E DI TOR’S NOTE
WELCOME “It takes a village to make a magazine, and I have an incredible group of people who work behind the scenes to bring these pages together.”
‘W
here are you spending Christmas?’ It’s the question on most expat’s lips during the silly season. Last year, my family had a non-traditional day screaming down waterslides at WaterBom, Bali. This year, we forked over a ridiculous amount of money for extortionist peak airfares back home to Australia (money well spent, of course!). We’ll celebrate Christmas with my family in Melbourne, then head to Sydney’s Central Coast for some beach time with my husband’s clan. It’s been a huge year of words and editing for me, so I’ll be shutting down my laptop, downloading some Netflix, and hoping to rest and recharge. As the year closes out, I’d like to thank everyone who helps to make the ANZA Mag such a great read. It takes a village to make a magazine, and I have an incredible group of people who work behind the scenes to bring these pages together. Special thanks to our hardworking regular columnists, freelancers and sports reporters; the photographers who cover our events; my designer, Christina, who delivers beautiful layouts every month; and Kerry and Geoff, who proofread and catch my typos (well, most of them!).

The best example of how our community can come together to create something special is this month’s beautiful cover. It was shot by Raf Dalmau, and styled by Juliet Harper – ANZA volunteers who make the magazine shine. The models are ANZA members, told to turn up in a ‘touch of red’, and the food was donated by our friends at Baker & Cook and The Fishwives. The result is so beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with in 2020! Pip Harry, Editor editor@anza.org.sg

ecember.... this year has raced by! As the end of 2019 rolls in and we get excited about the fun and festivities ahead, it’s also a time to reflect back on the year gone by. My last few Christmases have certainly been quite different and this year will definitely trend in the same direction. In 2017, Jo and I were in Brisbane basking in the happiness of just being married after a gorgeous wedding in Uluwatu, Bali with family and friends. Last year, we spent our second Christmas together as a married couple in Singapore, awaiting the birth of our beautiful little baby boy Ashleigh - born on 1 February this year. For Christmas this year, after a little holiday in Bali where we will revisit our wedding villa to reminisce about our journey over the last few years, we will be travelling to Brisbane to spend Christmas with our family, this time with Ashleigh accompanying us. This will be Ashleigh’s first Christmas and his first trip to Australia. We are bursting with excitement for the festive season ahead and are looking forward to reflecting on a tremendous few years for Jo and me personally. The ANZA community has also had a massive year. As always, our volunteer work has been central to what we are able to achieve and this year has certainly been no different. Thank you to all of you who have volunteered your time and effort to make our ANZA community great. Our sports groups continue to grow and our social opportunities have as well with a number of diverse events held with enthusiastic participation. We’ve had some awesome events this year including our Great Australia Day BBQ, our SuperBall and Melbourne Cup. These flagship events are brilliant, thanks to the ANZA team consistently delivering exceptional quality. The support they provide to our charity partners is humbling. Again, an enormous thank you to all our volunteers and staff for another superb year, the success of which comes down to their outstanding contribution and efforts. And a massive thank you to all ANZA members for your support and contribution to our community. Have a great Christmas and New Year, wherever you are in this beautiful world of ours. See you in 2020! Cheers,

Why is Treasury Wine Estates a great fit for ANZA? Treasury Wine Estates is the leading wine company in Singapore with a portfolio of premium wines from Australia and New Zealand, including Penfolds, Wolf Blass and Matua. We’ve been in Singapore for over 20 years, helping to bring our treasured wines to the Australian and New Zealand expat community and beyond. What do you offer expats in Singapore? A taste of home! What’s your favourite ANZA event? My favourite is the Celebrating ANZA event which recognises all the fantastic work that ANZA is doing in the community. What does ANZA mean to you personally? Community focused; a great group of people to meet and connect with (over a glass of wine!). What’s your one tip for newcomers to Singapore? Get exploring! While Singapore might seem like a small place, there is a lot to discover. We’ve been here over four years, and still have so much to see and do… including the never ending scene of new restaurants and bars popping up!
DID YOU KNOW? St. Margaret’s School is the oldest Christian school in Singapore, founded in 1842 by a British female missionary. Today, it’s still highly regarded for both primary and secondary education for girls. – Raelene Tan

10 FACTS ABOUT CATS
1
CATS is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It premiered at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances.
2
The catchy musical score, composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, published in 1939. It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles.
5
The show is performed entirely in song.
6
CATS has toured to more than 30 countries, been performed in 15 languages, and has been seen by more than 81 million people worldwide.
7
The musical has been the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

9
Coming in just behind The Lion King, CATS is the fourth longestrunning Broadway show. The original Broadway production used yak hair for the feline’s luxurious wigs … more than 1300 kilos of it! 10 anza
Whats On Dec19.indd 10
The entire set is made to appear two to three times larger than the feline performers. On 26 December, a much-anticipated film adaptation of the musical will hit theatres starring James
Corden as Bustopher Jones, Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger, Idris Elba as Macavity, Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella, Ian McKellen as Gus the Theatre Cat, Taylor Swift as Bombalurina, and Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots. Early public reactions to the movie trailer, and special effects have been mixed.
10
Memory, sung onstage by Grizabella, is one of the show’s most popular tunes, and it’s been recorded by more than 150 artists, including Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Susan Boyle, Liberace, and Barry Manilow.

e kicked off 2019 with a fabulous Australia Day celebration at Clifford Pier, promoting Australian food, wine and culture to 900 guests, including our Singapore friends. Australia’s science and innovation capability remained a key priority. We partnered with CSIRO, Australian universities and innovative companies to host an ‘Australian Pavilion’ at Innovfest Unbound 2019 during Singapore’s Smart Nation Week. We presented an all-women expert panel with Westpac on artificial intelligence (AI). We welcomed Australia’s Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, the Hon Karen Andrews MP, who addressed thousands of technology professionals at Innovfest and witnessed a MoU signing between CSIRO, SG Innovate and Austrade to increase deep tech collaboration. Our Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Tanya Monro, met with the local defence science community and we co-hosted a ‘Women in Cyber’ discussion panel with the Canadian Embassy during Singapore’s International Cyber Week. In November, we partnered with Asian Scientist Magazine to present a discussion panel of scientists to celebrate one year since

