime Ministers, the late Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong held their National Day Rallies at the theatre. To this day, the room used by the Prime Ministers – the ‘Lee Kuan Yew Room’ as it is called, remains as one of the best kept rooms in the building. After a closure, renovation and re-opening, The Kallang is once again a venue that supports local acts as well as international artists. A great venue on the East Coast is a plus-plus.

The Call-Sheet:

As the inaugural Asia International Comedy Festival hits this month, catch Kanan Gill (10 Sep), a huge comedic force. and YouTube influencer. And

here in Singapore is there a gleaming gold rhino standing as a reception desk, or six hand-hammered brass banyan trees appearing to hold up the ceiling? What sort of place would have great gold elephants looking like they’re emerging from a lift or artwork that isn’t stationary but follows you around the room? Where has red velvet seating so

plush you can bury your fingers in the pile and lighting low enough even during the day to evoke the era of elicit cocktail bars? Ladies and Gentlemen, as the hotel’s adage says, “If you must get into trouble, do so at Hôtel Vagabond.” And the décor certainly makes you feel like getting into trouble here could be very stylish indeed. The interior of this 41-room hotel close to the banks of the Rochor Canal on Syed

Alwi Road, is thanks to Parisian designer, Jacques Garcia – the creative mastermind behind ultimate escapism joints like The Danieli in Venice and Hotel Costes in Paris. These are Bucket List places to stay, that have transcended mere hotel status to be a destination in their own right. Go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, or see all you need to of the City of Light from your Hotel Costes bed, looking at the ceiling? With

a hotel as stunning as that, it’s a tough weigh-up. And it seems to be a similar ambience created at Hôtel Vagabond; a place to take a vacation from the everyday; a place quite unlike the rest of Singapore. There is a distinct nod to Paris here due to the colour palette of bitten-lip rouge and Cleopatraesque gold, but the touches are all a little more exotic. Going back to that Rhino in the lobby, it was actually curated by a hugely respected artisan family in India who have the proud, multigeneration tradition of making armour for the Rajasthani royal family. Hotel owner, Satinder Garcha and his wife Harpeet Bedi who manages the day-to-day running of Hôtel Vagabond have given many personal touches to this hotel too. In particular with the art, which is clearly a passion for both of them. Stepping into the Salon, with a bar presided over by giant baboon installation, La Mona, is like releasing your inner Flapper girl at a speakeasy. Order yourself a martini or one of the cocktails-with-a-twist on offer from Head Bartender, Shah, and take a wander around the gallery-like walls. Contemporary artists are placed alongside classics, as well as striking photography; it’s a cacophony of great pieces. Part of the hotel’s mission is to make culture and creativity more accessible through an Artists-inResidence programme. Local and

international artists are often invited to apply for a residency at the hotel during which they will stay, work and converse with guests. It’s a fabulous touch to make Vagabond like a living and breathing studio. So, indulge in the cocktails here but skip dinner – you’re slap-bang in the centre of a foodie haven in this part of town, so step out for something delicious. If you need inspiration, either take your trusted copy of ANZA magazine (Our August Check-Out is a gastronomy insider’s guide to Jelan Basar) or take one of the gorgeous printed maps of Little India and Kampong Glam on offer in the hotel lobby. Little hand drawn roads and personal recommendations from the staff, are much more of an adventure – after all there has to be a little bit of that even if you are holiday-ing at home. Once you’re back, head to your room. As is no surprise in a heritage building – clock the Art Deco design of the exterior – space is at a premium, but the hotel has done a great job at making the best of it. Tapestried sliding doors, rainfall showers and a room that is essentially all bed, is perfect for a hotel room with romance.

54

For the techies amongst you, you’ll like “Handy” the sleek smartphone which has free local and international calls plus unlimited data. This is rather handy if you want to say, stay another day and set up a temporary office whilst still in your robe…but what a great advantage if you’re an actaul visitor to Singapore too, don’t you think? For those looking to relax, grab one of the fluffy white robes in the wardrobe, plump-up the pillows and settle back for a movie marathon. From actionpacked blockbusters, to art-house avant garde flics; from kids’ classic to Oscar gold, there is enough to keep you entertained. Break into the minibar – you’re on holiday – and indulge. Staycations may seem an obsolete solution in Singapore where so much is on our doorstep and a short hop-skipand-a-jump-away on Scoot and you’re at a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but now and again, how great is it to just book into a hotel here at home? No fuss; no stress; little organisation. Perfect. After all, isn’t that what a holiday should be about? Take a mini-break from the mundane and check-in to Hôtel Vagabond.

WHAT ELSE? If you can’t do a sleepover at Hôtel Vagabond, be sure to check out their monthly Comedy nights. Purchase tickets for about $20 and try and reserve a booth near the stage. The comics start around 9pm.

Calabria has it all. Fascinating history, a tradition of slow and real food, spectacular national parks, and an earthy charm far warmer than its more sophisticated cousins in the north. Lee Carsley discovers a memorable Italian beauty.

