SPECIFIC FORM

CONCEPT This project is inserted into the Barcode plan, designed in 2003 by a-lab in partnership with MVRDV for the new Bjorvika district. The plan proposes a distance between the volumes oscillating between 10 and 15 m, for heights ranging from 50 to 60 m, which obliges the buildings to be sculpted to let in sunlight. The architects justify the fragmentation of the area into long narrow plots arguing the need to preserve the permeability between the maritime boundary –converted to a leisure and cultural space, with the construction of the Opera and the Munch Museum– and the transport infrastructures 126

located to the north of the Urban Plan. The form of the block has been adapted to the required porosity and also creates large urban street fronts on the lateral facades which interact with the help of the pedestrian space running through them. The planning regulations associated with the plan required 50% of the horizontal space to be both green and open space, which meant the removal of a large part of the volume of the blocks and the creation of a large communal terrace. In addition to this, there was the real estate demand that all the dwellings had to be dual aspect. DENSITY SERIES

FORM&DATA research group

The illustration of the elephant is a reference to the issue of the relationship between support structure and form. This interior system is known to exist yet we are not always aware of its material nature. FORM&DATA includes an anatomical review of twenty collective housing projects, which gives an insight into the real relationship between form and internal organs and to finds the true location of the soul of each project. The volume continues along the route first taken with WHY DENSITY? and it is part of the Density series, considered to be a key global research work on collective housing.
