“Research shows expats like me are more likely to struggle with stress, anxiety, depression and alcohol/substance abuse than their counterparts back home.”

his month I really threw myself into the pursuit of wellness, our theme for this issue. In the name of research I had 13 spa treatments, a TCM consultation, two naturopath appointments, and flew to Koh Samui in Thailand to spend time at an award-winning wellness sanctuary. I did yoga, pilates, swam laps, meditated, and even sat in a monk’s cave and set an intention for living a more present, connected life. I knocked back kale and turmeric shots, made my own bircher muesli, tried digitally detoxing (failed), gave up coffee (for now) and searched for my bliss. I did this all for you, dear reader, so you can also explore the world of wellness in Singapore, and beyond. Okay, to be honest, I also did it for myself. A full-time job, health issues, family commitments, travel, a high sugar diet, and busy social life had left me feeling a little depleted and stressed out. Sound familiar? Research shows expats are more likely to struggle with stress, anxiety, depression and alcohol/ substance abuse than their counterparts back home. We need to take care of ourselves.

Wellness might seem like a trendy buzzword, but it’s actually pretty sensible advice; put yourself first sometimes, be mindful, slow down, take a healthy holiday, eat whole foods, add plants to your diet, tackle a fitness goal, or even involve your kids in a wellness activity…do any one of these things and you’ll be taking a step towards a healthier lifestyle. G’DAY AND WELCOME TO SEPTEMBER!

T

his is our wellness issue, where we focus on our wellbeing and how it supports a healthy and fulfilling life. This isn’t always easy - as expats we live a fast paced and sometimes indulgent existence! Finding a healthy balance can be a struggle, and one that we need to continually reinforce. My cancer scare in 2013 certainly brought wellness back into my frame of thinking, specifically after my football career, where wellness was just as important but with different priorities. With Jo and I now having our gorgeous little baby boy Ashleigh, an area I’ve taken a greater interest in and have an enormous appreciation for is wellness for children, particularly those of school age. Positive Education is an approach that combines traditional education with lessons on character, resilience and happiness. Martin Seligman is considered the father of positive psychology by which the framework of Positive Education was built. His Six Classes of Virtues refer to broad classifications of 24 character strengths that we all possess. These are:

For children to have the opportunity to be the best version of themselves, Positive Education is integral. Life can be tough and our children’s ability to embrace the trials and tribulations in life requires a focus on the whole child – academic, physical, creative, altruistic and relational. Kids are growing up in a world with increasing technology use, but it’s these uniquely human skills that prepare our children for success in an unknown and increasingly uncertain future. As parents, a focus on the academic growth of our children is important, but it’s just one facet of the total education of our children. To create well-rounded, resilient and ambitious young people, both parents and the school must play an active role in this area together. Be well and stay positive ANZA and have an outstanding month ahead!

WHAT’S ON

TREE CHANGE

Aussie ANDY GRIFFITHS is one of the biggest names in publishing – smashing bestseller lists around the globe with his wildly popular Treehouse series, illustrated by Terry Denton. Andy chatted to ANZA about the stage show, The 13-Storey Treehouse, coming to Singapore this month. Did you ever imagine how big this treehouse series would get? No way! The 13-Storey Treehouse was the seventh in a series of experimental books that Terry and I had been writing in an attempt to work out how to get Terry’s pictures to be an essential part of the story-telling process and not just decoration. We knew we’d created an original and unusual book, but it wasn’t until the kids embraced it so enthusiastically that we realised that the Treehouse held a powerful appeal for so many readers in so many different countries. There was originally no intention of making it a series— nine books later we are still adding more storeys! What’s the most rewarding thing about working on this popular book series? To know that we are converting so many children—many of whom thought they hated books and reading—into passionate readers. And the sheer fun of creating the books and the challenge of making each book even sillier and more outlandish than the previous one. Describe your relationship with Terry Denton? In the books our fictional versions of ourselves are often arguing and prone to having intergalactic space battles, but in real life our relationship is harmonious and joyful. We have been working together for more than twentyfive years now. We are different

people but have a shared love of the absurd and when we get together ideas and drawings begin to flow very quickly. There’s no ego involved—the best idea wins every time. What can kids expect with the stage show? Well, it’s pretty much the same as the book, except that instead of trying to write a book Andy and Terry are trying to put on a play that they have failed to write in time before the audience turned up. It captures the spirit of the books very faithfully and is a lot of fun! How fun is it touring to different countries and meeting readers? It’s one of the most enjoyable— and unexpected—rewards of writing books. To meet excited readers all over the world is a dream come true, really. And the experience of travelling to all these different countries gives me lots of ideas for new levels. If you had a treehouse, what would you include? A dedicated book reading and music listening library would be all I need. What would you like to do in Singapore while you’re here? I’m keen to see the Singapore Botanic Gardens—I’m hoping it might inspire a garden level in the treehouse. What’s next? We’ve just published The 117 Storey Treehouse so if my maths is correct the next book will be The 130 Storey Treehouse … gulp!

Australian film maker Karina Holden’s powerful eco-documentary, BLUE, screened to a sold-out audience at The Projector. BLUE addresses issues of plastic pollution, overfishing, declining marine life, destruction of ocean and marine habitats, ocean change, and sustainable seafood practices. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Ms Holden moderated by Michelle Goh from the S.E.A Aquarium’s Conservation and Research Department. Topics ranged from detailed questions about the industry practices shown in the film to what consumers and individuals can do to help make a difference. Ms Holden was encouraged to hear from 8-year-old Singaporeborn Australian, Lana, at the event who has started a group called ‘Save Our Earth’ (SOE) with her school friends.

Learning from a master

MasterChef Singapore judge, and former MasterChef Australia finalist, Audra Morrice inspired aspiring chefs from culinary institutes across Singapore with a cooking masterclass at Temasek Culinary Institute. Ms Morrice showcased fresh Aussie produce and nutritious vegetable powders, giving local favourites laksa and potsticker dumplings an innovative twist. Ms Morrice also discussed sustainability and reducing food waste on farms and featured broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and pumpkin vegetable powders in her dishes. The powders were developed by Australia’s CSIRO and Hort Innovation, to help reduce food loss on farms, create new revenue streams for farmers and pack extra vegetables into our diet.

Singapore rolled out the red carpet for Miranda Tapsell, her family and invited guests for a special screening of the heart-warming Australian romantic comedy, Top End Wedding. The screening coincided with Australia’s NAIDOC Week 2019, held annually to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Australia’s First Nation people - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Ms Tapsell, who is also the film’s co-writer and Associate Producer, moderated by leadership consultant Margie Warrell. Ms Tapsell talked about why the film was so important to her personally and explained how it was also a “love letter” to her family and the stunning landscapes of the Northern Territory where it was filmed.

DID YOU KNOW: Singapore’s first ever bilateral Free Trade Agreement, the Closer Economic Partnership (CEP), was signed with New Zealand in 2000. Currently, Singapore is New Zealand’s largest trading partner in South East Asia, and our 7th largest trading partner globally, with two way trade amounting to NZ$5.2 billion. We have upgraded the CEP as part of the EP. Some features of the upgraded agreement are: Improved access for New Zealand business visitors to Singapore, who will soon be able to stay for 90 days at a time (up from the original 30 days); Provisions for New Zealand intra-corporate transferees to be granted a total potential stay of eight years (from a previous limit of five years). The new Partnership for Growth Arrangement under the EP will also help New Zealand businesses expand their operations in Singapore, by providing support through business missions, seminars and workshops. From 1 October, nationals from visa-waiver countries (excluding Australia) travelling to or transiting in New Zealand will require an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). Apply via the official Immigration New Zealand (INZ) mobile app (NZD $9) or website (NZD $12) at immigration.govt.nz/ nzeta. Approval can take up to 72 hours, so remember to request it well in advance of your planned travel! Additionally, all visitors (excluding Australian citizens) will be required to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) which costs NZD $35 and is payable at the same time you request the NZeTA. Both the NZeTA and IVL will be valid for multiple entries over two years.

ASEAN YOUNG DIPLOMATS STUDY TOUR Earlier this year, 10 young diplomats from across Southeast Asia visited New Zealand for a two-week study tour. They met some our leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters, and experienced all that New Zealand has to offer! Here's what Michelle Lim, the representative from Singapore, had to say about her time in New Zealand:

The ASEAN Young Diplomats Study Tour was a good learning opportunity for ASEAN diplomats to gain a better understanding of New Zealand (NZ), and to network with our NZ counterparts as well as with each other. In 12 days, I made new friends, gained new skills as a diplomat, and had many opportunities to network with NZ government officials, businessmen, and think tanks. Through the various exchanges and visits to museums, NZ’s Parliament House, and local businesses, I have gained a better understanding of NZ as a country. I have also gained a deeper appreciation for Maori culture and its strong set of values.

stablished in 1902, CAS is among Singapore’s oldest, secular philanthropic organisations supporting disadvantaged children, youth, and families. Melrose Home (CAS) in Clementi provides a nurturing ‘home away from home’ for vulnerable children and youth (6-18 years old) coping with adverse family circumstances, family violence, or child neglect issues. The Home augments residential care services with a holistic range of programmes and therapeutic interventions to guide their young charges towards healthy growth and development and ultimately, successful family reunification or independent living. CAS’s new service, Melrose Care, in Woodlands plans to play a bigger role

in supporting vulnerable children, youths and underserved families in the community. Melrose Care is the first purpose-built counselling centre for art and play therapy services in Singapore. Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy which uses art media purposefully (drawing, painting etc) to effect change and growth in a supported and safe environment. Experienced Art Therapists Ms Jeanette Chan and Ms Charlene Ouyang work alongside the community. “As therapists, we become witnesses to the life experiences of people who have been through challenging or even traumatic experiences. We hold the space to make it supportive and safe for them to tell their stories and share their emotions.”

“When words are not enough… art therapy becomes a non-intrusive platform for one to tell their stories or express any intense emotions,” Ms Jeanette Chan, Senior Art Therapist

CAS aims to make art therapy accessible and create awareness of alternative therapeutic treatment for those who are more comfortable expressing their world through creative means.

