Our Community through the Years It seems like only yesterday that the Australian International School first opened its doors back in 1993. Some members of ANZA may still remember those early days at our original campus in Mount Sophia, where we began delivering an Australian curriculum-based education to a cohort of just 32 students – and what a journey it’s been ever since! Over the last 25 years we’ve seen 4 campuses, 5 Principals and over 2000 students graduating from our Secondary School program.
The Early Learning Vi world-leading purpos littlest learners, aged 2 m A new Senior building opened to accommodate Year 10, 11 and 12 students. This wing incorporates private study space, 35 classrooms and a new Science and Technology area.
Here’s a look back at some of the highlights from the Australian International School’s history…

E DI TOR’S NOTE
OCTOBER 2018 “Singapore is a fantastic place to reinvent your sporting self.”
Y
ears before I fell in love with words and stories, I had another all-consuming passion – sport. As a child I learnt to swim in Singapore’s many pools, with a local instructor introducing me to the joys of weightlessly gliding through the water. Back home in Australia, all those hours spent in chlorinated water led me to
competitive swimming and pre-dawn squads. After my swimming career ended in my teens, I discovered team sports; relishing the comradery, fun, friendship and shared goals. There was no sport I didn’t give a go – I rowed, played water polo, skied, hit the netball courts, rock climbed, surfed and ran. Sport charged me with endorphins, sharpened my coordination, problem solving and strategic skills. It also gave me a sense of responsibility and pride – both in myself, my teams, and the young adults I ended up coaching. In my thirties I thought my competitive sports days were over, until one day on a whim I signed up for an open water race, and all those feelings of being part of something self-esteem boosting and wonderful resurfaced. That’s the thing about sport, there’s no final siren – even as the wrinkles, creaky joints and grey hairs descend, you can keep finding new ways to move your body. I now love gentle, uncompetitive yoga, walking and swimming…although I must admit my laps are a little lazier these days! Singapore is a fantastic place to reinvent your sporting self – with hundreds of groups out there making the most of the year-round warm weather to paddleboard, windsurf,
sail, skate, surf, cycle, kayak, hike, and more. As an organisation, ANZA’s main arteries have always been our sporting groups. Our adult and kids sporting teams get out there week-in-week out, forming a tight knit community, having a blast, keeping fit and active, and learning new skills. Our incredible, dedicated volunteers and coaches devote their time and energy to keeping the oranges cut, the courts booked, and the rules followed. So this issue, we’re saluting sports – from the helpers who use their one day off a week to play volleyball or jump in a dragon boat, to extreme explorer Grant Rawlinson, who’s preparing to finish his mammoth 12,000km row from Singapore to New Zealand and Tom Woods – one of the world’s youngest high level race callers. This month also marks World Mental Health Day, so take a moment to ask yourself, and those around you – RU OK? It’s not always easy being an expat, and we need to look out for each other. Lastly, get out there and try a new sport – all you need to do is flick through this magazine for tons of ideas!

G
’day and welcome to the October issue of our gorgeous ANZA Magazine! As much as I adore all our magazine editions and their special themes, this month’s sports theme is always one that I get particularly excited about, purely because it’s focused on sport...no surprises there! As we are no doubt all aware ANZA has a diverse array of sports for kids and bigger kids and sport is central to ANZA’s pure existence. Singapore is a superb country in which to embrace an active lifestyle, so with ANZA being in Singapore there are definitely no excuses! I feel very honoured in my role as President to be approached by both members and nonmembers commenting on the quality of our sporting programs – which are volunteer driven. Sport brings people from all around the world together - our members are from over 50 different nationalities - it brings families together, and is crucial in the development of key life skills for young children. It’s also important for the big kids in maintaining an active lifestyle to support the obvious health, well-being and social benefits. As much as watching sport is fun, playing it is even better! I’m actually writing this message whilst on the exercise bike at the gym. Love a little multi-tasking!
I’m not sure what my Mum or I would have done without sport growing up. I must have been ridiculously easy to manage as a child - send me outside with a football and be home before dark... thanks Mum! This edition has some interesting insight into the benefit of sports; swimming for kids, domestic helper sports programs, extreme sports, and the best sports venues in Singapore (from horse-riding to rock climbing). We also have a feature on Grant Rawlinson, who is attempting to finish his row from Singapore to New Zealand. If you’re looking to be a sports spectator, we have the WTA Finals in Singapore this month, and we just witnessed another memorable AFL Grand Final, NRL Grand Final, and Bledisloe Cup series (if you’re a New Zealander, another humbling year for the Wallabies...). Stay active and stay smiley ANZA!

What are the key things expats need to know about insurance in Singapore? While many expats will naturally think about their medical insurance when coming to Singapore, it’s important to also ensure you’re not under-insured for personal accidents, travel and home insurance as well. You can find out more by searching online or speaking to an insurance agent or broker who can ensure you get the best protection for your needs. ANZA Magazine is celebrating sports this month – what are your favourite ways to get active in Singapore? Jogging through the heart of the city and around the parks, gardens and green spaces would be my favourite way to get active. I’m amazed by the fine balance between urban high rises and lush tropical greenery in Singapore. What are your favourite secret spots in Singapore? My favourite spot is the TreeTop Walk from MacRitchie Nature Trail and Reservoir Park. It’s a 250-metre aerial free standing suspension bridge, spanning the two highest points within MacRitchie.

risbane-based artist Benjamin Werner’s new body of work is destined for the Australian High Commission in Singapore as part of the exhibition, In Bloom this October. Werner’s practice revolves around optics and colour, involving oil painting, LED artworks and installations; all centred on light-based and painterly studies taken from many cities around the world. He talked to Louise Martin-Chew about his work. How are these paintings produced? I’ve always been inspired by the city at night. I’m particularly influenced by the ‘bokeh’ photographic technique, an approach which selectively creates blurriness in certain areas. I’ve been experimenting with maximising this effect to create new kinds of landscape in my paintings and installations.

What do you find so inspiring in large Asian cities? I have visited Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Singapore regularly in recent years. They have an urban atmospheric which I love. I spent some time in the forests outside the cities, and saw clouds of fireflies. I have painted these fireflies as lit circular shapes, like glowing and coloured energy. They have a haze of warmth that seems to hold the darkness of the forest at bay.
The forest environment and lit blooms look unnatural, even artificial, in your paintings, why? It’s really about how I see the urban nightlife mirrored in nature. The dance of male fireflies, glowing in search of a mate, is not too different to humans peacocking in front of each other in nightclub districts. It is this biological conversation seen so clearly in nature that I’m most interested in. No matter how urbane or technologically advanced we become, nature has a way of reminding us that we are just a small part of it. This to me is a very humbling and important idea worth sharing. Many of these paintings are very large scale, and often closing out the horizon. What drives their aesthetic? They have become mindscapes I suppose, with their stippled colour, dark verticals, and leaning shadows. While they started in the forests, in the process of the painting they have become a meditative and reflective exploration of another, more internal place. For me they are a mystical adventure, where the glowing lights might suggest some magical potential – out there in the darkness. In Bloom will be exhibiting in the Australian High Commission Atrium from 5 October – 7 November.

SINGAPORE NIGHT FESTIVAL
Outfits made entirely from bicycle inner tubes, lightening duels and glowing white horses – this year’s Singapore Night Festival (SNF) certainly electrified its audience! New Zealand’s own World of WearableArt (WOW) showcase was a highlight amongst the line-up of breathtaking performances and eye-catching art. Housed in the National Design Centre, WOW’s unique garments, including that of Singaporebased designer Galina Mihaleva, captured crowds with their unconventional designs and texture. Mihaleva's garment entitled “Life Pulse” was inspired by the vascular system, and is a dynamic composition of 3D shapes, made from laser-cut felt and metallic lycra. The use of the colour red is also meaningful, says Mihaleva. “Red is the colour of life and creation, the energy and driving force to do things, and the passion to imagine and empower.”

Earlier this year the remains of fallen New Zealand serviceman, Sgt George Nepia Jr, were returned from Singapore to New Zealand. Sgt Nepia died while on active service in Malaya in 1954, and was buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Kranji, Singapore. He has been returned to his family/whanau as part of the Government’s Te Auraki (The Return) programme, under which the New Zealand Defence Force is repatriating the remains of New Zealand personnel buried overseas between 1955 and 1971. Sgt Nepia was returned alongside 27 other defence force personnel and one child from Malaysia, who were welcomed back to New Zealand in a moving ceremony at Auckland International Airport in August. We thank Singapore and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for their impeccable care of Sgt Nepia Jr for the past 64 years, and for their support in helping us return him to his family.

Once again, the annual ANZ Aotearoa Ball 2018 was a hit, drawing Kiwis and friends of New Zealand from all corners of Singapore. The NZ Chamber of Commerce turned 35 this year, and this year’s Ball was bigger and more glamorous as a result! Held at the Shangri La, Into The Wilderness was a celebration of all things New Zealand, and included many “firsts” – including the first video message from Prime Minister Ardern, the first New Zealand art gallery and silent auction, and the very first flossing dance competition! Undoubtedly, the Ball would not have been possible without the team at NZ Chamber of Commerce, who have worked tirelessly to make the event a tremendous success. Here’s a toast to the Ball’s sub-committee – thank you for making it a night to remember.