H

itting Naples from Florence is like leaving your great aunt and arriving to stay with the wild, younger male cousin no one in the family wants to talk about. Florence is refined; Naples is crude. And all the better for it. 43 million people visit Italy every year; it’s the fifth most visited country in the world (after France, US, Spain, and China). Yet only 13% make it down south; even less into Calabria, the ‘toe’ of the Italian boot. I am about to convince you to go, but you have to follow me down the rabbit hole… Naples is noisy, filthy, and reeks of all things naughty and way too much fun. There are cigarette butts everywhere, and it looks like someone hasn’t picked up the trash in a loooooong time. While we’re on trash, about 50% of Naples is run by the mafia. I would put a capital ‘M’, but that would suggest it is more of a vertical conglomerate than it actually is. When the ‘mafia’ realised how lucrative the waste disposal business was, they cornered the market on all government contracts, and then proceeded to illegally bury an estimated 10million tons of toxic garbage in landfills in or around Naples. The three neighbouring towns of Nola, Acerea and Marigliano are referred to as the ‘Triangle of Death’ – scientists found breast cancer rates 47% higher than national average whilst birth defects an eye-watering 80%. Fortunately, we weren’t staying long; just to pick up a hire car. And just long

enough to experience the only Michelin star pizzeria in the world, 50 Kalo di Ciro Salvo and eat at an amazing pescateria in the old town, walk comfortably home, not feeling threatened at all. Then, it was onto our drive – and I think the driving may be the real reason for the lack of interest in southern Italy. Issue 1: you drive on the right side of the road. If you are British, Australian, or Singaporean, this is known as the ‘wrong’ side of the road (although we are in the minority on this one). Issue 2: It is almost impossible to find automatic cars, because you need manual to rallydrive around hairpin turns, up steep hills, and to avoid the greatest danger of all on the roads – Italian drivers. Issue 3: Arising from Issue 1 and 2, you and your partner will fight. Most of the time. Until one of you can figure out the triggers, and later humourously discuss, over a glass of very nice rosé (something Calabria does very well), how you can avoid these issues in the future. We managed to get out of Naples losing only one side mirror (not ours, the other car). My husband drove. Calabria has not had rain in three years. Their water comes from aquafiers fed by snow from the mountains, but which are now running dangerously low. As we drove down tightly winding roads – some no more than a car wide – we saw jaw-dropping views of emerald waters, sheer cliffs, majestic mountains – and fires everywhere. We watched a helicopter drop water onto flames, quickly head down to the coast, drag its

water chute through the sea and then slowly make its way back to the top of the mountain fires. We drove via Paestum, stopping at a small town on the way known for its buffalo mozzarella. Just south of the Sorrento peninsula, and a mile inland, Paestum is a haunting UNESCO World Heritage Site where Greek temples stand in the middle of the countryside. Originally known as Poseidonia, it was built by Greek colonists from Sybaris in around 600BC. In 410BC the town was conquered by the Lucanians, a native Italian people. A few hundred years later, the Romans took over and changed the name to Paestum. As the Roman Empire collapsed, Paestum crumbled. Malari and Saracen raids led to the near-abandonment of the town and the development of Capaccio, a safer hillside settlement. Like something out of a Game of Thrones episode, isn’t it? We sat amongst the history, eating at the foot of one of the temples, dining on fresh bread, anchovies and buffalo mozzarella. We arrived at Amantea seven hours later, with a two-hour detour due to the fires in the mountains. Agritourism is a great website which offers the opportunity to stay in or near working farms. Some will be vineyards; others will have donkeys, pigs, goats, chickens, tomatoes and even bees. Sometimes they are simple rooms in the farmhouse, others are suites in large mansions. We opted for the latter, which offered their specialties of the famous

September 2017 anza

black pork, and their own honey. My husband is Italian, his mother from Calabria and he spoke Calabrian before he spoke English. He chatted to our host, eyes and arms open wide – and an aperitif quickly arrived which went down very well whilst looking across the valley. Dinner there was our first real Calabrian meal of the trip with eggplant melanzane, sweet-tasting tomatoes, and zucchini flowers with ricotta cheese. We left the next day to head to our next destination, a gift of honey from my husband’s newest best friend in our suitcase. Our next stop was a 16th century castle, the Relais Chateau De just outside San Giovanni De Fiore and near the Sila National Park, known for its lakes and ancient pine forest. Our host couple – young, well-educated professionals from well-to-do families, who gave up

careers in law to take care of the castle – suggested dinner on the castella rooftop, and we couldn’t resist. We sipped ice-cold rosé over four-courses whilst contemplating life looking over mountains dotted with limestone caves, many of which hold pecorino cheese curing at just the right temperature. We were given a tour of the property and chapel, and saw paintings by old Renaissance masters, ornate frescoes and 400-year-old chapel robes. Seeing the wealth of history there, you can understand the dilemma facing so many old places in Italy – restoration or refresh? Restoration is more expensive, but the former involves pride, the other efficiency. We then made our way to Tropea in the Vibo Valentia region, our final destination, but not before stopping at the Greek and Roman ruins at Capo Colonna. The legend

