A historical overview

El híbrido metropolitano La historia de los híbridos comienza a finales del siglo XIX, cuando la ciudad densa admite como inevitable la superposición de funciones. Es en el interior de la metrópoli donde nacen estos organismos mixtos, ayudados fundamentalmente por el poder catalizador de la centralidad. Su origen está en el incremento desproporcionado del valor del suelo y en la rigidez de la trama urbana. Se pueden seleccionar ejemplos anteriores provenientes de la arquitectura clásica, o de situaciones tradicionales ligadas con infraestructuras, pero será en la pragmática metrópoli norteamericana donde el edificio híbrido, devorando los tipos tradicionales, va a contener en su interior tantas funciones como sean rentables. El edificio híbrido gusta, por tanto, de entornos densos y fecundos, favorables a la natural aparición de inesperadas actividades.

En 1916, se aprobó la Ordenanza de Zonificación de Nueva York, que regulaba los usos, la altura y el volumen de los nuevos edificios. En ella se estableció la inclinación apropiada del rayo de luz solar hasta el eje de la calle. Esta línea coincidía con la oblicua de mínimo retranqueo al que quedaban obligados los rascacielos neoyorquinos. Desde entonces, el volumen edificado se tenía que retrasar escalonadamente a medida que ascendía, lo que planteó nuevos retos compositivos a los arquitectos de aquella época, educados todavía en los esquemas de la École des Beaux Arts. La crisis de estilo tuvo que ser notable, porque se cambiaron los valores estéticos de los ismos por las imposiciones pragmáticas de la estructura y la economía de la obra. El arquitecto se vio obligado a realizar una interpretación literal de las nuevas ordenanzas para trasladarlas al edificio y olvidarse de las tradiciones del pasado.

Los metros cuadrados bien iluminados pasaron a tener más valor que una cornisa de estilo Renacimiento francés cuidadosamente dibujada.

La construcción, en 1915, de los cuarenta pisos del Equitable Building en Nueva York supuso un escándalo público, porque impedía el soleamiento natural de Cedar street, una calle que, a partir de ese momento, se oscureció para siempre. Años antes, lo normal era construir tan alto como fuera posible, sin tener en consideración a los vecinos. La ley era la del más fuerte y los edificios crecían unos sobre otros. La situación se estaba convirtiendo en insostenible, llegó un momento en que las condiciones de iluminación fueron empeorando y las vías urbanas acabaron siendo surcos profundos y tenebrosos adonde no llegaba el sol.

The metropolitan hybrid The history of hybrids begins at the end of the 19th century, when the dense city started to accept the overlapping of functions as inevitable. It is inside the metropolises where these mixed organisms arise, helped mainly by centrality’s power as a catalyst. It originates with the disproportionate increase of the price of land and the rigidity of the urban weft, both of these being the limitations that the plot imposes. Previous examples can be found, examples based on classical architecture or traditional situations linked to infrastructures, but it is in the pragmatic North American metropolis where the hybrid building housed any function that could be profitable, devouring traditional types. The hybrid building thus enjoys dense and fruitful atmospheres, which favour the natural appearance of unexpected activities.

In 1916, the New York Zoning Resolution was approved. It regulated uses, height and volume of the new buildings. In it, the appropriate inclination of the sun’s rays to the centre of the street was established. This line coincided with the oblique of the minimum setback required of New York skyscrapers. from the street at a distance relative to its height, which created new challenges for architects of the period, those educated in the ideas of the École des Beaux Arts. This style crisis was remarkable, as the aesthetic values of current tendencies were changed by the pragmatic requirements of building structure and economy. The architect was required to create a literal interpretation of the new Resolutions to apply them to the building and forget traditions of the past. Well-lit space became more valuable than an intricately designed French renaissance cornice.

The construction of the 40-storey Equitable Building in New York in 1915 caused a public scandal as it blocked sunlight reaching Cedar Street, a street that from that moment would be forever dark. Some years earlier, it was typical to build as high as possible, without considering the surrounding buildings. It was the survival of the fittest and building grew over each other. The situation was becoming unsustainable and the moment came when lighting conditions worsened and urban streets became deep, dark trenches that never saw the sun.

El antiguo puerto de Copenhague está experimentando una profunda transformación para convertirse en un eje de equipamientos con fuerte vocación simbólica (el Teatro Real, la Ópera o los futuros Archivos Nacionales). Sobre el último solar vacío frente al agua, el edificio refuerza las conexiones peatonales entre el centro histórico y el borde del canal, salvando la vía rápida existente con un pasaje subterráneo que concentra todos los accesos. El proyecto plantea el amontonamiento desordenado de usos, rompiendo con la habitual repartición jerárquica de programas, e impulsando así una verdadera interacción. El volumen resultante, fruto del apilamiento de piezas de pequeño tamaño, contrasta con la escala rotunda de los grandes edificios monolíticos que tienden a cerrarse alrededor de sus propios vestíbulos de entrada.

The former Copenhagen harbour is going through a deep transformation to turn it into an axis of public facilities with a strong symbolic vocation (the Royal Theatre, the Opera or the future National Archive). On the last vacant lot on the water, the building reinforces pedestrian connections between the historic centre and the border of the canal, saving the existing motorway with a passage where accesses will be concentrated. The project raises the issue of disorderly combination of uses, breaking away from the typical hierarchical distribution of programmes, and thus driving true interaction. The resulting volume, from the stacking of smaller pieces, contrasts with the categorical scale of the large monolithic buildings that tend to close themselves to their own atria. a+t 32 2008