ALL THINGS GOING TO PLAN, EXTREME ADVENTURER GRANT RAWLINSON WILL COMPLETE THE FINAL LEG OF HIS HOME-TO-HOME EXPEDITION LATER THIS YEAR, AN ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL FROM SINGAPORE TO NEW ZEALAND USING ONLY HUMAN POWER, NO ENGINES, NO SAILS. WHAT MAKES HIM TICK?
Where’s home in NZ? A farming community called Stratford in the province of Taranaki in the North Island. I’m coming up to twenty years living in Singapore. Tell us about Home-To-Home. I started the journey on 3 January, 2017 and expected to be finished by December 2017. I travelled 10,000km by human power for 147 days to reach the east of Australia. My attempt to row the final stage across the Tasman Sea ended after 24 days at sea when I was blown back into the shores of Australia with adverse wind patterns. What training have you done? I trained and prepared for four years
20 anza
before the expedition took place. Physical training was 10 percent of the entire effort. With a budget of SGD$400,000, raising sponsorship, planning, forming a team, risk management, emergency response, boat building and food preparation all took a massive effort.
How do you keep your mind strong during long hours in the boat? It is very tough mentally to be at sea, by yourself, in a small boat, in rough weather. I try many techniques; meditating, thinking of my wife and kids, singing, reading, crying, sleeping, all with limited amounts of success.
What’s been the greatest challenge? As I’m almost finished the journey, I can say that human beings have been the greatest challenge. Navigating the complex web of human emotions, my own self-doubts, man-made restrictions and regulations, and large ships plying the waters. Apart from that, it’s the wind; everything in ocean rowing depends on the wind.
Are you ever really scared out there? Yes, at night time when I am in shipping lanes in stormy weather and large ships are coming directly towards me, during electrical storms, and when I have to swim to fix the boat in storms. How has playing high level rugby prepared you for extreme adventures? Rugby taught me teamwork and what

makes great teams. It also toughened me up physically and mentally. After breaking my legs, wrists, ribs, teeth, fingers, nose and ankle and being concussed, injuries are no big deal. I was always very small as a player but I lost my fear of tackling huge players after realising by focussing and honing my skills to perfection I could overcome a massive challenge, and that’s something I took into the world of adventure. What do your friends and family think of your adventures? My family worry about me at times and are happy when I come home safely. But they are supportive, and have never asked me not to go. There is a huge amount of trust involved - they see the amount of work I do to prepare and trust I will make the right decisions to always come home safely. That is also a big

motivation for me to be safe out there, trust is the strongest emotional force I know. How would you feel if your twin daughters grow up to be explorers? Very proud. The world needs more people exploring and setting positive examples of what sustainable achievement can look like. I hope they will be sustainable living role models to others, like I am trying to be to them. What is your advice to anyone contemplating a big adventure? Contemplating it, coming up with the idea, dreaming it, that’s the easy part. Anyone can have an idea. Implementing that idea is the test. And for that you need honesty. Undertaking one of these projects is a true test of your authenticity. If you are not 100 percent genuinely
committed to taking on a massive exploratory project you will be exposed very early on, as soon as the first of the thousands of hurdles and road blocks occur you will quit. So be honest with yourself, about how much you want this. And if it’s not 100 percent, then don’t start. What is your other business? I run my own human development company called Powerful Humans, named after my love of human powered exploration. I give inspiring keynote talks, professional coaching and decision making workshops. The workshops are simulated expedition experiences which put people into my shoes; to make the critical decisions I had to make, but without the dangerous consequences. It’s very rewarding using my own personal experiences to help high performance team’s work more effectively together and I literally love my job.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY IS ON WEDNESDAY 10 OCTOBER, WITH DEPRESSION AS THIS YEAR’S FOCUS. DR MÉLI NOËL AT IMC JELITA TALKS TO ANZA ABOUT SPOTTING THE SIGNS AND FINDING SUPPORT. How often do you see patients with mental health challenges in your clinic? If everyone could be in the shoes of a family doctor for a day, they would see how common mental health issues are. They can affect everyone from children to the elderly - I see at least two to three patients per day who are currently struggling with, or have had mental health issues in the past. Despite all the awareness efforts that have been focused on mental health in the past years, it is still very taboo. It shouldn’t be! Suffering from mental health issues is no more shameful or a sign of weakness than being diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure. What are the most common mental health issues you see in expats? In Singapore, the most common mental health issues are depression and anxiety. For expats, things like the stress of relocating to a new country, being away from family and friends, changing jobs or having to stop working to follow a spouse, and having to settle the kids in a new routine, can take a toll on mental health. I also see a lot of teenagers with anxiety or depression triggered by intense pressure to perform in international schools, best friends leaving the country, or bullying. What support is available for someone suffering from depression? Having an open chat with your family doctor can go a long way, and we can give you useful lifestyle advice and do basic blood work to rule out a physical cause and even prescribe medication if needed. Singapore has amazing psychologists and counsellors that can support you on your road to recovery as well. Psychiatrists can help navigate more complex and severe cases.
What is your advice to someone suffering from depression? If you are experiencing some of the symptoms of depression, you should talk to your family doctor. We are a great first step on the road to recovery. If making an appointment with your doctor feels like a huge task, reach out to a loved one and ask them to help you and bring you to the appointment. Depression can feel like it is untreatable and will never end, but there are many effective treatments, and by seeking help you are making the first step towards recovery, and eventually happiness and contentment.
DID YOU KNOW? WOMEN ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION AS MEN. BUT IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE MORE WOMEN SEEK HELP FOR THEIR SYMPTOMS

Everyone can experience days of feeling blue, due to homesickness or other life ups and downs. But depression is characterised by symptoms that are present for at least two weeks and can include: Depressed mood most of the day, every day (feeling sad or empty, being tearful) Loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy Changes in appetite and sleep pattern (either insomnia or sleeping more than usual) Loss of energy or fatigue Feelings of guilt or worthlessness, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and recurrent thoughts about death and suicide.

How do I make the most of my Super?
•
Should I review my Super life insurance to check it’s sufficient cover and the premiums are still good value?
•
If I need to send money home, what is the best and most cost-effective way to do so?
•
I have a will in Australia, is this enough or should I have a will in Singapore and another in Australia?

KAROLA CLARK DISCOVERS A VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE THAT’S BUILDING A VALUABLE COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT NETWORK FOR DOMESTIC HELPERS.
E
xpat life can be lonely, even if you have your family with you for support. Imagine arriving alone, having left your children and family behind to move in with strangers. That’s the reality for most domestic helpers in Singapore. Recognising that sports and teamwork can help build a community and provide a much-needed support network, Filipina expat Dinx Carin and some of her friends founded a volleyball league for Filipinas in Singapore. “We had a vision to unite foreign workers, especially domestic helpers, in staying active, gaining new friends, relieving stress and promoting health, happiness and positivity by playing volleyball.”
Fulfilling and fun
The league, called SportsatSG, holds matches every Sunday, usually at

Kallang’s OCBC arena. Since beginning in 2015 with a handful of teams, it now has between 24 and 42 teams each season, in three divisions. Of the more than 400 players, 80% are domestic helpers. When the league first started, Carin had no idea how popular it would become. “At the beginning, it was just a project for passion, to make a difference. Foreign workers, especially maids, get lonely, get stressed, and need some friends. It helps them to be active, it really refreshes body, mind and soul. Some of our players even have their employers come to watch and support their game. It is so fulfilling.” Carin and the organising committee make sure the league is a fun place for the ladies to spend their only day off. “We take lots of pictures, with videos and selfies posted on our social media. They show it to their families back home,

