Dear Readers,

If my parents were still alive, they would be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. I know there would have been a big party, and I would get to hear all their stories of their wedding day. I know that when they got married in Vermont on Jan. 8, 1972, the heaters broke in the church, and everyone wore coats. My maternal grandmother slipped on a patch of ice and broke her ankle. She attended the wedding in a wheelchair just after surgery. I know what their cake looked like placed atop tall clear tubes filled with green ivy. And thanks to a newspaper clipping I found when my mom died, I know who her bridesmaids were, that they wore dresses of purple crushed velvet and that my parents honeymooned in New York City. I have original oil paintings on my walls that were bought during that trip. I have her wedding dress with the high collar and poofy sleeves along with my paternal grandmother’s silk dress from her wedding in the 1940s. I even have the cake topper from my parents’ wedding and the silk floral bouquet from my maternal grandmother’s wedding tucked away in storage. I love having these tangible reminders, along with their wedding album. Although I have not walked down an aisle in a white dress yet, I have been with my soulmate, Craig for 22 beautiful years. And I have officiated and directed weddings for over 25 years. I live vicariously through my parents’ wedding memories and each and every bride and groom I work with. So the annual bridal issue of Her Magazine always holds a special place in my heart. This year’s cover pair are Ashley and Landon Toler, who were married this past fall in Farmville. I was honored to officiate their wedding and manage their event. Not only will you get to meet them and enjoy photos and highlights from their special day, you will also meet four additional married couples, who have been together from 4 to 37 years, as they offer advice for new couples about to tie the knot. So whether you have been married months, years, or decades, I wish you a thousand happily every afters.

t’s a golden sun-filled day on September 4, 2021 at May-Lew Farm, a historical plantation dating back to 1830 located three miles west of Farmville, North Carolina on NC Hwy 121. This lush and dreamy impressive venue is steeped in history and features endless fields of green grass, canopies of old trees, rustic barns, a plantation house, pool, expansive barn for events and additional amenities including a pond, and several additional homes. On this day in September, it will be the backdrop as two lovebirds, Ashley Beaman & Landon Toler will say “I Do” in front of 150 family and friends. Vows will be said, rings exchanged, a kiss to seal the deal followed by a reception, toast, cake cutting, dancing and ending the evening with a spectacular fireworks display. But, this love story starts way back when Ashley and Landon met in high school. Like all love stories, there is a meet-cute where boy meets girl, girls like boy and then they fall in love. He proposes, they marry and then live happily ever after. I had the pleasure of both officiating and directing this wedding and it was a beautiful event from start to finish that sparkled and shined from the love these two share to the candles that flickered on the tables to the fireworks in the night sky. I asked Ashley and Landon to tell us where their love story began and how serendipitous that it all started at Disney World. Here is their happily every after story.

Where did you first meet?

While it is true that Landon and I first met in high school (in 2012), I honestly don’t remember ever talking to him. He loves to tell the story that he saw me on Easter break at Disney World. He literally spotted me out of all the people at Disney! When he came back to school the next week, he tried to talk to me and tell me he saw me in Disney but apparently I did not answer. His friend jokingly told him that I was out of his league! It was only when I came home on my first break from college that I agreed to go out with him, and we have been together ever since! We ended up visiting Disney World together a couple of years later.

What was your first impression of each other?

Ashley

Landon

My first impression of Landon was that he had a good heart.

My first impression of Ashley was that she was stunning.

Where was your first date?

Our first date was at the movie theater. We went to dinner and then watched a movie. We had a great time, and I remember laughing the whole way home.

Landon, how did you propose?

I knew I wanted to propose to Ashley for a long time. I went and bought a ring in May 2020, and I was waiting for the right moment to pop the question. I was going on the Beaman family vacation to Sarasota, Florida, in July. So, I decided to ask Ashley’s dad for Ashley’s hand in marriage and planned the proposal to happen on the vacation. When we went on the vacation, I got a hotel room separate from where we were staying and decorated it with rose petals that led to a rose petal heart. In the middle of the heart I wrote a letter that told her to meet me on the beach. She then came out to where I was waiting on the beach. I then got down on one knee and asked the love of my life to marry me. And she said yes!

Ashley, what was your favorite part about planning the wedding, especially during a pandemic?

One of my favorite parts of wedding planning was dress shopping. Due to the pandemic, I was only allowed to bring two people with me. At first I was bummed, but it ended up being one of the best experiences with my mom and sister. We all three cried happy tears when I walked out in my dress.

When did you get married?