our Good Science = Great Business 2018 Festival. In June, we welcomed Prime Minister Scott Morrison MP to Singapore, together with Foreign Minister and Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Marise Payne and Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham. Prime Minister Morrison and his ministerial colleagues met with Prime Minister Lee and his colleagues and the Australian and Singapore business community, as well as announcing closer Australia-Singapore collaboration on the digital economy. This kicked off exciting work toward an Australia-Singapore Digital Economy Agreement. In October, we shared more details about opportunities presented by this agreement during the IMDA’s SG:Digital Industry Day. Also in June, our Regional Built Environment Forum 2019 brought together Australian, Singaporean, regional and international built environment companies, business leaders, experts, decision-makers and officials. The Forum promoted Australia’s and Singapore’s built environment capabilities and explored how our
countries can jointly support ASEAN’s unfolding urbanisation story. We supported several Australian film screenings, including ‘Storm Boy’ in January, ‘Top End Wedding’ during NAIDOC Week, and eco-documentary, ‘BLUE’, for Australia Now ASEAN 2019. MasterChef’s Audra Morrice dished up a cooking masterclass to 50 Temasek Culinary Academy students. In August, High Commissioner Bruce Gosper hosted a special evening with the Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy at his Residence with esteemed Singaporean alumni of Australian universities. Guests heard from ‘Keeper of the Cup’, Joe McGrath, and legendary racehorse trainer and five-time Melbourne Cup winner, Lee Freedman. Throughout the year, as Australia’s seasons changed, we showcased Australian poetry through a social media campaign supported by Australian New Colombo Plan scholars living and studying in our region. We look forward to an even brighter year in 2020 promoting Australia to Singapore and the region and further strengthening our great friendship with Singapore.
A Christmas message from the High Commissioner From my family to you and yours, I wish everyone a happy, healthy, safe and merry Christmas and enjoyable and prosperous start to 2020. EP ROADSHOW NZ
In September, High Commissioner Jo Tyndall and Trade Commissioner Hayley Horan spent a week in New Zealand, speaking to business audiences about the EP in Christchurch, Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland. Wellington's session was part of a FinTech conference and began with a keynote address by Minister for Trade and Export Growth, Hon David Parker. This concluded with a special EP launch reception at Te Papa, co-hosted by the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore High Commission in Wellington.
EP CHAMBER BRIEFING
High Commissioner Tyndall hosted a briefing session for those interested in learning more about the EP here in Singapore. It was especially heartening to see strong support for greater collaboration between arts and culture agencies – a sector that really helps foster the all-important people-topeople ties between our countries.
A joint research collaboration on data science, intended to support and encourage the development and exchange of scientific strengths and capabilities within each country, is being developed by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and Data Science Consortium (DSC). MBIE sent 12 researchers to participate in a workshop in Singapore held on 30-31 October.
TE PAPA AND THE NATIONAL HERITAGE BOARD
In October, Ian Crowe, Director of Museum and Commercial Services at Te Papa, and Chung May Khuen, Director of the National Museum of Singapore, signed a Memorandum of Arrangement (MoA) under the EP. This MoA will see both museums forging a long-term, collaborative relationship in the areas of capability development and staff exchanges, exhibition and loan exchanges, as well as research and innovation.

HOLLY’S DOLLIES! SUZANNA POMEROY talks to ANZA member HOLLY REIDY about how she’s making dolls to support young people with cancer.
Tell us about yourself? My name is Holly Reidy and I’m 12 years old. I’m in Year Seven at GEMS World Academy and I play a lot of sports, including ANZA Netball.
Why did you to want to help children with cancer? Reading Australian cricketer Brad Haddin’s autobiography My Family’s Keeper inspired me to help children with cancer. Brad’s daughter Mia had a type of cancer called Neuroblastoma. In one part of the book, Brad talks how grateful his daughter was when a teenage cancer survivor visited the ward and gave all of the children presents. I thought that making dolls might be a small way I could let children with cancer know that people are thinking about them while they are going through their treatment.
How did you get the idea for the dolls to help children undergoing chemotherapy? I got a sewing machine for my 6th birthday, and since then, I’ve made all sorts of things with it. I use Dolls and Daydreams patterns for nearly all of my dolls. A few years ago, I was looking at all of their patterns and saw the Cuties for a Cure - dolls designed for children 16 anza

undergoing chemotherapy who have experienced hair loss. The dolls come with a face mask and a hat, cap, bandana, or headband. I decided to start researching some charities who might be interested.
How do you feel about distributing your dolls to children in Ronald McDonald House? I’m proud that my project has been successful and very happy that I can give them to children at Ronald McDonald House. As part of the Happy Wheels Cart Christmas program, I’ll go around with the volunteers and give out the dolls personally.
How do you fit it in with all your school work and other activities? It can be difficult to find time to make the dolls! I took advantage of the half term break and got a lot done then. My first doll took about four hours, now I can make them in a bit less than two hours and I’m getting quicker every time. It’s very satisfying to see each finished doll. Once I get started, I just keep going until it’s finished!
Would you like to tell us anything else about this experience?
I thought that making dolls might be a small way I could let children with cancer know that people are thinking about them while they are going through their treatment. - HOLLY REIDY
children undergoing chemotherapy with comfort and support. I am so lucky to be given this opportunity. I hope I’m able to put a smile on their face! The initiative is so popular that it’s going to expand into other hospitals. If you would like to be a Happy Wheels volunteer please contact anzaaction@anza.org.sg

ANZA TOURS 2019 HIGHLIGHTS 20 anza
Tours Dec19.indd 20
What an amazing year ANZA TOURS has had, exploring Singapore and all its rich culture and diversity. The committee looks back at some of the highlights…
T
his year the ANZA Tours Committee added three new volunteers and a new guide to our line-up. With increased enthusiasm we set out to showcase the diversity of Singapore’s sights, sounds and experiences, with the aim of connecting ANZA members to their community. We created a mixture of experiences in arts, history, nature, architecture and food culture, offering niche tours to interest and excite the newcomer and the long timer alike. This year, we discovered the traditions and customs around Chinese New Year, Thaipusam, the Hungry Ghost Festival, and Deepavali. We appreciated the architecture of Singapore around Marina Bay, learnt about the history of Black and White houses, and gained an understanding of the two buildings that were amalgamated to create the new National Gallery. We celebrated ANZAC Day as a group, explored the last kampong, Tiong Bahru, Waterloo Street and Wessex Estate. We ate our way through a Fullerton Hotel morning tea, appreciated dim sum, and sampled an Indian feast. We printed Peranakan tiles and bound bespoke books. One tour verged on being explosive when, after finishing up in Geylang, we came upon a commotion surrounding an unexploded World War II bomb. Never a dull moment on ANZA Tours, with value added extras! It’s been a fantastic year making friends, laughing and engaging with beautiful and diverse Singapore. Come and join us in 2020 for another amazing line-up of adventures.