updating them on what kind of activities they are involved in here in Singapore during their off day.” To get involved, prospective players can send a message via the SportsatSG Facebook page. Individuals are matched with a team looking for players. For those who want to register a new team, the cost is around $400. Like any community-run sports league, funding is a constant challenge. Although the registration fees contribute to the arena booking fees, it can be difficult to book the venue. “We’d like to block-book the OCBC arena to make sure we can play there every week but it’s expensive. So we do ad-hoc bookings and have to compete for slots with many other people who want to use the stadium. We’ve tried other venues but they are mainly outdoors and it’s too hot.” The organisers are trying to get more sponsors involved to supply prizes and sponsor the end-of-season medal ceremony. Some past sponsors have also supplied products as giveaways for the players. “Because it’s an all-girl league, we had a company supply feminine hygiene products for the teams. Those items can be expensive so the girls were really pleased.”
SMASHING STEREOTYPES
Filipino Jen Macapagal has the goal of making sports in Singapore more inclusive and accessible to helpers through her movement Race2Share.
What is Race2Share? Currently, R2S works very closely with foreign domestic workers - with the aim to empower them through sports. What results have you seen both in and out of the boat? The ladies have been heavily involved in dragon “It really helps me to deboating since April last year, and I have seen their stress on my day off. WALK BUKIT GOMBAK AND “LITTLE GUILIN” Discover a little region of China tucked away in Singapore on this 7km Charity Walk. Let your feet do the work and we will donate the proceeds to ANZA charities. Discover Bukit Town Park, created from a disused granite quarry. The park is also known as Little Guilin because of its similarity to the region of the same name in China. You’ll discover Bukit Batok,
meaning the coughing hills, named after the sound of explosions when it was still operating as a quarry. Walk alongside the Green Corridor, a 26km trail where the old railway from Singapore to Malaysia used to run. Finishing at King Albert MRT, this walk is a delight for nature lovers and will suit most levels of fitness.
DEEPAVALI WALK IN LITTLE INDIA Deepavali – the Festival of Lights, is the most important festival of the year for Hindus. Come on this walk to find out how people of Hindu faith celebrate this very colourful holiday. Check out Serangoon Road and its back streets, and discover interesting shops selling spices, textiles and garlands. Learn about the history of the area and see the beautiful architecture
of the rainbow-hued terrace houses. Hear about the Gods in the oldest Hindu temple in the area and witness how the devotees pray. Taste delicious Indian snacks and ‘pulled’ tea. Curious about how a sari is tied? A seamstress will do a live demonstration just for us! You have the option of staying on for lunch at the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Little India.
FOODIE ADVENTURES IN LITTLE INDIA Learn about Singapore’s food traditions and history in the company of our “foodie” guide and One Farrer Hotel’s dynamic chef. Walk through Little India, and learn about its colourful history, and visit one of Singapore’s most iconic markets to learn about the ingredients we will later cook with. Take the MRT back to the hotel for refreshments, followed by a tour of
the hotel’s private rooftop farm with amazing views over Little India. Handpick fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs to bring to the cooking studio, then make your own Butter Chicken, Indian Prawn Curry and Vegetable Biryani Rice with poppadum and chutney, and savour the “fruits of your labour” at the end of the session.
CHRISTMAS DELIGHTS AT POLLEN You might have been to the Flower Dome, but have you seen the spectacular Christmas installation, promising more than a Myer Christmas window? Be one of the first to view the 2018 display and get into the Christmas spirit. Our afternoon starts with a delicious savoury and sweet
afternoon high-tea experience at the award-winning Pollen Restaurant at Gardens by the Bay. Afterwards, wander through the blooms of the dome at your leisure. Remember Santa is from the North Pole, so bring something warm to wear inside the chilly dome.
FOOD AND HERITAGE IN JALAN BESAR We welcome you to Jalan Besar, where hardware stores and machinery repair shops mingle with hipster cafes. The fascinating area has two personalities traditional stores trade during the day and a totally different set of businesses fire up at night. We will hear stories of the most
famous nightclub of a bygone era and also the infamous ‘Thieves Market’ which operated for 80 years. Discover striking shophouses, some which boast facades seen nowhere else in Singapore. And true to Singapore’s heritage, of course there is the food! JB is a food bloggers favourite.

VANISHING TRADES
Singapore is a country hurtling towards modernity, but with so much innovation, what will happen to her ancient trades? PIP HARRY joined ANZA Tours to discover the ways of a traditional shoemaker, a giant joss stick maker, and birdcage builder.
A bird in the hand
Our first stop is Mr Teng’s birdcage store - Cage Making 159 - in Ang Mio Kio. We gather around his small workspace, surrounded by richly decorated bamboo cages of all shapes, colours and designs. This self-taught cage maker uses heat to
A sticky business
A visit to Tay Guan Heng uncovers a centuries-old method of making giant joss sticks and other festive decorations. Albert Tay shows us around the small manufacturing factory in Ang Mio Kio Industrial Park, demonstrating moulding techniques, and letting us handle the clay. “We’re one of the only joss stick makers in Singapore, still producing our sticks by hand,” says Tay. “We have been here for 100 years.” The joss sticks are burnt to give thanks to the Gods and protect families, and are often decorated with neon

bend and shape the bamboo strands, adding silk sunshades made by his wife, and carving intricate designs into the wooden embellishments. Mr Teng’s passion began as a young boy and he’s spent his life perfecting his trade. Mr Teng hopes to keep his family business alive; his 12 year old grandson has shown some interest in the trade. Mr Teng adores the birds – also acting as a bird sitter, birdsong judge and trainer. He feeds the pampered animals a mix of ginseng and cod liver oil, to strengthen their vocal cords for competition.
He ensures the birds are surrounded by other feathered friends, saying; “if birds are lonely they will die of heartsickness.” The adjacent Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club is Singapore’s largest public area to admire the sweet tones of competitive birdsong. There are over 400 poles in the peaceful green space – each bird sings from cages hanging from them. There are three categories on which the bird is judged: amplification, melody and pitch. The top performing birds cost a pretty penny - up to SGD$100,000.
spray paint, fierce dragons and Chinese characters. The clay is made from a wild cinnamon tree wood powder. Once shaped, the sticks dry in the sun for up to four days. The giant joss sticks take around 12-14 hours to burn, and are popular around the Seventh Month Festival in Singapore, as well as other religious periods. One of eight children, Tay grew up around the business, learning the tricks of the trade, but times are changing. “This is a dying trade,” he laments. “Joss sticks used to be made 14-16 feet tall, and were in high demand. That’s not the case any more.”

If the shoe fits
Our final stop is in the Chinatown area, at Lee Hoi Wah Shoes. Mr Lee runs a small bespoke shoe store from an HDB (Block 9, Jalan Kukoh #03-73) He measures his customer’s feet precisely, hand cuts the leather, then stitches and crafts the shoes in exacting detail. He’s even made shoes for Singapore’s founding PM, Lee Kuan Yew. “This shop has been here since 1951,” says Mr Lee. “My father was also a shoemaker. Each pair of shoes takes three to-six months to create and costs a minimum of SGD$500.
“This trade is no more,” says Mr Lee. “The new generation isn’t interested. It’s happening here, and in Europe, too.” Still, when we are in Mr Lee’s store, his customers continue to turn up, keen to obtain a oneof-a-kind pair of shoes from a master shoemaker. As our tour comes to a close, I notice a trio of giant joss sticks smouldering in the HDB void deck. I take a moment to quietly appreciate their beautiful, handcrafted design, and hope Singapore’s ancient trades endure as long as possible.