says that it was Hercules who, returning from Spain, stood on the Coast of Gods and made Tropea one of his ports. It boasts stunning white sand beaches, making it the holiday destination of choice for Italians in the summer, but you’ll be pressed to find a foreign tourist. Beyond Tropea are more white sand beaches that don’t have parasols sitting cheek-by-jowl so make the effort and explore a little further. The water is emerald and blue together, and as I snorkeled, I saw an ancient Roman fort and impossibly steep walkways down to secluded beaches, with only one or two people on them. Spectacular. Our last meal in Calabria was pizza (Napoli style) with ndya salama (a local speciality), a calabrese salad and some rosé , of course. And just a little foodie aside worth a mention, many villages in the Vibo Valentia area produce a particular red onion. Known as cipolla di Tropea, they taste incredibly sweet, so sweet in fact, that one of the gelaterias in town, Tonino in the Corso, even makes a red onion ice cream. Give it a try. My husband and I have undoubtedly fallen a little in love with Calabria and we left feeling nostalgic but already planning our return visit. When we departed, via Lamezia airport for our plane back to Rome and then Singapore, I think I heard Calabria calling, “non ti scordar de me”. No, I don’t think I’ll be forgetting that cornerstone of Italy at all.

Hi everyone, each month I will provide a brief update on past and upcoming activities, while still letting the photos do the talking over these two pages. So far we have had two great photowalks, one around Bras Basah, and one in the CBD at the recent car free Sunday. Both events were well attended and it was great to see everyone’s photos. The photowalks

for October to December are being finalised and you can contact me at the email address below for more info. For those that are interested in photography, whether it’s a point ‘n’ shoot, camera phone, or something more advanced, we would love to see you join our photowalks and discussions. The only pre-requisite is enthusiasm. We have enough knowledge

THERE’S A DEFINITE JAPANESE TASTE TO THIS MONTH’S HOTSPOT RECOMMENDATIONS FROM RAELENE TAN AND CHARLEY LARCOMBE. “ITADAKIMASU”; LET’S EAT. LEWIN TERRACE 21 Lewin Terrace, 179290 6333 9905 lewinterrace.com.sg

TAJIMAYA 1 HARBOUR FRONT WALK #01-102/103 VIVOCITY, 098585 6377 0070 creativeeateries.com.sg Tajimaya offers a fun and interactive ‘handson cooking’ experience. If a table-top, do-it-yourself, barbecue is your choice, then try Yaki-niku at this popular restaurant in VivoCity. (‘Yaki’ means ‘grilled’ and ‘niku’ is ‘meat’). The beauty here is that the barbecue is smokeless and odourless, making for a pleasant experience. The raw ingredients may include thinly sliced beef, pork and chicken, plus plump prawns, scallops and mixed vegetables. It is the sauce that makes the difference and three types are provided for diners, with servers explaining which sauce is recommended for particular items ordered. On a recent visit, I enjoyed prawn tempura and a colourful crisp salad as an appetiser, followed by mains of delicately sliced Angus ribeye, wagyu tongue, tender kurobuta pork jowl, juicy lamb rack, scallops, mildly sweet swordfish and aromatic garlic fried rice. Velvety smooth Hokkaido milk pudding with soft, red, azuki beans rounded off the meal nicely. Sake (Japanese rice wine), shochu (distilled alcoholic beverage) and plum wine are available as well as a selection of classic cocktails. The air-conditioned restaurant is near the Boardwalk, facing Sentosa. There is also an al fresco dining area with a panoramic view of the island and Resorts World Sentosa. “Itadakimasu; let’s eat”. This restaurant is housed in an old black and white building snuggled into the luscious hillside of Fort Canning Park and was once the home of Major General Lewin, the General Officer Commander in Singapore in the 1930s. Located off Coleman Street, behind the original Central Fire Station, the restaurant is found atop a staircase up, up and up on the edge of the park. It’s a steep climb if you’re weighed down by day-time shopping and kids’ prams, or tricky to navigate in your heels, but you’re well rewarded when you reach the top. A beautiful deck wraps around the front of the building which would make a truly romantic location for the evening, your date lit by candle light and the chirrups and chirps of the forest providing a nice atmospheric soundtrack – however, for a lunchtime bite escaping the tropical heat, head indoors for a crisp, cool table. The concept is Japanese-French fusion so expect beautiful dishes, expertly executed but with hints and tastes of Japan. The menu changes with the season, so you can always expect something different, but at the moment the kitchen is offering the ‘Chitose Strawberry Fair’ menu; a celebration of delicious berries! For a bit of a noon-time treat, duck into here for a three-course lunch ($47++). I managed to get down there one Thursday to be greeted by the Chief Sommelier Axel Paquette. Sadly, I had to

