APPROACH

The projects chosen for this book push architecture’s limited ability to give commentary on complex social and political aspects of our culture. Architecture has to exist on many levels. It must, first and foremost, be smart—it has to function. Functionality does not equal sterility or preclude imagination. Some of the best buildings in terms of function turn conventional wisdom on its head and create space that redefines the notions of the program. Function also means function for all people, not

Sketches by A. Plummer

just the able-bodied. Beauty is a prerequisite. People dislike nothing more than a pretentiously ugly building in their community. The parameters of beauty change site by site. The beauty of an architectural solution in one site does not necessarily translate into beauty in another site. A deeper exploration of a piece of architecture should yield a metaphor. In a place like Atlanta, race is a permeating issue, and these tensions can be implied in the architecture. This particular metaphor can

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

manifest in various ways, from pushing boundaries of public space and social etiquette to working the idea of marching as a form of protest into the design. The complete architectural solution does not lie in the site; the solution comes from the design process — the models, sketches, and architectural drawings produced from programmatic requirements and the designer’s intuition. When this intuition elegantly meets the opportunities of program and site, smart and beautiful architecture ensues.

In creating a home for the Cordoba family, we allowed the culture to inspire and inform the program.

The Move and the Moments First Place National Organization of Minority Architects [NOMA] Student Design Competition St. Louis 10.2009 Semester 5

We designed a house for a multigenerational Colombian family that was relocating to an historic neighborhood in St. Louis. Colombian culture is family-oriented, and much respect and honor is given to the elders. We wanted the wheelchair-bound grandfather to be able to go everywhere in the house. Instead of relying on an elevator, we ingeniously connected all levels with a ramp. It was important to make the entire home universally accessible while creating an architecturally relevant and sustainable dwelling. The heart of a Colombian home is its central space—the courtyard, which is a focal point that visually and physically provides a cultural

Rendering by GTNOMAS.

reference for the family. The kitchen serves as a familiar reference to Colombian culture in that it has a seamless relationship with the courtyard. Therefore, the wall between kitchen and courtyard can transform to create one large space—the sparkspace for the Cordoba family. By de-emphasizing individual space and heightening the shared space, we created this new element—the sparkspace—that allows the family to be together, share ideas, and strengthen relationships.

An Urban Monument and A Good Urban Move Atlanta, USA 4.2009 Semester 4

Rendering by A. Plummer.

Atlanta, the “city too busy to hate,” routinely uses “urban” as a code word for Black. The historic fourth ward, birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the seat of the Civil Rights movement, was formerly a thriving Black business district. In the 1960s, the city built an expressway that severed Auburn Avenue, a thriving home to many Black-owned businesses. It was part of a greater strategy of Black removal under the guise of urban renewal, and Blacks in Atlanta still suffer from the forced migration. In designing a research center on city planning, the architectural solution is an urban monument that draws its form from important moments in the fabric of the site’s complex Black history. It is also a good urban move because it treats the program as mixed zoning, it creates a socially charged space (part of the

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

urban theater), and it brings the street into the site while acknowledging the street edge. This research center of the urban environment is poised to conduct meaningful studies and to form thoughtful solutions on the future of urban development in Atlanta, while shaping spaces for discourse in this historic community.

Behnisch Architekten Internship DMM Ozeaneum Stralsund, Germany 8.2006-5.2007

Photography by A. Plummer.

The nine-month paid internship at Behnisch Architekten was my first experience into the professional side of architecture. I spent the majority of my time working on the Ozeaneum in Stralsund, which broke ground while I was there. Working on a building under construction and visiting the site were invaluable experiences. I learned to draw, proof, print, and fold plans, and I organized the plans that were sent out and that came in. At Behnisch, models are integral to the design process, and I spent many hours building them. The attitude at Behnisch was that one must work with 3-D objects to design a building that would exist in three dimensions. Even a computer model only looks three dimensional on screen, but in reality, it exists in two dimensions. For the Ozeaneum, we built many large, detailed models at multiple

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

scales, even though the client did not request them. These models helped us test material, color, and texture. The most important lesson of this experience was learning first-hand the importance of teamwork in the design and building process.

Library as Theater: The Play Between Culture and Nature Atlanta, USA 12.2008 Semester 3

Rendering by A. Plummer.

Human interactions in a library are inherently theatrical. Because talking in any form above a barely audible whisper is a faux pas, patrons resort to exaggerated gestures to communicate. In the architectural solution for an urban branch library in Atlanta, this inherent theater of pantomime becomes exaggerated and expands to include other theatrical arrangements of space. The structural system offers the groundwork for the theater. This system includes 10ft by 30ft bays that act as “streets. Wormholes, the means of access into the library, sate a desire to see and be seen. The library also plays with the idea of reversible theater; in the general reading areas, either the garden or the city can be backdrop. The private reading area evokes the theater in the round. Patrons have a good seat for the drama of the entrance hall,

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

or the action in the garden. The facade itself provides a backdrop for the urban theater, and its materials draw from the history of the area as it shifted from wood buildings to masonry. This design captures the drama and excitement found in books and integrates it into the human interactions that take place within the library.

Neugestaltung der Frankenvorstadt & Musikhaus Stralsund Stralsund 08.2010 Semester 6

Rendering by A. Plummer.