DAY 1
ARRIVE AND EXHALE
MORNING: After a short morning flight from Singapore and an easy one-hour drive from Phuket Airport, we arrive at Sri Panwa just in time for lunch. Baba, the resort’s restaurant concept, has six dining locations with a wide range of culinary offerings, from Thai soul food to elegant Japanese, and even an onsite cooking school. After a stroll around the beautiful grounds, we settle at Baba Hot Box for lunch. Nestled in a quiet corner and surrounded by verdant forest, this casual BBQ diner serves succulent grilled meats, seafood and vegetables, and is located in The Habita, the resort’s newest enclave, which houses two restaurants, 20 pool suites, and 10 spectacular penthouses; all of which are sunset facing. After a hearty lunch, it’s time to check into our villa. Hidden behind large carved wooden doors is a private and calm onebedroom villa with spacious rooms and an expansive sundeck. The main bathroom has a Jacuzzi big enough for two, and a steam room. Drink in the breathtaking ocean views from a second open air outdoor Jacuzzi, or just drift in the dreamy 12m infinity lap pool. It’s easy to pass the time here, cozied up on the plush day bed, listening to the curated playlist. From almost every spot in the villa you can enjoy epic sunrises, sensational sunsets and quiet starlit nights. If you can drag yourself from your villa, a dedicated activities team offers a healthy choice of fun-filled pursuits, from snorkeling and diving, to watersports, a games room, art classes, and more. The resort also boasts two tennis courts, a state-ofthe-art gym with its own boxing ring, and gorgeous communal swimming pools. If the call to venture out is strong, the resort offers yachting excursions and speed boat trips to neighbouring Racha, Coral and Lone Islands. AFTERNOON: Scattered over 40 acres of tropical hillside surrounds, moving around the resort could be challenging, but fear not, Sri Panwa has a flotilla of Tuk Tuks ready and waiting to whisk you to your chosen destination. Our evening starts with cocktails and Mexican tapas at Baba Nest rooftop bar. I savour my tom yum inspired cocktail, relaxing in a plush beanbag and taking in the magnificent views across the island. As the sun starts to set, a golden hue ascends over the Andaman Sea. It’s no wonder Baba Nest was recently named in the top three best beach bars in the world. We dine at Baba Soul, which showcases a traditional Thai menu and unsurprisingly boasts its own breathtaking views.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
With a warm, tropical climate, it’s nearly always a good time to visit Phuket. But the best time is between November and February. The rainy monsoon season runs from mid-May to October.
GOOD TO KNOW The general rule in Phuket is don’t drink the water from the tap, and instead rehydrate with bottled water. Ice in tourist zones and hotels is usually safe and made with filtered water.
SRIPANWA.COM
and the decision is easy. I wrap up my hands, slip on some gloves, strap on some shin pads, and (after a clumsy fight with the boxing ring ropes!) I’m ready to go. It’s been a while since I last hit pads and although it’s heaps of fun and a great workout, I have to ask my trainer to lower the height of the pads, along with his expectations of my side kicks. Appetite fuelled, I head to Baba Pool club where daily breakfast is served; a vast array of Western and Asian choices with a sprawling buffet and a la carte selection, including plenty of healthy options. We spend the rest of the morning relishing the solitude of our villa, alternating between cooling off in our private pool and the comfort of the loungers. Unable to sacrifice the seclusion, I opt to watch the paddle boarders below, rather than join them… maybe tomorrow. AFTERNOON: A trusty Tuk Tuk arrives to whisk us off to Baba Sunset Lounge for our Thai cooking class. Chef takes us through the culinary steps to create Som Tam Goong (papaya salad) and Tom Ka Gai (chicken-coconut soup). Afterwards, we enjoy the fruits of our labour for lunch. Our dishes would have been plenty, but there is a large array of delicious seafood dishes filling the long table and we tuck in! After all the feasting, I walk down the hill for a tennis lesson to work it off. Like many of the dedicated resort staff, tennis coach Toon has worked at Sri Panwa since it opened 12 years ago. The team here is like one big family. Toon is a great coach and delightful company and I have a heap of fun hitting balls and working up a sweat. Finally, the time arrives for my 90-minute massage at Cool Spa. After two hefty sports sessions I choose the Deep Relax: an invigorating deep tissue massage focusing on pressure points
and realigning the deeper layers of the muscles. I leave with my tired body feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated. EVENING: At nightfall, Baba Pool Club transforms into a hip nightspot serving signature cocktails. On the recommendation of bar staff I try the famous Baba Daiquiri and sit back in a nest of plump cushions to enjoy a spectacular fire show. Dinner tonight is at Baba Iki; renowned for serving up some of the best Japanese cuisine on the island. The restaurant’s head chef was trained by the legendary Iron Chef Boontum and this is reflected in the quality of the Omakase menu, which includes Hokkaido scallop seasoned with yuzukocho and truffle oil, blue fin tuna sushi with egg yolk and lime, and red seabream smoked with straw. But the pièce de résistance is the melt-in-the-mouth deep fried Japanese Wagyu Beef from Hakata with Japanese curry sauce. Beware the call of ‘IKI!’ which in Japanese means ‘drink’ something we hear often throughout the evening!
DAY 3 MORNING: Waking at 6am to the sound of waves lapping on the
shore is a sublime way to start the day. I’m not usually an early riser, but I want to squeeze in every remaining moment in my amazing villa. During my stay at Sri Panwa my book stays in my suitcase, both TVs in the villa are switched off and I only use my phone briefly to let my family know I’m alive. In this spirit I use the earliest hours of my last day to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views stretching to the horizon, swim, and relax on the sundeck. Eventually the call of the pristine beach below gets the better of me and I head down the steps to stand up on the paddle board and kayak in the calm waters off the floating jetty an apt close to a glorious getaway.

BEVAN COLLESS OF SINGAPORE PHYSIO HEADS FOR JAPAN’S SKI FIELDS DURING THE COUNTRY’S WINTER MONTHS, WHERE HE ALSO RUNS NISEKO PHYSIO. COLLESS GIVES US HIS EXPERT TIPS FOR STAYING INJURY-FREE ON THE SLOPES THIS SEASON.
H
aving spent the past 14 winters working in Japanese ski resorts, I’ve seen a lot of injured skiers and snowboarders. So, as many prepare for a well-earned holiday from Singapore’s heat, to the snow-filled mountains in Japan, I thought I’d provide some information and tips on how to avoid finding yourself in one of our clinics. Once-a-year skiers are at the highest risk of injury. The balance and strength required for skiing are quite a shock to bodies that are conditioned to long periods sitting in an office each day. The most common injuries sustained by skiers are: Head injuries (5-10%) Knee injuries (35%) Fractures (thumbs and wrist) (5%) Dislocations (especially shoulders) (5%) Miscellaneous sprains (20%) Head injuries are the most dangerous of all skiing injuries. Most fatal injuries occur in people skiing at high speeds, out of control, and hitting a solid, fixed object. To avoid head injuries: wear a helmet, ski in control, match your speed to the conditions, and always look where you are going. There is a saying in ski resorts that everyone you see on crutches is a skier and everyone you see with their arm in a sling is a snowboarder, and there is some truth to this. Knee injuries are the most common of all ski injuries. Snowboarders have a much lower incidence of knee injuries, but experience a much higher
44 anza
JapanSki_Oct18.indd 44
rate of wrist injuries. Meniscus, medial collateral ligaments (MCL) and the dreaded anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common. If you come across an injured skier remember to place your skis in a cross above them, call Ski Patrol and do NOT attempt to move the person if you suspect there is even a chance of a neck or back injury. As a physiotherapist, it is generally easier to assess people on the same day of the injury, the day after an injury swelling increases and assessment becomes more difficult.
1 Make sure both skis release from the bindings well – be a pest to your ski hire assistant and ask that they’re not too tight. 2 Condition your body to skiing. Commence a strengthening program a minimum of six weeks before you go. 3 Take care at the bottom of the run when turning around to see friends coming down – it’s a common time for injury. 4 Don’t ski aggressively when you are tired. It is usually the last run of the day that causes the injury. 5 Don’t get up too soon when you are falling or sliding. Wait until you stop and have your balance. 6 Many injuries occur walking on ice-covered roads and footpaths. Take shoes with good grip, buy some ice spikes, and wear gloves, so you walk with your hands out of your pockets to improve your balance. 7 Never deliberately fall over out of frustration. 8 Don’t ski after drinking. 9 Wear a helmet (especially kids) and if you are a beginner snowboarder also wear wrist guards – they do work to prevent wrist fractures. Both skiers and boarders should consider high-end knee braces – they do prevent knee injuries. 10 Although stretching before skiing will not help, ensure you warm up by doing an easy treadmill run first.
October 2018
13/9/2018 2:01:19 PM
To condition your body for skiing, cycling is a great idea, especially using larger gears and riding at a lower cadence (about 50rpm) with higher resistance – some hill repeats at Mt Faber are perfect, or an indoor bike is still effective. One legged mini-squats, step downs, or leg press machines are a great idea. Using a loop band around the ankles to do wide sideways steps (monster walks), walking or running upstairs and jumping split squats are also great. NISEKO, HOKKAIDO: Niseko is fast becoming the Aspen of Asia, with booming property prices, Michelin starred restaurants and premium concierge services. It is the biggest resort in Japan and gets around 15 metres of dry powder snow every season. HAKUBA, NAGANO: Located closer to Tokyo, in the Japanese Alps, Hakuba is a sprawling area of several resorts, the largest being Happo-one. The mountains are huge and accommodation is generally more affordable.
NOZAWA ONSEN: Also in Nagano, Nozawa is a quaint old Japanese resort famous for its narrow winding roads with hot-spring water flowing underneath. With great bowl skiing Nozawa is perfect for people wanting an authentic Japanese experience. Try to be there for the fire festival in mid-January. MYOKO KOGEN, NIIGATA PREFECTURE: Only 60 minutes’ drive from Nozawa Myoko is an up and coming resort that has a unique
micro-climate seeing it get 15 metres of snow fall, mostly in January and February. RUSUTSU: Only 45 minutes’ drive from Niseko Rusutsu is a smaller mountain, but has great off-piste skiing with an easy layout and hooded lifts, so you spend more time skiing and less time walking or traversing. Fewer people means more fresh tracks. A great day trip from Niseko, and lifts usually operate on high wind days when Niseko is closed.

THERE’S NO BETTER START IN LIFE FOR KIDS THAN GIVING THEM A LOVE OF MOVEMENT. TWO DEDICATED CHILDREN’S SPORTS COACHES TELL US HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHILD TO BE ACTIVE FOR LIFE.
V
ivian Eng plays rugby for the Singapore women’s team, is a former national soccer player, and a qualified preschool teacher. Eng teamed her twin passions by setting up VivoKids Singapore, a movement and multi-sport programme catering to kids aged 20 months to six years. Alongside introducing children to six different sports, they run holiday camps and sports-themed birthday parties for kids up to 12 years of age. Why did you set up VivoKids? Having coached for 10 years at various sport academies, and working in a preschool for a year, I felt that there was a lack of understanding of kids’ abilities and potential. I simply love kids, and I believe that sports are a great medium to reach out and bond with them. VivoKids was set up to offer the benefits of multi-sports to children of all abilities. Using age-appropriate equipment with fun, progressive games and drills, we hope kids will embrace an active and healthy lifestyle. You’re so fit yourself! What’s your own sports background? As a national athlete, I’ve played various sports in my younger
46 anza
years, specialising only in my late teens. My multi-sport exposure and background helped my development as a person and an athlete; and gave me the edge when I decided to pursue a new sport (rugby) in my late twenties. As a female athlete, who plays typical “boy sports” - soccer and rugby - I wanted to encourage more girls to be active and to engage in lifelong sports too. Sports is unisex and all girls should be given the same opportunities and visibility when it comes to sports! What age is best to start introducing sports to your child? When the child is still at infant/toddlers’ age you can expose them to a variety of movements, outdoor play - anything that involves both fine and gross motor skills is great. Once they hit 2.5 years and beyond, you can introduce them to sports, keeping in mind that it should be a wide variety, and that sessions should be age appropriate and fun. What are the benefits of multi-sports training for kids? Research has shown that the multi-sports approach helps build a solid physical development foundation as children get a chance