get back to the office but he is effusive with his knowledge on the extensive wine list so be sure to talk to him when you go. He admits he is slightly biased towards the French grapes but assures me there are some great Australian bottles there too. Sitting in a cool corner, I ordered salmon confit to start which looked as spring-like as it tasted; delicate and delicious, whilst my companion went for an unusual hot cauliflower soup with eel and yuzukosho. For main, I recommend the codfish saikyo miso with mountain vegetables, but for something a little different opt for the seabass which is wrapped in a pork caul; it’s an interesting take on what is usually a classic. But save space for dessert and make sure you share – because the piece de la resistance of this menu at present are the puddings. The strawberry parfait comes in a martini glass full to the brim of strawberry concoctions including berry sauce, an air-light parfait and white chocolate mochi – which is a nice touch of Asia within the dish. The strawberry tarte is so pretty; it’s almost a shame to break into it. Almost. There is also a strawberry cake with springy sponge – I didn’t get the chance to try this so please order and let me know. If he’s available, do see if you can meet the Head Chef, Hiroyuki Shinkai who can talk you through each dish. As I’m not truly familiar with Japanese flavours and ingredients, it was brilliant to have the chef talk me through tastes that seemed a little unusual. A nice spot for a spoiling lunch in a hidden away location, Lewin Terrace is a little different to the norm’. Charley Larcombe

The team behind 28 HongKong Street, Proof & Company, and Crackerjack introduces Junior, a pocket bar. As an art gallery would change exhibitions, Junior will rotate and present two original concepts each year. With only ten seats in a private space, Junior (found at Crackerjack on Tanjong Pagar Road), will focus on one core topic every six months. And they’ve opened with the theme of Norma - short for Norma Oficial Mexicana, the series of compulsory standards for Mexican spirits such as tequila. NORMA celebrates the craft and tradition of authentic agave spirits with over 100 bottles of fine tequila, mezcal, and lesser-known spirits of Mexico. Plus there are delicious plates of tapas and tacos on offer too to make a night of it.

Fathers’ Food Fancies F RAELENE TAN CELEBRATES FATHERS’ DAY BY TALKING TO THREE ANZA DADS ABOUT THEIR FAVOURITE FOODS.

Born in Adelaide, Raelene Tan is an etiquette consultant and food and travel writer. She has authored four books and has been a regular guest on radio and television.

ather’s Day is celebrated in Australia and New Zealand on the first Sunday in September, which this year falls on the 3rd. ‘Tuckerbox’ asked three ANZA Dads about what gets their stomachs rumbling. Ken Hickson and his artist wife, M from Christchurch, New Zealand (who have also lived in Queensland), have three children, David, Ash and Susy, plus two grandsons. “My work is my hobby,” says the author of six books, who produces a monthly online art magazine, the avenue for creative arts and e-newsletter, ABC Carbon Express. On this second stint in Singapore, Ken enjoys involvement with the ANZA Writers Group. Ken commented; “M is a great cook. We eat at home a lot, enjoying a drop (or three) of Australian or New Zealand red wine.” Indian and Thai food are their local favourites. Hawker-stalls and food-courts appeal for opportunities to meet friends, sit outside, eat local and enjoy the sights. “We go to Komala Vilas, 76 Serangoon Road, as we love masala dosai,” the Kiwi shared. “We also enjoy Muthu’s Curry at 7, Dempsey Road. For Thai, our picks are Patara, #03-14 Tanglin Mall, and Long Chim at Marina Bay Sands.” Sydney-sider, Geoff King helps with ANZA’s website operations. He and Marnie, who is in the education field here, have lived in Singapore five years together with Malakai, aged 10 and Zakary, eight. Family favourites include Vietnamese dishes, having lived there 11 years, with Japanese sushi and sashimi also on Geoff’s list. Hawkerstalls rate highly on preferred eating places, particularly East Coast Lagoon Food Village, seated beach-side. Geoff shared, “I recommend Ah Hwee Chicken Wings, stall 14, for the best chicken-wings I’ve ever eaten, anywhere. Cooked perfectly, served with chilli sauce and a handful of limes.” Satay also appeals, from a dozen-or-so satay stalls at this food-centre. Geoff shared, “At Lagoon Chicken Curry Puff, stall 28, there is one old guy who makes a batch or two, sells them until they run out, then closes. I always start here, just in case he runs out.” “I’m a proud Mr. Mum,” discloses Brisbanite, Matthew Marshall. “I’m enjoying the rollercoaster-ride of being a stay-at-home parent.” With wife Natasha in the mining industry,

Above: Ken Hickson & his family; Left: Geoff King with his two sons; Below Matthew Marshall & his family.

Matthew makes time to trot around with ANZA Running when he’s not busy with Beatrice, seven, and three-year-old, Fergus. Living in Singapore for two years, he has settled on enjoying Italian and Indian food, “given the logistical challenges of finding a pie with peas.” Matthew shared; “Family favourites include Din Tai Fung’s pork chop, dumplings and noodles, level four, Wisma Atria, and burgers from Roadhouse, 13 Dempsey Road, or OverEasy at Liat Towers.” On date nights he and Natasha fancy duck pancakes from Chopsuey Café on Dempsey Road, or pork belly at Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands. When flying solo, ramen beckons from Tonkotsu King Four Seasons, Bugis Village, or Penangstyle char kway teow, at Tangs Market in the basement of Tangs Plaza.