Stralsund, a historic port city in the former East Germany, declined during the communist era, but it is now being revitalized. Since Stralsund has a history of digging canals and creating islands in the Strelasund, our design continues the tradition. We create three new islands, and we incorporate elements of the old harbor, such as cranes and railroad tracks, into the new public space. We extend the promenade across all four islands, linking the Ozeaneum with our new Musikhaus and ending at a public space with access to the water on the southeastern-most tip.

(an outdoor stage, an indoor concert hall, an intimate hall, and an atrium with dance floor) are oriented towards the sea, canals, and city. The atrium’s structure gives visitors a feeling of being in a ship hanger while the whiteclad buildings appear to be sails in the wind. Thus, the Musikhaus is in dialogue with the Ozeaneum two islands north.

The Musikhaus develops out of this new urban context. It is located at the central point of the redevelopment plan where the promenade, street, and pedestrian ways cross. A glass atrium defines the block and frames the promenade. Four music venues

The University Ave site is a 1.45 acre area of vacant industrial lots and underused parcels in southwest Atlanta. It is bordered on the north by the disenfranchised Pittsburgh neighborhood and on the south by the BeltLine. The City of Atlanta has flagged this site as a potential area for green industry.

University Ave Redevelopment Plan Atlanta 03.2011 Semester 8

Drawing by A. Plummer.

When analyzing the history of the development of this site—from the industrial zone that developed along the railroads in the 1830s, to the neighborhoods that in filled between the railroads, to the expressway that cut through this neighborhood fabric in the 1950s—and the current conditions, certain issues came to the forefront of the design process. Because of the history of industry along the railroad, buildings turn their backs to the rail corridors. The railway and the expressway fragment the site, with partial or

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

no access between fragments. The site is well connected within the City of Atlanta and Metro Atlanta, thanks to the expressway, several major arterials and the BeltLine. The design goals respond to these understandings of the University Ave site. The new urban scheme creates a walkable grid in the industrial zone, selectively connects the various fragments, and fronts the freight rail line and major public ways. This scheme also maximizes the potential for light industrial uses with an easement in the eastern half of the site which accommodates light rail freight coming off the BeltLine. Atlanta Biodiesel Atlanta 05.2011 Semester 8

Every city has restaurants that produce grease waste that ends up in landfills or sewers, and municipal fleets that have a large gas bill due to rising diesel prices. Biodiesel is a green energy solution. Biodiesel takes restaurant waste, a negative, and turns it into fuel and fertilizer, both positives. It started out as a grassroots initiative—guys made it in their garages in 5-gallon buckets, slightly risky but ultimately profitable. Now start-up companies all over the country produce it in various quantities. The City of Atlanta has 360,000 private vehicles, and there aren’t enough restaurants in the city to drastically affect the way we fuel these private vehicles. Only 2.5% of these cars could be supplied by the biodiesel that the restaurant grease could produce. However it does make economic sense to bring cities,

Drawing by A. Plummer.

AUDREY PLUMMER UNDERGRADUATE PORTFOLIO 2011

restaurants and biodiesel together. The City of Atlanta has 3500 restaurants that produce 10.5 million lbs of waste a year. The 1.4 million gal of biodiesel this grease yields is enough to fuel the 4,670 municipal vehicles owned by the City of Atlanta. The City can go green and save taxpayer dollars. To be viable, the biodiesel refinery should be centrally located within the city and have access to several major public ways. Ideally, it should also be located in a neighborhood in need of jobs, green or otherwise.

Sage Hill Redevelopment Plan Atlanta 12.2010 Semester 7

The Sage Hill Redevelopment Plan is a proposal to retrofit a congested suburban arterial, a disorganized street network, a strip shopping center, aging residences, and an underused floodplain into a walkable, compact, mixed-use, transit-oriented development with accessible parks and trails along a re-appreciated Peachtree Creek. The redevelopment is based on the projected construction of a light rail station on the Sage Hill site along the existing freight rail right of way. This new transit line will directly connect Sage Hill to nearby Emory University, and to Georgia Tech, Downtown Atlanta and the airport. The proposal also connects the redevelopment to the Sage Hill’s historic and natural features. Historically, the fluctuating topography of Sage Hill and its location on winding Peachtree

Creek made it a valued retreat for the family of Ira Yale Sage, who was instrumental in the development of the rail network that brought Atlanta into fruition in the early 1800’s. However, development since the 1950’s has flattened much of the hill while making the creek inaccessible – except to the runoff from the parking lots. The Sage Hill Redevelopment Plan reconstitutes the hill and adds access to the creek within an urban experience of winding, sloping streets and terraced buildings, leading down to the beautiful and surprisingly untouched waterfront.

EXISTING CONDITIONS Fifty years ago, Sage Hill was flattened to make way for a strip mall. Currently, the street system is tangled and dangerous, and the suburban land use only allows for object buildings surrounded by parking lots.

REGRADING THE HILL To accommodate the new street grid, we regraded the streets to an easy slope and reconstituted the hill. Also, the architecture attempts to recreate the hill by terracing buildings and stepping roof heights.

PUBLIC SPACE: FLOODPLAIN PARK AS COMMUNAL FRONT YARD

The new park serves as a collective front yard and incorporates a system of mounds and “donut playgrounds” to detain water and serve as visual termini reiterating the identity of Sage Hill’s topography.