Sam Jackson, Managing Director of Marsden Swim School shares his tips for helping your child become a super swimmer in Singapore.
1
LEARN TO RELAX – a relaxed body is a buoyant body. Practice lots of back floats with your child, supporting them on your shoulder or gently supporting their neck. Let them feel how their breathing effects their buoyancy. The key is to relax all muscles… tense muscles are heavy! NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH – Learning to exhale (blow bubbles) is about the most important skill one can learn. This can be encouraged from 4-6 months old. Practise long, slow exhalations, working towards coming out of the water for a short breath in.
2
to learn a wide variety of movement skills, which can be transferred to many sports. Exposing them to a wide range of movement also reduces the risk of over-use injuries and burnout. Sport helps kids develop active lifestyle habits and all-round physical conditioning such as flexibility, core stability, strength, stamina, power and speed. Apart from reaping the physical benefits, they sharpen up problem solving, communication, team work and working independently. Why is sport great for kid’s socialisation? Playing interactive group games develops social interaction and communication skills. Problem-solving or cognitive skills such as counting, identifying colours, or learning body parts, are stimulated during games. As they grow older, they get exposed to cooperation and friendly competition in sports, where they learn about winning and losing, teamwork, sportsmanship, integrity, resilience and perseverance. What role can parents take in encouraging kids to participate in sports? Children model their parents’ behaviour and tend to inherit their habits. To encourage long term sports participation, parents should lead by example, adopting a healthy and active lifestyle and participating in regular exercise or sports activities. As a family, choose to head out to cycle or hike together, explore the outdoors and nature. To find out more head to vivokinetics.com
3
DEVELOP A BALANCED BODY, STRONG FOUNDATION – A balanced body in swimming is one that sits on top of the water. This is created through length and developing an effective kick. Practice lots of kicking on their backs, with straight legs. Ensure their neck is relaxed and encourage them to just look straight up! TECHNIQUE FIRST – Teach a child to swim well and you are providing them a life skill. Emphasise strong technique across all strokes, distance should only be added if they can keep their technique sound. FIND A REPUTABLE SWIM SCHOOL – Try find a school that teaches all the way through from babies to adults, from learn to swim to competitive squads, as kids will understand what is required at all stages of development. Also ensure they make it fun!

CALLING THE SHOTS Race Caller TOM WOOD is on track for a brilliant career.
A
fter spending nearly two years calling races at the Singapore Turf Club, New Zealander Tom Wood is now a Race Caller at The Hong Kong Jockey Club. The 28-year-old is one of the world’s youngest and most sought after callers. He shares his lifelong involvement with the racing industry and tips for next month’s Melbourne Cup. Your family is heavily involved in racing? I had racing in my blood right from the get go! My father was first a jumps jockey and then he and my mother trained thoroughbreds in Cambridge, New Zealand for a number of years. All my jobs as a teenager were in racing, I even ran my own photography business for a while selling racing photographs, then I worked as a broadcast cadet for the New Zealand Racing Board, which operates the broadcast arm of the TAB: Trackside Television. How did you get into calling? I moved into commentating trials in the Canterbury region and was mentored by Reon Murtha, a well-known name, not only in race broadcasting but also other sporting events like the Commonwealth Games.
How did you get the confidence to race call at a young age? It’s one of those things where you have to make it work, because if you don’t you look or sound stupid. Outside of my job, I’m actually quite a shy and quiet person. Race calling can be quite a lonely occupation in some respects, because once the race starts, its all on you, and there is nobody who can help you out.
What attributes do you need to be a race caller? Well the obvious is good eyesight and a decent voice. You also have to be quick thinking and have a good memory.

How do you prepare for calling races? It’s a case of studying the form and trying to work out what’s going to happen. Who is riding which horse? What barrier have they drawn? What weight are they carrying? Who might be the leaders of the race? I do all that preparation in the hope it takes the element of surprise out of the race. Things will still surprise you of course, but if you can read a race, it helps a lot. I also try to stencil the names and colours of the horses and jockeys into my brain as much as I can before the gates open.
WHO IS YOUR PICK FOR THE MELBOURNE CUP? It’s too early to tell at this stage, but probably a horse that comes from the northern hemisphere. They have a very good record in the race and are tough to beat.
HAVE YOU EVER WON BIG ON THE MELBOURNE CUP? Never! It’s such a hard race to have a bet on, 24 horses, two miles, so many unknowns. It’s a real headache.

COLOUR “This month’s theme is colour,” says ANZA Click! Photography coordinator BRENDAN PAGET. “Colour is everywhere. Some bold tones, some subtle. We had a really strong set of submissions for this theme, which was great to see.”
BRENDAN PAGET GREEN LIZARD “The Singapore Zoo is a place you always have on your list of locations to visit and this month we finally did! One of the most amazing colours that caught my eye, was the vivid green scales of this lizard. Looking closer, there are all the colours of the rainbow shown. Quite the colourful character!”

SHARING SINGAPORE STORIES ANZA Member KARIEN VAN DITZHUIJZEN writes about life for helpers in Singapore.
A
NZA member Karien van Ditzhuijzen recently published A Yellow House (monsoonbooks.co.uk) Set in Singapore, it tells the story of ten-year-old Maya, who helps ill-treated domestic workers. Karien also edited My Voice at Home (myvoiceathome.org), an anthology for local charity HOME, of stories written by domestic workers. Where is your home country? I was born an expat child, so even though I am technically from the Netherlands, I have lived outside the country for more than half my life. We have lived in Singapore for over six years, and for now this is home.
The ANZA Writers’ Group meets every second Tuesday of the month, 7pm, ANZA Office, 47A Kampong Bahru Road, 169361

Have you always been a writer? No, not at all, I actually have a degree in Chemistry and worked in the food industry for a decade developing ice cream recipes. I wrote my first book - a children’s book about my childhood in Borneo - when I was on maternity leave ten years ago. Since then I have written for magazines and blogs, as well as fiction. A Yellow House is my first full novel, and I only now really dare call myself ‘a writer’. What made you interested to tell the stories of FDW in Singapore? I grew up with domestic workers in the house myself and always felt a bit awkward
about how they left their own children behind in their home countries to take care of us. When I moved to Singapore and hired my own domestic helper I wanted to learn more about what motivates them and what their lives are like. I joined local charity HOME and met so many inspiring women through my work with them that I wanted to write and share their stories. They are an important part of the Singapore story, yet a voice not heard often in literature. What writing support have you had in Singapore? Through a friend I was introduced to the Singapore Writers’ Group and I met most of my writer friends there. I went to several sharing sessions and workshops organised by them. With writer friends we now critique each other directly. I’d also like to check out the ANZA Writers’ group! What has been your journey to publication in Singapore? Initially, I found an agent who helped me get my manuscript into shape, but then we parted ways, which was very frustrating at first. A friend introduced me to Monsoon Books Publisher, Philip Tatham. Monsoon is based in the UK, but with a focus on work set in South East Asia. Thankfully, they loved it and agreed to take it on. I also had some local publishers interested to take on the book. There are quite a few out here that are looking for new authors that have works set in Singapore, and the good news is you don’t need an agent to pitch to them. IY baking studio Funsiamo has taken Taiwan by storm, and promises to do the same in Singapore. The 1,200 square feet studio in Suntec features top-of-therange baking appliances, as well as a patient fleet of baking assistants. But don’t expect to have your cake without working up a sweat first. My daughter Sophie (8) and I team up and hit the ground running by choosing to make the ambitious Rainbow Cake, a five layer creation which requires whipping up a meringue, baking five separate layers of sponge, and decorating it with fluffy cream and a cake rainbow. There’s an iPad guide to keep us on track, a timer and all the ingredients are on hand. Once we find our feet, we’re soon baking up a storm! We’re both chuffed that our finished product looks quite a lot like the one in the brochure.
This is Funsiamo’s very first overseas outlet and it offers a library of recipes from Valrhona Banana Chocolate Cake, to macarons, fruit tarts, mousse cakes, Hokkaido cupcakes or adorable unicorn cakes. 15 recipes will roll out in phases within the first month with more in the pipeline. TASTE BUDS
TASTEBUDS The Butcher’s Kitchen Executive Chef CHUN KUN JIE dishes up comfort food that’s a snap to prepare.
Easy Oozy Cheesy Chicken “ This recipe is great as the natural saltiness that comes from the bacon gives the chicken a more intense flavour. With mozzarella cheese being added in, it gives the dish a complex flavour, which tastes a little milky and creamy, but soft and silky at the same time. The chicken is best served over mashed potatoes. It’s so easy to prepare because all you need is three main ingredients, and an oven!” – CHEF CHUN KUN JIE
INGREDIENTS Makes 1 serving 180g chicken breast 80g mozzarella cheese 6 strips bacon Simple seasoning of your choice i.e herbs and spices.
METHOD
1. Make a pocket in the middle of the chicken breast and stuff mozzarella cheese inside.
2. Season the chicken with your selected choice of seasoning. Wrap the chicken in strips of bacon. 3. Roll the chicken in cling film into a cylindrical shape and boil in hot water (90°C) for 15 minutes. 4. Take it out of the hot water, and bake in the oven at 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes until the bacon turns golden brown. 5. Plate and serve with creamy mashed potatoes and a simple gravy if desired.