TO ALL FATHERS, OUR THANKS AND LOVE FOR YOUR GUIDANCE IN OUR LIVES. ALWAYS. September 2017 anza

Sartorial Elegance BEAT THE BADLY DRESSED TOURISTS ON VACATION AND BUY YOUR DELICIOUS ITALIAN WINES AT A VENDOR CLOSER TO HOME SAYS ROBERT REES.

I

Robert Rees runs Sales and Marketing for www. wineexchangeasia.com. Originally South African, he lived in Sydney for a decade before moving to Singapore. (Views expressed do not reflect the views of the company).

t’s quite easy to forget about seasons here in Singapore because it’s hot – a lot. I always enjoy August which brings with it the Festival of the Hungry Ghost. There is something about the smell of burning paper offerings floating through the air that is evocative and compelling. This is a favourite time of year of mine for reflection on beloved family – both past and present. Early January can be cool and breezy, although it seems that just as soon as the drums stop beating, the dragons packed away and everybody finally pushes back from the tables laden with every possible kind of food and drink – the ovens in the sky get turned up and the new lunar moon heralds the beginning of a seriously hot time for all. As Europe continues to bask in one of the most amazing summers in living memory, clients have started to find their way back to work here in Singapore with sun-bleached hair, jet-lag and wistful memories of endless sunsets and matching happy-hours. The coastlines of Italy have been particularly popular this year with places like Portofino heaving with hordes of sunworshippers, husband-and-wife-hunters and Dental Association group tours from Milwaukee. I suppose its cruel to pick on dentists – particularly because I am in the middle of root canal treatment and my dentist is on our mailing list – but I can’t resist telling one story that happened in August to one family. They related that they were haunted up and down the Amalfi coast by one particular group who could always be heard

before they were seen. They annoyed the longsuffering locals with their particularly fetching interpretations of casual resort wear. A country that considers it important to dress properly just to pop around the corner for a loaf of bread, doesn’t warm naturally to the confronting sartorial tastes of whatever it is Kanye West has scrounged out of an irradiated dumpster and thrown down a runway this year. The family’s travels were vastly improved when the tour bus finally took the dentists somewhere else whilst they headed to the tiny island of Sardinia. The pace of life is discernibly slower there and everybody seems to get along just fine. The only problems with visiting tourists are how many of them fall in love with their long sandy beaches and amazing cuisine – and try to stay forever. The Sardinian wine industry is very long-lived, with ancient wild vines around every corner. The soils are rich and deep, with whites wines that impart a certain saline minerality which distinguishes them at once from other parts of Italy. Look for varietals such as Vermentino. The reds are similarly true to their terroir – with Carrignan holding pride of place. They grow mainly on very old vines and the resulting wines are sumptuously rich, yet sleek and athletic – a time-earned inheritance from old vines. You will find elements that are luxurious, deep and often Oprah-rich in fruit. From the Aussie point of view, these wines will do similar things to you that the very top end of GSM-blend wines from South Australia do. It’s also a whole lot easier summer activity to lift a few from your local vendor of choice – far away from travelling dentists in their colourful socks ‘n’ sandals.

Tolling Bells & Losing Friendships LEE CARSLEY ON HOW BUILDING NEW FRIENDSHIPS, AND LOSING OLD ONES, SEEMS TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE EXPAT LIFE.

he bells are tolling where I am currently staying, far away from Singapore. Their peeling is a weekly morning ritual calling people to come together for church. They remind me of a dear departed friend whose favourite line was ‘we all like to be a little naughty’. He was a soother of broken hearts, lover of cats, prone to giving away his last dollar to some cause or other. The bells are also tolling in Singapore, figuratively speaking. Some people dear to me are moving on in the next few months, and they will leave a hole in my life. It’s probably happening to you too, right now. Just like the weekly bells, friendships come and go with regularity in Singapore. Losing friendships unsettles us; our friends are both a part of our life and a reflection of it. When loss happens as regularly as it does here, we are faced with the conscious choice on how we continue to build friendships, with whom and why. One of the biggest beefs in Singapore is how hard it is to meet genuine people. Other than psychopaths (and they can’t all be relocating to Singapore), most of us are genuine. But the stories of ‘friends’ disappearing when the going gets rough, seems to happen more frequently here than back at home. We can misstep in Singapore when we first arrive; so lost at sea and desperate for connection and meaning. We can become something we have never been – Buddha called them the ‘four enemies’ of friendship: the taker, the talker, the flatterer, and the reckless companion.

