La operación Matadero Madrid se enmarca en el programa de rehabilitación del patrimonio histórico madrileño y en el plan de regeneración de la parte sur de la ciudad de Madrid. El antiguo matadero municipal de Arganzuela constituye uno de los establecimientos industriales más singulares e interesantes de la arquitectura madrileña del siglo XX. El complejo se incluye en los bordes del río Manzanares, manteniendo los valores de su sistema edificado, de su ordenación y las derivadas de su carácter propio. Se trata de un complejo acorde con el fuerte carácter industrial de sus edificaciones, versátil, más urbano que el parque inmediato y alejado de materiales lujosos. Por su ubicación, Matadero Madrid potencia la prolongación del gran eje cultural Recoletos-Prado hasta la plaza de Legazpi, extendiendo la centralidad de la ciudad de Madrid al entorno del río Manzanares.
The Matadero Madrid operation is part of the renovation programme of the historic heritage of Madrid and the regeneration plan of the southern part of the city. The old slaughterhouse (matadero in Spanish) of Arganzuela is one of the most unique, interesting industrial establishments of 20th century architecture in Madrid. The complex is included on the banks of the Manzanares river, maintaining the characteristics of its construction system, its layout and the derivatives of its character. This is a complex agreement with the strong industrial character of its buildings, versatile, more urban than the nearby park and far from luxurious materials. Because of its location, Matadero Madrid strengthens the expansion of the cultural axis Recoletos-Prado up to the Plaza Legazpi, extending the centrality of the city of Madrid along the Manzanares river.

La concentración de instituciones culturales en torno a este eje supone una oportunidad para maximizar sinergias, en términos de oferta cultural y públicos potenciales. El principal proyecto de transformación urbana de Madrid, “Madrid Río”, a partir del soterramiento de la vía de circunvalación M-30, permitirá prolongar este eje al otro lado del Manzanares, en el distrito de Usera, proporcionando una oportunidad única para acrecentar, tanto desde el punto de vista cultural como urbanístico, el proyecto Matadero. El centro se integra, por tanto, en el espacio urbano de los distritos de Arganzuela y Usera que, con el proyecto de urbanización del parque lineal del Manzanares, quedarán unidos, lo que contribuirá a la regeneración cultural del sur y la creación de un espacio de identidad artística. Además de constituir uno de los principales proyectos de la política de promoción exterior de la ciudad, se define como un espacio multicultural e intercultural abierto a otras culturas, como reflejo de la diversidad cultural que habita Madrid.
The concentration of cultural institutions around this axis creates an opportunity to maximise synergy as far as cultural activities and potential audiences are concerned. The main urban transformation project of Madrid, “Madrid Río,” beginning with the tunnelling of the ring road M30, will allow this axis to expand to the other side of the Manzanares, to the Usera district, providing a unique opportunity to add to the Matadero project from both the cultural point of view and that of urban planning. The centre is thus integrated into the urban space of the districts of Arganzuela and Usera which, with the urban planning project of the Manzanares linear park, will be connected. This will contribute to the cultural regeneration of the south of Madrid and the creation of a space for artistic identity. Besides building one of the main projects of the outer-city promotion policy, it is defined as a multicultural and intercultural space open to other cultures, as a reflection of the cultural diversity that inhabits Madrid.

Civilities Intermediae_Matadero es un centro integrado en Matadero Madrid, proyecto que se enmarca dentro de la dinámica de fundación de nuevos espacios para la creación artística que tienen difícil cabida en los espacios culturales tradicionales. El reciclaje de espacios vetustos es una práctica ya puesta en marcha por otros centros internacionales de creación: 104 Aubervilliers1 y Palais de Tokio2 en París, Les Abbatoirs3 en Toulouse, Lieu Unique4 en Nantes, Ex Mattatoio5 en Roma o el PS16 en Nueva York. Matadero Madrid completa el riquísimo eje museístico de Madrid atrayendo actividad cultural hacia el Sur de la ciudad, que tradicionalmente ha carecido de equipamientos culturales. El proyecto Intermediae pretende promover el diálogo entre los artistas y la interacción con el público y la ciudad. Cuenta con dos centros neurálgicos: por un lado, Intermediae_Matadero, y por otro Intermediae_Prado7, que se ubicará en una antigua serrería, cercano al Museo del Prado y junto al nuevo centro de arte CaixaForum de los arquitectos Herzog y de Meuron.