The Magic of Thaipusam
Enjoy the atmosphere of the Thaipusam Hindu festival in one of the only places in the world to continue this tradition. See devotees entering a trance to have their bodies pierced by metal spikes and hooks. A colourful procession then takes place with participants carrying richly decorated ‘kavadis’ on a barefoot, 4km walk between temples. We take a bus! Our guide Charlotte will explain the legends and rituals of Thaipusam. At the end of the procession devotees take out the spikes without a drop of blood. A truly magical experience, not to be missed.
A docent at the Singapore Art Museum will guide us through this international exhibit, which takes place every two years in Singapore. Explore over 70 artists from South East Asia and beyond, with newly commissioned contemporary works. This Biennale edition will feature artists from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Myanmar, France and America. Afterwards, join your new friends with a lunch on the rooftop at Aura Sky Lounge.
DATE: Saturday 29 February TIME: 9:20am -11:30am MEETING POINT: Nicoll Highway MRT Exit A. NOTE: Finishing at the Parkview Square 600 Northbridge Rd (next to Bugis MRT). COST: Member $20, child $10, non-member $25
Gather friends and family for a fun, adventure-filled exploration of Kampong Glam. While following clues, learn interesting facts about one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods. Discover hidden gems, amazing cafes, bars and unique shops. From a trading and religious port to a bustling art and culture precinct, Kampong Glam has it all. This tour will lead you through the homes of Sea Gypsies, past spice gardens, parks, galleries, cafes and more, in a game of clues. Unlock the stories of Kampong Glam while you solve riddles along the way.

he Race That Stops a Nation returned to Singapore on Tuesday 5 November when a spirited crowd of over 400 joined in the festivities at The Singapore Turf Club to see Vow and Declare nose past the winner’s post in a thrilling finish. All the buzz of Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse was recreated in a beautifully decorated room, overlooking the lush green racecourse. Guests placed live bets on the races, with big screens beaming all the action. A charity prize draw with incredible holiday giveaways raised money for Riding for the Disabled, Singapore, and the upkeep of ANZA Action sponsored therapy pony, Kodie. We were thrilled to reach our fundraising target this year, keeping Kodie in action for 2020. It was a day of wins with the CurrencyFair Spin the Travel Wheel sending guests off to luxurious holidays around South East Asia, ArtWorks gifting one lucky guest an eye-catching artwork, and QV leaving surprise skincare packs under each table. Of course, The Cup is all about fun photo opps, and the ArtWorks photo booth had plenty of posers taking away their happy snaps as mementos of the day. There’s nothing better than a simple, stress-free Christmas catch up with your crew. Stylist JULIET HARPER throws a festive party with some ANZA friends, with minimal prep and cooking time. Here’s her simple recipe for a cracking good time…
Prior Prep
Plan your menu so everything is prepared prior to people arriving. Alternate hot and cold courses to avoid competition with the oven. Make use of the specialty stores in Singapore who have already seasoned or baked their products.

ENTRÉE AND MAIN
Rebecca and her team had a busy week opening their brand-new Butcher’s counter at The Fishwives, Cluny Court but that didn’t stop them getting involved in our Christmas lunch! Our baked salmon and roast chicken feast was made possible by the generous provision of a range of fresh, sustainable food: Organic Hormone and Antibiotic Lacto chicken, Malaysian bred but certified organic chicken under the British system. Don’t be afraid to ask the Butchers exactly how you like your meat prepared. They are incredibly accommodating! New Zealand Akaroa South Island King Salmon from Lucas Bay in the Akaroa Harbour, a natural environment and home of a wild salmon population. Charleston Jersey Brie (600g) and Monet Flowers Goat Cheese from Woodside Cheese Wrights, South Australia. The focus on taste and presentation is so impeccable that they even provide a small vial of pouring honey. Fig, Walnut and Almond Sweet Bread by Kris Lloyd Artisan Cheese, Australia.

REBECCA FOREMAN explores Croatia on a family driving tour; exploring mountainous landscapes, world heritage sites, and dramatic coastlines.
M
y husband and I have always wanted to visit Croatia and as soon as the opportunity arose, we decided to take the plunge with an ambitious family holiday. Travelling direct from Singapore to London Heathrow, then onto Zagreb, I felt a heightened sense of excitement as we embarked on a two-week exploration of the country my grandmother hails from.
COSMOPOLITAN ZAGREB The capital Zagreb surprised me with its laid back, yet cosmopolitan feel. It helped that we hit the jackpot 44 anza

with our accommodation choice – ‘Apartment Penelope’ (booking.com/ hotel/hr/apartment-penelope) which was charming, fully decked out and walking distance from Ban Jelačić Square, a hot spot for families. There are plenty of options to keep the kids busy in Zagreb. We visited the mind-bending Museum of Illusions (muzejiluzija.com/en/naslovna) an attraction featuring various optical illusion exhibits, Nikola Tesla Museum, dedicated to honouring the life and work of the pioneering electrical engineer, and the Contemporary Art Museum. My favourite was the Museum of

Broken Relationships, (brokenships.com) accessed by one of the world’s shortest public transport funiculars, towards the colourfully tiled St Mark’s Church in St Mark’s Square. The museum is filled with personal objects and stories donated from deceased relationships. I found a recent message in the guest book from Ru Paul of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. We decided to navigate our adventure by car, as my husband had a hankering for a driving holiday in a twin turbo engine. This was fine with me as it gave me the chance to view some of the most stunning coastal views on our drive north toward Pula. Along the cliff hugging roads, nestled against the icy blue Adriatic Sea, you could be forgiven for thinking you were on the Amalfi coastline.
Roman amphitheater arena, Pula.
PULA
Pula, a seafront city on the tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, is known for its beachlined coast and Roman ruins, in particular the well preserved Roman Ampitheatre, located in the heart of the city (pulainfo. hr/where/arena-amphitheater-2) The ruin dominates the streetscape and doubles as a venue for concerts and festivals, with a crowd capacity of 5000. You can even watch a gladiatorial spectacle, complete with costumes, sword fighting and fire eating jesters. Every week during the summer months, the Arena hosts gladiator fights as part of the historical and entertainment spectacle “Spectacvla Antiqva”. Another must visit is the stunning old town of Rovinj, north of Pula, for its picturesque views and cobbled streets lined with shops and elaborate ice creameries on every corner.
ZADAR
Lesser known and highly underrated is the city of Zadar, on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. It could be Split’s younger brother, boasting a more compact old town, with modern influences. See where medieval troublemakers were long ago tied up and mocked at the Pillar of Shame, in the town centre. Then take a short walk to the whimsical Sea Organ and The Greeting to the Sun solar exhibit turned light show at night; stunning pieces of installation art along the sea edge. Alfred Hitchcock once said the sunset at Zadar is one of the most beautiful in the world and I wouldn’t dispute this, but for a truly memorable experience I recommend taking a swim in the sea next December 2019 anza

to the tuneful whistles of the Sea Organ early in the morning. The system of pipes and whistles react to the movement of the sea, creating otherworldly noises. It’s heavenly.
PLITVICE LAKES
For nature lovers, Plitviče Lakes National Park (np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/en) is a forest reserve in central Croatia. It’s famous for 16 terraced lakes, joined by waterfalls, that extend into a limestone canyon. We booked independently but you need to nab tickets online a couple of days prior in high season to avoid disappointment. You can choose from several walking trails, but the best kiddie trekking options are Trails A or B, followed by lunch at one of the two entrance restaurants. This was a thoroughly enjoyable day, set amongst some of the most vivid turquoise coloured lakes you’re ever likely to snap.
SPLIT
From Plitvice we ventured south to the lively town of Split. Renowned for its beaches, party town persona and the fortress-like complex, Diocletian’s Palace in the Old Town. You’ll inevitably find queues to climb the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world, the Bell Tower of St Domnius, or rub the big toe of Gregory of Aqualand, Brač. Nin for good luck, as tourists pile in by bus and cruise-liner load. Even a simple stroll along the promenade can be bustling. But for an hour looking at something weird and wonderful, (turn away animal activists), check out ‘Froggyland’ for taxidermied frogs set into aerodynamic poses (froggyland.net).
BRAČ
We took a short car ferry to Brač, one of a thousand islands on the Dalmatian coast. We had read that the weirdly named ‘Zlatni Rat’ beach was voted one of the 10 best in Europe and it certainly didn’t disappoint for a few days of family entertainment. As we relaxed on sun loungers, the kids hit the huge inflatable playground ‘Aqualand’ (aquapark-bol.com) for hours of fun.