We were married on Sept. 4, 2021, at May-Lew Farm in Farmville.

What was your favorite moment of your wedding?

Ashley Saying our vows to each other

Where did you honeymoon? We went on our honeymoon to

St. Lucia. Traveling during the pandemic looked a lot different, but we had the best time. Our resort had fewer people than normal, which was super nice and intimate. We were catered to and even had a wine tasting event to ourselves.

What is the best part about being married so far?

Ashley

Landon

Experiencing our first Christmas together married

All the firsts

If you had to describe your marriage in three words, what would those words be?

Ashley Happy, caring, loving

Landon Loving, caring, Fun

Where do you see yourself as a married couple in the next five years?

We hope in the next five years to have children.

What advice would you give to brides currently planning their wedding in a still uncertain time?

My advice is don’t stress over the small stuff. Live out every moment of the process to the fullest. Spend a little extra to get the perfect hair, makeup and flowers. I’m sure glad I did!

Anything you would have done differently?

I wouldn't change a thing. Everything was perfect and looking back on the photos now brings such joy and happiness.

Joe & Elaine Hughes MARRIED 37 YEARS

LASTING LOVE SPOTLIGHT

How did you meet? JOE: At St. Michael’s Church in Cary. I was working the whole year of 1982/83, Elaine started working in January of 1983. EL AINE: Joe was was studying to be a priest. I took a semester off from college and was working two jobs to save money for a car. One evening I was working in the rectory office and Joe asked me if I knew where a specific movie theater was located. I did, but rather than giving the directions, we ended up going to the movie together. Afterwards we went to Darryl’s Restaurant in downtown Raleigh and talked for a couple hours. This became our routine, movie and Darryl’s; we got to know each other really well and quickly fell in love. When did you get married? Aug. 4, 1984, in Cary What was your favorite moment of your wedding? ELAINE: Walking down the aisle out of the church. I was so happy and proud to be his wife! It felt like I was living a fairy tale! JOE: When I got to kiss the bride! Tell us about your family now? We have no pets due to Elaine’s allergies. We tried many years ago, but after a week with the puppy it was clear one week was long enough. After three miscarriages, we were blessed with our incredible son, Joe-Joe in July of 1994. He is our miracle baby and is abundantly loved. What is the best part about being married? ELAINE: Sharing life (the good and the bad) with my best friend. JOE: Having someone to share the highs and lows of life with. As we continue to get to know each other better, we grow closer than we could have imagined back in 1984. What is the secret to a lasting and successful marriage? ELAINE: Communication, especially honest communication. The times in our life where we have found ourselves struggling and snapping at each other have also been the times we were wrapped up in our own individual lives and not sharing what’s happening with one another. JOE: Honesty, humility, being willing to say you are sorry, keep growing. We like to do things together, but both have individual interests we pursue as well. If you could give newly married couples a few words of advice, what would that be? EL AINE: Don’t go to bed upset with one another. Your relationship is always worth the time it takes to work out any issues the two of you are experiencing. Not only will you get a better night’s sleep and wake up happier, but you will also grow a new level of respect and understanding for one another, which leads to a deeper love. The day we got married I thought there was no way I could love him more. As I look back now, 37 ½ years later, we were just scratching the surface back then. The depth of our love has matured and grown exponentially with each passing year. I am truly blessed! JOE: Be humble. You are with someone who will look at things very differently than you do. Listen to what they have to say and try to understand.

