Businesses with a positive impact on society

“… the ultimate aim is not so much a high dividend distribution, as the build-up of useful activities.”
A.P. Møller, 1953
The A.P. Moller Group is a diversified group of industry leading companies, independently run with dedicated boards and executive teams.
Though they operate in different sectors and industries, every A.P. Moller Group company delivers a service or product that has a positive impact on society – ‘nyttig virksomhed’. This shared underlying purpose ties the Group together – along with our values, heritage, and a close association to the Maersk name.
'Nyttig virksomhed’ builds on A.P. Møller’s life goal of ‘being useful in the context of society’, which can take many forms. For example, A.P. Moller – Maersk enables global trade, KK Wind Solutions is key to the green transition, and Faerch innovates sustainable food packaging. ‘Nyttig virksomhed’ is also a key criteria when expanding the Group and sowing the seeds for a successful future.
A.P. Moller Holding is the Group’s parent company. Ultimately, the Group is owned by the A.P. Moller Foundation.

The Group’s activities lie within four overall themes, all relevant for multiple business cycles.
Global trade is key to prosperity as it enables income and growth for people and societies. We enable global trade in different ways, for example by facilitating more efficient logistics for countries and companies across the globe and by building critical infrastructure.
Global consumption of resources is under pressure. More sustainable replacements are being adapted and the use and utilisation of resources must be optimised. We are committed to the development towards circular rather than linear production and consumption models.
Our societies depend on a steady and reliable energy supply. At the same time, our planet needs to urgently transition from hydrocarbon based energy to sustainable energy sources. We are focused on helping to make this transition possible in a way that is reliable, secure, and responsible.
Across both mature and emerging economies, population demographics are changing. These slow-moving but largely inevitable demographic and societal factors are transforming our societies. We investigate digital and automated ways of working to address the welfare challenges arising from demographic change.

The A.P. Moller Group is ultimately owned by the A.P. Moller Foundation, a Danish philanthropic commercial foundation. It was established in 1953 by A.P. Møller with the support of his children in order to safeguard the long-term viability of the A.P. Moller Group and the adherence to the core values and principles. The Foundation is named after A.P. Møller and his wife Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller.
Every year, the Foundation donates funds to a number of social, cultural, and educational projects in Denmark, Southern Schleswig, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the other Nordic countries.
The Opera Park is under construction next to the Royal Danish Opera House in Copenhagen. It will revitalise the area with a beautiful green oasis on the surface and improve the means of access and parking underground. The Opera Park is designed by the Danish architecture studio Cobe and expected to be inaugurated in 2023.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the A.P. Moller Group established the Maersk Bridge: an air bridge and supply chain operation to secure delivery of PPE to healthcare workers and thereby reduce the risk of transmitting Covid-19 in hospitals. The A.P. Moller Foundation donated the first shipment in 2020.
In 2020, the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping was launched by the A.P. Moller Foundation and a group of leading industry players with the purpose of developing new net-zero fuel types and technologies.
The Maersk Tower is a state-of-the-art research building in Copenhagen. It accommodates the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen with 15 floors of modern lecture halls and cutting edge laboratories. The building is designed by the renowned Danish architecture studio C.F. Møller and has obtained several architectural awards.
Hammershus is Northern Europe’s largest castle ruin, erected in the 13th century on the northern tip of Bornholm. In 2012, a careful restoration of the 2 km wall and 20,000 m2 stone masonry was initiated, and in 2018 a new visitor centre was added to accommodate the more than 500,000 annual visitors.
In 2013, the A.P. Moller Foundation decided to donate DKK 1bn to strengthen the education in Danish public schools. The objective is to increase the pupils’ learning and welfare by enhancing qualifications of teachers and developing new teaching tools. More than 100 projects have been funded so far.
The seven-pointed star has embodied our Group's activities since 1886.
Ane Møller occasionally accompanied her husband, Captain Peter Mærsk Møller, on his ships during the latter part of the 19th century, and at one point fell seriously ill on a voyage with him. In a letter, Peter Mærsk Møller describes how this incident was the origin of the star:
“The little star on the funnel is a reminder of the evening I prayed for you so dejectedly and anxiously, asking for the sign that I might see a star in the grey, overcast sky, a reminder that the Lord hears our prayers.”
Ane Møller soon recovered and the star was chosen to guide the family’s shipping venture. When Peter Mærsk Møller acquired the steamship ‘Laura’ in 1886, he had its black funnel ringed with a blue band with a white seven-pointed star on each side.
