Civilities II Esta segunda entrega de Civilities es una selección de arquitecturas que tienen una estrecha relación con el lugar. Algunas forman parte de proyectos de regeneración urbana; otras son testigos de lo público en medio del territorio privado, o meros puntos de vida en paisajes despoblados. En otros casos, la arquitectura viene a sumarse a lugares ya existentes, a memorias y usos que pasan a ser estratos de las nuevas construcciones. En algunos proyectos el diálogo entre lo viejo y lo nuevo se desarrolla en voz baja, con la intimidad de viejos conocidos, mientras en otros cobra la tensión propia de las conversaciones entre padres e hijos. También hay intervenciones en las que se pone a prueba la relación con los vecinos, la facilidad para compartir espacios, combinar lenguajes y conciliar funciones. Cada uno practica las buenas maneras según su estilo, con mayor o menor sofisticación, con diferentes presupuestos y con rigores disciplinares diversos. Los miles de kilómetros de distancia que hay entre ellos no les impiden formar parte del mismo grupo de amigos. This second issue of Civilities is a selection of architectures that are closely related to their location. Some form part of urban regeneration projects while others represent public realm in the middle of a private territory or behave as simple centres of life in a deserted landscape. In other cases, the architecture is added to existing places, to memories and uses that become a stratus of new constructions. In some projects, the dialogue between old and new is whispered intimately, among old friends. Others take on the tension of a conversation of parents and children. There are also interventions that test relationships with neighbours, the ability to share spaces, combine languages and reconcile functions. Each one has its own good manners, with more or less sophistication, with different budgets and diverse disciplinary rigour. The thousands of kilometres between them does not prevent them from being part of the same group of friends.

El proyecto se encuentra en el Eixample, distrito donde nació la Barcelona moderna, ideada por el ingeniero y urbanista Ildefons Cerdà. El distrito es fruto de uno de los momentos más esplendorosos de la historia de la ciudad, cuando se configura definitivamente como el motor de la Cataluña contemporánea y rompe con el pasado medieval derribando las murallas a mediados del siglo XIX. La mejor expresión creativa de este momento es el estilo arquitectónico modernista que impregna el distrito, con una acumulación de edificios de gran valor patrimonial que, bajo el reinado de la Sagrada Família, lo convierten en un conjunto sin comparación en Europa. Con su plan urbanístico, Cerdà diseñó una ciudad igualitaria, donde no se diferencian unos barrios de los otros y los servicios públicos se reparten
This project is located in the Cerdà’s Eixample, the district where modern Barcelona was born. The district is the result of one of the most splendid movements in the history of the city, when it became the motor of contemporary Catalonia, breaking with its medieval past by tearing down the city’s walls in the 19th century. The best creative expression of that moment is the architectural style of the Modernisme (art nouveau) movement that impregnates the district, with an accumulation of culturally very valuable buildings that, under the reign of the Sagrada Familia, make it an incomparable ensemble in Europe. With its urban planning, Cerdà designed an egalitarian city, where one neighbourhood did not differ from another and where public services

uniformemente por todos los rincones, evitando el tradicional amontonamiento de casas del casco antiguo en la vecina Ciutat Vella. Con un gran rigor, el proyecto tuvo en cuenta el reparto uniforme de zonas de servicios, como mercados, centros sociales e iglesias, y unos grandes parques de distrito. Las manzanas no eran exactamente cuadradas ya que, para facilitar la visibilidad, en las esquinas se cortaban los ángulos en forma de chaflán. En el interior de cada una sólo se permitía construir en uno o dos lados, y el resto del espacio se dejaba para el jardín de los vecinos. Como se puede comprobar, la realidad no respetó todas las premisas que preveía el plan Cerdà, sino que las manzanas se acabaron colmatando (dando lugar a uno de los barrios más densamente poblados de Europa) y sus patios interiores perdieron su vocación original de espacio comunitario. En este contexto, el centro de servicios comunitarios de Sant Antoni sirve para devolver a uno de estos interiores de manzana el uso comunitario que pretendía el plan original de Ildefons Cerdà.
were spread out to each area, avoiding the traditional crowding of homes in the medieval neighbourhood of the Ciutat Vella. The project very rigorously foresaw the uniform distribution of service zones, like markets, social centres and churches, and a few large district parks. The blocks were not exactly square since the corners were chamfered for visibility. Inside each block, construction was only allowed on one or two sides and the rest of the space was left for neighbours’ gardens. As one can see now, reality did not respect all of the premises of Cerdà’s plan and the blocks ended up being completely filled, creating one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Europe. The inner patios also ended up losing their original purpose as community space. In this context, the community service centre of Sant Antoni serves to give back one of these inner blocks to the community and the community use that Ildefons Cerdà’s plan intended.