we were off to our final destination point, busy Dubrovnik. Known for being a popular set for Star Wars and Game of Thrones it’s also regarded for its distinctive UNESCO Fortress City, encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century. Its buildings range from baroque St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and history museum, Gothic Rector’s Palace. Paved with limestone, the pedestrianised Stradun is lined with everything touristy. For the best city views, we caught the cable car up to the top of the mountain and took some incredible photos of the Old Town and
The shoulder season (May/June and September/October are ideal months to visit Croatia - the weather is pleasant and there are less crowds. Zadar and Zagreb will keep the kids happy with museums, art installations, and ice-creameries. They’re much less crowded than Split and Dubrovnik. Use the car ferries, they cut out dual lane highways and get you to where you need to go without braving holiday traffic conditions. fter his casual bistro CHEEK picked up a coveted Michelin star, Chef Rishi Naleendra’s newest venture, Cloudstreet, is also a hit out of the park. We visit the contemporary fine diner on hip Amoy Street on a quieter weekday for lunch, drawn by the buzz from its recent opening. Comfortable leather chairs at the wide chef’s counter are the perfect location for Rishi and his team to interact with us about the menu and wine pairings. We also get a front row seat to all the action from the plating section, watching the deft chefs work their magic on a series of thoughtful, carefully-presented dishes. Diners can choose from five or seven courses at dinner, (with a few special extra bites) and three or five courses during lunch. Keen to take our time and explore the menu, we opt for five courses, which begins with a smooth mussel mousse, served between crackers cleverly made to look like black shells. Next is a Grilled Oyster, drizzled with fresh coconut milk, betal leaf oil, and pearls of tart, pink finger lime. We nibble on a side plate of Singapore Stout and Liquorice Bread, a dense rye bun, glazed with molasses, spread with lashings of house-whipped French butter and salt. We move onto Sicilian Red Prawn, accompanied by salted tomato and olive oil, and a couple of delightful small bites – a ball of Beetroot and Smoked Goats Cheese, with a coating of puffed rice, and a dollop of Goats Milk, floating in fermented watermelon juice. The standout dishes use Sri Lankan flavours – the crunchy duck roti, and the Sri Lankan Curry of King Crab and Tamarind, served with a cup of aromatic coconut broth are both on point. Grilled Lamb, Young Jackfruit and Mint is a successful interpretation of Rishi’s Sri Lankan and Australian influences, while the final Vegemite on Toast petit four is a lovely nod to the land down under. Throughout the meal, Manuela Toniolo, Rishi’s delightful Australian wife and restaurant partner, offers insights into the drink’s menu – which includes 350 natural and classic style wines from around the world. Cloudstreet has a strong focus

on wine pairings, and we let Manuela guide us from tart sparklings to crisp whites, bold reds and a sweet finish – every glass the perfect match for Rishi’s incredible food. VERDICT: This showcase of thoughtful, expressive dishes blends the very best of Australian and Sri Lankan flavours, with creativity, flavour and flair. Service here is immaculate and the overall experience is something very special.
Cloudstreet is named after the 1991 novel by Australian writer Tim Winton, which chronicles the lives of two working-class families, the Pickles and the Lambs. It was the recipient of a Miles Franklin Award in 1992. Chef Rishi has a signed copy!

DRINK Junior’s alpine themed bar in Tanjong Pagar delivers Christmas cheer in a glass! Escape the tropical climate and knock back a festive cocktail or two.

very six months, pocket bar Junior switches things up with a different cocktail concept. Located down a lane in Tanjong Pagar, this teeny, tiny bar (it only houses about 15-20 guests comfortably) is currently bringing a taste of the European Alps to Singapore with the theme ‘Petite Chalet’. The ski lodge inspired bar pays tribute to the 1970s après ski scene, including vintage signage, skis and snowshoes. The cocktail menu is designed for climates colder than tropical Singapore, which makes the experience more fun. Thank goodness for air con!
Order up! Get into the festive spirit with a slew of alpine inspired cocktails (all priced at S$25++) complete with drinker ratings of green (gentle and easy), blue (a moderate challenge) and double back diamond (for experts only!).The menu is divided into four seasons - Spring, Summer, Winter, Autumn - with drinks showcasing an array of alpine liqueurs. We start with the Killer Queen, a bracing blend of gin, lemon, blueberry, rhubarb and elderflower, topped with gold stars for extra sparkle. The kitschy and refreshing Garden Gnome is a showstopper, served in a gnome’s head, mixed with tequila, absinthe, gentian, cucumber, and lime, garnished with mint
and dill. For a winter warmer, cosy up with the Sweater Weather, a cognac-based cocktail combining Pierre Ferrand 1840, dark rum, spiced pear, bianco vermouth, and honey. The Swiss Miss is the ultimate crowd pleaser, a hot chocolate concoction of Green Chartreuse, Swiss drinking chocolate, dark rum, whipped coconut cream, and torched cinnamon. Yummy.
What’s to eat? Pair your winter drinks with a menu of rib-sticking comfort dishes. We devour the soft, dense and satisfying house made Bavarian Pretzel (S$7++), served with a tangy, sweet onion mustard. Tartiflette (S$18++) is a traditional dish in the Alps made with scalloped potatoes, Brie and Gruyere cheese, lardons and onion – it’s impossibly moreish and gooey. There’s also the tasty Chicken Schnitzel (S$13++) accompanied with homemade spiced pear ketchup.

PUMPKIN TORTELLINI WITH HAZELNUT AND SAGE BEURRE NOISETTE This pumpkin tortellini recipe from Global Baker DEAN BRETTSCHNEIDER’S 16th book – COOK: Food to Share is a sure-fire crowd pleaser. Serves 8 INGREDIENTS:
1 portion pasta dough, rolled into 4 sheets (recipe: COOK) 1 egg, beaten 60g hazelnuts, roughly chopped Semolina flour, as needed A handful of Italian parsley, chopped
Filling :
450g pumpkin 150g ricotta or feta cheese 120g Parmesan cheese, grated 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg Olive oil, as needed Salt, to taste Ground black pepper, to taste
Sauce:
300g butter ½ lemon, juice extracted 6 sprigs sage, leaves picked
METHOD:
1. Prepare the filling a day ahead. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 3. Cut the pumpkin into medium-sized wedges and place in a roasting pan. Drizzle with olive oil and roast for 25 minutes, or until cooked and tender. Set aside to cool. Place the cooled pumpkin in a food processor and blend into a purée. Line a strainer with muslin cloth and place in a big bowl. Pour the pumpkin purée into the lined strainer. Bring the edges of the cloth up and tie tightly. Refrigerate overnight to drain. 4. The next day, unwrap the pumpkin purée and place in a bowl with the ricotta or feta cheese and Parmesan cheese. Add the ground nutmeg and mix well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon into a piping bag. 5. Spread a sheet of pasta out on a work surface lightly dusted with semolina flour. Cut out circles using an 8cm round cutter. Pipe 1 tbsp pumpkin mixture on one side of a circle, avoiding the edge. Brush some beaten egg around the edge and fold into a semi-circle. Pinch the edges to seal. Using your little finger, lightly press into the middle of the parcel and bring the two pointed edges