The traditional spaces for connection, work, kids, sports, assume greater importance here, often at the expense of who we are, and why we connect. At home, your kids go to the same school. You might still have connections from your primary and high school era. And your work, and those all-important after-work drinks on Friday night, celebrations on jobs well done. But there’s always your family, that broad interconnected group of blood and emotional ties that ground us. We lose a lot of this last important piece when we become expats. The greatest gift I have been given by losing friends (past or present; in my life or now out of it), is the opportunity to assess which parts of me are stellar and those which are frankly, downright horrible. A good friend brings out the best in you. A good friend discourages what is worst in you. By their actions and words, out of genuine concern for your well-being, a good friend will support your wholesome actions and discourage your unwholesome ones. You can use your time in Singapore, to not only make a conscious choice in how you are, and why you have the friends that you do, but, in fact, widen the spaces to meet people who you like and will like you. Recreate that family you may be missing. ANZA – a nice little plug here – provides loads of options for a “more conscious choice of friendship-making”, including loads more community work with meaning. After all, being in the service of others is a really, really great way to meet beautiful people here. Trust me.

his coming season we are fortunate to be welcoming back coach Khiok Seng Tan – KS as all members of the ANZA netball team know him – to help develop our players. It is not only KS’ experience coaching to the highest level in Singapore which sets him apart, but his love of the game. It is a passion he imparts to our players.

WHEN DID YOU START BECOMING INVOLVED WITH NETBALL? I started playing in 2002 after watching a friend play. DO YOU STILL HAVE TIME AND OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY? Yes I do. I play for Singapore in the Asian Men’s Championship; for my club Zenith in local competitions, and with my friends for street and beach netball competitions. I used to play more as Goal Shooter, but now like to play as Centre and circle the defender more. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE GAME? I love netball because I get to play with my friends. WHAT HAS MADE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SPORT? My passion grew after being more involved in playing with my club and getting more competitive in tournaments. WHY DID YOU BECOME A COACH? I was umpiring at a school and they asked me to help find a coach. I volunteered myself – that was 11 years ago! WHAT DID YOU NEED TO DO TO QUALIFY? The paper qualifications are quite complicated. But I think what’s more important is the passion to help players enjoy and get better at the game.

As ANZA Netball goes from strength to strength, we will be utilising more professional coaches in our programme to help support our amazing volunteers who contribute so much time and energy - making ANZA Netball the wonderful community it is. To coincide with the beginning of our season, we thought it the perfect time to learn more about KS.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A COACH? I’m fortunate to be able to do what I like for a living here in Singapore. WHERE ELSE DO YOU COACH NETBALL? I coach some local primary and secondary schools; ‘Zenith’ - my netball club; corporate teams, the 14 and under National team, and Tiger Sharks in the Netball Super League. I’m kept busy. WHAT QUICK TIPS CAN IMPROVE A PLAYER? Be open to feedback and disciplined with training. WHAT OTHER SPORTS ALSO HELP TO IMPROVE NETBALL SKILLS? I recommend playing more invasion-type games like basketball, handball, football, ultimate Frisbee etc. It will help in game awareness and quick decision-making. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE SPORT DEVELOPING IN SINGAPORE? It is going in the right direction now with new programmes and developments aiming to have a bigger pool of base players. WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT ANZA NETBALL? ANZA Netball opens up more opportunities to players to further develop in the sport. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Other than netball, I enjoy cycling, and travelling. My favourite destination is Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I like active holidays, especially cycling trips, where I get to explore the place on my bike. ANY GOOD LOCAL TIPS ABOUT LIVING IN SINGAPORE? Knowing how to use ‘lah’, ‘loh’, ‘leh’, will help you communicate better with locals. My favourite places to eat are the hawker centres and coffee shops for real Singapore.

expectancy is increasing all the time. Over the last 30 Lyearsife(1986 to 2016) life expectancy has increased by around eight years for both males and females to 80.6 years and 85.1 years respectively (Department of Statistics 2016). This means that someone retiring now will need to have accumulated a fund far greater than someone retiring in 1986 to generate the same income. I believe in adopting an individual approach to help you make the best decisions for your retirement fund – decisions that are right for you now and in the future. I specialise in guiding people through the decision making process, so that they can make an informed choice. The golden rule is to find out exactly how much you are going to need in retirement – and to start planning for it now. Pedal, Sweat, Drink, Compete JAMES WALLS TALKS ABOUT ANZA CYCLING’S RECENT CHARITY EVENT TO PROVIDE QHUBEKA BIKES TO AFRICAN COMMUNITIES.

Interested in coming out for a ride? ANZA Cycling runs a Newcomers’ Ride on the first Saturday of each month. cycling@anza.org.sg

76

I

t’s only a 200-metre bike sprint. 15 short seconds. And a drink to finish and celebrate. Too easy! At least that’s what we thought… In mid-July, ANZA Cycling, in conjunction with our Platinum Sponsor Dimension Data, held a social and charity event at Jaxs Bistro, where fifty plus members gathered to try out Zwift, an interactive cycling application. We were placed on bikes, connected to a smart trainer and rode the streets of London on the big screen. The competition was a short sprint along The Mall to see who was fastest, strongest, or just pretending. And to answer the age-old question – does alcohol improve sporting performance? So why do this? It was all in support of Qhubeka, a charity with a mission to change the lives of some of the lowest income communities throughout Africa by providing them with bicycles. They enable children to ride to school to achieve an education. Qhubeka-funded bikes increase a person’s ability to carry goods (by a factor of 5), and to ultimately improve their lives and those of their families and communities. Dimension Data, alongside our Pro cycling team, has a goal to drive the provision of 5,000 bicycles this year, along with the training, equipment and know-how to service and maintain them for a lifetime. So, in the name of a great cause we sprinted, sweated, talked strategy, had a drink, sprinted and sweated some more. Through this, stringent testing was undertaken. Do you take a long run-up or short? Stand or sit? Does bribing the race committee help? Should I wear shoes, sandals or flip-flops? It was serious stuff. So serious that at least one unnamed rider tried over ten times to beat the record. Through our testing we established: long, sit, maybe, and shoes. We also discovered that 200 metres feels like a mile, and 15 seconds can be a lifetime. Along with all the action, we had some