Civilities El proyecto, al igual que la Biblioteca Sagrada Familia de Manuel Ruisánchez que mostramos a continuación (pp. 62-75), pertenece al plan de actuaciones impulsado por Proeixample, una empresa de economía mixta, con capital público y privado, creada por el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. ProEixample tiene como misión llevar a cabo el plan de revitalización del distrito del Eixample para aumentar su atractivo y mejorar la calidad de vida de sus residentes. Para ello se ha puesto en marcha la renovación y regeneración de calles y espacios públicos, la obtención de interiores de manzana para ganar nuevos espacios comunitarios y zonas verdes y la construcción de equipamientos que, como en este caso, pretenden romper las barreras a la convivencia entre distintas generaciones, fomentando así la cohesión social. El plan comprende además la dinamización del distrito como centro comercial, de negocio, cultural, turístico y de ocio, y el impulso y la promoción de iniciativas relacionadas con la vivienda.

This project, like library Biblioteca Sagrada Familia by Manuel Ruisánchez that follows (pp. 62-75), is part of the action plan driven by ProEixample, a mixed economy company created by the City of Barcelona, with public and private capital. ProEixample’s mission is to carry out a revitalisation plan in the Eixample district to make it more attractive and improve its residents’ quality of life. In order to do so, the company has begun the renovation and regeneration of streets and public spaces, the recovery of the inner areas of street blocks to gain new useable space and green areas, and the construction of public service buildings that, as in this case, work to break down barriers between different generations, thus encouraging social cohesion. The plan also includes the dynamisation of the district as an area that is home to business, culture, tourism and leisure activities, and includes the impulse and promotion of housing initiatives.

El centro incorpora un programa variado para dinamizar el uso del espacio libre generado en el interior de manzana. Este programa comprende una biblioteca de barrio de acceso, un hogar de jubilados como contrapunto y cohesión social, y un área de juegos infantiles en el patio. La puerta, con la biblioteca, busca la identificación y la insinuación del espacio verde y abierto interior. Tiene una entrada de luz por entre las cajas interpuestas de las salas de lectura. Convierte el acceso al patio en un paso filtrado de luz, de la misma manera en que los árboles dejan pasar la los rayos de sol. Niños y abuelos disfrutan de los espacios temáticos del patio-jardín. El hogar construye un cerramiento real (como una cinta gruesa que dota de geometría clara al espacio y protege las construcciones en planta baja existentes), de calidad (es fachada y no muro) y evocadora (el vacío que genera entre los límites, permite crear la ilusión que el espacio verde continúa y crece).

This centre incorporates a varied programme to dynamise the free space generated on the inside of the block. This programme includes a neighbourhood library as its door, a home for retirees, creating counterpoint and social cohesion, and a children’s play area on the patio. The entrance along with the library searches for the identification and insinuation of green space and inner openness. It allows light in between the boxes inserted in the reading rooms and turns the patio entrance into a passage filtered with light like the trees that let light in. Children and grandparents enjoy the thematic patio-garden spaces. The home creates a real quality closure (like a thick strip that provides clear geometry to the space and protects the constructions on the existing ground floors). The closure is facade and not wall, evocative in that the emptiness between the edges creates the illusion of a continuously growing green space.