together around your finger. Pinch to join. 6. Set the tortellini aside on a clean surface with plenty of semolina flour so they don’t stick. Repeat for all the dough circles. Repeat for the remaining sheets of pasta. 7. Boil a large pot of lightly salted water and cook the tortellini for 3 minutes. Drain well and set aside. 8. Prepare the sauce: Place the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and cook for 3–5 minutes, or until the milk solids turn brown. Add the lime juice and sage leaves and fry lightly. Add the tortellini and mix gently. Serve topped with hazelnuts and Italian parsley.
“This is a recipe I hold close to my heart. When I was just 17, I learnt this dish from one of my mentors, Italian Chef Paolo Pancotti, in New Zealand. Now I’ve relocated to Singapore, I’m glad to include this all-time classic into COOK, as well as impart this recipe to my students at the Brettschneider’s Baking and Cooking School.” - Jenna White, Resident Pastry Chef & Development Chef at Baker & Cook and co-author of COOK.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SINGAPORE CITY ATTRACTIONS The noisier the celebraton the better just before midnight, to scare away bad spirits, allowing the New Year to enter unobstructed. Many festivities are held around Marina Bay. Hundreds of thousands of people pack the area to enjoy not only the fireworks, but also music and entertainment such as roving magicians and energetic stiltwalkers. A countdown-market in the city is an added attraction, from late afternoon, for browsing amongst arts and crafts as well as indulging in street eats. Creatively lit buildings add to the festive scene, with cameras and smiles working overtime. Clarke Quay, with its plethora of restaurants and bars, also joins in, with riverside street performers contributing to the mood.
ISLAND STYLE Over on Sentosa island, the longestablished Siloso Beach Party attracts revellers with well-known DJs, a giant foam pool and fireworks. Hotels, restaurants and entertainment centres do brisk business in the tropical evening with families and tourists alike, all wanting to be part of the New Year’s Eve action.
TRADITIONAL TREATS
Born in Adelaide, Raelene Tan is an etiquette consultant and a food and travel writer. She has authored five books and has been a regular guest on radio and television.
Whatever our tastebuds, there is something for everyone to enjoy as Singapore’s ethnic communities offer their customary treats at various venues, including heartland celebrations. Sweet delights, nuts and apples hold universal appeal for the year ahead to be filled with sweetness, fertility and good health. Fruit, vegetables, grains and meat, as well as seafood, represent the best of the harvest from land and sea. Familiar favourites of mince pies, fruit cake, Christmas biscuits, lamingtons, chocolates, dried fruit, salads, bread and cheese platters can be obtained fairly easily, along with chicken, prawns and
sausages to sizzle, all washed down with mulled wine, egg nog, apple cider, fruit punch and the necessary champagne. To add authenticity here in our homeaway-from-home, there are myriad auspicious dishes to be enjoyed, such as satay with ketupat (steamed rice cake wrapped in coconut leaves; a symbol of prosperity), beef rendang (dry-fried curry), nasi goreng (fried rice) and colourful kueh (cakes made with rice flour and coconut milk), as well as fish balls (for abundance and completeness), egg foo yong (with eggs representing new life), tim sum items including dumplings, and noodles for long life. Also, chicken curry, biryani (saffron rice with its attractive golden colour), popular sugee cake (made with semolina flour and ground almonds) and fragrant pineapple tarts for their connotation of sweetness and harmony.
WISHES As we sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at midnight on New Year’s Eve to usher out the old year and embrace the New Year, it is a good time to reflect and be thankful for the continuation of life. As we make the proverbial resolutions, may they include our wishes for peace, prosperity, happiness and good health. December 2019 anza

I
t’s Christmas time. If, like me, you have left gifts for your most important people to the last, you might be experiencing ‘high present alert’. I want to buy a present for my sefu or master. He is a Tao yogi, which means he drinks green tea, sleeps on tatami mats, and has two sets of clothes, both exactly the same. Literally, what on earth do you find as a gift for this kind of person? Should I buy something? Recycle something? I’ve got nothing left to recycle, having rid myself of most unnecessary material possessions (except my coffee cup collection). Could I create something? I envy those who are wise in arts and crafts, but I can barely thread a needle. Forget crocheting a replica of the Eight Immortals. In the spirit of aparigraha (not possessing), I don’t want to get caught by the marketing buzz from the global yoga apparel industry and I’d rather avoid buying that mat, class cards or yoga joke t-shirt. Are you in the same boat as I am, trying to work out what to get for that yogi of your life? In my search for that gift for my sefu, I found some others your adorable yogi might like. And they don’t cost a bomb, either. THE MINDFULNESS COLOURING IN BOOK – colouring in reduces the fear response in our brain, plus they are a load of fun. BOOKS - The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, The Prophet – by Kahlil Gibran and finally, The Promise by Mark Whitwell. Useful for the yogi who likes to a find the deeper meaning in life. PALO SANTO HOLY WOOD - great for clearing energy in a house that might be full of noise, or even fiery arguments.
Useful for post family Xmas dinner perhaps? TINGSHA CHIMES - these little hand chimes are great as a wake-up call if you need to wake someone up and you sense strong, almost steel-like resistance. MEDICINAL MUSHROOM LIKE CORDYCEPS OR CHAGA (MY FAVOURITE) - the super adaptogen allowing our earth element to balance. Might want to pick up extra for your self as prep for the silly season. It usually comes in powder form. Put it in your tea, and you won’t notice. Gifts that keep on giving are especially loved by yogis. Donate to an animal protection organisation – like the Orangutan Project, Soi Dogs Thailand or World Animal Protection (like Community Aid Abroad for animals). We are destroying this planet, not just for ourselves but for other sentient beings too. Pay it forward, it just might help the universal human karma on the day of reckoning. Finally, don’t buy gift wrapping. Use recycled paper. Or Santa sacks which you can use again and again. And know any gift idea with heart will always be loved by your dear yogi. There are also some seriously good vegan chocolates. In case you are dropping by the ANZA office - I really like these. Have a festive season, see you in 2020.