great prizes donated by Jabra, Allied World, OrthoMed Physio, Jaxs Bistro and the Hollandse Club. BikePlus also dug deep to provide some very slick looking BMC road bikes and a Wahoo Trainer for the evening, and Cycosports came to the party with medals. In the end, there were race winners and losers. The winners went home with medals and raffle prizes. Everyone else left with sore heads and hoarse voices from the cheering and screaming. Through this the ANZA cycling community raised over $2,000. That’s enough to provide eight bikes to families, and change the outcome of a community for the better. And this is what makes me proud to be part of ANZA. We had a great time with great people who are generous in nature and spirit. And as for alcohol improving performance? The results are still inconclusive. I think more testing is required.

So, in the name of a great cause we sprinted, sweated, talked strategy, had a drink, sprinted and sweated some more.

or many ANZA Soccer players, one high point of the season comes on that magical day in September when the team parent hands out the kit. Finally, every player can don the team jersey, and the team begins to look, as well as feel, like a playing unit. Bright colours and team names make everyone feel part of an exciting mission. Most teams elect to add players’ names to the shirt backs, and suddenly everyone knows who is who and spectators are cheering for players by name. But few players or parents stop to think of how the kit materialises at the pitches. What is the kit process, and who puts in the hours of work to make our players’ look and feel so smart? ANZA Soccer’s Kit Coordinator Maree Roberts, with the help of the ANZA Soccer Committee, puts in many hours of work in the spring and summer to select vendors, choose kit design, specify exact numbers of each part of the uniform per team and age group, and finally coordinate the delivery and hand-out process. Teams may not be aware that their kit colours and team names have a long history at ANZA Soccer, with the original four teams Flyers in blue, Gordons in red, Sailors in white, and Warriors in green - having first played in the 1976 inaugural season (see ANZA Soccer’s history on the website). This season, ANZA Soccer ordered 985 shirts and similar numbers of shorts and socks for Saturday players, with Sunday Competition kits totalling another 296 packets.

Besides each player’s three-piece kit, the committee must design and order goalie shirts, practice vests, coaches’ shirts, first-aid shirts, caps, and committee shirts. For each order, we consider factors such as quality of fabric and workmanship, proper fit, aesthetics, turnaround time, replacement options, and of course, price. Once the crates of kit arrive, Maree, committee members, and other helpful parents sort and organise it for efficient distribution at the pitches. Team parents then take on the final tasks: fitting kit to players and organising the printing of players’ names, usually at one of the many fabric printers at Queensway Shopping Centre. While we used to contract with various local sportswear companies, changing manufacturing realities in Singapore and new printing technologies led us to Worn2Win, whose founder happens also to be an ANZA Soccer parent. With a production facility on nearby Batam, and state-of-the-art printing technology, Worn2Win handles the bulk of our kit order, with smaller orders still coming from one of our former suppliers. With a personal connection, impressive quality, and favourable terms, ANZA Soccer is confident that our kit will continue to be comfortable, attractive, and inspiring for our players and coaches. We thank all those who help to get the kit to the players, and hope that our families take a moment to appreciate the tremendous behind-the-scenes efforts that make our players the most stylish on the pitches!

ATHLETICS

Things are a-changing! kids’ achievements and also be used as a notification board of last-minute cancellations due to rain and haze, etc.

AS ANZA ATHLETICS GETS UNDERWAY FOR THE 2017/18 SEASON, LUCY JAMES DISCUSSES A FEW CHANGES TO SEE OUT ON THE TRACK.

SCORING We are going to completely separate the Points System into two groups: Age Group Champions, and Most Improved.

E

arly last month, the ANZA Athletics Committee gathered all the feedback from the community, from parents, from the children and sought how to improve the current athletics group. They’ve been listening and are shaking up ANZA Athletics to make it better and easier for everyone to take part. There are a few changes which have been made to improve the group whilst still retaining the important values of making new friends, attaining personal bests and simply having fun. The season has just kicked off so there is still time to sign your kids up for a weekly dose of healthy competition – with the following points implemented to ensure we have the best season yet.

THE ROSTER/ COACHES ANZA Athletics are paying for more dedicated coaches so you, the parents, don’t have to commit every week. The coaches will teach and properly train your kids in the different events. Parents will be rostered on as Age Group Managers, Recorders and Place Setter. This way, you’’; get to watch your kids, have fun with them and be their biggest cheerleaders!

TIME-KEEPING ACCURACY The coaches will be responsible for keeping an eye on the clock and we will improve the accuracy for our little athletes. We’ve been researching new and different equipment systems and hope to upgrade what we have.