ANZA STITCHES AT MELROSE HOME ANZA Stitches recently held sewing workshops over two days to help girls at Melrose Home improve their sewing skills. Stitches members kindly provided sewing machines for the workshops as well as all the materials. Art is an incredibly versatile medium to engage Melrose Home’s residents and they have observed numerous benefits ranging from functional skills development (i.e. sewing, embroidery and craft making techniques) to promoting creativity and self-expression, as well as therapeutic outcomes. “The sewing workshops led by ANZA Stitches complement our female youth residents’ interests and with the volunteers’ guidance, the girls have been able to progress in their skills and have learned how to make a variety of new pouches and cushions. Interaction with the volunteers was also valuable and we strive to support our residents through meaningful time spent with positive role models of diverse backgrounds and expertise,” says Ms Lim Wan Yin, Senior Executive (Community Engagement). “The ANZA community has been a valuable partner of CAS over the years, enthusiastically supporting us through

a variety of recreational activities, home improvement projects, donation-in-kind initiatives, and fundraising campaigns. Such volunteer projects are incredibly valuable to us and we hope that ANZA can continue to journey with us as we grow and develop to better serve our community and those in need.” The ANZA Stiches group also benefited from the experience. “As a group we had a great time working with the girls, they really seemed to embrace the opportunity to learn a new skill,” says Elizabeth Mann. “It’s always wonderful to be able to share our love of sewing with others and to see the sense of accomplishment that comes with creating a unique handmade piece.” We wish CAS all the best with the launch of Melrose Care and will continue

to support CAS and Melrose Home with their important work with vulnerable Singaporeans. To find out more about Children’s Aid Society’s programmes and services, follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/childrensaidsocietysg.

This year, through your donations at events and the generous support of Secret Men’s Business, ANZA Action have raised over $14,000 for Melrose Home.

style coffee bar, which offers unique coffee offerings, an artisanal toast bar, and an experiential brew bar for customers to have a go at brewing and interacting with coffee apparatus. The café is also an employee’sonly initiative, which means long term staff will share in the profits.

6 BIKE PATH From 7am-10am, you can ride a bike through Funan’s 200-metre indoor cycling track, whizzing past stores and eateries. A motion detector camera lights up LED light strips on the path whenever there’s movement. There are some rules in place – a 10km speed limit applies and after 10am you’ll have to dismount and walk your bike through the mall. Funan is designed with cyclists in mind - there are bike bays, electric bike charging stations, a bike friendly lift, a pump and repair zone, and showers for cyclists. A nod to a car-lite future.

7 WEWORK Looking for a space to co-work and create? WeWork has set up camp over two floors at Funan. Get your next bright idea lounging in art-filled lounges, unique conference rooms, and sleek private offices. There’s a brainstorming room with writeable walls and stand-up-friendly furniture, plus showers, fruit water, and freshly roasted coffee.

8 ARK FUTSAL #07 Fancy a kick in the clouds? The ARK is a fully automated rooftop football pitch, nestled among Funan’s leafy Urban Farm zone. Invite some mates for a kickabout session, organise teambuilding with workmates, or throw a birthday party with a difference. Book ahead online at theark.sg.

9 WILD RICE THEATRES #04-08 Singaporean theatre group WILD RICE finally has its very own theatre at Funan. The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre is a 358-seat venue featuring Singapore’s first thrust stage, inspired by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in StratfordUpon-Avon. For their Grand Opening Season, WR will circle back to the first play they ever staged; Stella Kon’s classic Emily of Emerald Hill, opening on 4 September.

10 ROOFTOP Head to level ‘R’ for stunning rooftop views of the Marina Bay area on one side, and leafy Fort Canning on the other. There are barbecue pits, a large table, lots of seating and fairy lights at night. A hidden gem! capitaland.com/sg/malls/funan

Expats THORBEN LINNEBERG and NADINE KELLER created the Aerospring gardening system, so they could grow vegetables on their balcony. Their urban gardening hobby has become a booming business. Nadine talks to ANZA about how gardening helps condo dwellers relax, relieve stress and grow their own produce.

HOW DOES AEROSPRING WORK? The Aerospring is a standalone vertical aeroponic gardening system. There’s a bucket at the base and a submersible pump which feeds the water up through connected pipe. Hydroponic nutrients are added into the bucket containing the water which provides everything the plant needs to grow healthy and strong. This method uses less than 10% of the water that a conventional garden does and the plants grow 30% quicker, so your harvest is a lot more productive.

HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU NEED TO INSTALL A GARDEN? The bucket is about 50cm in diameter but we recommend allocating at least a square metre. You’ll need a little more space if you want to grow a vine like cucumbers, tomatoes, melons or passionfruit. We use the balcony grilles as a trellis to support them. 22 anza

WHAT CAN YOU GROW IN SINGAPORE? Contrary to popular belief, you can grow leafy greens, herbs, vegetables and even fruit in Singapore with a little effort and the right amount of sunshine. Our best performers are tuscan kale, chillis (we like to grow habaneros and jalapenos), basil, mint, cucumbers, eggplant, passionfruit, rosemary and tarragon. With a little effort and care, you can also grow tomatoes, more delicate herbs like parsley, dill and thyme, as well as lettuce, mustards and mizuna.

WHAT MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED? We recommend spending five minutes, three times a week to check on your water and nutrient levels, to tend to the plants like clipping away damaged or dead leaves as well as to trim and harvest plants as they grow. Once every 8-12

There’s really no disputing the fact that being outside, growing food, and tending to plants contributes to a better state of mind, better health and a positive outlook on life. - NADINE KELLER

3 health benefits of growing your own produce! Store bought greens start losing their taste, freshness and nutrition within hours of being harvested, so by the time they’re transported all the way to Singapore, they’ve lost most of their nutrient density. A lot of the time, vegetables are picked and transported underripe, so that they’re just right by the time you buy them in store. That also means that anything bought at the store doesn’t last very long in the fridge. You have complete control over how your veg is grown – you really have no idea what kind of pesticides or fungicides were used in the production of store-bought vegetables. Store bought greens without a single tear or hole in the foliage usually indicate that some form of pesticide was used.

weeks, you need to empty out the water in the bucket completely and refill with fresh water and nutrients. Edible plants have a life cycle so after 30 days, you’ll need to harvest and replant your lettuce.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF A GREEN SPACE? Being outdoors encourages some soaking up of vitamin D from the sun and helps your heart health as you work up a sweat tending to your garden. Gardening can relieve stress, something many city dwellers suffer from. There’s something very therapeutic and relaxing about tending to your plants: starting them from seed, watching them grow and having the satisfaction of growing some of your own food. Nature provides the best respite from a hectic and busy life.

DOES IT HELP BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER? Gardening is a fantastic family activity.

It’s important for the next generation to understand where our food comes from, how plants grow and to be involved in starting a garden. Children have such inquisitive minds and showing them how a seed germinates, grows, flowers and fruits is a wonderful activity that will keep them engaged and connected to nature. It also encourages them to eat more greens, and puts them on a path to healthy eating, once they establish a connection to their food and where it comes from.

HOW DOES GARDENING CONTRIBUTE TO OUR OVERALL SENSE OF WELLBEING? There’s a feel-good factor that happens when you are connected to nature. Being able to harvest the fruits of your labour from your very own garden is so satisfying and empowering. Gardening therapy programs now exist all over the world and are prescribed by doctors and

Growing your own produce allows you to experiment with varieties you wouldn’t ordinarily find in the store: heirloom varieties of tomatoes, exotic chilis, hard to find leafy greens and herbs. Some specialty herbs like Summer Savory or sorrel are almost impossible to buy in Singapore so the only way to include those in a recipe that calls for them, would be to grow your own! Ready to nurture your green thumb? The Aerospring Indoor retails at $1499 and is available through aerospringgardens.com

therapists to help alleviate stress and low moods. Dedicated gardeners have been practicing mindfulness well before it being a ‘thing’. There’s really no disputing the fact that being outside, growing food, and tending to plants, contributes to a better state of mind, better health and a positive outlook on life! September 2019

acked schedules and pressure to perform can lead to kids experiencing stress from a young age. Integrating some yoga or mindfulness practices can teach them relaxation and give them a chance to ‘switch off’ from their daily routine.

Yoga improves their balance, flexibility, strength, concentration, sleep quality and channels their energy.

She offers classes for both kids and adults, and conducts yoga programs in some international schools. “Yoga provides different opportunities as children grow: balance, focus, flexibility, strength, selfesteem and confidence,” explains Sophie. A typical class starts with the kids sitting in a circle, not rows. Breathing 24 anza

exercises and warm ups come first. “We then move into yoga poses – which are brought to kids through stories, songs, or a special theme. We imitate animals’ positions and sounds: kids yoga classes are vibrant, energetic, inclusive! We transition then slowly into a quiet time, and relaxation,” says Sophie. “I try teaching yoga in a creative, accessible and fun way, so kids will practice while having fun. Every class

comes with a special theme, story or concept (Christmas, Jungle, Chakras…). Yoga improves their balance, flexibility, strength, concentration, sleep quality and channels their energy.” Sophie’s passion for kids yoga has extended to writing a series of kids yoga activity books, called Miniyogi (miniyogi.com). “One book is equivalent to one yoga class, it includes story time, breathing exercises, yoga poses, games and relaxation moments.”

Como Shambhala, Orchard Road comoshambhala.com/singapore/ classes/yoga/kids-yoga Como Shambhala’s kids yoga program is adapted from the pioneering YogaKids International program, and is suitable for kids of all ages. It uses games and cooperative play while encouraging children to use their imagination imitating poses like animals and nature elements. The class will give them basic techniques for relaxation, self-control, and stress-release, and help them gain increased flexibility, strength, stamina, self-confidence, and coordination. The yoga classes are best suited to kids between five and 11 years old. Como Shambhala also offers a Mindfulness class for pre-teens (around 10 - 12 year olds) to teach relaxation and elements of meditation. Tiny Movements Co, Singapore Botanical Gardens, tinymovementsco.com Cheryl Ow teaches yoga sessions conducted on Wobbel Boards (a curved wooden board for balancing). They are held outdoors, usually at Singapore Botanical Gardens. “We combine children’s yoga with the Wobbel Board - a curved board that accentuates movement - to unite both mind and body. Mindfulness and meditation techniques are also taught to boost patience, self-confidence and physical strength,” explains Cheryl. She offers parent and toddler Wobbelyoga classes, best for children around 18 months to three years old, and drop-off classes for children from three to 12 years. “We always start with songs to break the ice, then breathing techniques, warm ups, sun salutation, games incorporating yoga poses, sometimes arts and crafts or brain yoga activities then ending with relaxation activities and meditation.”