omewhere along the trail of life I managed to pick up the phrase: “La Bella Figura”, literally translating as “the beautiful figure”, but also representing general presentation, manner and grace. It probably represents all that I have failed to attain when it comes to the right clothes and social presentation. It’s been used in literature for centuries and is often applied in reference to the likes of Sophia Loren, Monica Bellucci and the gang. It’s also a phrase that comes to mind when considering the taste of really good Brunello. In Montalcino the name Brunello denotes wine produced with 100% Sangiovese – it’s become one of Italy’s best-known and most expensive wines. The thing about Brunello’s is their sweeping form, characteristic extravagance and seamless sophistication. Sangiovese from Montalcino exudes lashings of cola, menthol, dried ginger, white pepper and cured meats as classic markers. Once bitten – those who are falling in love for the first time with this style – will become obsessed. One seldom recovers from a Brunello relationship. These markers are referred to by the Italians as “note balsamiche”. They tend to come and go through the life-cycle of the wines – eventually become a vital characteristic in the tapestry of style. The past few vintages have been nothing short of a rollercoaster-ride for collectors. Here is my basic, wine-stained rule of thumb for Brunello: 2010: A major turning point for Brunello in recent wine history. The dead-set sensational quality of initial tastings has doubled down with cellar age. The world turned its attention to Brunello with this vintage and sadly the prices have followed suit. If you want something special and have a lazy $100-$200 to lay down – get it. It won’t let you down. 2011: After every good vintage comes a difficult one, and this one is a doozey. Lean, nervy and agitated.
Even the very best of shifty wine salesmen will struggle to find words of encouragement for this year, sadly. 2012: More classic in style, with echoes of 2010 that will become louder with a couple more years of careful cellaring. Like that second, slightly less talented child, you will love him/her just the same, but their achievements may not quite reach the same heights. 2013: The wine world let out a sigh of relief this year, with good harvest levels and a certain richness that will promote early drinking. The well-made ones will cellar well for another 5-10 years. 2014: Run, Forest, Run! I have found little to love so far but will keep up the search in the interests of science and research. As with everything there will be exceptions to my sweeping generalisations, but these notes will probably stand you in good stead as a rule of thumb Happy hunting…

With the WTA Tennis Finals coming up this month, RAELENE TAN takes a look at how the game’s best female stars fuel up for competition.

ce! Deuce! Love! The anticipation, excitement and adrenalin mean only one thing–the WTA Finals are back or, to be precise, the BNP Baribas Women’s Tennis Association Finals Singapore presented by SC global. From 21-28 October, Singapore Indoor Stadium at Kallang, part of the iconic Singapore Sports Hub, will be a scene of activity. Catch it while you can, as 2018 sees the departure of this worldclass season-ending tennis tournament from Singapore after five years of hosting. The finale features the top eight elite women’s singles players and doubles pairs, which last year drew 133,000 fans for the week-long event that includes fringe activities for children and adults, like games-booths and autographsessions. FOOD FOR TENNIS STARS Tennis fans will be excited to watch players in action. Their agile bodies are testament to their optimal health, with coaches and nutritionists ensuring adequate meals. Prominent names, whether playing in this finale or not, have favourites when it comes to their taste-buds. Winner of the 2017 WTA Finals, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, is known to love candy. American Venus Williams enjoys doughnuts and cinnamon-rolls. Her younger sister Serena was quoted during a previous visit to Singapore, “My favourite food is watermelon.” Serena eats the fruit two or three times daily in this warm climate. Could that be the secret to her great tennis serve? Before matches, Spaniard Garbine Muguruza tucks into rice, chicken and potatoes. Her other indulgence is chocolate. Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic also enjoys sweet treats, including ice-cream, when she is not playing. Healthy food choices include salads and sushi, while before matches
pasta is a fast digesting source of carbs. Pizza is the choice of Simona Halep from Romania when she is not playing, while Latvian Jelena Ostapenko’s favourite food is pineapple and Naomi Osaka of Japan likes cup-noodles. Our very own Ashleigh Barty from Queensland loves her coffee, short and strong. Breakfast almost always includes Vegemite on toast, fruit snacks, plus lots of veggies with dinner. Chicken-wrap is also a favourite. ANZA Member, Garry Edgley, from Melbourne, is the Executive Chef with SATS Delaware North at the Singapore Sports Hub. He and his team are responsible for looking after the appetites of players and corporate guests. Garry shared, “Players are careful with what they eat and when they consume it. Their cuisine is generally high in carbohydrates and proteins, depending whether it is before or after a match.” FOOD FOR FANS Those guests fortunate enough to enjoy corporate hospitality at this year’s WTA Finals are assured of classy hospitality at the award-winning Racquet Club, where international selections with a strong local feel will be served and which have included past favourites such as wok-fried assorted seafood with Singapore chilli crab sauce and mini fried mantou, whole poached Atlantic salmon and Singapore prawn laksa, all creating lasting memories at this top level sporting event.

invite you now, just for a minute, to step away from the deafening roar of societal pressures. To softly shut the door on damning body-shaming, dietary guilt and vapid finger-pointing and encourage you, just for now, to forget all the things that you “should” be doing. The food you should be eating, the BMI you should be obtaining, the beauty regime you should be following and the way that – despite all these external pressures – you should still be able to love your body. I invite you, as you read this article, to lovingly turn your back on the centuries of culture and tradition that have spawned these ideals (they will be there when you return) and step with me into a deeper, simpler, more natural perception of your body. Because your body is exquisite; an amazing and complex expression of nature; an unfathomable tapestry of chemical and energetic processes and reactions, stitched together over billions of years of evolution. It is a mystery so deep that, even today, medical science is baffled by many of it’s capabilities. Your body is a wondrous example of balance, rejuvenation and renewal; a tireless and relentless healing machine that regenerates trillions of new cells each day and wards off most infections and disease with absolute ease. Your body is an intricate and inherent part of this universe. It is, quite literally, made of stardust and contains within it all the beauty of the universe around you; the stars, the galaxies, the very Earth you live on … all of these things are a part of YOU and your body. Put simply, your body is a magical, miraculous masterpiece and, most remarkable of all, your body is the best friend, wisest advisor and most powerful ally you could ever imagine! Over the past forty years, science has provided clinical evidence that your body has an incredible sixth-sense. Even when you are not aware, you are picking up on unconscious information that resonates in your cells, triggers physiological reactions
and affects your equilibrium. Therefore, with a little self-awareness, your body can be an incredible advisor when it comes to making healthy decisions. HOW TO TAP INTO YOUR BODY’S SIXTH SENSE: Firstly, learn your body’s “default” setting. When at rest, are you highly energised, or are you zen-like? Does your body have any naturally tense, cool or hot areas? What is your emotional state when you are alone? Then, practice self-awareness and pay close attention to any changes in your body’s default setting. When you are around certain people, do you feel more energised or are you more drained? When thinking of an opportunity or decision, does your body resonate as if you are telling the truth? Or does it feel heavy and constricted, as if you are being deceiving? This is your body’s way of giving you advice. Your body is incredible … and incredibly wise. Are you listening to it?

YOGA AS THERAPY research suggested that for every current teacher, there are two in training, so there’s plenty of enthusiastic but inexperienced teachers around). To help you, dear reader and potential yogi, I have made a short list of what you need to look for the next time you ask a yoga teacher for help with that torn Achilles tendon.
LEE CARSLEY explores how the ancient practice of yoga can be a powerful healing tool, especially if you ask the right questions.
1
Yoga is powerful medicine, but it takes its time. Look for someone who has had personal experience of its incremental and healing effects. Ask them about their approach to yoga as therapy. If you ask, what poses should I do for a knee injury? They should not be able to immediately prescribe a set of poses, unless they have already taken the time to get to know you. A yoga therapist will want to sit down with you, find out your history, and plan out the recovery. You will get more than the physical from a yoga therapist. You may be recovering from chemotherapy and come to a yoga class and feel some benefit (probably a lot). In yoga therapy, you might receive a set of targeted poses, breathing work, meditation and visualisations, to help your immune system physically and energetically recover from its beating. Check their qualifications. Like other forms of therapies, you don’t become qualified with five or even 10 weeks of training. There are a few yoga therapy courses in Singapore, most offer the basic 200 hour requirement. However, the ‘standard’ being set globally is 800 hours with the IAYT – International Association of Yoga Therapists.

ost people come to yoga with something to fix – physically, emotionally or spiritually. “Everyone who comes to yoga comes with issues in the tissues,” said a wise yogini, turned corporate mindfulness consultant, over a tofu salad the other week. My chopsticks stopped mid air, and I pondered. Most of my ANZA yogis have ‘issues’ – slight scoliosis, tight hips, plantar fasciitis, anxiety, sleeplessness. Sometimes they are just plain run down. I have seen yoga students come to practice to recover from cancer, a broken marriage, job loss. I have issues, too. We come to yoga, intuitively knowing that over time, with the right poses, patience and care from ourselves and our teacher, these issues will resolve. Many of our regular yogis extol the amazing therapeutic benefits from their yoga classes. More people are seeing yoga as a legitimate therapy, among others like physio, chiro, and acupuncture. Because yoga has such a powerful impact on the mind, body and soul, it is better to regularly practice with a teacher who has done more than the intro level 200 hour teacher training (Yoga Alliance
3
4
We mostly come to yoga to fix ourselves. After some practice, we become clearer about why we are really here. Be as clear as you can with your intentions, knowing they will evolve. And if you are a yoga teacher – or therapist - reading this, be clear about the orientation of your work, the level of your training and understanding, and be realistic about your yogic skill sets.