SOUL F UE L
MEANINGFUL GIFTS KIM FORRESTER shares tips for buying a Christmas gift that delivers true happiness.
I
Kim Forrester is a holistic wellbeing author, consultant and educator. kimforrester.net
t’s the reaction that all gift-givers dread: the brief pause; the forced smile; the polite “oh, you really shouldn’t have”. All signs that your carefully chosen gift has missed the mark. Buying a great Christmas gift for family and friends can be stressful and fraught with complications. How do you buy something meaningful, at a reasonable budget, that won’t eventually end up in your loved one’s regifting cupboard? Fortunately, there are simple ways to avoid the emotional (and financial) embarrassment of offering an unwanted gift. What we really want when we give a gift, is for the recipient to feel a boost of happiness. So, what often ends up happening is we buy gifts that would make us happy. Or we guess at what will bring someone enjoyment. Thankfully, researchers have a great idea of what makes people truly happy; what boosts our sense of wellbeing and makes us feel good about life. This means we can take the guesswork out of great gift-giving. For gifts that will brighten someone’s day and put the ‘happy’ back into the holidays, try these tips: GIFT AN EXPERIENCE: Studies are pretty clear about this – we are happiest when we spend money on experiences, rather than possessions. When you gift an experience, you are actually gifting a lifetime memory that won’t just boost happiness at the time of the experience, but also every time the recipient reflects back on that moment.
MAKE AN ON-BEHALF DONATION: When we are kind and generous to others, our brains reward us with a boost of wellbeing and joy. Letting someone know that you have donated to a worthy cause in their name is a great way to enhance happiness in the holidays. INSTIGATE A REUNION: Studies show that social connection is one of the most important elements of a long, happy life. Therefore, a great gift is one that reconnects the recipient with individuals they love. Depending on your budget, you can arrange a surprise reunion, or a dinner out for the recipient and their loved ones, or simply invite ‘surprise guests’ to your festive celebrations. GIVE SOMETHING HOME-MADE OR HEARTFELT: It’s impossible to overstate how important it is for us to feel that we belong; that we are seen and appreciated. It costs almost nothing to write a heart-felt letter of gratitude, or create a box full of reasons you adore someone. If you are going to give baked goods or holiday snacks, take the time to make these items yourself. This elevates these simple gifts into the realms of heartfelt human connection. Remember, too, to be gentle on yourself and fill up your own happiness stores. It can take courage, but by offering an overdue apology or extending forgiveness to someone, you can lift your mood and enjoy a truly happy Christmas. December 2019

M EET THE GROUPS
The ANZA Knitters Are you handy with a set of knitting needles or keen to learn? Join the ANZA Knitters, have a yarn, and get involved with charity projects.
WHO ARE THEY: “The Knit for Love programme was started by Ms Lyn Ee about six years ago at the Singapore Cancer Centre,” says ANZA Knitter organiser Virginia Soh. “She gathered a group to knit beanies for cancer patients going through their first chemotherapy treatment, to show that someone was thinking about them. This is where the ANZA Knitters group was formed.” WHERE DO THEY MEET: Every third Friday of the month at the ANZA office, 10am – 12 noon. WHO CAN JOIN THIS GROUP? You must be an ANZA member to join, and the group caters to all abilities. “We have a group of knitters with different abilities and some can crochet as well,” says Virginia. “We can also help beginners start their project.” WHY JOIN THIS GROUP? Apart from the beanies for cancer patients, the ANZA Knitters are also involved with Babes Pregnancy Crisis Support. “This charity helps young teenage girls during their pregnancy,” says Virginia. “We knit newborn beanies, mittens and booties to help them with their pregnancy journey and show them that someone is thinking of them. Last year we knitted about 100 beanies for the Cancer Society and about 40 newborn sets for Babes. BEST THING ABOUT THE GROUP? “The best thing is the many friendships we’ve formed that continue after leaving Singapore,” says Virgina. “We help those who are new to the country settle in and give them tips and advice. It’s about giving back to the community in a
small way. We share many stories of different projects we’ve done in the past, or how we learnt to knit from our mothers and grandmothers.” WHAT DOES A TYPICAL MEETING ENTAIL? “We meet at the ANZA office on Kampong Bahru Road and it’s all very casual. We help each other with the patterns and share tips. There are about 16 knitters in the group, and we use the patterns from the Cancer Society and the Babes sets or we use our own. Needles and wool can be bought from Spotlight at Plaza Singapura.” ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? “We’ve done one off projects in the past. One knitter did a couple of rugs for a raffle at a Trivia Night to raise money for The Salvation Army, Singapore. We knitted nine rugs for the girls’ and boys’ lounge areas at Melrose Home. We have contributed to the Poppies 5000 Australian project and knitted Christmas decorations for the elderly at the Salvation Army Family Support Services.” anza.org.sg/groups/knit-for-love December 2019 anza

CONGRATS CALLUM! Huge congrats to ANZA member CALLUM EADE on his successful swim of the English Channel. Callum is the second fastest Kiwi male to ever swim across, and in doing so raised over $140,000 for kids’ DIPG Brain Cancer.
“F
rom the time I touched French soil, I was on top of the world,” says Callum. “It’s been such a massive project, so I was also very relieved!” Callum is already planning more challenging swims. “I’m back in the water. I’ve truly developed a love for the ocean and its idiosyncrasies. We are looking at tackling one or two more big channels around the world.” “Thank you to the ANZA community for all your support. You have been instrumental in helping us raise money here in Singapore! ANZA Magazine will be the first to know when we crystalise the path forward on upcoming swims.”
Biggest challenge of the swim?
The aspect that I was worried about the most was the cold water. Interestingly, once the day got underway the training really came into play and I used the cold to keep loose and relaxed. The other element that was challenging were the jellyfish. The Channel has an abundance of sea life and on a calm day, they all like to head to the surface! I met my fair share of slimy, stingy friends!
How did you relax post swim?
My company (VMware) whisked us off to San Francisco to be part of a global presentation that our CEO was making. It was a huge honour and I still can’t believe how the months following the swim unfolded.
How will the funds raised be used?
These ended up directly in the hands of the children’s cancer program that we chose. It was so important to us that the funds ended up directly with the Children’s Cancer Institute of NSW to fight DIPG.

LUCKY 13’S Find out more about the coaches and players of ANZA Netball’s youngest age group, the 2013 girls!
JANELLE SOFFE,
2013 Head Coach, is loving the new season. Here’s what she had to say about getting involved with ANZA Netball.
1
Why did you start coaching with ANZA Netball? Netball has been a huge part of my life, for as long as I can remember. My mum played and coached me and my two sisters throughout school. I began coaching netball when I started my teaching career 16 years ago. After playing all my life, I wanted to be able to pass on my skills and knowledge and really enjoyed watching the girls I coached improve their skills and develop a love for netball. I still coach at the school where I work, and my daughter has finally reached the age where she can join ANZA Netball. I knew that having me there and showing her how much I love the game would hopefully encourage an enjoyment for her too.
2
What do you enjoy about coaching? Watching the girls develop their skills, working as a team, and of course developing a sense of enjoyment for the game from a young age. The sessions are fun and the volunteer coaches I work alongside are enthusiastic and brilliant with the girls.
3
How is your session adapted to suit the six-year-olds? We started the season using soft foam balls, so the girls could practise their ball skills without fearing the ball or going home with an injury. Once their confidence grew and their skills developed, we moved them onto real netballs, and they handled it very well.
Coach Ben, Coach Jasmine.
We play lots of games to encourage team spirit, we make it fun and use a lot of repetition - vital at this age. As the season progresses, we are now beginning to do small, adapted games to get the girls thinking about space, defending, attacking, pivoting and moving the ball between their teammates.
4
What do you have planned for the ANZA Netball Christmas session on 7 December? The girls at ANZA always look forward to the Christmas session which often involves a tournament, or some friendly games played between the teams. There will be also be some Christmas treats and decorations, the girls will have a fantastic time.
2013 is ANZA Netball’s youngest age group. There are some vacancies in this age group, which will be open at mid-season.
PARENTS WATCHING THE 2013 SESSION WERE ASKED WHAT THEIR DAUGHTER MOST ENJOYED ABOUT THE SESSIONS. “Jessica likes playing with her teammates and enjoys making friends from other schools.” “She’s really enjoying it. The coaches are lovely and it’s the first team sport she done. It’s great!” “ANZA Netball is really well organised. My child is loving netball; the coaches are fun; the session is fun and she’s making lots of new friends. She likes being part of a team - it’s the first time she’s participated in a team sport.”