The Open Centre, Turf Club Rd theopencentre.com.sg The Open Centre is a space for mindfulness, resilience and creative arts for all members of the community. One of its more popular programs is ‘The Resilient Child’ for ages six to 12. The program covers topics like self-awareness, recognising how emotions and thoughts can influence behaviour, regulating emotions (responding instead of reacting), empathy and goal-setting. The Centre also holds mindfulness holiday camps for primary-school aged children. These week-long camps are designed to teach kids life skills in a fun and relaxing environment. Daily activities include art projects, nature exploration, mindfulness and concentration activities, games and ‘mindful movement’ to calm the mind and strengthen the body.

WELLNESS WARRIOR

Aussie Spartan star NATALIE DAU is currently training for a 100km ultra marathon and is the creator of The Daily Escape, a health and fitness platform, and the Rockstar Fit training app. She talks to ANZA about motherhood, balance, and the small wellness fixes that make a difference.

When did you first move to Singapore? I moved to Singapore 15 years ago with my job. At the time I was working for an analyst firm. I’d planned to come for two years but loved it so much I didn’t leave! Singapore is home now.

What has been your journey to health and wellness? I was always focused on staying healthy when working in the corporate world; one of these crazy people waking up at 5am to go to the hotel gym and taking protein bars into meetings. I got more serious when I decided to change my career and follow my passion to try and make an impact on the world around health and fitness. I started winning races and ended up representing Singapore at two Spartan World Championships. Things snowballed with sponsorships, and today life is crazy competing in things all over the world and running a business full time. Currently I’m training for 100km ultramarathon and will finish my season with the Great Eastern Women’s Run on the 3 November.

What does wellness mean to you now? I make sure I’m looking after myself as a whole. Not just physically training hard, but eating right, getting enough sleep and managing stress. It’s all about finding that balance.

26 anza

Natalie Dau Sept19.indd 26

Wellness is just my life. From the moment I get up to run at 5am, to what I eat for lunch and making sure I’m getting quality time with my family. It should just be integrated into everything we do.

September 2019

6/8/2019 5:38:27 PM

What’s one wellness activity you swear by? I’m a much nicer person when I have exercised as that’s my time to destress – some people meditate, I run! Also, two important things which people dismiss far too easily – getting enough sleep (at least eight hours) and drinking enough water (I always encourage anyone in Singapore to drink three litres a day with the humidity). Sleep and hydration can make a huge difference to how you function.

What’s your advice for those wanting to be fit, but can’t afford an expensive gym membership? Gone are the days of having to join an expensive gym to exercise. There are so many free or low-cost activities on offer from the likes of ActiveSG to SportsHub.

What’s your typical day of eating? I eat the same thing almost every day! Breakfast is coffee, eggs and salad, a protein bar as a snack, steamed vegetables and some turkey for lunch and then late afternoon I might have some cottage cheese and vegetables. Weekends I am more relaxed and indulge a bit more. I also try and stick to a mostly vegetarian diet as red meat doesn’t work for me with my rheumatoid arthritis.

What are you most looking forward to with the Great Eastern Women’s Run? I can’t wait to have so many amazing females coming together to run, be healthy and have fun. I also can’t wait to do it with my daughter so she can witness again what a positive impact a fitness community has.

How do you encourage movement in kids? Kids follow by example. As a mum to a 10-year-old daughter she thinks it’s normal that families exercise as that’s what she’s always seen us doing. We also try and look for events to do together and make family time on weekends activity based – it just needs to be fun for kids and they’ll want to do it.

Great Eastern Women’s Run 2019

How do you use your large social media reach to influence healthy living?

Run with Natalie on Sunday 3 November at The Singapore Sports Hub

For me it’s about being real with my followers – letting them know everyone has good and bad days, being open and consistent with my messages, not taking myself too seriously and trying to inspire others to make that one small change that could be the difference to their life.

• Race categories offered this year include the 21.1km, 10km, 5km, the 2km ‘Mummy + Me’ run for mothers and daughters aged 7 to 12 and the popular ‘Princess Dash’ for girls aged 3 to 6. Register now at greateasternlife.com/greateasternwomensrun

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN SINGAPORE?

There are two simple steps that will set you up for much greater long-term success.

1

Find a friend or join a like-minded community around health and fitness. This will keep you accountable, provide social interaction and make it more fun! There are so many great communities in Singapore from Spartan Race groups, gyms like F45, running or trail walking clubs or options like a Classpass where you can try lots of different activities. Start with small changes or goals. Don’t train for a marathon week one, and don’t try and completely change your diet – small wins are easier and before you know it, it’s become a healthy habit and

Celebration, gratitude and reunion are at the heart of this month’s vibrant MidAutumn Festival, which brings with it colourful mooncakes and lanterns. Pastry chef, JANICE WONG, shares her secrets for making the beloved pastries and finding balance in her life. You might be known as a dessert master, but you also have a wellness approach to your treats? Yes, our wellness approach is very much driven by the people and how consumer habits and preferences are changing. Wellness is a trend that is happening all over the world and not just in Singapore, so we always bear this in mind for opportunities to create new products for different festivals.

How do occasional sweet things form part of a holistic diet? To be honest, this is a challenge because sweets have always been more of an indulgence, but what we can do is to simply harness the natural flavours of the ingredients as much as we can. I believe that if we focus on showcasing natural flavours, it can be part of a holistic and healthy diet.

How did you choose the flavours for your mooncakes this year? It was in Tokoshima, Japan that I was inspired to make the mooncakes. We found high quality and fresh sweet potato paste that I thought would be perfect for a mooncake filling. I’ve found other amazing ingredients all over Japan during my frequent travels across the country. In local Japanese farms, the ingredients and produce are treated with care and

Janice Wong Sept19.indd 32

7/8/2019 4:12:20 PM

ANZA Editor Pip Harry attended a mooncake making class with Janice.

How do you like to celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival? Mid-Autumn Festival in Singapore is a season of gifting, so that’s how I like to celebrate it – using this opportunity to gift mooncakes and spend time with loved ones.

What tea would you serve with your mooncakes for optimal wellness? Our French Blue Earl Grey Tea helps to alleviate digestive problems, boosts the immune system, and improves oral health.

It was important that the mooncakes be lower in sugar for health reasons… the focus was really to bring out the quality of the ingredients and the natural flavours.

How do you find balance in your own life? I always watch what I eat and I’m very conscious about what my body is taking in. Yoga is something that helps me to refresh and recharge.

- JANICE WONG involve a lot of human labour. It was the desire to showcase all these high-quality ingredients in one box that sparked the idea of choosing a signature ingredient from each prefecture as the nine mooncake flavours.

Why Japan as a source? Since 2011, I have been working on various projects in Japan, and have always been amazed at the quality of the ingredients. I also have close relationships with many of the local farmers there, so it was natural that Japan would be the top choice to source for my mooncake ingredients.

What wellness properties do your mooncakes have? It was important that the mooncakes be lower in sugar for health reasons. We were able to control the sugar and oil content in the mooncakes. The focus was really to bring out the quality of the ingredients and the natural flavours. For example, the sweet potato mooncake paste has zero sugar – natural sweetness comes from the potato. The ingredients chosen also have strong wellness properties. For example, ume, Japanese plum, is known to be a “superfood” and has many health

benefits including improved blood circulation, immunity and hair growth. Matcha (green tea) is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body while yuzu is high in vitamin C and contains antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. They’re also smaller in portion size, so you can try more flavours in one seating!

What is next for the Janice Wong brand? We are working towards an elaborate Christmas season for the end of the year. I’m excited about the newly established Janice Wong Japan company. Singapore’s Top Spas

On the toughest assignment of her life, PIP HARRY tests four of Singapore’s leading day spas…

So SPA

30 Allanbrooke Rd, Sentosa, 099983 sofitel-singapore-sentosa.com/spa-fitness/so-spa

The vibe:

Serene but social, this large spa attracts gaggles of girlfriends and weary travellers. Located in a quiet corner of Sentosa, next to Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa, So SPA is housed in a restored heritage-listed 19th century building. You won’t feel crowded, the spa sprawls over 6,000 sqm of lush rainforest, with female and unisex areas, two pools, and a café.

The Treatment:

Sentosa Massage (60 minutes $180) On a Saturday, I arrive at the spa a little early and take a seat in the lobby to fill in a health form and sip a welcome ginger tea. My restorative hour-long massage starts with a foot bath, then I select eucalyptus and mint oil for my treatment, hoping to quell a lingering headache. Using a combination of east and west techniques, my therapist performs an excellent, deeply relaxing full body massage. Heated pads on my lower back while she massages my feet and legs are a nice touch. 34 anza

TopSpas.indd 34

When the treatment is finished, my headache has disappeared.

Added extras:

Before or after your treatment, lounge around the waterfall float pool or main lap pool area, grab a healthy bite at The Garden restaurant or douse yourself liberally in clay mud in one of the two mud pools.

Spa Pods at Six Senses Maxwell 2 Cook Street, 078857

sixsenses.com/hotels/maxwell/spa

The vibe:

Spa Pods at Six Senses Maxwell features five new spa pods and two relaxation rooms, located within the stunning heritage hotel. Designed to be an urban sanctuary in the heart of Singapore’s city centre, the spa pods feature innovative wellness experiences. Though not a traditional spa set-up, each pod is lavishly appointed, and has its own ensuite.

The Treatment:

Locally Inspired Wellness Retreat (2 hrs 15 mins, $300). Featuring Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and massage, this experience starts with a consultation with a seasoned practitioner from a local TCM clinic, followed by wellness recommendations. After checking my eyes, tongue, blood pressure and pulse, my TCM practitioner advises against eating ‘cooling’ foods like cucumber and watermelon, instead going for ‘warming’ foods like red dates. She also advises starting my day by taking a brisk walk with the sun on my back. That sounds doable. Following the consultation, I check in for the relaxing wellness retreat, designed to ease stress and tension. After

a lemongrass and apple welcome drink and a cool towel, the therapist washes my feet, sounds a singing bowl and performs a 40-minute back, head and shoulder massage incorporating heated balls made from amethyst crystals. The truly wonderful journey continues with an orchid-scented Himalayan salt scrub, a nurturing rose body mask and a lifting facial massage, using a bamboo stick to roll away the years. A rose and jasmine body oil and a moment to myself in the relaxation room with a date, almond and grape snack completes the indulgent experience.

