Newsletter From the President The 1999 Annual Seminar on Studies for Graduate Teachers was successfully conducted at the spacious premises of the ISP 'J.V. González' and included the participation of representatives from the Universidad Nacional de Comahue, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Univ. del Salvador, Universidad CAECE, Trinity College London, AACI/King’s College, Univ. of London, NILE/UEA, Universidad de Belgrano, Univ. of London/IES en LV “J.R.F.”, and ISP 'J.V. González.' The participants at the Seminar had the chance to ask the presenters many questions and a lively debate ensued. The information about the different programmes provided by the institution and compiled by APIBA, and the comparative charts prepared by Mrs. Graciela Moyano are available from APIBA. For this year a host of activities have been planned. These include a range of short presentations aimed at reaching members outside the City of Buenos Aires; the creation of SIGs (Special Interest Groups) to bring together people working in the same area; encouraging the publication of material by members; an informative event about examinations, and more!

Research is underway to produce a ‘History of APIBA’ in time for the 30th Anniversary. Long term members with a good memory and/or historical sources in their possession relating to the Association are invited to contact the committee if they would like to help our historian, Dr. Raymond Day, with his investigations.

In its capacity as representative before the educational authorities, APIBA is studying a number of suggestions made by members concerning recent regulations,in particular those concerning the status of degrees, and action to be taken.

After a financially difficult, but professionally fruitful year, and looking towards APIBA's 30th anniversary next year, the current Committee are undertaking a thorough review of members’ details. If you have recently moved or your details have otherwise changed, please let us know. A professional association is a group of professionals working towards a shared goal. What APIBA needs is increased participation from its members in different activities.

As a final word, perhaps the most important thing to remember is that APIBA is what its members make of it, and rather than asking "What can APIBA do for me?" you should ask "What can I do for APIBA?" We look forward to hearing from you!

A Reminder People who have applied for membership in the last few months are reminded that they will not become full members until two passport-sized photographs and a copy of their degree have been received by the APIBA.

APIBA Delegates and Volunteers APIBA is looking for members who are willing to act as APIBA Delegates at the institution where they work. The Delegates are to become a two-way link between the members and the APIBA committee, centralising suggestions from the mem.bers and transmitting them to the committee and informing members and potential members of the work carried out by the Association. All paperwork needed will be provided by APIBA and having an e-mail address is definitely an advantage. The main requirement is willingness to help the Association!

APIBA is also looking for volunteers among its members. We would like to be present at as many activities as possible and would like to request the help of members for these events.

FAAPI 2000 FAAPI’s annual conference 2000 will take place in Comodoro Rivadavia between the 21st and the 23rd of September. The call for papers is open until May 31st.

APIBA Supports FAAPI 2000 To encourage APIBA members to take part in FAAPI 2000, the Association is offering a scholarship and two subsidies. To apply for these, candidates should be members of APIBA (with dues up-to-date) and should submit a CV and a 500word letter stating how they would benefit from them before June 30, 2000.

FAAPI has agreed to waive the conference enrolment fee for the successful applicants

First-time Presenter FAAPI Scholarship

First-time presenters at the 2000 FAAPI conference can apply for a scholarship to cover a substantial part of their expenses to go to Comodoro Rivadavia. APIBA will cover $300, payable in arrears, towards tickets & accommodation.

FAAPI Participant Subsidies

APIBA members wishing to attend the 2000 FAAPI conference in September, can apply for two travel subsidies of $100 each, payable in arrears, to cover part of the travel expenses to Comodoro.

Forthcoming APIBA Seminars There will be a seminar at the end of June on “International Examinations”. Venue and date will be confirmed in due time.

After the success of last year’s annual seminar, the subject of this year’s annual conference (to take place in October) will be the content of postgraduate courses for teachers of English.

APIBA SIGs: Special Interest Groups to foster professional development APIBA has recently launched the APIBA SIGs (Special Interest Groups) in order to enable teachers with similar interests to share ideas and make contacts through regular meetings, newsletters and conference events. Like APIBA as a whole, the SIGs are committed to encouraging professional development and networking.

A SIG is not a course – a SIG is a study group in which all members participate and exchange ideas and opinions. Those who wish to participate don't have to be experts in a particular area – they just need to be keen to learn new things, share ideas, debate issues and meet colleagues. SIG activities are open and democratic, and small projects are also welcome. Some possibilities include: presentation of sample classes; discussion of syllabi, of recently published material and research; development of research projects; debate on controversial issues, etc.

At present, there are twelve SIGS: 1. Language 4. Literature 7. Kids 10. Computers 2. Grammar / Linguis- 5. Methodology 8. Teens 11. Testing & 6. Phonetics/ Photics 9. Business Asseessment 3. History / Civilisation nology 12. Translation SIG events are free for APIBA members and teacher trainees (proof of student status is required). Non-APIBA members are also welcome, but a $10 contribution per session is charged.

Information about SIG activities, dates and venues is available through APIBA Newsletters, e-mail lists, various ELT / Education publications, and noticeboards at various institutions. FAAPI 1999 Scholarship Results At the 1999 APIBA Annual Seminar, and before notary public, the raffle of the FAAPI Scholarship was made among the applicants that qualified. The winner of the raffle was Ms. Daniela Delgado.

The raffle consisted of a trip to Britain to study at the Bell Language Schools for a month. We look forward to hearing from Ms. Delgado on her return.

Movies and video at the British Arts Centre On Tuesdays at 17, 19 and 9 hs., the British Art Centre will show its cycle “Graham Greene: Hombre de Cine”, featuring movies written and based on novels by Graham Greene, including one in which he did a cameo appearance, and movies which Greene admired as a film critic. All movies are subtitled in Spanish.
