FRIENDS:
On March 1 1961, American president John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to, through service and cultural exchange, promote peace in the world. The Macedonian government invited Peace Corps to establish a program in 1996. From May 23 through 29 this year the Apollonia Foundation hosted, in Gevgelija, a weeklong celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Peace Corps service in the World and 15 years in Macedonia. On Monday evening, the celebration started with the opening of a photography exhibition at the Gevgelija Public Library Goce Delchev. This was followed by an “English Hour” on volunteering and America, presented by Kathy and David VanDerWege, currently serving volunteers in Gevgelija. The exhibition was open for viewing during regular library hours throughout the week. The anniversary celebration continued on Sunday when currently serving volunteers from across Macedonia arrived in Gevgelija along with the Peace Corps Macedonia Country Director Stephen Kutzy, and Peace Corps Regional Director for Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, Helen Lowman. Volunteers and guest viewed the exhibition and then the exhibition was closed with formal congratulatory wishes from the President of Gevgelija’s City Council, followed by thank you remarks from both Stephen Kutzy and Helen Lowman. The celebration then moved, by walking tour, to the Gevgelija cemetery for an American memorial day recognition, where Ace Ristovski, Direchttp://macedonia.peacecorps.gov/ tor of the Apollonia Foundation, and David VanDerWege, currently serving Peace Corps Volunteer in Gevgelija, told their interesting story of the grave of Dr. James F. Donnelly.