Added extras:

The package includes a wellness lunch at either Yellow Pot Chinese Restaurant or Cook & Tras Social Library, but it’s late on a Friday afternoon and an ANZA work function calls.

ESPA

8 Sentosa Gateway, 098269 rwsentosa.com/espa

The vibe:

Set over an expansive 10,000 sqm of verdant jungle and peaceful lagoons, ESPA is Resorts World Sentosa’s flagship spa in Asia. It’s impressive on every level – including an authentic Turkish hammam, vitality pools, forest onsen-style pools, sleep zones, rock saunas, crystal steam rooms, and more. You’ll never want to leave.

The Treatment:

ESPA Sleep Ritual ($280, a 90-minute treatment to promote restful and rejuvenating sleep) Who doesn’t need more restful sleep? In Singapore it’s a regular occurrence to be woken up by roaring traffic, construction noise and cracking lighting storms, not to mention work and life stress keeping you wide eyed after lights out. ESPA has designed this sleep treatment for night owls looking for more restorative slumber. The ritual starts with some basic breathing exercises to unwind, plus colour visualisation (I choose yellow) followed by a deeply relaxing treatment. My therapist combines therapeutic hot stones and warm oil with a soothing full body massage and a tranquilising scalp massage. I may have dozed off a couple of times! Continue the snooze theme with a visit to the 18 purpose-built sleep pods with builtin music.

Added extras:

After my treatment I visit the relaxation room in my robe and slippers, trying a few of the vegetable crisps, fruits and other snacks. Then I make the most of the amazing facilities, soaking in the hot onsen pools, and taking a quick sauna and crystal steam. Peckish? The Tangerine Spa Café offers views of the reflection pool and a Thai-inspired menu that uses a farm to table concept, including herbs picked from the onsite garden.

Banyan Tree Spa

10 Bayfront Avenue Tower 1, Level 55, 018956 banyantreespa.com/find-a-spa/banyan-tree-spa-marinabay-sands

The vibe:

Photos: Marina Bay Sands

Banyan Tree Spa is set on the soaring 55th storey of Marina Bay Sands, with breath-taking views from the well-appointed treatment rooms. The spa is discreet and exclusive, catering to in-house guests and locals, with a well-curated menu of holistic treatments, full body massages, calming baths and facials.

The Treatment:

Balinese Massage, (60-minutes, $298 or $270 off peak) I’m greeted warmly at the reception area and given a cold towel and the drink of the day – Pink Romance, a red cabbage and lime concoction that’s slightly sweet and very refreshing. I tap in my health info on an iPad and am swiftly taken to a treatment room with huge floor to ceiling windows and sweeping ocean views. I’m seated for a foot bath with rose petals, where I choose between the Touch of Love and the Touch of Peace massage oils. I give peace a chance (sorry, couldn’t resist). The massage is a mix of firm, soothing stokes with deep thumb and palm pressure – it’s a little too strong for me, but the therapist tones it down accordingly. There are some lovely touches – including heated

pads on the back and stomach, a scalp massage and hot towels to remove the oil at the end.

Added extras:

After the massage, I’m taken for 30 minutes of ‘Calm Time’, in a stunning tea room with 360-degree views of Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, and the city. Here, my attentive and caring therapist brings me jasmine tea with a touch of honey, mixed nuts, yogurt with sesame seeds, and a small fruit salad with fresh mint. It’s a delightful end to a memorable experience. September 2019

KATHIRASAN K is the Founder & Director of Singapore’s Centre for Mindfulness. He first discovered mindfulness in the mid-90’s and found it life changing. “I set up the centre, so others could benefit from the practice like I had,” he says.

What exactly is mindfulness? Self-knowledge or self-awareness honed by purposeful attentional practices. I particularly like the definition given by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, which is the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally, in the service of self-understanding and wisdom. 38 anza

Mindfulness Sept19.indd 38

Why has it become so popular in the age of digital devices? The biggest challenge we are facing at the tail end of the third industrial revolution is information overload. This has created a new challenge for all of us – distraction. In a workplace report by Udemy in 2018, 69% of people struggled to cope with distraction at work, and more than a third of millennials used their phones for personal

activities up to two hours during the workday. Social media and digital devices also distract us from face-toface conversations that are meaningful and contribute to our wellbeing.

mind, reduced stress and are happier. These changes take place through structural changes in the brain. And they do have a lasting effect on our lives as long as we sustain the practice.

How is mindfulness connected to our general wellbeing?

How does mindfulness help us in the workplace?

Research tells us that people who practice mindfulness consistently tend to have more positive states of

Mindfulness has become increasingly popular in workplaces. Organisations such as Google, eBay and General Mills have introduced

mindfulness to their staff. The stress reduction of mindfulness has a positive effect on productivity. Another effect of mindfulness is it allows people to respond to situations in workplaces with greater awareness and take a pause before they act. This helps in better decision making, innovation and supports strategic thinking in leadership.

How does it improve social interactions? When our quality of attention, gratitude and compassion is enhanced, social interactions naturally increase in value. We start noticing and appreciating others which leads to better social interactions. We start looking at others as human beings playing different roles rather than absolute roles. For example, the manager in your office also happens to be a mother with two kids. Perhaps striving to make ends meet. Seeing the human being behind these roles helps us to respond with compassion, empathy and kindness.

How does mindfulness help with our personal relationships? There is one pervasive trend that is happening globally. Couples and families are hooked to their smartphones. It has become a new kind of addiction. What mindfulness does is to help people put relationships in the front seat and recognise that as human beings we need human interaction.

How does mindfulness support our mental and physical health? There is abundant research

Mindfulness helped to reduce my stress and strengthen my resilience, and also helped me to be effective in my professional and personal life.

Ways to be mindful everyday Three minutes a day: One of the easiest ways to incorporate mindfulness in everyday living is to start a three-minute practice for two weeks and then gradually increase it. You could use mindfulness apps (like Headspace and Calm) or audio guides from YouTube.

in the last 30 years showing the positive effects on mental and physical health. The recorded positive effects are stress reduction, emotional regulation, prevention of depression relapse, adjunct treatment for bipolar disorder, reduction of addictive behaviours, resilience and dealing with chronic pain. Within a couple of weeks of practice, people usually start noticing these changes.

Who is mindfulness best for? We have worked with kids, teens and adults, and found astounding results. Mindfulness can be used as both a restorative tool as well as a performance tool. It works!

Incidental awareness: Mindfulness can be informal. You could practice it by chewing your first three mouthfuls at least 20 times when having your meals. Or start noticing the space and environment you are in, as if you were there for the first time. This brings in curiosity. Listen first: Another way is to listen to others for the sake of listening, rather than responding. Just paying attention to what others are saying and asking more questions with curiosity also helps develop mindfulness. centreformindfulness.sg

Mindfulness matters

Mindfulness can help reduce stress, boost creativity, improve attention, working-memory and concentration and strengthen relationships. It’s also been shown to manage depression, anxiety, chronic pain, suicidal ideation, addiction recovery and relapse prevention and eating disorders. September 2019

Keeping it Natural DR. SAIRUPA KRISHNAMURTI is a Naturopathic Doctor at City Osteopathy & Physiotherapy. She explains what naturopathy involves, and what it can do for you. What is naturopathy? Naturopathy is an integrative form of medicine that focuses on prevention, addressing the cause of the symptoms and promoting the natural healing properties of the body. Practitioners address problems at the source - using a combination of traditional medicine and modern science. Different therapies are chosen to treat both chronic and acute conditions. Over the past decade Naturopathic Medicine globally has become more medicalised and recognised as an integrative medicine.

Why were you drawn to this work? I suffered from eczema for many years and once I started seeing a Naturopathic Doctor and Ayurveda practitioner, my health changed and my skin healed. Most importantly, I absolutely fell in love with

I absolutely fell in love with this approach to healthcare; looking at the whole person, mind and body, and treating the root cause of disease.

this approach to healthcare; looking at the whole person, mind and body, and treating the root cause of disease. I’m also trained as a Yoga Teacher and Ayurveda Practitioner, so I’ve been working within the field of wellness for over a decade.

What sort of clients do you treat? I have a general family practice and treat babies, children of all ages, and their parents. I most often provide support for fertility, pregnancy and hormonal concerns. I treat both chronic (autoimmune disease, allergies, skin concerns, hair loss, and digestive concerns) and acute health issues (colds, coughs, flus).

What assessments do you make initially? After a thorough medical intake to understand a patient’s health history, I use lab work to investigate if a person has nutritional deficiencies, autoimmunity or excess inflammation. I may suggest more detailed lab studies and functional tests when needed. In a session, I use typical conventional medical exams, however, I also examine the tongue, nails and pulse (which demonstrate a lot about organ health from an eastern medicine framework).

What changes might a client have to make? One of my values as a naturopathic doctor is to support a patient to make changes at their own pace. Patient goals are discussed and documented in the first session, and we move towards those goals in a realistic and sustainable way. I find that committing to small daily health habits can make the most profound changes.

How does naturopathy uncover the underlying cause of illness? For me this means getting to know the patient’s health history, their lifestyle habits, nutrition, detox capabilities, sleep and stress. From there, we can understand the root causes of disease, such as previous life-traumas, digestive weakness, toxin burden, and so on. Once I understand possible root causes, I can provide focused support to help a person make lasting changes to benefit their overall health.

Do you often see burn out in expats? Expats are often extremely busy in their work and family life, juggling being parents without a support network close by. I often see expat patients that are overwhelmed with fatigue and stress. Naturopathic Medicine provides great support for expats that are wanting effective tools to better manage their stress.