G.Todd & Diane Taylor MARRIED 16 YEARS

LASTING LOVE SPOTLIGHT

How did you meet? We met at a jazz club named Jazz in the City in Greenville during Thanksgiving weekend in 2003. When did you get married? We had a destination wedding. We married on Nov. 12, 2005, at Sunset Beach Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica with 100 of our family and friends as witnesses. At that time, it was the largest destination wedding that resort had. What was your favorite moment of your wedding? DIANE: It was an absolute perfect day, but my favorite part was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing G smile and wait patiently for me to join him. G. TODD: I’ll never forget the moment I saw her walking down the aisle. It all hit me at once. She was absolutely beautiful, and I knew what was about to happen and was so at peace and comfortable with my decision. This person being presented to me, the woman I chose, was going to be my forever love partner. Tell us about your family now: We are the proud parents of two amazing children, Morgan Elizabeth,12, and Garrett M. Jr., 10. We are also grateful for our family dog Rakim (Rock). What is the best part about being married? DIANE: The best part of being married is having someone on the planet that knows me, understands me and loves me in spite of my flaws. Someone committed to helping me be the best version of myself. Someone committed to providing and protecting me. Someone to share wins and disappointments with. Someone to plan and execute with. G. TODD: The best part of marriage is having somebody there that always has my back. She provides never ending love and support. We are there for each other. We are there to counsel, to console, to create, to encourage and to love. What is the secret to a lasting and successful marriage? DIANE: The secret to a lasting and successful marriage is to practice the art of forgiveness every day. It’s impossible to be married and not eventually offend the person you’ve promised to love forever. However, the offense should not win. The forgiveness of the offense allows you to continue to grow together and create a strong foundation that will not falter. G. TODD: The secret to a lasting and successful marriage is definitely communication. Absolutely nothing works until you can figure out how to get through things and talk about them as they happen. Effective communication isn’t just what you say, but how you say it. If you could give newly married couples a few words of advice, what would that be? DIANE: My advice to a newly married couple is to remember to be friends, practice forgiving your spouse, continue to date, communicate and maintain intimacy. G. TODD: Ignore social media. Ignore standards and outside influences imposed on your relationship. No two marriages are alike; find what works for the two of you. Expect change because that’s the only constant. Be willing to learn about each other every day. People evolve, so never forget what’s behind the commitment. You both came together to create a better life for you both and your family for generations to come. Don’t forget your mission.

HEALTH

HEALTHY EATING HABITS FOR BRIDES TO-BE 14

A

BY ELIZABETH MILTON

fter living in North Carolina for almost ten years, I have seen that there is such a wide variety of places to explore and better yet-host a wedding. Whether it be on a hiking trail with waterfalls, in the scenic mountains, along the shore of a family lake house, or on the crystal coast beaches, there are so many beautiful locations North Carolina has to offer for your big day. However, location isn’t the only thing brides to-be have on their plate! After deciding on the perfect venue, there are many more details to consider, some of which may be stressful. For example, some may think “I need to eat healthy and workout regularly to make sure my dress fits on the big day”. With all of the celebrations happening throughout the planning process, some may find this to be a bit of a challenge. As a Registered Dietitian, I try to plan healthy meals and snacks but also make sure they are tasty and easy to prepare, especially during busy seasons of life. One of my favorite go-to meals is a Turkey Ranch Club Wrap. Wraps are a quick and yummy lunch idea and can easily be paired with fresh fruit or vegetables for a busy bride-to-be. Eating this quick and easy meal is a great way to refuel your body with vitamins and minerals to keep you energized! Wherever you are, take time to enjoy the moment. Get some fresh air, enjoy nature’s beauty and take care of you! Remember to make this season of life memorable, let the planning take place but also remember your health is most important!

ADVICE

Marriage WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT

F

BY COACH CHRIS

irst, let me just say that I can hardly believe that we are already in the second month of 2022. It seems like we were just watching the clock strike 12 to welcome the new year! Time moves so fast. However, in case I have not had the chance to say happy new year to you personally, let me take this moment and welcome you to 2022. Here’s to the best year of your life — ever! Here is to better! As you know, this month we are featuring the bridal issue, and all our contributors are sharing tips and tricks with you regarding wedding planning, décor, and other topics. This is probably one of my favorite subjects to share because I absolutely love the concept of marriage. My educational background is marriage and family therapy and my husband, and I serve as the lead facilitators for our marriage ministry at our church, Koinonia Christian Center. We have the privilege of meeting with couples and helping

16

to plan group activities that empower them to experience the best marriage possible. We have a phenomenal time. As you are planning and preparing for your big day, allow me the honor of sharing with you a few things I have learned about marriage. 1. Marriage is more than just the wedding day. Now, I love watching brides go through the process of planning their special day. With the right wedding planner, it can be fun and freeing. Picking out flowers, looking at venues and selecting just the right music can be exciting. Over the years, though, I have watched people put more emphasis on the wedding day and not as much on the life after the wedding. May I share this with you: Marriage is about making daily deposits into another imperfect human being as you are navigating the waters of daily life together. It is important to take a moment and look beyond the wedding day and see the future of your marriage.

Her — February 2022

www.reflector.com/her

2. Marriage is not for children. I know this sounds silly, and I am sure many of you reading this are slightly chuckling. It is kind of funny, but I have found it to be so true, particularly as I have had the privilege of coaching and counseling couples. You see, by nature, children think the world centers around them, and that is not the case in marriage. Children throw temper tantrums when they do not get “their” way. You cannot have a healthy marriage and throw a tantrum. In marriage, it is important to put on your “big girl” pants and focus on others. I cannot tell you the number of couples that we have met that are “fussing” over things that are “self-focused” and not marriage centered. In marriage, you must be an adult.

