From the President

I would like to start this letter on a personal note. I first came into contact with APIBA when I was a student in College. I had attended several seminars organised by APIBA and had a very high opinion on the academic standards of the Association. You can imagine how thrilled I was to be invited to take part in a list running for the election to the executive committee. This may seem ancient history to you, since unfortunately for a number of years now there has always been a single list; but back then, there actually were two! Our list did not win, though. It was the year when Efraín Davis became president of APIBA. And it was Daniel Reznik, who was running for president then, who had invited me to join his list. Unfortunately, Daniel is no longer with us. He passed away on June 4. APIBA will sorely miss him. Daniel has enriched APIBA with his knowledge, his disinterested academic contributions, and his fine sense of humour (do you remember the auction he conducted for us on APIBA’s 30th anniversary?). To honour his memory, APIBA has decided to dedicate its Annual Event to Daniel, thus its general topic will be Language and Culture, one of his main concerns. You will find further information about this event and the call for papers in this issue. Now I would like to go over some of the activities we have done so far. On April 18 we had the APIBA SIGs opening session, which was attended by a group of very enthusiastic members and many newcomers as well. We want to thank Valeria Artigue and Alejandra Jorge for their dedication and careful organisation. Next we held the seminar “Foreign Language Learning: the Younger, the Better?” on May 8, which was a complete success. (Corine, are you ready for the next challenge?) Over 120 people attended Silvia Ronchetti’s plenary and the workshops run by Laura Campagnoli, Mercedes Pérez Berbain and Lina Casuscelli at IES en Lenguas Vivas “Juan Ramón Fernández”. We all enjoyed the rich theoretical background and the invaluable practical ideas offered by our distinguished speakers. (Thank you, Laura, for the updated information you shared with us!) What is going on now? We have created a new section in our web site: a calendar of events. (Thank you, Cris, for designing it!) We expect it to become a reference tool for teachers, bookstores, publishing houses and all institutions involved in English teaching. It is very easy to use and we are currently fine-tuning some last details. We are also implementing our Jobshop project (Thank you, Silvia, for putting pen to paper! and Litty for informing members and institutions). You will be learning more about it in this issue, so if you are interested in getting information about situations vacant or in publishing an ad to get qualified teachers, get ready to send in your form!. Finally, please remember that APIBA is a professional association of English teachers, a group of professionals working towards a shared goal. Thus, APIBA is what its members make of it. As we always say, APIBA needs increased participation from its members in its different activities. We are still working on re-building our network of local delegates. If you are interested in becoming one, or want to make any suggestions or comments, please get in touch with us. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you all at APIBA events.

FAAP 004 no mor e AAPII 2 2004 more From FAAPI´s newsletter: “All the news is not good since APISNAsociacion de Profesores de Inglés de San Nicolás- finally confirmed they would not be up to the challenge they had initially undertaken, for their Executive Committee was decimated by some of their members’ need to move to other cities and the poor response their Assembly summons received. So, this year we will not have the great event we had expected but, who knows, we may still get two or three geographically close Associations to get together and organize something in a smaller scale that will enable them to host it in suitable premises and catering to the needs of the teachers in their area. Our hearts go to APISN wishing them a prompt recovery. “