How can naturopathy help with stress management? I use laboratory tests that help to identify imbalanced levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This helps me to prescribe the correct supplementation at the correct time of day to manage stress. I also investigate blood glucose and nutritional markers that may have an impact on responses to stress. I guide my patients with nutritional and food strategies to promote balanced energy and restorative sleep. All these tools can help a person to recover from burn out and also help to better manage stress. cityosteophysio.com sio.com

WELLNESS FAVES Favourite wellness practices? Walking out in nature, deep breathing, and laughter! Way you like to move in nature? Yoga in the Botanical Gardens. Favourite wellness app?

NATUROPATHY TOOLS Homeopathy:

This is the use of incredibly gentle natural substances in small dosages that help to invoke healing changes on both physical and energetic levels. I use homeopathy to treat everything from teething issues in babies, to food poisoning, hand, foot and mouth-disease, stress/anxiety and much more.

Botanical medicine:

This is the use of plants in the form of teas, tinctures, supplements, and powders. The chemical constituents of plants can be incredibly helpful for a diverse range of conditions.

Clinical nutrition:

Simply put - food as medicine can be a powerful tool to create lasting changes to a person’s health. I provide dietary guidelines, grocery lists and recipes to cater to allergies and intolerances.

I love the app CLUE for women to track their menstrual cycles. I use it a lot with patients. Favourite healing space? I absolutely love Canvass in Bukit Timah for yoga and art Classes.

PIP HARRY finds a spiritual wellness retreat in Koh Samui that offers guests a chance to disconnect, detox, and potentially even transform their lives.

T

o be honest, I wasn’t sure if I’d even make it to Kamalaya, a Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa resort located on Koh Samui’s peaceful south coast. Recently diagnosed with a painful spinal condition, I’ve been finding it a challenge to walk around the block, let alone bend myself into yoga poses or rise at dawn for a fitness class. Prior to arrival, I hurriedly checked the program box, ‘Relax & Renew’, thinking that their ‘newcomers to wellness’ program would be the gentlest entry point for my five-night stay.

ARRIVALS HALL After a short, direct flight from Singapore, I’m met at the airport, handed a cold towel and driven the 40 minutes out to the resort, accompanied by the sound of peaceful birdsong on the car stereo. Right away, I feel calmer. Speeding past busy tourist areas and markets, I arrive in the evening at the resort, nestled on a hillside in a lush Thai jungle. I’ll have to leave exploring for the morning. I’ve already had a Venti Starbucks coffee, waffle 44 anza

Kamalaya Sept19.indd 44

bikkies and an airline curry for dinner, so I knock back a super heathy purple welcome drink made with butterfly pea, coconut water and a squeeze of lime, and head for my luxurious digs – a spacious villa I suspect might be overlooking the ocean by the sound of waves that send me straight to sleep.

RISE AND SHINE Waking to burbling frogs, I raise the blinds and exhale. Kamalaya boasts its own white sand beach, pretty granite boulders rising from the blue sea, banyan trees, ponds topped with pink lotus flowers, swaying palms and serene swimming pools. A couple of friendly butterflies flap gently across my path as I make my way up the steep hill for breakfast. Quite simply, it’s paradise. The buffet at the main alfresco restaurant, Soma, is unlike anything I’ve ever seen; an explosion of colour and healing, healthy foods. There’s no greasy bacon or hash browns here. I grab a plate of fresh tropical fruits, and a couple of shots (kale, turmeric and a green concoction made out of a leafy herb called

gotu kola are soon to become my go-tos) Although some guests are on a ‘detox’ or ‘ideal weight’ menu, in general Kamalaya’s approach to nutrition ditches extreme dieting and promotes eating foods that nourish the mind, body and spirit. Their menu is extensive, seasonal, and features a variety of a la carte ‘healthy’ Thai classics, plant-based dishes, fish and some lean meats. Breakfast includes buckwheat and pumpkin pancakes, poached eggs, a sprawling salad bar, soups, nuts and seeds, and even

gluten free breads, cakes and croissants. Although this is the ideal place to kick a habit, I’m not ready to give up my decades’ long morning caffeine fix. I order a latte, enjoy a delicious bowl of bircher muesli and make my way to the wellness centre.

WELLNESS CONSULTATION Every guest at Kamalaya begins their stay with a wellness consultation. A nurse gives me a once over and performs a ‘body bio impedance analysis’, which measures my fat-to-lean-muscle September 2019 anza

ratio (not great) and my cellular health (pretty good). Then I meet with Emily Sarkies, a lovely, positive Australian naturopath, who puts me instantly at ease as we chat about my goals during my stay. They’re fairly modest: to kickstart a healthier lifestyle, and protect and strengthen my still fragile spine. I’m nervous and a little defensive, but she’s completely supportive, nonjudgemental and wise. I’m in good hands. After consulting the onsite physio team as to whether I could switch to the new ‘Structural Revival’ program, which is designed to realign the body, reduce tension, and rehabilitate injuries, I’m advised to stick with my original choice, which includes a slew of wellness therapies, alongside daily rotating activities. As well as individualised programs, Kamalaya offers a holistic activity schedule which includes aqua-aerobics, cooking classes, meditation, tea sharing, wellness workshops, stretching, yoga and even some offsite tours to temples and other local areas of interest. Some guests head off for a sunset sail and snorkel one evening and spot a rare blue stingray. Although I’m usually one for excursions, I opt to stay within the bubble of the resort, trying to focus on relaxing and renewing.

TREATMENT TIME Kamalaya takes cues from both Eastern and Western healing therapies which transcend the standard spa experience. Their world class team includes skilled massage therapists, doctors, physios, acupuncturists, nutrition experts, personal trainers, yogis, gurus and mentors. Every program includes heavenly daily treatments in the tranquil open-air wellness centre. I kick things off with a Lotus Blossom Scrub & Wrap, followed by a 90-minute Vital Essence Oil Massage. The therapists are some of the best I’ve ever 46 anza

Kamalaya Sept19.indd 46

encountered; intuitive, caring and discreet. I also try traditional Asian hand and foot massage, Indian head massage, far infared sauna (30 minutes in a wooden hot box) and an unusual Chi Nei Tsang massage of the stomach and internal organs. It’s the only treatment I find challenging (most guests do at first). The rest leave me in a state of deep relaxation. There’s plenty of ways to stay well here - I also visit the state-of-the-art gym, Pilates reformer studio, yoga pavilion overlooking the water, two swimming pools, hot pools, steam rooms, and even a monk’s cave. I tentatively step inside the small, spiritual space early one morning, lighting an incense stick and setting an intention for the day. I’m starting to find my bliss.

THE PEOPLE YOU MEET Perhaps the biggest surprise is how many fellow wellness warriors I connect with. I’m an introvert at heart, but at the long communal table, I share my meals with a group of fascinating people from all over the planet. Swapping stories over beautifully presented plates, tea and healthy mocktails is a joy – no wonder some guests return to Kamalaya for many years, each time gathering more friends and ideas for reinventing their lives. As I check out on my final day, I’ve miraculously swapped my morning coffee for mulberry tea, my back is in good shape, and I feel energised and ready for a busy period ahead. I’m farewelled by a new friend from Bhutan, who presses her contact details into my hand and waves me off. As I leave this magical place and head back to the urban jungle of Singapore, I can only hope I’m lucky enough to return one day. kamalaya.com

DIY Detox

ANZA member, JO MCKENNA made amends for an indulgent month vacationing across in Europe with a few DIY detox days at Tempat Senang Spa & Resort in Batam.

A

fter an indulgent vacation with my two boys and husband, across London, France, and Italy for a month this summer, I returned to Singapore exhausted and a little bit larger around the waist than I wanted. I decided it was time for a quick detox but I didn’t have much time to spare and wasn’t keen to spend a lot of money on flights or an expensive retreat. I knew about a little secluded spa just an hour ferry ride from Singapore called Tempat Senang Spa & Resort in Batam, Indonesia. I’d been there for a full day spa package (which includes six different treatments in one day) when I first arrived in Singapore a year ago. That day was a whirlwind and I remember thinking, “I must come back here for a night or two and take this all in.” 48 anza

DIYdetoxNEW.indd 48

Hoping to create my own personal detox, I made a reservation for three nights (approx. SGD $460, including a half day spa and breakfast every morning). A friendly voice on the phone, Dennis, helped me with every question I had: “Where do I catch the fastest ferry?” (Harbour Front). “Will someone pick me up?” (Yes, we have a free shuttle). “Do I need a visa?” (It depends on which passport you have). All my questions answered, I hopped on the ferry from Harbour Front in Singapore to Sekupang Terminal in Indonesia (return ticket SGD $49). On arrival at the spa I was handed a cool glass of lemongrass tea and sat down with a staff member to talk about what I was going to do for the next few days.

Wellness +travel

“Detox, read, write, repeat,” I replied. My plan was to kick off a healthy month of no alcohol, gluten or dairy and cut back on meat. Basically, eliminate the entire diet I’d been living on for the past month in Europe! We looked at the spa menu and picked three services for the next day and three for the day after that. I’d checked out the restaurant menu before I left, so I knew creating my own detox program would be easy with the cleansing juices, fruits and vegetables, and soups available. A side note for those not detoxing, the menu would make any rugby player happy with beef rendang, satay, lime chicken, fish cakes, nasi goreng, caesar salad and plenty more delicious, hearty options. Don’t get me started on the cocktail, beer, wine and dessert menus.

September 2019

14/8/19 10:42 AM

But, I’m here to detox so, next time! Tempat’s laidback, Bali-inspired vibe made it easy to wind down. I sat by the saltwater pool and read before having a

tom yum soup for dinner (to die for!) and headed to my cozy single room to relax (almost half the price of a double if you’re going solo). It was lights out by 9pm.

Day 1 I began the day with my favourite guided meditations on YouTube (something I‘d not done in a while). One of the chefs I met, Victoria, was genuinely excited to help me with my detox meal plan and talked me through the benefits of each juice. She prepared a plate of fruit and a green detox juice with tea. My half-day spa session then consisted of a Balinese massage, a peppermint body scrub, and a green tea and silk facial. I knew to drink gallons of water as I could practically feel the toxins melting away. Afterwards, I spent some time creating a menu and morning schedule for myself for the next month, so I had a plan to stick to when I got back to reality. School holidays can be tough on parents, due to the ample free time and lack of structure. For dinner I opted for the Vietnamese clear soup, which was delicious, and made me ask myself why I don’t have soup for dinner more often? A few more hours of relaxing, reading and writing by the pool and before I knew it, I was fast asleep. It’s no surprise that three spa services, in one day, will knock you out.