SHARK ATTACK Singapore loan sharks are getting more brazen and sophisticated in their harassment, and are targeting Domestic Helpers. Expat GLEN BARBER shares his personal story and tips for what to do if it happens to you.
“M
y wife, teenage daughter and seven-year-old son moved to Singapore in April 2017. It was our first international placement as a family and we were very excited. After six months we hired a live in helper - a very quiet and pleasant girl from Indonesia who had been working in Singapore for three years. She was a divorcee with an 8-year old son, and our family grew fond of her quickly, as she took wonderful care of our son and apartment. Gradually, we started to notice her habits and attitude changing. She now had a boyfriend, and was shopping online, with small parcels arriving. Her attention to cleaning and cooking waned. By early April she had an engagement ring and was asking for weekends off. In late April 2018, she approached us visibly upset saying her brother had been in a scooter accident, damaged his leg and required surgery - she was the only one who could afford to pay for it. We lent her SGD$1000 with the condition she pay this back over a period of time. We made it clear early on that borrowing from loan sharks was not on. Over the following weeks her work ethic declined further, so we sat down with her one night to find out what was going on. She began crying and said her ex-husband hadn’t paid the bank repayments for their house and they were going to repossess it. I had no clue what was true. Around 7pm she went for a walk. At 8:15pm my phone rang - an unknown mobile number. I answered it and a man responded by yelling at me – I couldn’t understand him. Two minutes later he rang again, this time speaking in broken English. “Your helper owes me money – you pay or I kill you.”

I hung up, shocked. My phone rang almost immediately, though this time a different number. I declined the call, and the 10 more calls following. Then the WhatsApp messages started. Over the next 30 minutes I received over 30 messages from three different numbers, as well as 20 missed calls. I called the police to make a formal report, and then a mate who had been through a similar issue - their helper borrowed from a legitimate money lender, used their names as guarantor and then couldn’t repay it. My friend paid the debt and put their helper on a plane home. Next, the loan sharks sent a photo of my son , which could only have been taken by our helper. Worried for his safety I called the police again, to let them know we were now receiving personal threats. Our helper walked in the door. “What have you done?” I asked. She explained she borrowed $400 and $500 from two legitimate money lenders and now owed
them interest. “Why do they have a photo of our son?” I asked. “Sorry sir, they had asked me to come and pay during the day and I said I could not as I was looking after the boy. They said send a photo to prove it”. She did! The police arrived and were calm and professional. They encouraged me to send our helper home immediately, adding this had become a tragic cycle in the community; people borrow money, are unable to pay it back and recruit others to buy themselves more time. They told us to be prepared for the harassment to get worse over the coming days, and assured me they would have extra patrols in our area. By the third week the messages and calls slowed down to a couple a day, and by the sixth week stopped altogether. We still receive letters in our mailbox addressed from debt collectors that receive a big Return to Sender.”
LOAN SHARKS: WHAT TO DO
1
Don’t interact. You may receive multiple threats, mostly over the phone and WhatsApp, and they could be sent from other countries. Do not respond or interact with loan sharks. give them any personal information. Block all numbers and contact police immediately.
62-63_LifeAndCulture_Oct2018.indd 63
2
Unfortunately you may have to let your helper go. On the night this happened the kids were asleep and when they woke up the next day our helper was gone. This was hard for both our helper and my son as they were close. Book their flight (for us a ferry to Batam) and recover their EP.
3
Don’t pay. If you pay they will see you as an easy target and come back for more and more. In our case we had up to six different numbers demanding amounts from $500 to $3000. Some sent my photo (which they had from my WhatsApp profile) with messages of RIP.
4
Inform your neighbours and schools to keep an eye out. We live in a condo with security, and staff did extra patrols around the grounds and streets. During this time we still received two threatening messages in our mail box. A neighbour also received a threatening call on his land line, saying he would need to pay the debt for us. I’d never met the guy before, but he was very
supportive. I informed our kids’ school and they assured us they would be safe on the premises. By being open and transparent about the issue our community were wonderful.
5
6
Change your phone numbers. My wife and I dreaded doing this due to our whole lives being connected to our phones, but it was vital. When hiring a new helper, encourage honesty and educate them on illegal moneylenders.
Be smart and stay safe. Singapore is an incredibly safe place but we started locking our doors from that night on. We re-educated to our new life and culture the kids column. This is where we’ll take on stranger a look at life in Singapore, from danger.

NETBALL
NEW INITIATIVES Michelle Adamson tells us what’s in store for ANZA Netball this season.
Accelerator Series ANZA Netball will be trialing exciting new initiatives during the 2018/2019 season which commenced on 1 September. “Our netball teams will continue to participate in the available leagues, friendlies and other tournaments that are on offer but we will be hosting a new tournament, the ANZA Accelerator Series,” says Michelle. “This series is specifically aimed at non-league players, and players who may not be getting as much exposure to competition with other clubs. It is
expected to be in a lightening round format over a five-week period. We’re also looking to host an ANZA Netball Carnival over two weekends early in 2019.”
Midweek training Mid-week training for some age groups will be introduced in the 2018/2019 season. “ANZA Netball will also look to continue and possibly extend the off season programme as it was such a success this year,” reveals Michelle. “More details will be provided to players as they are available but this season is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever before!” Join up now!

ATHLETICS
BRINGING FAMILIES TOGETHER Longstanding ANZA Athletics members, The ALLEN FAMILY, talk to LUCY JAMES about their memories of eight years with the club.
I love seeing my friends from different schools and having loads of fun whilst improving fitness and ability in track and field. My favourite event is discus and the 200m. - GRACIE (U13S)

How long have you been coming to ANZA Athletics? This season with be our 8th as my daughter Gracie started in the U6’s and is now in the U13’s.

Why do you join up each season? We really enjoy ANZA Athletics as it’s the only activity that all three kids can do at the same time. It’s a great snap shot exposure for the kids to all aspects of track and field and the atmosphere is friendly, fun and inclusive. Lots of camaraderie is shown by the kids – as they encourage their fellow age group participants and all other kids competing. It has a really nice vibe. What changes have you seen with ANZA Athletics? We have certainly seen our fair share of athletics tracks around the little red dot over the years, and are now thrilled to call the Toa Payoh Stadium home for this season. ANZA Athletics was initially predominantly made up of children from AIS. But meets now include a large variety of kids from international and local schools. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to make friends outside of their normal school comfort zone Kerry, you’re on the committee also – why do you volunteer? I resisted joining the committee for some
years, as I felt I could not dedicate enough time to the role. However earlier last season I joined quite by accident having offered to help out with some data input. The following week I was in the infamous blue committee top and the rest is history! It’s a great committee made up of various nationalities. We have children in different schools, so we are able to bring a variety of things to the table. It’s also great to have a mixture of mums and dads. We are also a very social group, so it makes all committee gatherings a lot of fun. Having been at ANZA Athletics for so long I felt it was time to give back to the ANZA community. What do your kids enjoy most about Friday night races? The kids really enjoy participating in the various events and trying to improve on their previous week’s effort. There is always healthy competition in the car on the way home to see who has achieved the most PB’s (Personal Bests) each meet. They also enjoy catching up with friends they don’t see at school. What would you say to someone considering joining? I would encourage them to come for a trial. It’s a great new location and the new starting time has made a difference. I think the fact that we are back for our 8th season is proof enough it’s worthwhile!