SOCCER
Meet Our Senior Coaching Team!
ANZA Soccer’s professional coaches, who lead weekday practices, support parent coaches on Saturdays, and coach some competition teams, are also crucial components of our success. Leading them are our senior coaches, who bring knowledge, experience, and passion to ANZA Soccer. Let’s meet them! HEAD COACH YAKOB HASHIM Everyone knows Coach Yakob for his tireless support of ANZA Soccer, his ubiquitous presence at the pitches, and his very loud voice! Since 2011, Yakob has been responsible for managing over thirty professional coaches, liaising with The Cage Turf City’s grounds staff, running training programmes, supporting parent coaches on weekends, and handling the logistics of practice and game days. He also oversees our competition programme and currently coaches the B13 Sunday competition team. Yakob started his soccer journey on a small field in his kampong near the Istana. “We had no proper coach, but we played all the time, and eventually I was selected for my school team,” he remembers. An outstanding goalie, he was called up for the Singapore national team at 18 and played in the 1984 Asian Cup. He then joined professional club Home United and eventually moved to their coaching staff, winning the league championship in 1999. He also coached school teams and was the goalkeeping coach for the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), helping the national youth team win bronze in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. He remains a council member with FAS and acts as our liaison with the local football scene. “Let’s have fun, but let’s also be competitive!” is Yakob’s philosophy. “I believe with consistent work and focus, our players will feel confident about 62 anza
Soccer Dec19.indd 62
their chances in any game.” He enjoys being part of championship efforts, with favourites being the U18 teams that won their division in the 2014 and 2016 SEA Cups, and the teams who claimed last years’ JSSL International 7s Paul Parker Trophy for ANZA Soccer. He has also been excited to take our teams to many international tournaments, including
December 2019

two of Europe’s largest youth soccer competitions in Sweden and Spain. But most of all, he loves seeing each player grow in skills and character: “I enjoy every victory for the kids, whether it’s a tournament gold medal or a beginner who kicks his first good clearance in a Saturday game!”
COACH YAZRIN “Keep working, even when no one is watching” is Coach Yaz’s philosophy, and he certainly practices what he preaches! He seeks to create a fun learning environment for all players to nurture growth, character, and discipline. Coach Yaz started working with us a couple of years ago and is involved with our younger juniors’ and girls’ programmes and our representative teams. Coach Yaz has earned numerous coaching qualifications and has experience in coaching and management with community grassroots efforts as well as many Singapore schools and clubs, including the S.League Home United and Super Reds teams, Tanglin Trust School, JSSL Arsenal, and Fandi Ahmad’s F17 Academy. Since joining ANZA, he has focussed on making it “a place for kids to develop with quality coaching and guidance.” We are fortunate to have his steady hand helping our players and professional coaching staff!
COACH ADELINA GOMEZ Coach Addie joined ANZA Soccer to provide dedicated professional coaching for our expanding girls’ program. She is responsible for all girls’ training sessions and partners with parent coaches on game days. With her on board, the Matildas rose to new heights last season, clinching the JSSL International 7s gold medals for both the G14 and G16 groups
I believe I need to be a coach on the field and a friend off the field, this helps build trust.
- ADDIE, ANZA SOCCER and earning numerous first and second places in the JSSL Girls Sunday League, Bangkok International Girls Football Competition, and SingaCup Women’s 6s competition. Addie’s love for soccer began when she saw her uncle Sundramoorthy play for Singapore: “He scored the craziest bicycle kick in 1993, and even though I was only four, I remember the electrifying atmosphere!” Addie started playing competitively at 11, although her mother was dubious. “After much persuasion, she allowed me to play a game, and my passion for football skyrocketed,” Addie remembers. That season, her team won the championship and she was named Top Scorer. She then played for the Singapore women’s national team until
injury turned her focus to coaching. She completed a degree in Sport Science before becoming a full-time coach and starting her own girls’ programme. In August 2018, she joined ANZA Soccer. “I believe I need to be a coach on the field and a friend off the field,” says Addie. “This helps build trust, players feel comfortable, and that helps them want to do better in each game.” She says that with ANZA, she continues to live her childhood dream. “I’m glad I joined the family!” December 2019 anza

A WEDDING ON WHEELS!
It’s been a huge month in the ANZA Cycling world, with a wedding wheel of honour for a keen ANZA Cyclist, and other members diving into races on and off the island.
Tour de Kepri The highly anticipated Tour de Kepri was rescheduled from September to 1-3 November, due to the haze, but still drew a great field of competitors. The three-day race featured a Dompak Criterium, Bintan’s ‘Red Road to Hell’ and a quick island hop on the ferry for the final stage in Batam along the famous ‘Barelang’ Six Bridges ride. The women’s event was dominated by super strong Andrea Trindler. Having secured the win in the initial Criterium stage she maintained her lead throughout the next two stages, with another 1st in Stage 2 and then a 2nd in Stage 3 (by four 100ths of a second!). Andrea took out the General Classification (GC). 64 anza