COMMUNICATION ANZA Athletics caters to kids aged 5 to 14-years-old, with a focus on fun, fitness and skills. Yio Chu Kang Stadium. athletics@anza.org.sg

A Facebook Group – ANZA Little Athletics Singapore – has been set up which will be a closed group (just for parents) and will be audited every year. This Group will help us to engage as a community and share photos,

Age Group Champion Each week every athlete’s attendance is recorded and one point is awarded for each event contested. Points are also awarded if an athlete equals or improves upon their personal best. Additional points will be awarded to the participant with the fastest times and the longest distance jumped/ thrown, not the actual place finished. The total of these points determines the end of season Age Group Champion. The point scoring system for all events: 1st Place: 7 Points 4th Place: 3 Points 2nd Place: 5 Points 5th Place: 2 Points 3rd Place: 4 Points All other competitors will receive one point on completing an event. Personal Best (PB) points are awarded with 3 points for a new PB and 2 points for an equal PB. These points will be calculated separately and compiled for each athlete’s end of year total. The point score for all events is the overall result of the event. That is, if a child that placed third in heat 1 has a faster time than a child who wins heat 2, then the child in heat 1 will be placed higher overall than the winner of heat 2. In the event of a tie, the athletes will be awarded the same points e.g. two athletes who have exactly the same distance in long jump and are tied for first place will both earn 7 points and the next athlete will be placed third with 4 points. Age Champion Award: First, second and third highest point-earning girls and boys in all age groups. Most Improved This award recognises ongoing improvement throughout the season. Points are awarded each time an athlete achieves a personal best performance in an event. Each Age Group will have a male and female winner and runner-up in this category.

10 MI NUTES W ITH ...

10 MINUTES WITH... Australian stunt driver, Rhianna Buchanan was here last month showcasing her skills at Monster Jam. She talks careers, positive outlooks and keeping safe in a dangerous industry.

YOU GREW UP RACING BIKES AND DRIVING CARS ON THE FARM IN QUEENSLAND; HOW DID THIS PASSION START? I really was born into the industry; cars and bikes were in my blood! Great weekends were always spent with friends and family riding on our properties and testing our skills. YOU ALSO DID BALLET AND HIP HOP AND ENJOYED PERFORMING – IS THAT SOMETHING THAT CONTINUES TO THIS DAY? I still love dancing, although these days it’s reserved for nights out with friends. I do love a spontaneous boogie when a good song comes on though; it always puts you in a great mood!

“IT’S NOT AS GLAMOROUS AS IT MAY SEEM – IT’S HARD WORK – BUT VERY REWARDING AS WELL, AND DEFINITELY A THRILL.”

84

HOW DID THE STEP TO STUNTWORK IN HOLLYWOOD COME ABOUT? A friend recommended my fiancé, Jack Field, for some work that came up. I was there to liaise on the stunts they wanted and be a mechanic for him, but when they found out I could drive as well, they put me to work! Obviously, my riding and driving skills are utilised but things like timing and choreography are also handy skills which I learnt from dancing.

and surround yourself with like-minded people. I guess I have maybe changed my outlook on it; instead of thinking someone is sexist, I simply figure they don’t know what I’m capable of and let my actions speak for themselves. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF FIT AND SAFE IN THIS DANGEROUS JOB? I train a lot and eat lots of healthy meals! Fitstop Australia will see me at their facility every day of the working week while I’m at home, and when I travel, I take the workouts with me and replicate them in the hotel gym or in a park depending on the exercises. Healthy eating is extremely important in maintaining energy levels, concentration and focus, and eating a good portion of food keeps me happy too! ARE YOU EVER TERRIFIED OF A STUNT IN A SHOW OR ON THE SILVER SCREEN? Whenever there is risk involved, safety is of course the main priority. Although we are pushing boundaries for both machines and bodies, it is calculated, and with the right training, it can be done safely while being exhilarating, fun and entertaining at the same time.

WHAT DO YOU PARTICULARLY LOVE ABOUT STUNTWORK? It’s always incredible to be part of creating or working on bringing a movie storyboard to life. I’ve been very lucky in working with some talented and professional crews. It’s not as glamorous as it may seem – it’s hard work – but very rewarding as well, and definitely a thrill.

AWAY FROM THE DAY JOB, ARE YOU EQUALLY INTO ADRENALINEPUMPING SPORTS AND EXPERIENCES? For sure! It’s all about experiencing and testing skills as well as just getting out and being active. From sky-diving to wake surfing and everything in between, I am lucky to have a rad bunch of humans I call friends who are always ready for a new adventure.

HAVE YOU FOUND ANY LIMITATIONS OR SEXISM IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I have been fortunate enough to work with so many positive and supportive people but there will always be others with differing opinions. While you can’t necessarily change the views of others, you can focus on what’s important to you

HOW DO YOU RELAX? Spending time with family and friends is a great way to unwind. I also love being outdoors and appreciating the natural beauty we have in this world. I am definitely known for spending lots of time appreciating wildlife, especially our Australian wildlife!