Day 2 A 20-minute yoga session and a little inspirational reading made for a peaceful start to my second day. A quote by Lori

Deschene, author of Tiny Buddha, Simple Wisdom For Life’s Hard Questions really hit home in that moment: “If you’re drained, you need a break. If you’re hurting you need your own compassion. And nothing will change for the better until you give yourself what you need.” My choice for self-care and compassion was the Lotus Package; foot reflexology, a Greek goddess hair mask, another Balinese body massage and a detoxifying mud wrap. For breakfast I sipped the Ulua Detox Smoothie (papaya, orange, yoghurt, lime – my favourite so far), fruit for lunch and Phnom Penh Noodle soup for dinner. Lights out at 9pm.

Day 3 By day three I was wide awake at 6am (highly unusual for me) and craving a substantial breakfast and caffeine. I ordered the “Early Riser’ (eggs, fruit, toast, coffee) and I enjoyed every single bite. Truth be told, I had one piece of toast. Shhhh! On the ferry ride back to Singapore, I felt like a whole new person (well, my shorts fit a bit better anyway). I was rested and ready to continue with a healthy diet for the rest of the month and feeling stronger spiritually and physically. If you’re in need of some holistic rejuvenation, you don’t have to wait for January or spend a fortune! Singapore is surrounded by many beautiful, hidden gem spas – just a short ferry or flight away. tempatsenang.com

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO THRIVE? What does it mean to thrive? KIM FORRESTER explores the meaning of this loaded word and offers tips for evolving and growing in today’s results driven world.

efore writing this column, I looked up the meaning of the word thrive: verb /θraiv/: to grow, develop, or be successful. But what does this mean? In our results-obsessed society, you can be forgiven for having an automatic and unconscious tendency to regard “thriving” as a personal goal; a desirable point of reference from which you will experience greater happiness, wellness and wealth. With this mindset — as with many concepts in our modern lives — the condition of thriving will be obtained by ticking the right boxes. If you sleep enough, eat well, exercise, choose positive thoughts (and so on …) you will eventually find yourself in a place of joyous prosperity and ease. Certainly, all of these lifestyle choices can help you thrive. But to focus on the attainment of these milestones is to ignore the most important, most fundamental, element of thriving: ongoing evolution and growth. Thriving is not a way-point on the map of personal development. It is the perpetual journey of growth — of expansion and adaptation — that allows you to venture further into a sense of authentic wellbeing. And this journey — this ability to thrive — can arise at any time in your life; at any point along your personal journey and regardless of the circumstances that currently surround you. You may be lost in the darkness of

depression but if you are inherently happier than you were yesterday, you are beginning to thrive. You may have suffered a long history of isolation or abuse but if your relationships are stronger and more supportive than they have ever been, you are beginning to thrive. If your environment is increasingly more conducive to growth; if your unconscious reactions and conscious choices are becoming healthier and more fulfilling; if you are more careful and compassionate with how you view yourself, you are already expanding beyond the nature of your past experience. You are thriving. But there is no judgement on how that will look in your world. There is no milestone that will mark your arrival into the realms of Those-Who-Thrive. There is simply an invitation for you to look at your life as it stands, right now, and ask yourself: Where am I not prospering? What areas of my life are no longer conducive for growth? What opinions do I hold about myself that are preventing me from stepping into greater wellness and joy? What changes can I make to the way I live my life that will afford me more freedom and contentment? And then take action on any of these factors and plant a new seed of potential in your life.

“This month our theme was architecture,” says BRENDAN PAGET. “We got some wonderful photos of structures from all over the globe. Some of the photos posted on the ANZA Click Facebook page also included edible architecture!”

REBECCA MARTIN PIPES “The Lloyd’s Building in London was designed by Richard Rogers and Partners; it has the lifts, ductwork and water pipes on the outside. (Richard Rogers also designed the Centre Pompidou in Paris.) I took this photo with my iPhone 7.”

ANNIE BAXTER GINGERBREAD HOUSE “This is the second house we made, the first was a little burned around the edges but was consumed by Boxing Day. This year the British architects in my family looked on quizzically. ‘What should I do about all the gaps in the walls?’ I asked the experts. ‘Just fill the holes with icing and call it a cob walled 16th century farmhouse,’ they replied.”

HEIDI HUTCHISON MARINA ONE “Every day I walk into the centre of Marina One and it never looks the same. The light, the colours and the angles always seem to change. It takes my breath away every time!” Interested in photography? We would love you to join our photowalks and discussions. T

ucked away in the elegant Six Senses Duxton heritage hotel lies this chic Chinese restaurant. With shades of yellow, black and gold, the opulent interiors are designed by acclaimed British designer Anousaka Hempel. The menu features authentic and reimagined Chinese dishes, with an emphasis on sustainability and wellness. Head Chef Sebastian Goh uses ingredients from viable sources, and where possible the restaurant supports local fisheries and farms. The philosophy of the dishes at Yellow Pot is balanced, clean and healthy eating, in line with the ideology of Six Senses properties around the globe. We begin our meal with the Chilled Organic Vineripened Tomatoes ($8) infused with “Li Hing” plum. The small skinned tomatoes are light and tangy and a nice palate cleanser. This is followed by the unusually meaty vegetarian dish, Lion’s Mane Mushrooms ($16) which I would swear was chicken in a blind tasting, and prawns, served in a light mayonnaise with fluffy bonito flakes ($18) Our dished are paired with a beautiful black Chinese tea, created for the restaurant by Yixing Xuan Teahouse, just around the corner. Roast Duck ($36) is Yellow Pot’s most famous dish, and it doesn’t disappoint; crispy skin and juicy meat, with a homemade tangy plum dipping sauce. My next favourite main is the Wok-seared Organic Grass-fed Beef Tenderloin ($38) tender cubes of braised beef, with flavours of peppercorn, honey and crisp garlic chips. Steamed Kühlbarra Barramundi ($32) hails from a local fish farm, a firm white fish with an Asian-style green pesto of scallion, ginger and coriander. To finish, we try the local festive dessert, Tang Yuan in Ginger Tea ($8) fragrant, warming ginger broth, with two floating rice balls – glutinous and filled with delicious nutty paste. VERDICT: Fresh, light and sustainable Chinese dishes that embrace clean and healthy cooking but lose none of their punchy flavours. What could be better?

L

ocated between Cook and Tras Streets – hence its moniker – the welcoming, cosy library at Six Senses Maxwell is home to some 3000 books. It also houses an elegant restaurant. Spearheaded by experienced chef, Ian Mancais, the menu has expanded from bar bites to a full lunch and dinner menu, inspired by Southern European cuisine. During our relaxed lunch we start with Alive & Inspired ($22), a colourful tossed salad with berries, avocado,

54 anza

mango and kale. It’s virtuous and delicious. The Vine Tomatoes & Mixed Melon ($22) follows; watermelon, tomatoes and burrata cheese, topped with shaved ice. The standout dish of the meal is the Baked Barramundi ($28) with fresh herbs, light Indian flavours and a tangy yogurt sauce. Steak Chimichurri ($55) is also great, served with asparagus, vineripened tomatoes and garlic. Local dishes are also on offer, at a very friendly price point. Iberico Pork Sate ($9) Nonya Style Chicken Meatballs ($9) are both excellent. The Camp Fire S’mores ($20) are served in a cloud of smoke, and this baked Alaska style dessert is seriously good – with layers of chocolate ganache, ice cream and meringue.

Because even the healthiest eater deserves a sweet treat from time to time. VERDICT: With a leaning towards light, seasonal and organic plates, Chef Mancais is a huge talent, and his food is superbly done.

MOONCAKE MEMORIES

TUCKE R B OX

Fairmont Singapore

RAELENE TAN recalls her mooncake memories, and the legends surrounding this treasured festive pastry.

V

ivid memories come to mind at this time of year, of my (late) motherin-law mesmerising her daughters and daughters-in-law with stories of romance and beauty, all focusing on the moon. Sitting in the peaceful garden at dusk, under a full moon, sipping Chinese tea and munching on mooncakes while listening to stories and lilting poems have left a deep impression. By the light of the large moon, my young nephews and nieces would excitedly parade around the lawn with colourful lanterns, reveling in the festive mood. The Mooncake Festival will be celebrated this year on Friday 13 September, being the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

LEGENDS

Born in Adelaide, Raelene Tan is an etiquette consultant and a food and travel writer. She has authored five books and has been a regular guest on radio and television.

An ancient story tells of how secret messages were hidden in mooncakes, to be distributed amongst the Chinese people who were planning action against their much-feared rulers. To signal the start of the action, lanterns were lit and success was eventually hard won. Another legend tells of the much-admired lady in the moon, Empress Chang-E, who saved her people from the tyrannical rule of her husband Emperor Hou Yi, who had stolen the elixir of life so that he could live and rule forever. Chang-E did this by drinking the elixir herself and floating up to the moon, where she’s still regarded as the beautiful lady in the moon.

MOONCAKES Mooncakes are small and round, or oval, not only to resemble the moon, but also because the circular shape signifies

completeness. Traditional types are the Cantonese-style with thin golden brown pastry crusts, and the Teochew-style with light, flaky pastry, as well as the modern snow-skin varieties using glutinous riceflour. Fillings include red beans, black beans, mung beans and the ever-popular lotus seed paste with melon seeds. Salted duck’s-egg yolks are often added to Cantonese-style mooncakes. Considered delicacies, the most popular contain four egg yolks, so that when the mooncakes are quartered, each piece will have a whole egg yolk, representing the moon. Mooncakes are very rich, best enjoyed as a small wedge, paired with Chinese tea. Cut the mooncake in quarters, so as not to slice directly through the ‘moon’.

TRADITIONAL FARE Other traditional fare includes pomelos (round, like the moon), groundnuts (considered the flower of life), yams (to protect the family) and Chinese tea. Children enjoy wheat-flour cakes in the shape of animals, nestled in small colourful baskets. These can be seen a-plenty in Chinatown in the days leading up to the Festival. Ling ge is a hard, black nut, shaped like a bull’s head complete with sharp horns. The nut is cracked open so that the white, crunchy flesh can be enjoyed. Items such as mooncakes and pomelos are given in pairs or even numbers when presented as gifts.