URA CRITERIUM
L-R: Jock Hughson, Steve Davidson, Oliver Lewis and Michael Fantin.
Multi-sport racing
In the Supermasters event, Michael Fantin and Jock Hughson were building towards a 1-2 victory, with great support from teammates Pete Williamson, Alonso Vargas and Martin Herbrich, until Jock took a tumble and faced the insurmountable task of trying to chase back to the pack. Michael prevailed and locked in the top spot in GC in this tightly contested race. Oliver Lewis and Janus Dalsgaard put in sterling performances in the Masters Category, but being only two against some very solid teams found the going pretty tough, with Ollie finishing up in 6th and Janus in 9th GC position. The ANZA affiliated Allied World - Treknology 3 (AWT3) team also put in an excellent effort in the Open category , landing the team in 2nd position overall with a 3rd in GC for Pierre-Alain Scherwey. Congratulations to all members who raced over the grueling weekend!
Report: Jock Hughson
URA Criterium The URA Criterium was held as a precursor to the Car Free Sunday event on Sunday 27 October. The 1.7km course in the downtown Chinatown area was a sprinters loop - fast, with generous corners and no real selective elements, making breakaways difficult. The AWT3 lads, including Gernot Dobida, PierreAlain Scherwey, Rueben Bakker and Keiichi Hayashi rode in the A Grade race.
Cycling Dec19.indd 65
Michael Fantin (2nd), Chris Reynolds of Specialized Roval Mavericks (1st) and Brian Ng (3rd).
The strong field eventually closed all the breaks, most of which were made by the AWT3 team. The race was decided in a bunch sprint, won by Elyas Yusoff from CycleWorx, with Gernot and Pierre-Alain in the top 10. Toeing the line for the B grade Criterium were Michael Fantin, Oliver Lewis, Steve Davidson and Jock Hughson. In an evenly matched field, a few breaks were attempted, with the ANZA crew participating or chasing down all. Notably Olly and Steve got their noses in the wind quite a bit. Three laps to go the peloton was moving at a steady clip. Coming into the bell lap the pace was erratic with a few nervous breaks which were quickly closed. Into the back straight Michael and Jock had moved up into the top six spots with three Mavericks in the lead. The pace dropped momentarily and Jock put in an attack 600m from the finish, the Mavs and Michael followed. Michael had a good sit coming into the last corner and kicked hard finishing a narrow second in the sprint to the Mavs. Two races and two podiums for the ANZA race team. C Grade saw a large field of nearly forty riders with Francis Higgins representing ANZA. In contrast to the A and B races, an early break did stick, with a lone rider getting off the front in the early laps to eventually win.
Our triathletes had two major events slated for the very same weekend in October - it was a choice of either travelling to Langkawi for a full Ironman or Ironman 70.3 or staying home on the island for the City60 Duathlon. Members were spotted at all three events with some terrific performances, PBs, podiums and even some World Championship slots bagged. Congratulations to everyone who raced, and in particular to Stephanie Condon on her 2nd place at City60 and Jason Dubois for his 5th place at Langkawi, which earned him an entry to Taupo 70.3 World Champs next year. Jason arrived back in Singapore with just enough time to swap out his tri-kit for his cycling kit and head over to China where (at the time of writing) he is currently tackling the Tour of Yunnan 10-day stage race, along with Adam Scott, which looks an absolute cracker. We look forward to hearing more of that adventure when they get back!

12 Events of Christmas!
We’ve got that festive feeling at ANZA Athletics, and with the silly season in full swing, it’s an awesome way to work off all those mince pies. Our kids are participating with a touch of Christmas cheer - spot the reindeer antlers and tinsel tiaras tearing up the track! GEORGINA HOCKLEY rounds up ANZA Athletics 12 main events, to give you an idea why Friday nights are so much fun…
1
The 100 metre sprint is the glory event of athletics - there’s good reason Usain Bolt is a household name. It’s one hundred explosive metres of give it all you’ve got! We’re yet to meet an athlete that doesn’t love the adrenalin surge. At ANZA Athletics we start our kids on long jump from day one (triple jump comes later). There’s just something fun about running and launching yourself into a pit of sand. Not overstepping the mark to stop a foul jump is tricky for the little ones, but they catch on pretty quick. Shot put may not be the coolest event on the program, but it has redeeming qualities. The technique of “putting” (pushing, not throwing) the heavy little ball is harder than it looks and requires lots of concentration. The 200 metres is very much still a sprint, where kids run as fast as their engines can carry them. Jelly legs set in around the 150 metre mark, so it’s a challenge to power through to the finish line. By contrast, the 400 metres forces kids to pace themselves on the track. The trick is not to go out too hard, and to aim for a rock-star sprint finish. Discus is a sport that’s been popular since ancient times. Kids enjoy mastering the art of holding and throwing a heavy disc as far as is humanly possible. The 1100 metres is a true endurance event, one to test the limits. We love the camaraderie between the athletes, cheering each other on, and sometimes even running in pairs for support. The hurdles vie for top spot as the number one favourite ANZA Athletics event. Starting from five-year-olds hopping
2
over small heights, to the bigger kids leaping over fully extended hurdles, it’s a thrillingly fun race. The high jump involves kids Fosbury-flopping and scissor kicking over an ever-increasingly high bar onto a soft mat. It’s also a nail-biting spectator sport. The 70 metres is a fast paced sprint, over in the blink of an eye. Our tip – being quick off the mark can mean the difference between a win and a close second. Ready, set, go! The 800 metres teaches kids to dig in and never give up. It may come as no surprise that the competitive spirit always kicks in, as keeping up with your friends becomes the priority. The 1500 metres is a touch brutal in this Singapore heat, but it’s fabulous to build resilience in athletes U11 and above. Surprisingly, just when you think a child is about to give up, they find reserves and sprint to finish. ANZA Athletics truly is equal parts exhausting and energising. Post Christmas indulgence there’s no reason not to bring your kids trackside!

PETER DIXON PETER DIXON runs the Asia and Global Travel Retail for Accolade Wines, which sees him travelling the region and driving awareness for brands like Hardys, Banrock Station and Grant Burge. Dixon grew up in the Barossa wine region in South Australia and has spent a lifetime working in grapes. Where is your hometown? I grew up just outside of the Barossa Valley and went to school in Gawler. I’ve been living in Shanghai for the past six years and in Asia for over 11 years now. Tell us about your family’s involvement in the wine industry? My sister and her husband are large grape growers in Padthaway, South Eastern Australia. My Grandfather joined the wine industry in the late 1980’s. He was previously the Chairman of BRL Hardy Ltd and was awarded a Order of Merit from the Queen for his positive influence on the Australian wine industry. When did you first know you wanted to work in the wine industry? Growing up, I always had a fascination with the wine industry. I knew it was for me when I began working at Hardys Cellar Door sales while completing my Bachelor of Economics at Adelaide University. What did working in cellar door sales teach you about wine? How to excite people about different wine brands, tell the different stories about where the wines came from, and how they came about - through traditional methods or new, innovative winemaking techniques. Tell us about your role at Accolade Wines? My job entails setting our short and long-term strategies, motivating and energising our team and partners to

drive availability and brand awareness for our portfolio and lots of time on the road traveling. What do you want to achieve in the role? I want Hardys, Banrock Station and Grant Burge to become household wine names in all core markets across Asia where consumers actively seek out these great quality brands. Secrets to finding a good wine in Singapore? Some of the wine bars are excellent in Singapore and the choice just keeps getting better and better. I like to explore new places to eat and drink across Singapore and all markets I’m fortunate enough to visit.
PETER’S WINE TIPS Favourite affordable bottle? A good value wine is Hardys Nottage Hill Chardonnay. A splurge wine? Grant Burge Meschake. Your favourite style of wine? Rich dry reds - I love Cabernet and dry high acid Riesling from the Clare Valley. Most memorable glass of wine? Le Tache in Bangkok when I was 24 years old and with our distributor, Ambrose. Tips for keeping wine in a hot climate? A wine fridge is an imperative - there are many sizes available to cool six bottles, up to 200. accoladewines.com