CYCLING
BEHIND THE SCENES: PHUKET TRAINING CAMP Twenty ANZA Cycling members, partners and families attended an intense cycling training weekend in Phuket, held at super sports facility Thanyapura. Newcomer TANIA MURPHY attended with husband Glenn and she tells all about the experience…
“O

ur training weekend didn’t start off well. Somewhat hungover, Glenn only remembered to take out the bike, but not the luggage, from our Grab taxi – and the trip hashtag was born; #LostandFound. All was saved by the nice driver who returned promptly with our bags, and a quick breakfast at Changi calmed the nerves. Being a new rider with only a few months experience with ANZA Cycling, apprehension started to set in. I was quietly stressing about keeping up with everyone and not wanting to be a liability with my inexperience. Reassurances from the lovely ANZA crew did little to dissipate my anxiety. Our pre-arranged taxi from Thanyapura greeted us upon arrival in Phuket and off we went in a flurry of introductions. Months of talk and planning was finally coming to fruition and everyone was excited. An impromptu ride was quickly organised and on our arrival day we took an easy 23km spin to scope out the neighbourhood. The coffee ritual followed us from Singapore, as the riders re-grouped at the café, which served excellent brew and fresh smoothies. We ended up spending most of our group time in this café! Nine of us attended a swim session at 4pm in the lap pool, with the session split up between proficient swimmers, and people who needed help with technique. We ended the session with a fun 50m race from the starting blocks. 16-year-old

Noah won by a full body length, followed by the old farts who thrashed their way to the finish. Then Glenn left all his swimming gear by the pool… #LostandFound. The training plan for the following day was announced: a 70km ride, followed by a 5km run on the track, with an early 7am roll out. For those who were after extra work, a 4pm swim session in the lap pool was also on offer. The group was free to join all, part of it, or none of it, at their own discretion. Donning my ANZA kit, I tried to portray a calm exterior. If only the other cyclists could see what my heart rate was! The ride consisted of a 10km cycle out to the main road, two loops of 30km, and moderate rolling hills, which were thankfully not too grim. We passed quiet villages, harmless free roaming chickens and dogs, and saw little traffic. The ride was shaded and lacked the Singapore humidity, making it a pleasant warm up for us all. Several riders proceeded to do the run, which many found tougher in the mid-day heat than the ride itself. Then Glenn left his bike and cleats by the lobby, unlocked… #LostandFound. The biggest contention of the trip followed, which we dubbed: “Lasagne-gate”. The limited edition, super-cheesy lasagne from
the café was the crowd favourite after a tough morning workout, but it ran out by noon! So the race to order the lasagne first was on! In addition to the training sessions organised by ANZA, Thanyapura ran a selection of complimentary classes which included Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and Spin classes. The sports facilities offered in the complex were comprehensive, and we were spoiled for choice. Leisure facilities were also available, with table tennis, a pool table and a leisure pool, which many of us took advantage of. The longest ride of the trip followed on Saturday morning with an ambitious plan of 90km in the hills of Phuket. Unfortunately, mechanical faults plagued the group for the first 20km of the route. The ride re-grouped at a little coffee shop mid-ride for a cuppa and continued on to the toughest section. Through the heat and perspiration, there were moments where we were rewarded with majestic views of the coast, including ‘James Bond Island’, a famous landmark in Phang Nga Bay. A couple of brave souls, Adam and Gordon, conquered the difficult King of Mountain section and lived to tell the tale. For riders not keen on the longer distance, another ride was organised through Thanyapura with 5km loops. Overall, the group did 6-7 loops, encountering snakes and chickens crossing the road during the ride. This same ride was then done by the main ANZA crew on Sunday morning before our flights back to Singapore. As I sat at the café with my coffee after my last ride, I gazed across the pool and lush greenery, a light breeze blowing. I reflected on what I had accomplished in just a few days and I’ve never felt more content. Many memories and laughter were shared over the long weekend, and I’m so happy I was a part of it.”

ANZA SOCCER FIRES UP ANITA NEVILLE reveals what’s in store for the 2018-2019 ANZA Soccer season
A
nd just like that the soccer season is well underway! “ANZA Soccer kicked off its 2018-2019 season on 25 August welcoming 800 kids - past players and new recruits alike - to our Saturday league and Sunday competition teams,” says Anita Neville. “The season is lining up to be one of the best ever,” enthuses Neville. “So if you, or your kids, are sitting on the couch about what sport to play it’s never too late to sign up and join one of Singapore’s largest, and friendliest, soccer clubs.” Here are just some of the exciting developments at ANZA Soccer…
MORE MATILDAS THAN EVER BEFORE ANZA Soccer has been investing in girls’ football over the past few years. “This year we are delighted to see so many girls joining the sport and our club,” says Neville. “For the first time we have a dedicated U14s Matildas team, along with a dedicated Matilda’s coach.”
ANZA HOSTS SEA CUP IN 2019
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
“The SEA Cup is a prestigious regional soccer tournament for junior youth in South-East Asia,” says Neville. “Originally founded in 1988, the SEA Cup is contested between four youth soccer leagues in the region: ANZA Soccer (Singapore), Kuala Lumpur Youth Soccer (Malaysia), Bangkok Soccer League (Thailand) and a local guest team. The competition takes place over a weekend sometime between February and April. If you are interested in volunteering at the event, get in touch with the ANZA office.”

There is plenty of room for little kickers at ANZA Soccer. “The U4 boys and girls programme involves fun games and activities designed to develop children’s confidence, motor skills and love for soccer,” says Neville. “We focus on positive encouragement and inclusion. The programme involves 30 one hour sessions on Saturday mornings.”
SATURDAY LEAGUE CLUB After a very closely fought 2017-2018 season expect another competitive Saturday League. “Players across the age divisions not only learn skills and fair play, they compete to take home the league trophy for their age group,” says Neville. “Towards the end of the season the ANZA Cup games kick off.” Saturday games are coached by volunteer parent coaches. Older age groups games are professionally refereed. “Players also receive 15 professional training sessions on Thursday evenings throughout the season,” says Neville. “The end of year finals are a family highlight.”
SUNDAY AND REGIONAL COMPETITIONS “We have high hopes for the ANZA Soccer competition teams this year,” says Neville. “The teams represent ANZA Soccer in external leagues, playing every second Sunday. Through the year ANZA also sends representative teams to competitions across the region, for both boys and girls.” ANZA Soccer provides the perfect entry to the world’s most popular game. “We offer coaching programmes (for parent coaches, as well as players) and fun, fierce yet friendly competition. We aim to teach young players the skills of the game, and how to be a great team player based on the values of Fair Play.”

HART TAN GET CAMERA READY FOR THE ANZA MELBOURNE CUP RACE DAY NEXT MONTH WITH TIPS FROM OUR OFFICIAL EVENT PHOTOGRAPHER, HART TAN, OF TOMATO PHOTO.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST PICK UP A CAMERA? I come from very poor family who couldn’t afford the bare essentials when I was young. I was only able to afford my first camera during my uni days, using money I earnt from working part time. FAVOURITE TIME OF THE DAY TO SHOOT? The best time of the day for a photoshoot depends a lot on the children. Young children tend to prefer morning, say 8am, a six month old tends to be best after their first nap, about 11am-1pm, and a teenager tends to prefer late afternoon. CAREER HIGHLIGHT? After 10 years in photography, I’ve won and been nominated for many awards, but the biggest highlight is the look on my clients faces when I turn up at their home with a small Sony A7 + 55mm lens; only to realise they judged my ability too soon with the size of my camera! I shoot 95 percent of my work with one camera and one 55mm fixed lens. TIPS AND TRICKS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING KIDS AND BABIES? The best tips I can offer is, be someone who kids love to be with. Our technical skill isn’t something that makes or breaks the shoot. It’s our behaviour and how we connect with our subject that matters the most. To capture laughter, you need to know how to make people laugh, to capture family connection; you need to know how to guide people to get there. Master level technical ability is just a basic requirement as a photographer.

ANY TIPS FOR PARENTS WANTING TO CAPTURE SPECIAL MOMENTS IN PHOTOS? Shoot often, but from time-to-time, hire someone who understands people and photography, so you can also be included in the photos. You don’t have pictures for yourself, but it is about having them for your children. TIPS FOR ORGANISATION OF PHOTOS IN THE DIGITAL AGE? I always have important shots in my life printed in the highest possible quality products such as Fine Art Canvas or Fine Art Prints in archival quality frames. Digital images are expensive to keep, so we spend tens of thousands every year to triple store images that we create for clients. Not many people do what we do,
but if memories are something important to you, you will take the highest measures to protect them. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PROFESSIONAL FAMILY SHOT? Different professionals operate differently, but our focus is making it easy for the family. Many people don’t like to be in front of the camera, don’t know how to pose, hate the “fake smile” and overly posed picture. We simplify it for them so they come in and out with a smile on their face. TIPS FOR ANZA MEMBERS WANTING TO GET GREAT SHOTS AT THE MELBOURNE CUP? Have a couple of glasses of champagne, enjoy yourself and let me handle it!
Favourite photography destination in the world? I have not finished exploring the world, however, I love Bhutan and Peru so far… love the people, culture, nature… just about everything about these two countries. Favourite photo of all time? I would have to say pictures of my children jumping in a puddle of water during a rainy day. It’s hung on my studio wall, and every client who walks past loves it too. Favourite word or trick you use to get people to smile? Tell them don’t smile… seriously… don’t smile. www.tomato.sg • www.facebook.com/tomato.sg