TANDOORI DUET OF ASPARAGUS Milind Sovani, Corporate Chef at Indian fine diner, RANG MAHAL shares a healthy, flavourpacked vegetarian dish. INGREDIENTS (Serves 2)

4 Green asparagus 4 White asparagus ¼ cup Grated cheddar cheese

TANDOORI MARINADE:

½ cup Thick fat-free yoghurt 1 tsp Ginger & garlic paste ½ tsp Garam masala powder ½ tsp Cumin powder ¼ tsp Turmeric powder Salt to taste METHOD: 1. Clean all the asparagus and lightly blanch them in boiling water for a minute. Remove, drain and set aside. 2. Mix all the marinade ingredients to a smooth paste. 3. Marinate both green and white asparagus and leave them for 30 minutes. 4. Arrange the asparagus on skewers and bake on a buttered tray at 180 °C for 12-15 minutes. 5. Dust them with grated cheddar cheese and leave it in the oven for 3 minutes more. 6. Remove from oven and serve hot. 7. Best enjoyed with a mint chutney.

“Asparagus is one of the healthiest and most delicate vegetables, which needs a subtle cooking technique. I prefer using both white and green asparagus together as they create a unique combination of flavours with loads of nutrients. Indian food is perceived to be spicy and heavy, but at Rang Mahal we ensure that our dishes are healthy and not overloaded with spices.” - MILIND SOVANI, CORPORATE CHEF, RANG MAHAL 56 anza

DRINK Meet the Bartender BRETT BAYLY started his career in a country themed pub in Adelaide and was recently named brand ambassador of whisky giant Glenfiddich for Southeast Asia. The laidback ‘Third Culture Kid’ and citizen of the world explains why the role is a perfect fit.

Where did you get your start in bartending? At a pub in Adelaide when I was 18 called The Woolshed and loved it! We had a mechanical bull, a rotating dancefloor, and Bundy & Coke on tap! Getting paid to pull pints, and talk to people over the bar, I thought it was a dream job! I properly got into cocktail bartending after a short stint in Sydney, probably really kicking into it when I was about 21, at a restaurant called Mesa Lunga.

Favourite Singapore bar? I knew you were going to ask me to pick favourites! I love the guys at Employees Only, they really looked after me when I first moved here, but I have to give special mention to 28 HongKong Street, Idlewild at the InterContinental, and who doesn’t love a good rager at Skinny’s?

Favourite hangover cure? A solid gym session, followed by a sauna, and green tea! I wish, more likely Netflix and pizza, with as much water as my body can handle. Oh, and painkillers!

You went to a school in Manila? I did! I was lucky that my folks were both teachers at the International School Manila, so my brother and I went there also. Before that we were in Brunei. I’ve grown up in South East Asia, so I have a “Third Culture Kid” mentality.

Where can we find a fantastic whisky? I always recommend people explore, rather than just go to their safety net. There are incredible expressions coming from all around the world, not just Scotch whisky like Glenfiddich, but great Indian whisky, amazing Swedish whisky.

Favourite way to drink whiskey? With a deep breath, and a small side of water to dilute, it really depends on the whisky. I am on the Highball train at the moment! One-part Glenfiddich 12-year-old, to three parts sparkling or soda water, and a slice of citrus. Perfect.

Getting paid to pull pints, and talk to people over the bar, I thought it was a dream job!

SPIRITUAL WELLNESS LEE CARSLEY offers tips for checking in with your spiritual wellbeing.

uch is made of our physical and mental wellness, but how much time and thought have you given recently to your spiritual health? Our spiritual ‘wellness’ determines how long we live, how ‘well’ we live, and how much we contribute to society. Brene Brown is an American research professor whose TED talk is the most viewed of all time - 40 million hits. Her research grew out of a passion to discover why we have a depression pandemic, across all cultures, all classes, at a time when the world has never seen so many options for happiness. She believes that we have an innate desire to connect, to need others and to help others. When we sublimate, hide or deny either needing help or giving it, it literally eats away at our spiritual wellness. Brown’s research came up with this theme: that in order to practice spiritual wellness, we need to feel compassion (complete caring for others), with boundaries of steel. We must practice compassion, being clear about what is and is not okay, and make ourselves and others stick to the boundaries. Here are the ‘boundaries of steel’ that she refers to.

1

We are all doing the best we can

Do you believe people are doing the best

they can? Think of a person who drives you crazy - from mild irritation to pull your hair out crazy – are they really doing the best they can? Yes, they are. And so are you. We often haven’t scratched the surface of their stories and what they’re currently dealing with. If revealed, these stories might just bring us to our knees. I won’t tell you my shame stories unless I feel safe, and we don’t ask people about theirs much either.

2

Receive help as much as you give help

Need is the most beautiful contact between humans. Many of us are willing to extend a helping hand. But how often do we ask for help? You would think the universal nature of struggle would make it easier for all of us to ask for help, but in a culture of scarcity and perfectionism, there can still be so much shame in reaching out, especially if we are not raised to understand the irreducible nature of human need. We encourage our children to ask for help, but if they don’t see us reaching out for support and modelling that behaviour, they will instead attach value to never needing help. Yoga acts as a reminder of these magic ingredients for spiritual wellness, while also working with the physical and mental layers. Truly bringing together all elements of wellness.

Venues will be confirmed closer to the event dates, but the plan is to meet up every second month. Look out for events on 9 October and 11 December this year. IS ANY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY? AFL

BIG WINS FOR THE WOMBATS It’s time for the AFL Asia Championships for the ANZA Singapore Wombats. Can the Wombats and Wombettes go all the way? Recent tuneup games show the teams are trending in the right direction, reports BEN ADAMS.

PAYBACK WIN OVER INDONESIA Over recent years the Wombat’s rivalry with the Jakarta Bintangs has intensified as they have started to field a combined Indonesia team called the Indonesia Volcanoes. This means that a host of former AFL, WAFL and VFL players living in Bali are suddenly combining with the best local and expat talent that Jakarta has to offer. This combination proved insurmountable in early July as a small contingent of Wombats headed over to Jakarta. Touring in Asia can be hard at times, with work and family commitments getting in the way, and this was again the case as only 12 fit Wombats were available for the match. The Volcanoes graciously loaned the Bats a few players, but less graciously made it 16 a side and 20-minute quarters. A semi-bright start saw the Bats have a few pings at goal for little reward, before injuries and the heat took their toll. The floodgates well and truly opened, and the Bats went down with one of our worst defeats in a long time, losing 146-4. Two weeks later it was a very different story as a similarly short-handed Volcanoes team arrived on our sunny shores. Six Wombat regulars made their way over to the opposition ranks to assist with their numbers, and a great game was played out in a 14 a side format. “Payback” had been the title of the match poster heading into the weekend, and it became more than a cheeky marketing slogan, it became reality. The Wombats romped over the undermanned Indonesia volcanos 121-33 to extract a modicum of revenge for the mauling in Jakarta. Spearhead Adam Becis finally emerged from the shadows to slot seven goals for the wombats, while numerous midfielders snuck in one or two goals each. 62 anza

AFL Sept19.indd 62

The Goal of the Year award will be hotly contested with Jason Yap slotting an outrageous snap from an impossible angle, and “Goal Dave” Beattie selling some candy to live up to his nickname.

CHANGI CUP The Wombats defeated the Malaysian Warriors on their home deck on 3 August by the massive score line of 23.13 151 to 10.3.63 in wet conditions, and retained the Changi Cup! Ryan Brock was red hot up forward with 8 goals in his final game for the Bats, while Gabriel Irons kicked 7 rotating through the midfield and forward line (and keeping his place at the top of the goal kicking ladder).

AFL ASIA CHAMPIONSHIPS This year the Champs tournament is held much earlier than normal – 31 Aug. Hopefully as you read this there’s a bunch of Wombats and Wombettes returning from Thailand with a load of silverware! This will mark the end of our season, but there’ll still be casual park footy kicks and running sessions, as well as plenty of footy watching at Dallas, so get in touch to get involved.

ROYAL WOMBAT BALL

The highlight of the Wombat social calendar, the Royal Wombat Ball is scheduled for 5 October at the Park Royal on Beach Road. Check out Wombat social media for details on tickets and entertainment.

2019 DONOSTI CUP

ANZA Soccer Coach MARCEL DE BRUIJCKERE reports on the team’s recent trip to Spain for the 2019 Donosti Cup.

I

n the second week of July, 16 players aged 15 to 17, along with 14 supporters and ANZA Soccer Head Coach Yakob Hashim, travelled to Europe to play in the 2019 Donosti Cup in San Sebastian, Spain. Following seven practice matches in May and early June, the boys were eager to test themselves against some very strong international teams. This was the third summer in a row that this age group was able to play in Spain and the second time ANZA Soccer participated in the Donosti Cup. Last year we reached the semifinals of the Plate competition, and with a stronger and bigger squad this year, we were quietly confident that we could do even better. A huge effort coordinated by co-team manager Emily Lim raised SGD$10,000 - enough funds to partially sponsor six local players to be part of the tournament squad.

History and culture

The Donosti Cup has been held for more than 25 years. 641 teams from 27 countries participated in the 2019 Donosti Cup, with 52 teams in the B16 age group. It’s the fourth largest international youth soccer tournament in the world. San Sebastian (also known as Donostia) is one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Europe and is considered a culinary capital. The location guaranteed that the tournament would not only be a 64 anza

Soccer Sept19.indd 64

great experience for the players, but also for their parents and other supporters travelling with them.