Intermediae_Matadero is an integrated centre in Matadero Madrid, a project that is part of the dynamic of opening new spaces for artistic creation that does not fit inside traditional cultural spaces. Older spaces have been recycled as other international creation centres, like 104 Aubervilliers1 and Palais de Tokio2 in Paris, Les Abbatoirs3 in Toulouse, Lieu Unique4 in Nantes, Ex Mattatoio5 in Rome or PS16 in New York. Matadero Madrid completes Madrid’s museum axis by attracting cultural activity towards the south of the city which has traditionally lacked cultural facilities. The Intermediae project seeks to promote dialogue among artists and interaction with the general public and the city. It has two nerve centres, on one side Intermediae_Matadero and on the other, Intermediae_Prado7, which will based in a former sawmill, near the Prado museum and next to the new CaixaForum art centre by the architects Herzog and de Meuron.

Funcionamiento del edificio Building functioning El centro cuenta con un espacio social de relación abierto al público y un espacio de infraestructura y producción permanente para la planificación de las actividades. El espacio social cuenta con un espacio recepción y acogida de público, que además integra una cantina. Por otro lado, dos grandes salas acogen el espacio común para el desarrollo de los programas, que se definirá de acuerdo con los requerimientos de los mismos: los espacios o subespacios serán, por tanto, temporales. El espacio común está comunicado con el espacio de recepción, pudiendo llegar a funcionar cada uno como extensión del otro. Se trata de un espacio versátil que permite distintos grados de utilización y un eventual cierre por secciones. Por su parte, en la mediateca se custodiarán los archivos históricos relacionados con la actividad del centro, los archivos de las actividades del programa, una biblioteca y un fondo documental de obras. El acceso es libre, salvo para los archivos históricos, cuya consulta sigue con un horario establecido.
This centre has a social space open for public interaction and an area for infrastructures and permanent production for activity planning. The social space has a public reception and welcoming area which also has a cafeteria. The centre also has two large halls that use the common area to carry out programmes which will be defined according to the spatial requirements of the programmes. The spaces or subspaces will therefore be temporary. The common area is connected to the reception area, with the possibility of acting as an extension of it. It is a versatile space that allows different types of usage and on occasions, dividing the area into sections. The media library will be used to store historical archives related to the centre’s activities, files related to the activities of the programme, a library and a documental works archive. The media library will be open to the public, except the historical archives, which will have an established timetable for their use.

Criterios técnicos y de sostenibilidad Technical and sustainability criteria El proyecto sirvió como oportunidad para explorar las posibilidades de la rehabilitación, reduciendo al mínimo necesario la intervención y estableciendo un diálogo constante entre lo nuevo y lo antiguo. Se ha pretendido voluntariamente mantener los cortes producidos en los muros tal y como una radial los va cortando. Las bajantes de PVC cobran interés al desnudo. Las marcas de la retroexcavadora originan texturas imprevistas al retirar el revoco. Los aislamientos de corcho aparecen como un testigo de la historia frigorífica del edificio: cualquier testigo del proceso permanece sin alteraciones. Los materiales proceden directamente de la industrialización, sin transformación ninguna, de medidas estándar. Así perfiles de acero descontextualizados, sin tratar, se convierten en bancos, barras, suelos técnicos, rodapiés, puertas, junquillos, etc. El vidrio montado de la manera más sencilla con sus dimensiones máximas sin cortar puede ser también reutilizado. Un mundo de materiales industriales es capaz de establecer una comunicación abierta con lo antiguo, alcanzando ambos su máxima expresividad.
The project served as an opportunity to explore renovation possibilities, reducing the intervention to a necessary minimum and establishing a constant dialogue between old and new. The idea was to purposely keep the cuts made in the walls exactly as a radial cuts them. The PVC drain pipes become interesting in their naked form. The marks of the back hoe create improvised textures when the plaster is removed. The cork insulation appears as a testimony of the building’s refrigerated past, any witness of the process remains unaltered. The materials come straight from the industrialisation, unchanged, and in standard measurements. So, out-ofplace cross sections of untreated steel become benches, bars, floors, skirting boards, doors, jonquils, etc. The glass put up in the simplest way possible in its maximum uncut dimensions can also be reused.