Come Celebrate with us at our new Wine Bar!

Wine & Words... & Gourmet

3. Marriage is to be enjoyed and not just endured. It is important to make note that after the wedding dress is taken off, after the last dance has occurred and when the honeymoon is over, marriage begins! There are some people who will say things like “Honey, just be careful because things change” Or, “Yes, enjoy these moments now because they won’t last.” I want to let you know that this does not have to be your story! You can have a marriage that is full of laughter, companionship, and joy—if you so choose! Your marriage can last forever, and it can be enjoyable. You do not have to be one of the ones whose flame fizzles out over time. You can do things to intentionally make sure that you enjoy your marriage and not just endure it! I hope that the few things that I have shared with you have been helpful! I am believing for you to experience marital bliss long after your wedding day has successfully passed! Know that it will take intentional work, grace and love. Until next time…happy February!

Tommie & Kiki Bourbeau LASTING LOVE SPOTLIGHT

MARRIED 11 YEARS

How did you meet? We met on Match.com. KIKI: I told him on our first date I was going to marry him, and he said it scared him to death how direct I was. He proposed to me at the Daily Grind, which was where we had our first date. When did you get married? We got married on January 22, 2011, in a little white wedding chapel in Vegas. What was your favorite moment of your wedding? KIKI: It was really special having my sister, Christie Hill, and her husband, Doug, fly to Vegas with us to be our witnesses. TOMMIE: My first trip to Vegas and it hit me that I was marrying my soulmate and starting an exciting adventure. KIKI AND TOMMIE: We didn't gamble at all while we were there. We both knew we had already hit the jackpot finding each other. We both loved seeing The Beatles Cirque Du Soleil after the ceremony and agreed it was the best show ever. Whenever we hear a Beatles song now it reminds us of our wedding day. Tell us about your family now? Between us we have three grown sons who have families of their own and three granddaughters. We recently lost our German shepherd (Kobe), so it's just the two of us. What is the best part about being married?

of divorce as being an option.

KIKI: Insurance! (Haha I bugged him to death while we were dating to put me in his plan). Seriously- I love having someone who loves to cook and spoils me when he's home.

TOMMIE: Commitment.

TOMMIE: Kiki has a big heart and is very loving. I love having a partner who loves beach life as much as I do. What is the secret to a lasting and successful marriage? KIKI: Having a relationship with God and never allowing the thought

22

If you could give newly married couples a few words of advice, what would that be? KIKI: Always remember - this is your best friend and focus on their positive traits not the negative. TOMMIE: Be kind always. It is better to not say anything at all than to speak in anger.

ebruary is National Children's Dental Health Month, a time set aside by the American Dental Association to raise awareness of good oral health habits, and preventative dental care in youth. For Dr. Lee Lewis and his team at Eastern Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry (EOPD), it's a daily mission. Founded by Dr. Jasper Lewis, the practice has provided specialized care of infants, children and teens in eastern North Carolina since 1973. For EOPD, it's essential to educate the community and help those children who may be less fortunate. Through events such as East Central Dental Society's Give Kids a Smile Day and outreach programs provided through the school system, EOPD is able to provide crucial education to the community and help those children. Their goal is to keep a patient's smile healthy and strong for life - with an emphasis on patient and family education, preventive care, and minimally invasive treatments. Preventative care should begin sooner than parents may think. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that parents/guardians establish a dental home for their child by their first tooth or first birthday. "It is so important to realize the role that oral health plays in overall health. Dental disease is the most common disease in children, and poor oral health can adversely affect your general well-being throughout your life. That is why focusing on prevention is at the center of our profession, " says Dr. Lee Lewis. Those first few visits to the dentist set the tone for a child's perception of dental care. While the team at EOPD