Time to play

In front of a crowd of around 10,000, the team paraded at the Monday evening Opening Ceremony in the stadium of Real Sociedad, proudly representing ANZA Soccer and Singapore. The boys played three group matches from Monday through Wednesday. Our first opponents, from Tarragona, Spain, proved too strong, resulting in a 3–1 loss against a team that went on to reach the Cup semi-finals. On Tuesday, we played a must-win match versus Steel United from California, USA. The teams were equally matched, with ANZA having the majority of possession and better chances. Neither luck nor the referees were on our side. Striker Gabri headed on a header by captain Laken from a free-kick by vice-captain Fazli, but was called off-side with no VAR to disprove the linesman’s call. We ended up losing 1–0 from an unlucky goal. The third match was convincingly won with 4–1 against a Basque team, Sanse, including a hat trick by Tadeu. This earned us a bye in the Plate Round of 32 on Thursday morning. Full of confidence, the team started its Round of 16 Plate match against Maria Reina Eskola, another Basque team. This was a physical team that earned themselves a red card just

September 2019

halfway through the first half. Nevertheless, they scored a goal after fouling our goalie Philippe in his 6-yard area deep in the second half. Shortly after this, we were given an undeserved penalty which we did not convert, and an all-out attack in the final five minutes also did not result in a goal. Whilst again we had created more chances against an equal opponent, we failed to convert them and were knocked out of the Plate earlier than we had hoped.

Team bonding

Emily Lim and Johanna Coderre

Playing with a tournament squad, of which only seven out of 16 had played together the prior season, proved a handicap against squads that have played multiple seasons together as a team. However, despite the disappointment of being knocked out, the ANZA Soccer team and its supporters had a great week. Lots of team bonding on the beach, in the restaurants of San Sebastian, and during the Friday night Closing Party, as well as mingling with other boys’ and girls’ teams from all over the world, made the 2019 Donasti Tournament an unforgettable experience. Are we going again next summer? Time will tell if this age group (or one year older!) will have the appetite to play in the B18s next year. We do know that our Matildas teams have plans to go, and based on our experiences, we highly recommend making the effort! September 2019 anza

MEET COACH HEATH! HEATH HANSELL, a first time ANZA netball coach talks about his experience coaching the youngest ANZA Netball group, the 6-yearolds! Heath explains how it is a rewarding experience to volunteer as a coach and spend quality active time with your children. How did you get into coaching ANZA Netball?

What do you enjoy about coaching? As a dad who spends a lot of time in the office and many evenings on calls, being a coach last season gave me the chance to spend some quality time with my youngest daughter, Zehara. ANZA Netball provides excellent training and support and I had a lot of fun trying to share that with the girls.

How did the U6 netball skills progress? During the first few weeks of training I had the girls lined up in an arc and would pass the ball to each and they would return the pass back to me. I vividly remember one of the girls being nervous about catching the ball and when the ball was passed to her, she dropped it. As a team we encouraged her to try again and then on her third attempt she caught it, hooray! As the season progressed the girls went from barely catching the ball to passing what they called “bullet passes”. For such young girls they were able to pass accurately, fast and were beginning to pre-empt where a player was headed. When we started playing actual netball games, the girls were all running in the same direction, however by the end of the season they

66 anza

netballNEW.indd 66

were spread out, marking the opposite player and passing the ball well.

What do the girls enjoy the most in their netball sessions? Spending regular time together as a team, learning new skills and developing friendships that they will hopefully retain over the years to come. They also get to play some fun games that are teaching them netball skills without them realising. There are girls from a range of backgrounds and they don’t all go to school together, so it is a good opportunity for them make new friends.

What does your daughter think about her dad coaching netball? Zehara thinks that it’s awesome having dad coach her at netball, although, she does know that this has meant she can’t muck around during the training! She thinks netball is a lot of fun and always wants to win the player of the week trophy.

ANZA Netball’s season kicks off on Saturday, 7 September, running through to 21 March 2020. anza.org.sg/sports/netball

Story by Michelle Adamson

I wanted to put my three daughters into a team sport that was going to challenge them from both a skills and an athletic perspective. I do have some family history with netball, as my younger sisters used to play netball for Australia, so we signed our daughters up for netball after moving to Singapore. And even though all I had done previously was cut the oranges, after some gentle persuasion from the ANZA Netball Committee, I signed up to be a coach. Having three kids at the same location on a Saturday really provides a great opportunity to actively get involved with ANZA netball and help out.

GREAT SCOTT! Meet ADAM SCOTT, Membership Director and member of the ANZA Cycling Committee.

What brought you to Singapore? I’m originally from the UK and moved to Singapore at the start of 2015 for work. I’ve been away from “home” for 13 years now, having spent time in Europe, the US and Japan, it’s hard to say where home is.

Tell us bit about your cycling background…

I started cycling as a youngster. The first bike I had was a Raleigh Chopper, followed by my first road bike at around age seven. I enjoyed cycling around the countryside with my father and the conversations we had with our neighbour who was an ex-semi-Pro cyclist in the 1960s and 70s. In my early adult years, I dabbled in some mountain biking, but never really connected. I got back into club cycling about 13 years ago when I moved from the UK and really wanted a hobby that allowed me to keep fitter and meet other people.

How did you find out about ANZA Cycling?

A colleague suggested I join ANZA 68 anza

Cycling Sept19 OFFICE.indd 68

Cycling when I first moved to Singapore. A couple of months after we arrived in Singapore my wife and I went along to the regular Newcomers’ Induction Ride. We were so impressed by the organisation and welcome that we received that we signed up that afternoon.

Which rides would we usually find you on? A Saturday Kranji (70km) or a Sunday Mandai (55km), and the monthly Newcomers’ Induction Ride (25km).

Have you seen any changes in the club?

It’s continued to grow and become a more slick operation under the capable guidance of a dedicated volunteer committee. Participation has gone up, with new ride opportunities being posted every week. The club now has over 400 members, a great many of whom lead rides, and organise trips away.

What has been your most memorable moment?

The 2016 trip to Taiwan, without a doubt. It was so much fun to go with a great group of people and cycle in the high mountains on some very famous passes. Even if it did mean getting some really cold hands on the descent of Wuling in freezing rain.

What advice would you give people who are considering joining up? First, don’t be shy. Come along to a newcomers’ ride, held on the first Saturday of every month. This isn‘t a beginner’s ride, but an opportunity for prospective members to find out how we roll as group, learn the road rules and see if they like the club. The ride meets outside the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at 583 Orchard Road at 5.30am and ends at the Botanic Gardens, ready for our regular rides that leave at 7am. All the regular rides end at the Dimbulah Coffee at Marina Bay Financial Centre for a complimentary breakfast and coffee for members and newcomers (first Saturday of the month only). Details are at anza. org.sg/sports/cycling.

Chase away the back to school blues at ANZA Athletics Are you back to school and feeling a little blue that summer vacation is over? We hear you! Signing up for ANZA Athletics is the perfect antidote writes GEORGINA HOCKLEY…

W

e can’t think of a better way to jump into the school term than to try a new sport, meet new friends and have a lot of fun along the way. In keeping with this month’s wellness theme, ANZA Athletics is bound to make your kids feel great - mind, body and soul. There might just be a little something to make the parents feel good about too…

BODY One of the most undersold benefits of athletics is how many different types of events and skills are on offer. ANZA Athletics kids work muscles they didn’t even know they had running, throwing and leaping around the track and field. By the end of the session everyone is red, sweaty and smiling after a sensational workout.

MIND Research shows the important role physical activity plays in improving mental health. Kids are no exception with the old adage ringing true – active kids are happy kids. And let’s not forget the mental muscle they’ll flex while concentrating on learning new skills and sporting rules. The technique for throwing a discus, measuring a long jump or clearing a hurdle is harder than it looks! Determination and resilience is essential. Remembering their last record also becomes quite important as they strive to beat their personal best each week.

SOUL One of the most uplifting sights over the course of the season is watching friendships blossom at ANZA Athletics. With age categories split into girls and boys, the kids get to know their group well very quickly. Each Friday kids bound over to their 70 anza

Athletics1.indd 70

friends to catch up on their week, before cheering each other on. It’s heart-warming stuff.

PARENTS WIN, TOO ANZA Athletics is a wonderful way for parents to meet new people, which is important in our transient expat population. It’s not a drop off and retreat into your phone type of event. Parents are actively involved every step of the way as timekeepers, team leaders and place givers. The kids’ excitement is infectious. So what are you waiting for? Sign up today and discover just how fabulous the whole family will feel joining the ANZA Athletics community!

MICHAEL KLIM

Olympic, World and Commonwealth Gold medallist and founder of skin company Milk and Co, MICHAEL KLIM is based in Bali, where he keeps active with surfing, weights, yoga, cardio, and of course, swimming! He talks to Rebecca Foreman about life after competitive swimming. What’s your connection to Singapore? I live in Bali because my kids are there but throughout my entire life I’ve always visited Singapore. I spent a lot of time training there when I was with the Australian swim team, alongside Singaporean swimmers. I love training in hot climates so Singapore has always been one of my favourite places, the facilities are incredible and swimming is highly regarded there. I’ve helped with the local school swimming programmes and was involved with the Youth Olympics recently. I’ve run many swim clinics at the Australian International School. How did you make the decision to stop swimming competitively? It was an internal battle, mentally I wanted to keep going but I came to the tough realisation that my body just wasn’t responding to stay on top of the game and compete with injury-free youngsters. After Athens, I was 27 and it all started going pear shaped with injuries. Swimming is tough on your body, you can be doing up to 6000 shoulder rotations a day. Tell us about life after winning Gold at the Olympics? By 2007 I had two kids and had started my skin care company Milk and Co. and I realised I wasn’t scared about life after

I still had a huge passion for exercise but wanted to push my body beyond just the clock. sport. I still had a huge passion for exercise but wanted to push my body beyond just the clock. Then in 2010, I decided to swim again and got back to the same level of fitness. I proved to myself that I could achieve a high level with a good balance, obviously my ex-wife Lindy and my parents were really supportive. But I missed the swim team by a couple of spots. I wasn’t bitter or angry though, I was happy with the process of getting back to the same fitness at 35 years of age, as when I was 27. My kids got to see what it takes to train and compete at the highest level. They saw what dedication means. Would you like to see your children achieve sporting greatness? More than anything I want my kids to find something they are passionate

about. They love the water, tennis, swimming, and surfing. I’d imagine as time goes on they’ll start to focus more specifically on an activity. It’s so easy to start something and then quit. I see this a lot. I want my kids to be consistent and have a drive towards their goals. What makes a great dad? I’ve found a good balance recently. I think perhaps because my kids respect my wisdom (laughs). I believe it all comes down to communication and finding a fine line between being authoritarian and clear, with open lines of communication. They respect me for being authoritarian but also for guiding them in the right direction. And yet my kids still want to have fun with me which is also a big tick. milkandco.com.au