www.reflector.com/her

is focused on oral health, it strives to incorporate a relaxed atmosphere for the patient. Colorful interior designs and playful themes help ease the anxieties of young patients. The children's area of EOPD is based on a fun pirate ship, a nod to East Carolina Pirates, and the sea voyage continues throughout the clinic. Quiet rooms encourage children to imagine an under-the-sea adventure or a starry night, allowing them to navigate like ancient mariners. For the older patients on the orthodontic side of the office, there's a beach theme with a life-size Jeep equipped with surfboards. And why not? Dr. Lee Lewis is a big Jeep enthusiast! An updated and interactive website helps prepare parents and children for their dental experience. Meeting the doctors and staff with a virtual tour of the office is designed to build excitement and reduces apprehension. A patient portal is also provided, allowing parents and guardians to update health history, check appointment times and make payments. EOPD's website at www.eopd. org offers a colorful and child-friendly storyboard that can be downloaded and printed. This is especially helpful for younger patients and children with special needs. Reducing patient and parent stress and increasing the child's willingness to return to a fun environment helps EOPD build long-term relationships. Monthly contests through the office and a presence on social media are designed to appeal to to older patients. For Dr. Lee Lewis and his team, each effort made to educate and ease anxiety is worth it. Every child deserves to have a healthy smile.

MARRIED 4 YEARS

How did you meet? We met on Facebook in January of 2017 When did you get married? We were married on May 19, 2018, at Blue Creek Chapel in Grimesland What was your favorite moment of your wedding? KRIS: The “ring warming” ceremony when our rings were passed around and prayed over before our vows. PATRICK: (biggest surprise) Seeing my bride walk the down the aisle to the live acoustic violin version of "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran played by violinist, Adam DeGraff (But saying the vows was the best part.) Tell us about your family now: We are a blended family with four children. Patrick has two children, Erin, 13, and Wilson, 8) and Kris has two children (Brilea, 24, and Garris, 21). Brilea is married to Jerrod Conner. We have three dogs, Teddy, Turbo, and Lacy. We live in Greenville with Erin and Wilson and our three pups. What is the best part about being married? KRIS: The partnership and unconditional love. The unwavering support and constant encouragement. PATRICK: The promise and commitment of marriage and having your best friend by your side. I love being able to show her how much I love her every day and sharing and blending our families together. What is the secret to a lasting and successful marriage? KRIS: Sharing expectations with clear communication, honesty and love. Being prayerful separate and together. PATRICK: Love, patience, communication, and common faith. If you could give newly married couples a few words of advice, what would that be? KRIS: Learn and respect each other’s boundaries and how to speak their language. Listen to their words but ask for clarification if unsure. Be slow to anger and be patient and keep seeking ways to show love daily. PATRICK: Communicate, communicate, communicate.

T

BY MARTHA BROWN

he wedding is just one of many celebrations that a couple will experience during marital life. Birthdays, anniversaries, and vacations are occasions for couples to spend time outside of one’s day-to-day routine. How each person understands these times determines if it is a time of joy or stress in their lives. For Renee, Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday, and her partner’s favorite holiday was Christmas. They spent one holiday together and the other holiday apart. Frank’s family enjoyed attending extended family dinners, but they often rushed in and out because work determined his family’s arrival and departure from the table. For Lewis, the joy of exchanging gifts was often tainted by the spiteful and sometimes toxic behavior of the giver. He did not want to attend his family gatherings and thought gifts should be given any day not just on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day. His spouse’s experience was the polar opposite of his; however, she followed his lead until they divorced, and she resumed her family’s traditions. What will our relationships be with extended family? As a couple prepares for their wedding celebration, the conversation should include discussion on how they will continue to celebrate their lives together among family and friends. For instance, will we celebrate Mother’s Day? One woman was surprised by her husband’s tradition of visiting the cemetery after his mother died. For him, the celebration of his mother did not end at death but continued at the grave. If your partner shares with you 40 years of portraits with smiling faces dressed in matching T-shirts, and you have not spoken to your sister in five years, it may be worth exploring how you intend to relate to extended family. Compromise has been one way couples have navigated making decisions, solving problems, and addressing con-

32

flict. For Frank’s family, this worked. Capitulating is another way some couples choose to make decisions. Lewis’ spouse chose this option until she recognized discounting herself was not making her happy. So, what is left, persuasion, avoidance, coercion? Over a period of time, these styles of processing conflict erode the relationship because one or both people are not satisfied with the outcome. I would like to suggest collaboration. Collaboration is an investment of a couple’s time that yields greater satisfaction and outcomes. Talk and listen to your partner for understanding and determining what works for both of you. It is not one conversation but communication that occurs throughout the relationship that allows experiences to be heard and respected, perspectives to be shared and possibly changed, and solutions to be evaluated as they are implemented to determine if they are working. The wedding and reception are not the only celebrations a couple will need to discuss with their wedding officiant or therapist. Renee’s attitude about Christmas changed over time because she and her partner allowed themselves space to talk and listen to each other. Communication skills will help couples to navigate holidays, special occasions, and family traditions throughout their relationship.
